Title: Firefox - 45.9.0 for OS/2 GA1.1...anyone...anyone???
Post by: Dariusz Piatkowski on April 20, 2018, 04:19:23 pm
OK, what is happenning here??? LOL  :o

FF 45.9.0 (rel-3 I believe), which brought us up to GA 1.1 was published 2 days ago, yet the forum is DEAD QUIET...you people are starting to freak me out...!!!

C'mon, get out there, install, is the result better then previous releases? https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases)

Truth be told, other than the email notification I get on the testers' list, I did not see any other announcements...so I figured I'd post here. I did the d/l through the above link, as a ZIP file, un-packed to a non-RPM location, I do not see the official RPM package out yet, but then again, I am only looking at the public netlabs-rel repo.

Anyways, it's out there...check it out, I figured I'd give it a few days' worth of runtime before sharing my assessment with the wider audience of the forum.

I've tried it yesterday on one system only and it traps at loading xul.dll. Even PMDll traps on examining xul.dll.

Because all .rpm packages are present and no double files exist, I'm not motivated to try more. I decided to give it another chance when the firefox.rpm will be available, but I'm sure that it won't work as well. Note that I haven't tried the GA 1 version before, because people wrote that it has severe problems.

I'm using SeaMonkey, so I install Firefox only for testing. I'll try it on other systems, but first they have other problems.

I"m using the 10/04/17 Version and it's sometimes better than the prior version, but still not perfect and I have a bank site that won't run on it.  The 7 zip format is a pain as simple minded me can't figure out how to unzip 7Z files.  What a pain.  And Arca doesn't have it as an RPM yet over a year after initial release.  Oh well, we soldier on to keep functioning.

I've been waiting for the RPM, which I thought would be available on arcanoae-exp by now. It's where the previous RPM's have been published.
For those who missed it, the announcement is here, https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases/tag/FIREFOX_45_9_0esr_RELEASE_OS2_GA1_1 (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases/tag/FIREFOX_45_9_0esr_RELEASE_OS2_GA1_1).

What zip/unzip util are you using?

My ZipCntrl app can't handle 7z either, but luckily ArchiveViewer can and you can get it here => http://www.altsan.org/programming/os2/arcview_22.wpi (http://www.altsan.org/programming/os2/arcview_22.wpi)

No problem: 7z.exe x -o<dest_dir> <7z_file>

You may also want to add the option -y to assume Yes on all queries.

With ArcaOS, you also have the option to use the OEM version of Zippy. (Don't remember its name on ArcaOS.) Using .7z here is reasonable due to the download size and time.

I have received this "Rpmdb checksum is invalid:... " message a number of times when trying to install other packages - for example when installing the required packages for VLC 3.0.1

Actually, as it happens I'm seeing this at command line as well, and it is known NOT to be a problem, meaning, the RPM packge should have installed successfully.

On the other hand, if you install through the ANPM app it will handle this error/warning message and you will not see it.

Rpmdb checksum is invalid: dCDPT(pkg checksums)
That message can be ignored. See here: http://trac.netlabs.org/rpm/ticket/117 (http://trac.netlabs.org/rpm/ticket/117)

BTW: It is filtered out in ANPM.

0042_01.TRP

Dies on XUL

All "required" elements are loaded.

This note is being written with 45.9.0.2

Seems the developers must be old IBM guys. They would write great programs with terrible installers.

Firefox 45.9.0-3 works for me
It works slightly better than 45.9.0-2

Simply unzip with Arcview.exe v2.2 by Alex Taylor (7z.exe, 7z.dll, 7za.exe) and overwrite existing installation 45.9.0-2 (...\usr\bin, ...\usr\lib)

Hmm, you're right, just seems to hang. Even the ads, while showing the first frame, didn't play and I believe they're often MP4. Youtube did suggest restarting my device, and with SM, TB and FF all running at the same time, I could be having resource problems and will try rebooting
I did successfully play a video from Canada's National Film Board.

Another problem here seems to be that Firefox isn't completely closing, icon stays hatched and it still shows in the CAD window list.

This is the 7z that I'm using, unzipped over previous install.

Edit: rebooting and just running Firefox has the same results.

Help-About just says this is 45.9.0, just as the previous version did.

Some youtube videos will play, if you add the FFMPEG package, using ANPM (RPM/YUM). Just be sure that you have the SDL (upper case) package installed first. If the sdl (lower case) package is installed, it will block the install. Uninstall sdl (lower case), watch what it uninstalls with it, and install SDL (upper case) along with those packages, then install FFMPEG.

I have the FFmpeg libs installed and SeaMonkey plays youtube videos fine. Could be just a busy network, this LTE connection can get overloaded.
VP9 videos should play even without the FFmpeg libs and as mentioned a NFB video plays fine.

Firefox 45.9.0-3 works fine here, I downloaded the RPM file, unRPM'ed it, copied the @unixroot\usr\lib stuff to my d:\apps\firefox directory after renaming the old one to firefox_old, started fine. I haven't bothered to update anything per the required RPM list as I suspect I'm up to date anyway.

The previous version ran utube videos fine here. I haven't noticed any performance difference or any issues but then its only day 2.
I don't use yum/rpm stuff beyond unrpm'ing any rpm files required.

I have  checked a few youtube videos and every one I have looked at, University of Western Australia material, Hawkwind, Anatomy, etc, have all played well including audio. No stuttering.
FYI: I use an Intel Core2Duo 3GHz (CPU=1 in config.sys) with 4G Ram and a 500G Seagate SATA HD with 64M JFS cache. The only plugins I use are Download Helper and NoScript.

