Applications / Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 for eComStation and OS/2
« on: December 27, 2015, 03:59:57 pm »
Just starting out with the WarpIN install. It says don't install over an existing version. It then defaults to the existing installation directory and won't allow a directory change.

If uninstalling openoffice 4.1.1 is a requirement, it should be listed in the readme.

Did anyone install over 4.1.1? Does it work?

Hardware / Re: Anyone successfully using Brother HL-5470dw?
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:55:29 am »
Since Alex Taylor's manage printers is available, running eCups is no problem for me. However, the OP printer, Brother HL-5470dw is not currently listed.

Is my cups installation out of date?

Neil

The file dialog for eComStation has "create folder". I don't know what Blue Lion will have.

Hardware / Re: Printer support for HP Color Laserjet Pro M252dw
« on: November 21, 2015, 04:48:22 pm »
You know, it's funny how things work. I downloaded the source code from SourceForge, and put in the support files for my printer and it worked well. Then I came back here to report what I had done and saw Paul's new build, done for my request.

Well, I went to another machine, and installed the new HPLIP over my existing eCups installation. I also updated Alex Taylor's print manager because I'm tired of operating the one in the Dutch Language. Well it worked perfectly. Thanks, Paul. And this was a real dummy install. I just followed along in the GUI, found my printer, and after installation tried to print from Firefox. In a couple of seconds, the printer spat out a good print of my webpage.

Notes:
Paul's new build of HPLIP is meant to be unzipped from the root. It will overwrite \hplip and \cups with the updated files.
There are so many supported printers, that it is hard to find the right one.
I plugged the printer into my wired network. I assigned it a static IP. eCups found it, so I did not have to configure the network.
To install the printer, I used Alex Taylor's "Install printer". I never saw any eCups screen. It just worked.

Hardware / Printer support for HP Color Laserjet Pro M252dw
« on: November 20, 2015, 08:30:44 pm »
This support should be built in to HP-LIP, but it needs a newer version than the one shipped with eCS 2.2 beta 2

version of HP LIP that I have: 3.12.10.1
version I think I need: 3.15

I have tried some other printer drivers, but they seem not to work well with my cups setup.
Normal printing kind of works, but I don't have a correct PPD for my printer. I'm experimenting to find a close match from printer drivers I do have.

Anyone else with this or a similar HP printer, let me know how you've got it printing.

Setup & Installation / Re: OS/2 - Locked cursor
« on: November 20, 2015, 01:21:42 am »
If I right click on an icon on the desktop, and select pickup from the context menu I get the mouse pointer the OP describes. If I then right click on the desktop, and select drop, then I get a menu of actions, including cancel.

Is that what happened?

General Discussion / Re: What to do with OS/2 Books?
« on: November 16, 2015, 04:30:06 am »
When I was curator of the OS/2 Museum West, I accepted donations to the library, and I selected the best copy to keep. I actually sold one or two books. All the others were donated to the local public library for recycling.

General Discussion / Re: XEU.com and eComStation
« on: November 12, 2015, 03:40:33 pm »
Mensys and XEU have been fairly silent on their intentions. At Warpstock 2014, Menso de Jong  gave a presentation,  "The future of eComStation"  that is still their most recent position. I can say that the last release of eCS 2.2 beta 2 is a big step up from eCS 2.1 as far as installing on various machines I need to run OS/2 programs.

This is a link to the presentation (in OpenOffice format)

http://www.warpstock.org/filemgmt/visit.php?lid=207

I have promoted eComStation for some time. There is good will and on-going business available under that brand name. If XEU could release even something like eCS 2.2 beta 2 as the final, that would be a big step forward.

As far as eCS being a good end-user desktop OS, there are barriers to that happening. One barrier is simply the passage of time. Even Microsoft cannot make Windows into a good end-user desktop OS anymore. Their concept is a home appliance that is like a cell phone, except you plug it in the wall and it sits on your desk. As people migrate off the PC platform, you have to ask, what would keep you running a PC?

Utilities / Re: Accelerometer / Screen Orientation / Screen Resolution
« on: November 06, 2015, 03:53:30 am »

I found an old copy of thinkpad utilities for OS/2. It doesn't run on my Thinkpad, of course, which is far too new.

I know it's supposed to load the driver, so maybe I'll try it.

All it would do is check BIOS level and maybe turn the light on and off.

With the device driver installed (or not, it makes no difference), this is the result

Command not completed for some reason.
Try again later.
If the problem persists, have the system serviced.

The readme is attached to this message.

Programming / Re: Neo OS/2: some development questions
« on: October 26, 2015, 01:45:45 pm »
These are good questions, Eugene. Let me add a feature request, either for Blue Lion developers or for interested third parties. I would welcome a converged library of the Rexx routines used int Blue Lion. Besides the Rexxutil, there are several libraries used by the OS developers, like lvm, sputils, and others. At least list and describe them, but in the best world, recompile or enhance them. Our users like to use Rexx. Superior Rexx support and documentation will please a lot of people.

1. Which test version of SAMBA server are you using?

2. When I run PMVNC, I get a very large number of unknown attempts to log in. Do you see this also?

Applications / Secure Workplace
« on: October 02, 2015, 06:19:18 am »
I just got a copy of Secure Workplace to play with.

This puts password protection on OS/2 computers and maybe it has other capabilities. Is anyone familiar with this program? Are the authors still around?
