Title: Firefox and youtube
Post by: Eugene Gorbunoff on April 10, 2019, 10:31:38 pm
Please confirm, does Firefox 38 support youtube?

I am using ArcaOS 5.0 and Firefox doesn't support playback of videos.

Eugene

If I remember correctly, no.

You need to try the latest FF.  I have used both the  FFPentium and the FFSandyBrige and both work good.

https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/dry-comm-esr31/downloads/

FFSandyBridge 45.9.0 runs just about everything I throw at it except for sites that require a Windows browser.  I use the OS/4 kernel, the FFSandyBridge, and the AVX libs since the OS/4 kernel can use AVX.  For some reason, I cannot find Dave's AVX libs on line.

The FFPentium runs good with the OS/2 kernel.

With Firefox 38.8.0 I could play Youtube videos, but some months ago that stopped.
Apparently Youtube no longer supports Firefox 38.8.0 , but it still allows Firefox 45.9.

Tom, you are right.  It worked for a very short time and quit working.  That was when I switched to FF45.9.0.

I haven't tried it in sometime but others have answered. Make sure you have the FFmpeg libs installed.

This is a known problem, fixed by updating to FF45.9 for now.
My latest Firefox builds are now at https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/mozilla-os2/downloads/ (https://bitbucket.org/dryeo/mozilla-os2/downloads/). Using a newer compiler seems to have helped with stability.

Here the appreciated i686 build appends entries to POPUPLOG.OS2, albeit I haven't rebooted yet. But I did type the matching SET LIBPATHSTRICT and SET BEGINLIBPATH commands before typing FIREFOX.EXE:

Solved. The only technically required change since FF 45.5 for i686+ CPUs. I didn't use the newer, experimental LIBCX0.DLL. Just curious: is the icon of FF 45.9 (i686, one (ZIP file) size fits all, including sometimes limited disk sizes) a new FF icon?

Generic remark, without FFTURBO.EXE in use: closing FF too soon after deleting the cache files, before a Pentium 4 desktop CPU calmed down, triggered the quick creation of a TRP file. Apparently in a section of code related to closing FF. Patience seems to be an obvious solution.

The icon hasn't been changed in a while, and then it was just making it lower bit depth to work around a lxlite issue, which corrupts 32 bit colour icons.
Yes others have reported that it is best to wait till the CPU calms down before closing.

As far as I know, I am using the 8bit versions. Here's the ones in the source tree.
Edit, why don't mine show up here?
Edit2, OK, it is your png file that shows. Not sure how to make one.
Edit3, screen capture. Seems the nightly/thunderbird-os2.ico is broken.

Dave

I worked on your FFnightly icon to see if it could possibly be improved.  Can't upload from work.  The differences are  that the 40x40 icon is larger and that the white pixels on the icon rims are less.  Will upload after work.  If you like the old one after seeing my modifications, just trash it.

One of the things I just learned is that jpg's are better for converting  to OS/2 icons.

I'm sure all the icons could be improved. They're just the Windows icons converted to OS/2 format.
As I said, they have to be low colour to survive being lxlited as lxlite has a bug that corrupts high colour icons.

FWIW, I redrew the Firefox, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey icons for ArcaOS.  (They're the same design, just updated from upstream, rescaled, and touched up.)  If you have any ArcaOS DVD you can find them zipped in the \CID\SERVER\MOZILLA directory - feel free to take and use them, since obviously we have no IP claim on them.  As you say, you would probably want to delete the 24-bit devices if compiling them into the binary.

Here is the modified nightly.  Main change is that the 40x40 icon is just that and not 32x32.  Also eliminated some of the outer white pixels.

The 40x40 is the only one that was resized and touched up.  the other sizes are are the same icon, just touched up to remove the outer white dots that occur up when a color is lighter than the interior color on the icon. You originally used a 32x32 icon for the 40x40.

Rereading, I guess you're referring to the nightly icon, it's been in the tree for a long time. The difference is that Bitwise was using the official branding and I've been using the default (nightly) branding to differentiate. Strictly speaking, the official branding is covered by trademark and we shouldn't be using due to patching the code.

Just to be clear, the attched icon of the i686 FIREFOX.EXE executable is no longer on fire, and is free of foxes. I've saved the old one for my desktop objects, but the icon in the top left corner of a running FIREFOX.EXE is the embedded new icon.

It may indeed be an intentionally used new icon. If it's new, then I may update a matching folder icon too (old fox, in front of a 40x40 eCS folder icon).

Now the folder icon is old (fox), the program objects are old too (fox), but the icon of the program itself is a blue planet. A change is easy, so switching to blue is fine with me too.

Is this blue planet the new FF icon (at least for your unique FF builds) indeed?