[Edited: grammar and youtube addition]

I can confirm the new test reliease of Seamonky does indeed play the Youtube videos with out hassle. While the GA release of Firefox will not. I tried 3 different ones. And I also can confirm that the New relaese of Firefox does not want to shut down.

In my case this version of firefox 45-9-3, works the same as others, but youtube videos they are not visible. A wheel comes out spinning, and the video is never loaded. When closing it does not close either, I have to kill him.
The videos on YouTube, had two problems,
1 - sometimes stopped the video and to continue I had to press Wi-Fi on-off and I continued
2- The second problem was that the sound was repeated, and you had to close firefox, and tell cancel
so that it continues.

The first error was repaired recently but the second error was not.
The second error now, is very similar to the first, sometimes I have to press Wi-Fi on-off to continue.
Sometimes when you stop by clicking with the mouse on the time bar projected, continues to be seen.

The versions that work best for me are the FF45.5, and almost all the seamonkey.

But I also have applications that need wifi on-off to continue, and that do not have nothing to do with the browser.
1- In a two-window session, if I execute qbasic, pulse esc, alt + f, and move through the menus
it locks, if I leave it the laptop heats up and goes out. If pulse wifi on-off continues without problems
until it locks up again, the application.
2- If I run find ... of the xcenter, looking for a file in a large unit, the same.
3- If I run find ... of the xcenter, and tell it to save the result in a folder, the blocking
it's the same but much worse, not just wifi on-off to continue, I have to remove and plug the mouse usb to continue and turn off the computer.

In a full-screen DOS session the qbasic does not give me that error.

When installing the RPM_REQUIREMENTS I encountered

No package libcx-0.6.2-1.oc00.pentium4 available.
No package libicu-56.1-2.oc00.pentium4 available.

and when trying to install os2-mpts-0.0.0-2.oc00.i386 I got the following strange message

Didn't look good but I tried running FireFox anyway.

Firefox starts and runs with the following issues.

1) Firefox will start but the window will not show unless I delete the existing "Mozilla" profile in the MOZILLA_HOME directory.  I noticed this issue with the previous verion also.

2) If FireFox crashes apparently something gets screwed up with the profile and again FireFox will start but its main window will never display. I have to kill  FireFox, delete the profile and restart. Then everything works ok.

3) There is a bug which still exists, and has existed in the last two versions I have run: when I right click on a link on a page, then select "Open Link in a New Tab", the a new tab opens with the contents of the link, but the link is also opened in the existing page. If I wait 5 seconds or so after right clicking on the link before clicking on "Open Link in a New Tab" in the popup menu, then the link just opens in the new tab.

4) After installing FFMPEG as suggested in the readme, I can view videos on Vimeo, but not on YouTube

My impression is  this version runs quicker and better (more stable, less bugs) than version 38.

The installation is actually pretty straight forward, all things considered. I wish the developers zipped the main package with regular zip (info-zip)  rather than 7z, just because regular zip seems more supported and better understood in OS2 than 7z. But ArcaOS does come with the Archive Tool (in the Utilities folder) which will unzip 7z archives. Putting the RPM requirements in the file RPM_REQUIREMENTS is nice - makes them easy to find and easy to cut/paste into a command prompt window when running YUM.

Conclusion: I am impressed. This version runs very well on my machine, with the exception of YouTube videos and some minor annoyances. Thank you to the developers - great job!

More data.

I have experienced the Firefox appearing to be closed but actually still running. it manifests as the FireFox icon being hatched while no window is visible.

In that situation Firefox appeared in WatchCat as running, with WatchCat indicating "Confirm Close".

I am guessing that 1) as it is closing Firefox is displaying the Confirm close dialog (multiple tabs are open - do you want to close?) but the dialog is not visible, or 2) the dialog is displayed, the user selects YES, which causes Firefox to close its main window but for some reason the dialog process is not terminated.

SDL is only a requirement of FFplay, the libs, in this case avcodec, and even FFmpeg will run fine without SDL.
Currently FFplay requires SDL2

I've seen many similar errors along with packages seeming to be installed twice.
The thing with RPM is that it is used by the big companies that make money on consulting, so it almost seems that it is broken by design to create more consulting work.

You really need the updated libcx package and should open an issue at Netlabs or Github (the libcx repository is there) about the lack of a P4 package.
I'll attach the i686 version. Just unlock the one in @UNIXROOT\usr\lib by doing unlock libcx0.dll, replace with this one and reboot.

Thanks David for the DLL. I will do install as you recommend.

I should clarify my statement about the Mozilla profile.

The very first time I started Firefox it started but did not display the main window. After I deleted the profile (actually I set MOZILLA_HOME to a new directory unique to 45.9.0) Firefox started fine, and continues to start fine. Except for one time when it crashed and appeared to corrupt something in the profile, which was fixed by deleting the profile directory.

Hmm, rare to srew up your profile enough to not be able to display the browser but it happens.
You can start Firefox etc with firefox.exe -profilemanager to bring up the profile manager and create, delete etc profiles. Run firefox.exe -help to see all the options.
I strongly recommend backing up your profiles regularly. even just to another location on your drive. Especially if using Thunderbird or SeaMonkey for mail. I backup a couple of times a day sometimes, partially a habit from dial up where it takes forever to repopulate all the tabs. And every day or two backup to flash drives. Sometimes it is easier to restore the profile.
My backup command (Profiles are stored on Z:, their own partition)
Code: [Select]
rsync -hia2X --itemize-changes --del Z:\Mozprofiles k:\Mozprofiles 2>&1 | tee backup.log
includes a log of the backup.

