Hardware / Re: panorama not remembering monotor resolution

Well, ideally, the KVM sends EDID back to the computer, even if the computer is not selected for display.

There is manual resolution on the screen applet, but that does not work on all computers, mine included.

Maybe your KVM doesn't adequately supply EDID? I think I did not imply that it did.

For monitors that implement EDID, it should be working. For the rest, I think you can use panoutil -P (x) (y).

Also, there is panoutil -e... to set custom EDID. It works on my monitor, so I can't really test this.

Utilities / Re: dmidecode and UEFI

I found out that David A. smbios.dll, which is not yet generally available, is intended to find the entry point in all cases, even where CSM is not available.

I tested dmidecode with UEFI boot on, but CSM also on. This dmidecode works well. So does dmidecode 2.12.

I've long ago ported v3.
However, I have not yet gotten UEFI support worked out.

What are the obstacles? It looks to me like you need to have part running on the UEFI boot environment that leaves DMI data for the dmidecode to read (and decode).

When we look at hardware, one of the tools we use is dmidecode.exe (version 2.12) This tool displays a wealth of information about the system, and we use it to fill out hardware reports for the wiki.

With UEFI support coming in ArcaOS 5.1, our port of dmidecode isn't working any more. We need dmidecode v3, apparently, which uses the UEFI to display the system information. I'm curious to know if anyone has looked into what would be required to port dmidecode v3.

Web applications / Re: Our FF and Sync, anyone tried it?
« on: November 24, 2022, 03:32:55 pm »
Thanks guys!

Do you recall by any chance what some of the misses were? Is it, as Dave pointed out, the difference in the Sync versioning between our 45.9x release and the most recent Win stuff (which I think is 106.0.5, at least on my Win2k box here)?

Under iOS, sync would crash, and you would return to the "desktop". I gave up, thinking our Firefox is probably too old. Martin's post seems to verify that belief.

Without handling passwords and bookmarks, a new browser really isn't enough anymore.

I was using it a few years ago for our Firefox 45, but while it works on OS/2, it doesn't work on all platforms. I haven't tried Windows.

I didn't see anyone answer your specific questions, so here goes:

1. According to the docs, it is just fine to attach the drive to Windows. Don't let Windows format anything. DFSee should work.
2. DFSee will back the drive up to some IMZ format. I do not know if this is a published format.
3. If handling >2TB files is an issue, let DFSee break the data into <2TB pieces. I also use smart backup, but check if it works.
4. You can browse the backup for sure, but I think you can also browse the hard drive.

Hardware / Re: Turn off Laptop Display

The only hack I have figured out is that if I use an external monitor, then the internal screen is off. If I then turn off the external monitor, then the laptop is running with the screen off. I can also adjust the brightness of the external monitor.

This behavior started with the T60 and has continued through eight generations to the T450s. (at least eight -- I haven't tested some of the newer laptops)

I'd like to turn off the laptop display. Actually the screen saver ought to do it, but it doesn't.

Is there any way to turn off the display. Can it be turned on again later?

Test machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad T450s, in case it matters.

Storage / Re: Cloning a drive

I do it a lot, since that's how I manufacture laptops and desktops.

I boot from ArcaOS media, and back up all drives. You back up anyway, right? I use zip version 3, with flags qryS to also copy links and system files.

Then I install the new drive, partition and restore using unzip version 6.

Not only does this give a lot of versatility on drive layout, but it tests my backup and restore capability.

SOM is one potential difference. A system with the OS/2 toolkit installed has a different SOM path from one without.

But two identical systems, one prints, one does not. hmmm. I have to think about what Doug posted about changing printers under Lotus.

Hi Neil

Some questions rather than answers:-

1] Does anything print from the printer

Yes. All printers work pretty well for other jobs. That's why I think this is a Lotus issue.

2] What printer is involved

HP M252dw and HP M47x Color Laserjet Pro; both fairly modern printers.

3] What printer driver is involved

 Laserjet and/or Postscript (PSPRINT)  drivers

Applications / printing from Lotus SmartSuite WordPro

I'm looking at a computer that has a bit of trouble printing from Lotus SmartSuite Word Pro. I ask for three copies, collated, but none at all come out.

On a nearly identical computer and printer, it works perfectly. I can't get at the failing machine, so I'm attaching testlog of the machine that works.

I'm not really expecting an easy answer, but I'd appreciate advice about solving printing problems like this. I'm actually kind of expecting that it is significant that it is WordPro trying to print. It's a short document with an image or two, and the spool file is 50 megabytes.

It seems to take a long time for copies to print. And yet, on my regular desktop machine, printing starts in a second or two.