Hi Andre

Dave can correct me if I am wrong.  After reading everything stated, it is my understanding the blue planet icon is used to distinguish the nightly test builds from the approved FF builds. It looks to me like a good ideal to keep confusion down. That is not to say that you cannot switch to a different icon for the test builds if you so choose once the test build is installed.

Yes, that is basically it except the official Firefox icons etc are also trademarked and we're not supposed to use it without permission. especially if we've patched the code, which we have.
The code is here, (linking to github as it seems easier to download individual files there) https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/tree/master/browser/branding (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/tree/master/browser/branding).
previously I was just using the default, nightly I believe, now I'm using the unofficial branding.
It is also possible to add our own branding directory here and have our own browser, something to consider as we change the code.

Understood. I have no GCC (and all other goodies) installed, so I didn't really look at code of nightly builds.

You cannot fully switch to a different icon. You can only override the icon of the WPS WPProgram object, but the icon in the top left corner (of the title bar) of FIREFOX.EXE is the embedded icon.

An example is attached. (Assigned) orange WPFolder object's icon, (assigned) orange WPProgram object icon, (embedded) blue title bar icon.

Dave Yeo doesn't have to install a complex mobile mountain data reflecting system to upload a new version with just a new icon at 1.2kbits/sec, but then I may want (to create) a matching blue WPFolder object too. Hence the question if this embedded icon was a new icon. I do prefer any of the usual orange icons, but I don't mind switching to a blue (folder) icon of possibly a last FF45.9 nightly build for i686 for OS/2.

Based on Dave's confirmation I may now create a blue planet folder icon, and use "our" blue planet icon as the new (default) icon. I.e. no assigned own, different, orange icons anymore. To replace the orange ones (mainly of the WPFolder object, the WPProgram object will use the embedded blue icon by default).

Off-topic, for one due to the patched code, but in general icons aren't always the subject of copyrights. A simple example is the color brown of http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/wps/bf_brown1-0-0.zip (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/wps/bf_brown1-0-0.zip), which is a trademark of UPS. Using the color brown will be "fair use" in that case. There's no competing nor confusing non-nightly product for OS/2 by Mozilla anyway. Actually you'd be promoting their browser for Windows by using a more iconic icon.

I haven't checked if no embedded (blue) icon would be an option for nightly builds, if the system will then use an (orange) icon assigned to FIREFOX.EXE by an user in the top left corner of the title bar.

Hi Andre, everyone...

...You cannot fully switch to a different icon. You can only override the icon of the WPS WPProgram object, but the icon in the top left corner (of the title bar) of FIREFOX.EXE is the embedded icon...

Actually, I do like the original FF icon set, and it is the nightly that kind of bothers me (no offence Dave..lol) only because our platform's reality is that it is the nightlies that actually give us the improved browser versions thanks to efforts like Dave's (I'm benefiting by running the AMD release here).

So if anything I'd love to pull that pesky .exe small icon out and just replace it with the old traditional one. I suspect that it's some type of a resource that's compiled into the EXE itself, not sure if it's even possible to yank it out??? I haven't tried it yet...short on time...

Hi André, it is actually the symbol in the icon that is trademarked. The rules are here, https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/trademarks/distribution-policy/ (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/trademarks/distribution-policy/) which clearly states that we can't distribute the Firefox branded web browser.

Hi Dariusz, yes the icon is compiled into firefox.exe as a resource and can't be easily changed.

Normally you should be able to use resmgr (comes with eCS and also AN) and pull the resources from the exe.
Then, you can replace the icon and use "rc.exe" to readd the resources to the exe (the whole resources segment will be overwritten/replaced by rc.exe). But you might need to use LXLITE /X to uncompress the exe before pulling out the resources and after readding you need to use LXLITE to recompress the exe.

Unluckily Songbird is already a browser/music player based on Mozilla, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songbird_%28software%29 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songbird_%28software%29) and Firefox is another name for Red Panda, which might be getting close to trademark issues, but maybe not, https://www-archive.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/firefox-name-faq.html (https://www-archive.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/firefox-name-faq.html) and https://churchm.ag/firefox-logo/ (https://churchm.ag/firefox-logo/)

If needed (don't think so, after all it's a fork/spin-off) a hardly ever used official prefix may help. Like "Canadian Red Panda".
Which actually can be linked to (a Canadian) Lynx... :-)

Yet another alternative may be an own family name, to emphasize that it's a family of (3) closely related products. In a way Red Panda is a stand-alone name. With the advantage that an icon hardly has to be changed.