Here is what I shared on the FF testing email list regarding my experience with GA1.1, note that this was in the context of people reporting HIGH CPU cycles even when FF was being minimized:

Quote
...For what it's worth, this behaviour seems to have gotten worse with the  latest GA1.1 release.

Not sure if there is any co-relation between the two, but my overall CPU  usage is now noticably higher. Basically, on a 5 core machine I am seeing a  consistent 15-20% average (over the past 1 min - as reported by the 'CPU  Monitor' utility) usage. When I view this in the 'MPCPU Mon' OS/2 utility,  with the refresh of 150 ms I see an on-going CPU spike taking place across all cores.

Having said that, the GA1.1 drop overall, while feeling a tad slower, does  seem to be more stable. I noticed memory consumption seems to have slowed down, and while the overall steady CPU utilization is higher it no longer  seems to increase as total runtime of the process increases.

In the past the CPU utilization used to slowly climb over the hours FF was  up and running, until after about 10-15 hrs (depending of course on the  amount of usage) the CPU spikes became so consistently large that I needed  to kill the process and re-start. Now, as far as the past 3 days of usage  indicate, that is no longer so pronounced...

Besides this, what has definitely gotten WORSE here is the YouTube playback. Prior to this upgrade I was able to finally get a smooth video & sound playback. The sound issue (used to loop after some time of playback) was solved by an upgrade to the latest UniAudio drivers. The video is only playable when using the h264ify add-on, otherwise the VP9 video codec completely fails, the video playback window simply stops updating, no sound, no further video.

Try this build, https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/firefox-45.9.0.en-US.os2.zip (https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/firefox-45.9.0.en-US.os2.zip).
Still has the minimized cpu usage but does play youtube videos and closes on exit.
Same code excepting some optimizations and compiler.

Dave!!!

Amazing...seriously, first time - in I can't remember how long - that FF actually plays native VP9 YouTube videos...so that's pretty awesome. When the h264ify add-on is turned ON the stuttering video continues, just as it did with the GA1.1, so there must be something else to it beyond the compiler stuff.

OK, so here are two requests, not sure if you can/are-willing to do this but, can you:

1) release that last test build with  '-Os -march=pentium4' instead of '-Os -march=i686'? This would give me the closest to apples-to-apples comparison, so maybe the move to GCC 5.1.0 is all the difference that we need?

2) release that last test build with  '-march=amdfam10 -Ofast -msse2' instead of '-Os -march=i686'? This would give me the AMD Phenom II CPU optimizations I wanted to try out (yeah, I know it violates some of the strict standards compliance, and maybe is incompatible with the other options I see in 'about:buildconfig', but if possile, please give it a try)

Thanks for putting out this alt builds!!!

The optimization I did is a bit more complex, with most of it being -Os and the JavaScript engine being -O3.
I can build with various options though I'm not sure if targeting a newer CPU then mine will work. The problem is where to upload them. I don't really like abusing my free account at bitbucket.

Dave - wow.

Youtube plays, Vimeo plays. Works great. Thank you very much.

The only thing I notice is the sound is very soft - even when turned all the way up.  Is there some settings for adjusting the sound louder?

Again - thanks for the upload and your work.

The BWW version and Dave's one work the same here. Both play youtube, both do not play videos on ad.nl. One thing I did notice is that Dave's compile sometimes 'hesitates' when scrolling, it scrolls slowly at first, then speeds up.

Dave's build plays YouTube video here after I updated dependencies. It wouldn't run at all without "yum update all", and this is starting from all dependencies in place for bww latest Firefox.

bww Firefox never starts playing.

Go to Hobbes and search for PMUNIMIX. Once installed, play with all the volume controls. Here I needed to turn up the front speakers.

Seems to play the videos on ad.nl fine here. Perhaps test with a new profile and make sure that everything is up to date.

Guys, so far it looks like it's a network & timing issue. So depending on the combination of your hardware and used optimization options all builds (Dave's or mine) might or might not work. I've created a ticket for that https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/issues/266. Feel free to share your experience there. By experience I mean technical facts — which hardware you have, which builds fail for you and which don't and what you do to make them work; abstract phrases like "doesn't work" are of no use so please don't spam with them there.

Almost, but not exactly. I was testing the latest builds with quite different hardware from low end Dothan op to 3.x GHz multiprocessor systems. The best work-around for video playback is to disable the pointing device completely. Movement of the pointer causes lost frames in all situations of video playback. It's not a big issue for moving pictures but more critical for audio quality. Newer Mozilla builds under Windows 32-bit have the opposite behaviour btw.

I checked the later builds against the latest Seamonkey 2.7.2 build from Dave which is the last one for OS/2 that provides listenable video and audio playback. The audio device driver doesn't matter, so I used Crystal, AD and Ensoniq - but never used this unisound-alsa.

Perhaps comment on the Github issue as dmik doesn't monitor here much.
Here most of my SM builds play video and sound fine, the latest Firefox also works with the right optimizations most of the time, it seems to be a timing issue.
Currently dmik is investigating the high CPU usage when Firefox is minimized.

Well, in my case I'm watching videos with this program that I attached to qbasic, and with the seamonkey 2.35 almost perfect.
I execute it in a os / 2 window, with qbasic / run c: \ pk02.bas, before opening the seamonkey, I leave the window without moving it, nor minimizing it, I open the seamonkey and it is already.

Ha, ha, ha I do not know exactly. But it works for me. I guess someone who knows what those memory positions are will understand. I just had a problem with the mahjonng, and looking with theseus I saw that those memory positions, were constantly changing. The question is why. And if I fix them, the mahjong worked, and the videos with some tweaks improved.

If I can tell you that there is a consequence, that it occurs in the manjong and in the videos, if I run the pokes, the first pmshell gets most of the work done, and everything is pretty good. But if I do not execute it, the highest workload is seen in the second pmshell.
I understand that the first pmshell is the one with the lowest pid number.

I'd reported that the new Firefox 45.9.0 traps at xul.dll. Today I tried a recent test version after removing old profiles and that has worked. Also PMDll doesn't trap on loading xul.dll anymore. Maybe that's caused by the test version, I haven't tried anything else. The test version is ff45_9_0_t5.7z (http://rpm.netlabs.org/test/ff45_9_0_t5.7z).

Unfortunately that one is not usable on my older single-core hardware. Trying to move the browser window with the mouse, blocks the system until the focus is changed once by the CAD handler. The window is repainted, but the move isn't processed. CPU usage is 100 % all the time. That's not really new compared to the postings on bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2 (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/issues?q=sort%3Aupdated-desc).

Hi there,
I have been busy trying the different Firefox versions the last weeks and here is one observation I made.
For the records: I run ArcaOs 5.01 on a Thinkpad X61. The firefox supplied with the system (38.8.0) runs fine and plays youtube videos well when I am connected to my wlan at home.
The 45.9 Version I have been testing concerning the youtube issues is firefox-45.9.0-3.t2.pentium4. I changed one setting in the about:config after searching the web:

Quote
Firefox stores the current session status (opened urls, cookies, history and form data) to the disk on a regular basis. It is used to recover a previous session in case of crash. The default setting is to save the session every 15 seconds, resulting in frequent disk access.

To increase the save interval to 10 minutes for example, change in about:config the setting of browser.sessionstore.interval to 600000

Either I am lucky or this changed the behaviour when starting youtube. The youtube page loads much faster than it did before and now I am able to play the most videos without severe problems.
Perhaps someone would like to try this? As mentioned, perhaps I am only lucky?

Holger

Presumably the 100% CPU load of single core CPUs or the ~95% CPU load of a ThinkPad T42's fast Pentium 4 CPU isn't solved by the latest release for "OS/2"?

Testing here, on my T42 with a 1.6Ghz Pentium M, displaying the start page and waiting a few minutes for it to calm down, it is using about 2% (0.8-4.4) CPU with the very odd peak to about 33%.

Interesting. Is there already a SM release based on the same code? Sounds like its worth another full test now, based on the T42 "benchmark" with a former CPU load of nearly 100% (same here).

Almost, Firefox currently is optimized with the JavaScript code for speed, -O3 and the rest for size, -Os.
I built https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/seamonkey-2.42.9esr_r3.en-US.os2.zip (https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/seamonkey-2.42.9esr_r3.en-US.os2.zip) with straight -O3 and targeting the i686. There's also https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/thunderbird-45.8.0_r3.en-US.os2.zip (https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/thunderbird-45.8.0_r3.en-US.os2.zip) with the same optimizations.
I'll probably do a build targeting the Pentium M with the JS code -O3 and the rest -Os. Our compiler is broken for building it all targeting -O3 and any CPU using SSE or SSE2, doesn't align the instructions and static variables correctly.

Why, oh why, oh why do you keep using -O3?  If it's incompetent when it comes to SSE, why do you think it's capable of any extreme optimization? While the bugs it introduces for SSE may be painfully obvious, the bugs it causes elsewhere are likely subtle and hard to track down - but equally as obvious when you try to use the thing.

Don't get it to work. There is trouble with LIBC.

Exception C0000005 - Access Violation

Process:  FIREFOX.EXE (05/21/2018 17:17:07 51,129)
PID:      48 (72)
TID:      01 (1)
Priority: 200

Filename: LIBC066.DLL (10/26/2014 20:16:29 1,361,666)
Address:  005B:1DCBE6C0 (0001:0005E6C0)
Cause:    Attempted to read from 00000001
          (not a valid address)

After that a listing of about 200Kb.
As far as I know its the last version of LIBC (libc-0.6.6-csd6.zip) and the last version of FF (firefox-45.9.0-4.oc00.pentium4.7z) (why not just zip?)
Is there a way to run the program?

License issues probably, some of the GCC libs might be published under the GPL and it cannot distributed in the same package as software with other licenses

The dll hell starts if you mix your different zipped dlls together and that's the reason why the full rpm way is the only one to go currently. And don't say YOU are keen enough to clean up all dlls which would come with all the different packages manually. 99.99% of the OS/2 users proofed they can not.

LIBCX0    0001:00009970

LIBC066   0001:000111E4  between __init + C4 and __ctype - 40C

LIBC066   0001:0002887B  between __init_app + B and _sys_init_ret - 1
DOSCALL1  0004:0000C188

I have still a P4 system and as mentioned before, there is no libcx0.dll compiled for P4. May be that's the problem.

The exception handler crashed, probably due to Firefox crashing in such a way that the stack or such was corrupted, and since exceptq is supported through libcx... Really you should also have the debug info for libcx to be sure.
BTW, the P4 runs i686 code fine, though perhaps a bit slower and for some programs, P4 will use things like SSE which also helps performance.

@Olafur, there is no problem with licensing, the GCC libs are GPL with a linking exception and everything else is more permissive. Those libraries that need an offer of source, well there are source RPMs that are hosted besides the regular RPMs.

@Ivan, the problem is that the direction that Bitwise took with development has resulted in a whole mess of DLLs. I'll attach the DLL tree for the latest Firefox. Some of these DLLs have to be the latest versions as some fixes for Firefox have been applied to them and there are enough inter-dependencies that it quickly can turn into a nightmare manually updating and keeping track of versions. This isn't helped by our old systems DLL support. 8.3 names that have to correspond to the internal name though there is a push to put bldlevel info in all the binaries, they don't all have it yet and some may never get it.
I don't really like how development has gone but it is what we have and without Bitwise, our system would be a lot more out of date and less useful.