It's a shame that all these ideas are already taken as they're good. The bearcat browser, https://github.com/bearcatjs/bearcat (https://github.com/bearcatjs/bearcat), the owl browser, https://owl-browser.en.aptoide.com/ (https://owl-browser.en.aptoide.com/) though RedOwl might be fine.
The Red Panda almost seems the best, but even then there's https://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Other-Internet-Related/Panda-Smart-Browser.shtml (https://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Other-Internet-Related/Panda-Smart-Browser.shtml), while different owls could be used for FF and TB.
I'd suggest quickly Googling names before spending much effort on icons. Seems almost like all the good names are already taken just in browsers, then there is all the other software, eg Mozilla moved away from Firebird due to a database using the name.
Perhaps a shell fish to keep with Arca Noae, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arca_noae (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arca_noae) though that shellfish doesn't look like it would adapt to a browser icon easily and Lewis has commented he doesn't really like software prefixed with Arca or similar.

How about voyager.

Amiga browser, and QNX browser, both discontinued as far as I can tell.
I've checked a few other ideas and they all seem to be taken. There's been a lot of browsers developed over the years.
Perhaps we should just recycle one of these, as long as it isn't trademarked, including the trademark being enforced, it probably wouldn't be a problem with our small community.
Voyager, bearcat, red panda, redowl are all good names. Songbird is probably a bit too close to the former Moziila based browser.

If someone wants to run with any of the above, or others, here's the source that needs redoing. Not all needs doing either as we obviously don't need Windows or Mac icons as an example.

Far-sighted has a negative association, medical and/or social, with translations the intended positive meaning may not be that clear, and Farsight may be a result instead of the way to get there.

Probably good, because of the Q and because of the fact that there are and were brands like Qwest. In general Wikipedia's list of languages can be used to find out if such a word is known in several languages. AFAICT the word Quest is sort of known in the limited list of the official eComstation 1.x languages (Dutch, English,  German, Italian), and one may remember classic DOS games like the Police Quest series. You don't have to be fluent in English to sort of understand what Quest refers too.

Apparently In Italian the word Quest is Cerca (seach'ish), so a list of Wikipedia languages doesn't mean the Q-word is know as such.

I guess any name has to be considered in translation.

Maybe do like Mozilla did.  Change Godzilla to Mozilla.

Yet they used the Godzilla icon.

Graser's Quester seems better than Quest, because this sounds like a tool you can use for a quest. If it's a goal of an app to look for trouble, then "Trouble" isn't the best name for the app itself. In that case I may suggest "Shooter" instead.

FWIW: again, if Quest(er) sounds like a brand and confusion is theoretically possible, then perhaps avoid problems by using a unique family prefix like Mozilla (Mozilla Firefox) for the official name. Like "Canadian Red Panda", a lynx (unintended browser joke), or "Qanadian Quester" (AKA Quester or QUESTER.EXE to us).

I won't look at the provided source code, for one because I cannot test compile changed files without GCC.

No GCC code in the provided source. It's mostly the graphics, icons, pngs, bmps, svgs etc to create the theme along with some other stuff like the name of the browser and some preferences such as home page and the makefiles, which I can adjust.

Okay, I really didn't take a look.

It'll be David's area of expertise then, after having selected winning names and matching base artworks.

I like Quester.  It is a short name.

Another name I like is LookingGlass.

Made a 8 bit OS/2 icon based on the PNG below

Willing to vote for Quester too, to rename the Mozilla Firefox browser. Internationally Quest is clear enough (Police Quest game, ...), and -er is a common suffix (play, player, game, gamer, ...). Even in cases the word Quest or Quester doesn't exist in another language. The urbandictionary.org output seems to be safe too.

Quester, possibly also stylized as QUESTER, is an existing (commercial) name in several of the countries of eCS x.y languages. As suggested earlier, perhaps insert a "Qanadian Quester (Quester)" in a main README.1ST to point out to the owner of quester.com that the domain name qanadianquester.com isn't/wasn't theirs and that the formal Qanadian Quester is a unique name. Or Canadian, if SM's new name won't start with a Q.

The wizard of the latest images does look better than the Dutch Flipje's (Lil' Phil's) grandpa. Hopefully the 40x40 version of a winning icon still looks good too.

AFAICT a looking glass may not be what international users expect what it is (a loupe or magnifying glass, if the icon looks like a loupe/Lupe/loep), and presumably you'd use a looking glass to look at yourself. YMMV.

Qommunia for SM, if someone really wants a Q theme for the whole family. There's the visual link with "communicate". And a lesser visual link with "commune": a group of, in this case products, working together. Or Qommunier/Qommuniquer (to qommunicate in French) for a Q and a -er suffix.

Disclaimer: certainly the -er words may require a French review (e.g. Qom-mu-nier would be better than the internationally more difficult pronounciation Qom-mu-ni-er). And, granted, Qommunia sounds like some left-wing country.