FYI

Firefox 45.9 is longer to start than FF 38.8 but I tried do speed it up using RAM drive - xul.dll is very big ! (29 398 067 bytes)
I do a xcopy of my @uniroot\usr\lib\firefox-45.9.0 to @ramroot\lib\firefox-45.9.0 after having added a new program icon named firefox with program path: M:\lib\firefox-45.9.0 \firefox.exe under  @uniroot\usr\lib\firefox-45.9.0

this is done by the startup.cmd
...
md M:\lib\firefox-45.9.0
xcopy of my C:\usr\lib\firefox-45.9.0 M:\lib\firefox-45.9.0  /S /E
exit

Than, I run firefox from my RAM drive (created under ArcaOS and using my extra 12MB storage)
I found it to be faster to start now. Other dll's have been left on @unixroot

You should be able to copy it to any directory and as long as you run the firefox.exe you copied, it should work. Looks in ..\lib\firefox-45.9.0 and . for its DLLs.
SeaMonkey xul.dll is 44 MBs, and 464 MBs before lxlite removes the debug stuff and compresses it.

Tested running SeaMonkey from the ram drive, not much faster here as the bottleneck is all the windows and tabs I have open, it peaks one core for a couple of minutes.
What did help was defragging my profile by moving it to a different partition and back. It also helps that it has its own partition. In a default install with MOZILLA_HOME=HOME and installed on the boot drive, room can get tight and things like places.sqlite can get pretty fragmented. Same with large mailboxes.

The last updates to the DLLS for Mozilla was libc, libcx and NSPR so these have to be latest , perhaps second to latest for libcx. Just check POPUPLOG.OS2 for sys2070, probably the wrong libcx will give something like

11-26-2017  20:55:45  SYS2070  PID 0043  TID 0001  Slot 0093
K:\USR\LIB\THUNDERBIRD-45.8.0\THUNDERBIRD.EXE

While my setup may not be perfect (e.g. Lucide has to be started an even number of times, JPEG.DLL in a JAVA142 subdirectory, no latest FF for ArcaOS, no RPM), nowadays getting it right isn't that hard, as long as the system is managed properly. An OS/2 system, i.e. not a Unixified ArcaOS system: if I want Unix, I'll start using Unix.

For example, I've got just 2 copies of Z.DLL by now. The exception is Links, which uses its own copy, and IIRC its WarpIN installer doesn't use the BEGINLIBPATH and LIBPATHSTRICT settings to account for that. So patch the install script, or Rexxify the install script to replace the WarpIN install script. Of course each distributed package with an own Z.DLL has to be checked, but apparently the typical result is that its Z.DLL can be deleted.

I do wish I had recorded which packages are using DLLs like LIBVPX*.DLL, because I'm not sure if I can delete LIBVPX3.DLL and/or LIBVPX4.DLL by now. And I tend to not install hardly ever used software with an excessive number of requirements. GIMP may be an example, despite of packages to install requirements, with Win/OS-2 and Photoshop 2.51 as an abandonware-alternative.

Tha basic gist is that BWW said that the stand alone files in ZIP and install requirements was costing about 8 hours of support per week in tickets. If you take in consideations that software and downloads are provided free of charge. ..
With lack of human man power they had to make chooses.

Plenty of people are using ArcaOS without much issue's. The bottom line is the ported applications need these DLL's. I do not know how you can keep the ported DLL's off OS/2 if you want to run modern ported applications.

"Plenty" nor democracy is a standard and they weren't producing a "FF for ArcaOS", isn't it?

An option may be to stop (specific) support if RPM or whatever installer wasn't used. Surely RPM.DLL, optional and not required, will appear in a *.TRP file

All I'd expect is a "FF for OS/2", for all relevant P6+ OS/2 hardware, without requirements of useless requirements of requirements of requirements. Part of the problem is that both the English and German speaking community have a recent OS, eCS 2.x DE/EN or newer, and they are the developers with their own standards.

Another example is ooRexx for their OSes. Or our new included software, often not related to an OS at all, which isn't distributed as a "FixPak" for older versions. Like Unicode fonts, if AN is supposed to add those fonts to ArcaOS. There is no good release management (own copy of Z.DLL in any LIBPATH directory, OS upgrade can en will create a mess), and I'm still the human package manager w.r.t. single CPU core hardware. I have no OS for two or more cores, so in the future it's possible that it's easier for your "plenty of people" to win the general OS elections. ;)

Well if you would read the readme file of Firefox for OS/2 it says the RPM package is downloadable via your ArcaOS subscription.

Anyway if you know how to do it  better outline your plan or call BWW to provide vast quanties of sponsorship.

Saldy most OS/2 and eCS versions published are indeed what you can use them for, for retro computing. Such as on a T42 laptop. It works for you that is great. Otherwhise good luck booting eCS 2.1 on new Thinkpad T540d.

Sorry about that blund response. But it clearly seems you have not educated yourself properly as to why BWW introduced YUM/RPM. When you write that you expect for "Firefox for OS/2"  then why not make a big payment to BWW to make it happen ? BWW has make clear they need funding, they are underfunded and understaffed.  BWW makes MAYOR contributions to supporting the RPM and GCC enviroment on OS/2 and they all publish the results free of charge. Hence the reason they ask for sponsorunits.

With BWW its efforts we would have not a somewhat more modern browser.

Roderick,

You are absolutely right on the money here. It can get pretty frustrating dealing with wanting the NEW releases and yet trying to make them all work on the original/GA OS/2 architecture. I have been there, 'done that, talked the talk and walked the walk', so I can certainly appreciate the sentiment on both sides.

Truth of the matter is that our platform is barely alive. This drives the decision making process a certain way and well, due to lack of other competitive driving forces (small platform, huge costs, etc) we all have no choice but to accept things.

Put it this way, even when you go down the RPM/YUM road it is not exactly like you have a sunny day every day. Packages are routinely not updated in a timely manner, tickets take a very long time to get worked on, or sometimes never at all. All of this frustrates the everyday use, and I am one of them. But, again, it is the way-of-life on the OS/2 platform and there realistically isn't much we can do about it.

Yes, I agree, it all sounds "defeatist" but one must be a realist as well. There have been numerous times where I felt like simply tossing my hands up in the air, shutting things OFF and walking away. My brother did exactly that some years ago, he now lives in the Linux world, happy enough, occsionally poking at me as I share my trials and tribulations with him. The love of OS/2 keeps me here and so I work with the limitations we have.

If there is one thing that I wish would get addressed it is the seemingly steep slope to building a DEV environment. I tried this, got stuck numerous times and still am stuck. Maybe if we could put $$$ into that task first and foremost we might be able to develop more grass-roots type activity, which I think would allow us to deal better with the other limitations.

Hi

Sadly the frustration exists. There is no longer an OS war going on, Operating Systems are no longer a market when everybody is keen to give money. For example I dislike the  FHS (the file structure) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard) but I understand that to for Bitwise to port things with the limited resources there are (skills and money) it is the optimal thing to work with. Otherwise it will take more efforts (time and money) to port Linux software to OS/2.

And sometimes (just sometimes  :D ), I think that money is not always the problem, even if we throw a truckload of money to a company to develop for OS/2, where are they going to find the skilled people? or how long we will have to wait and how much money will need to be spent for the learning curve to be adopted for new OS/2 developers?

Everybody is welcome to put their effort to try to create, port or transforms things the way one like it, but we need to understand we can not force other people to do some things outside their likes and priorities (specially without the truckload of money). We can suggest, open tickets, try to find some other people with a common goal, try to raise money, discuss our point of view but we can not let the frustration turn into personal attacks or people labeling.

Regards

If you mean Paul Smedley offers this enviroment for free ? That is true. the GCC/LIBC enviroment on OS/2 is maintained by a  volenteers and and BWW. Paul works on the GCC compiler free of charge (small sponsor amount).

Currently BWW maintains 266 DLL (the statics Silvan/Dmitry mentioned in the presentations they gave at Warpstock Europe. See http://articles.os2voice.org/  What paragraph:
BWW does in the background when working on major ports" for details.

The big issue that is projects like Firefox and QT are I guess just about to big for the small team that works on these tools to work on. David Yeo provides his compiles for Thunderbird and Seamonkey, but I think he recently stated he would not be able to compile new version of Seamonkey/Thunderbird without the work of BWW.

It isn't currently and I don't think the first RPM is generally available. Seems there was a Firefox testing list where it was released to.

For this point of your post I've a slightly different POV. Luckily all BWW projects talked about in this thread are open software and freely available. In contrary to OS/2 components and some AN projects. BWW stuff is usually easy to build and sufficiently documented. You can fix bugs if you're skilled enough relatively easy. A big difference IMHO.

Could you get a bit more precis about that? As we update ports relatively regularly. And tickets should not stay forever as long as we can reproduce them. I just looked (briefly) at tickets and didn't see any open ones from you. Nor any request.

With rpm in place a DEV env is relatively easy. We could tell/write all steps. Even on netlabs are already some written (small) articles about that. And of course if one puts $$$ in it we will help even faster. Using a rpm DEV env doesn't mean you need to build rpm enabled ports. It just helps you to install the DEV env.

I asked Yuri last year at Warpstock, but I didn't really get anything useful. We need someone to provide some guidance. At this point, though, it's better to come in as a Linux developer. Nothing I've got from setting up the legacy OS/2 development environments really helps to set up an rpm DEV environment.

Last year at Warpstock, Andy Willis showed how to make RPM, but we lack a public way to qualify NetLabs builds. How do we submit a build for the experimental repository, or eventually to release repository?

It would be excellent if someone who wants a Dev environment would document the steps to create one and present that in September. I can accept remote or prerecorded presentations.

Hi Silvan,

Oh now now, you and I have exchanged some pretty heated words in the past on this subject, so I won't go there again. My move from self-managed DLL to RPM/YUM was a nightmare, in some cases caused by unforeseen issues (such as previous Python install), so in an already existing OS/2 deployment, some of which are results of years of updates and ugprades at best, it's not 'pretty'.

I have no doubt that the team is trying, but at best, you guys are pretty tight on resources and the reality is that what we have today is simply not enough. All this creates stress and when the 'stars' aren't aligned just right to debug the problem quickly it makes the existing issues into even bigger problems.

You still want examples? OK...take the PSI IM client appliation, I'll use an example of what I would classify as in one case crappy and on the other hand a pretty good response:

1) PSI v0.16-dev-20150213 - crashes when entering IM message (http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/ticket/120 (http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/ticket/120))

Ticket opened Apr-8th, 1st response May-21st, potential fix identified May-24th...unfortunately given the time it took for anyone to work the ticket I had actually stopped usign the app since it was unusable.

2) PSI v.016-2018-07-16 produces a THEME error (http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/ticket/123 (http://trac.netlabs.org/qtapps/ticket/123))

Ticket opened Jul-19th, 1st response Jul-23rd, potential fix/workaround confirmed Jul-26th...wow, fantastic and seriously speedy resolution!

Here is an example of an unresolved ticket altogether:

1) Lucide 1.40 GA - crashes with large PDF files (http://trac.netlabs.org/lucide/ticket/355)

Ticket opened Apr-6th, 1st response Apr-9th, potential workaround only identified on Apr-17th and confirmed that the ticket will not be worked on due to lack of resources...and so it sits out there today despite the fact that it is probably the only native PDF viewer we have. So I go back to my GSView until I can one day (hopefully) run Lucide again.

You see, a statement like "...With rpm in place a DEV env is relatively easy..." is what may be part of the problem. The truth of the matter is that this is simply not true. I went down that path (please take a look at my threads in the Programming forum), could hardly get the native OS/2 stuff up and running, relied mostly on my previously installed VAC++ and EMX stuff instead. Only after many tedious hours and some forum feedback from the few who have actually ventured down this path, was I able to at least do basic GCC compiles. I am still stuck on a simple task of building a multi-threaded app (pthread) and certainly nowhere near being able to actually attempt a platform migration, let alone trying to help out in supporting various tickets.

So yes, you are absolutely right on the money regarding the documentation aspect. There simply seem to be too many pieces of this puzzle floating around, people like myself who tried to crack that nut, and anyone else who comes after them has seemingly no choice but to re-do all of that which hopefully results in a working install. On top of this, what may have worked some time ago no longer works today, the environment changes, part of that being due to the necessity driven course changes as we get nearer and neared to the Linux way of doing DEV. Sure, it makes sense, it's the only way for us to continue to have a viable way of sourcing new software, but my God, for someone knew to this 'game' it's like trying to shoot the arrow through that apple on someone's head while I'm on the back of the wagon that's rolling over some pretty bumpy roads...just ain't gonna happen!!!

I am going to venture a guess and say that this too often proves to be an insurmountable obstacle to growing the grass-roots DEV team.

I someone steps up and want to install a yum/rpm based dev env we can help. As all our dev use such an env. And if people believe it or not it's not hard to have a working setup. Some parts are documented and some need a brush up. So it's easiest if someone installs a brand new ArcaOS and we go from there. And of course this person should then document all our missing parts as well.

If you think that's long I tend to disagree. As I do those things in my sparetime as long as there is no pricatag added. If one steps up and says "Hey for this fix I would donate ... USD/€" all would be done faster. As then I could do it in my normal business hours.
And yes in the end all is money driven. If people like it or not, that how it works here. And no, we don't get rich at all. As sponsors/donators are rarely these days. And of course people which sponsored/donated already some USD/€ get faster responses. That's also normal I guess.
I could go a lot deeper in this regard, but I will not, as it doesn't belong in here. If some people want/need more information they have to sned me private e-mails.

Hi Silvan,

...If you think that's long I tend to disagree. As I do those things in my sparetime as long as there is no pricatag added...

Please look at the bigger picture and the overall context here. While you are focusing on all the reasons (AFAIK all of them being very fair and reasonable) why the proverbial SLA on the OS/2 platform is what it is, I am talking about the bigger picture where our platform experience pales in comparison to other community supported projects. Anyways, further argument here is pointless because I think we are both saying the same thing: we can not be any faster on OS/2 platform due to current challenges.

...If one steps up and says "Hey for this fix I would donate ... USD/€" all would be done faster... we don't get rich at all. As sponsors/donators are rarely these days. And of course people which sponsored/donated already some USD/€ get faster responses. That's also normal I guess.

I'm glad you brought the money aspect up, I firmly believe in the "put your money where your mouth is" approach to things, so to that end here is a brief summary of what I specifically contributed to most recently. I would be thrilled to see what others have done, for all I know I may indeed be very lacking in providing $$$ support...LOL?

1) multiple years of $49 USD for AN 'OS/2 & eCS Drivers & Software Subscription'
2) $15 USD for 'OS/2 ports and applications by Andrey Vasilkin'
3) $50 USD for '2 x VOICE sponsoring', I think this was PMMail?
4) $25 USD for 'FreeRDP port by Andrey Vasilkin', specific to his RDP Client project
5) $25 USD for 'OS/2 ports by Paul Smedley', hoping Paul would take a stab at porting Python 3.x

These are just the most recent couple of years. Of course there have been others such as the OpenOffice license, numerous applications (PMView, NetDrive, etc), and of course as much as possible I participate in and provide feedback on individual projects (be it something like the lSwitcher, or the bigger AN OS).

My point being: money is not the sole answer here, and thinking that this aspect alone will somehow improve the situation is wishfull thinking. Therefore, when you say something like "...And of course people which sponsored/donated already some USD/€ get faster responses..." I can't help but literally ask: what sort of sponsorship are we talking about here???

My personal feeling is that if I contribute more than the occasional $25/50 here and there I might as well be spending the money on a real platform (read => mainstream/commercial) with the bigger consumer audience and professional support teams (with real corporate SLAs).

But Silvan, you did not digest the full content of that ticket, the workaround simply does not work, it's a catch-22 where the workaround itself creates another problem which must itself be addressed through yet another workaround, is that metric seriously accepted as meeting the SLA???

First, once IBM gave us "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". So, don't trash your working version of a program for some new one. Whatever the reason might be.
Said that, this doesn't help you. Just did a test with a pdf twice the size with
Lucide 1.3.2 GA (2010-04-22) - no problems
JPDFViewer (see my site) - no problems

May be this helps.

I agree with Joop on the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

Your large PDF runs on Lucide 1.3.5 on my OS/2 install without any RPM/YUM junk.

I also still use Dave's firefox 17.0.11 ESR although there are some https sites that no longer work with the old security certificates so I am now trying to get the later version of firefox to run without breaking the programs that I normally use - not an easy task as some of the new required dlls do NOT play nice with older programs.

Jeep & ivan,

I agree, hindsight is always 20/20 right? Look, I upgraded to 1.4.0 for several reasons, the big one was that printing in the older versions would fail in about 50-75% of the cases...literally, a single page would print then I'd get a postscript error on the 2nd page. Besides that, as poppler library was changing I thought it made more sense to keep things in sync with the other apps which were using it.

Anyways, given the hard-disk speed improvements I've found with my move to a SSD (Samsung Evo850, even though I'm still stuck on SATAII due to my old hardware) I am happy to report that QPDFView works quite fine here. No slower then openning up the native Lucide browser...who knows...maybe one day I'll actually move to the CUPS printing system too???

Hi Dariusz, If you don't mind me asking what printer are you using?

Here I have a couple of Brother colour postscript laser printers (DCP-9020cdw and HL-3170cdw).  Both work using the IBM postscript driver with the ppd files imported (they also work with the enhanced postscript driver by Alex Taylor) but let CUPS near them and very strange bad things happen.

The last big print job I did on the 9020 ran to nearly two full paper trays and that was double sided printing, via Lucide and didn't miss anything even with refilling the paper tray.

All of the above was from my OS/2 install.  I have had print errors when printing with Lucide on ArcaOS but put it down to the fact that CUPS is also installed there (had to fight to install any version of the postscript driver).  Now I am wondering if there might be a dll problem since it started after I let yum update everything as a test.

There is trouble with LIBC.

Exception C0000005 - Access Violation

Cause:    Attempted to read from 00000001
          (not a valid address)

After that a listing of about 200Kb.
As far as I know its the last version of LIBC (libc-0.6.6-csd6.zip) and the last version of FF (firefox-45.9.0-4.oc00.pentium4.7z).
So what's wrong?

Hi Ivan,

Hi Dariusz, If you don't mind me asking what printer are you using?

Here I have a couple of Brother colour postscript laser printers (DCP-9020cdw and HL-3170cdw).  Both work using the IBM postscript driver with the ppd files imported (they also work with the enhanced postscript driver by Alex Taylor) but let CUPS near them and very strange bad things happen...

Previously I had the HL-1670N, now I have the HL-5470DW. The IBM PS driver did not support all the options, I had to manually import the PPD file, even then I still could not get some of the HQ options to work. Same held true for the Alex's PS driver.

Eventually I got it working correctly (almost all the features I wanted) by adjusting the PPD file (using a lot of the Linux definitions) and importing that into the IBM PS driver.

Too bad that the focus is n longer on Firefox 45.9.0. It still not running on my system due to libc problems, and as far as I can read, I'm not alone with this problem.

What are the symptoms?
There is trouble with LIBC.

Exception C0000005 - Access Violation

Process:  FIREFOX.EXE (05/21/2018 17:17:07 51,129)
PID:      48 (72)
TID:      01 (1)
Priority: 200

Filename: LIBC066.DLL (10/26/2014 20:16:29 1,361,666)
...

I have here,
libc066.dll  │ 1361663│19/01/18│ 8:10a
which appears to be 4 years newer and 3 bytes smaller then yours. Is Firefox picking up a different version of libc somewhere or is exceptq screwing up in the libc it is finding?
Look at the bottom of your trp file, there should be a listing of "DLLs accessible from this process" and verify that the correct DLLs are found.

Hi,

Firefox comes with a txt file called  rpm_requirements.txt it clear states what is needed to run Firefox.

I have no issue here and is having latest libc(same as David).

Check if you have another version version installed somewhere.

Hope you get it sorted out.

That's weird, I have the latest libc, only in zip package (libc-0.6.6-csd6.zip). At the bottom of the trp is a very long list of dll's. I will overview it again against the list from mozsupport-2018-05-05.zip.

This would be the latest libc in zip:

Is there a specific reason why SM can import (or auto-update) NoScript 5.1.8.7, but FF cannot? Its minimal required FF version is 45.0, and 5.1.8.6 works with FF.

I've had problems auto updating some extensions with SM, haven't tried much with FF.
Hmm, looking right now, I'm still on NoScript-5.1.8.4 (both SM and FF) and the newest I see is 5.1.8.3 on AMO.
Hmm going to noscript.net, with Firefox (SM is using the AMO for SM extension) I do see 5.1.8.7 along with this tidbit,
Quote
Notice: you may need to open about:config and set your xpinstall.signatures.required preference to false in order to install, since Mozilla doesn't support signatures for legacy add-ons anymore.
And doing that allowed me to update it in FF.
Note that soon Mozilla will be removing all classic extensions, which will be a bummer.

edit, note that SM doesn't require signed add-ons so isn't a problem. Both SM and FF are now updated. Probably going to have to do it manually from now on and eventually support will be dropped for our out of date browsers.

Thanks, the overlooked FF setting works here too. I'm used to manual updates, if anything to check what the latest old version is. This time SM updated itself, but 5.1.8.7 is the first version which required changing this FF setting. And perhaps the last versoin, albeit september 2018 is a changed end-of-service date for our FF/SM. IIRC this date was june or july.

FTR: this may be a latest and last working version, since it isn't updated for a long while, but their v10.2.x versions are rather recent updates: https://secure.informaction.com/download/releases/noscript-5.1.9.xpi (https://secure.informaction.com/download/releases/noscript-5.1.9.xpi). Later updates for our FF/SM browsers are not ruled out, but are probably very unlikely.
