General Discussion / Re: Revolutionary PC Technology
« on: January 09, 2021, 06:56:05 am »
Microsoft showed some real intelligence putting Windows on life-support and moving their attention to consumers and their cloud platforms. Now LinkedIN is nearly as profitable as Windows.

I'm not sure it took too much intelligence - they were sitting on a molehill of money from their windows/office monopolies but they were losing every consumer battle since except for the Xbox.
Literally everyone is now selling the "cloud", they didn't have to come up with the idea - they just used their money to buy up a bunch of cloud services and funnel into that.
I suppose you could say knowing were to spend your money is intelligence though. 8)

But Apple was having big business problems. Microsoft bailed them out, and Apple's board got Steve Jobs back. Jobs killed MacOS 9 and replaced it with NeXt, renaming it Mac OS X. The clones were not included in these plans. OS/2 was out. IBM didn't want it, Apple didn't want it.

I could speculate that OS/2 might have competed against Mac OS X had IBM got behind it. I doubt IBM would have gotten any return on their investment, though. I doubt Microsoft really saw that they were going to lose control of consumers to Google and Apple. IBM at least had the vision to get out.

Yeah true I wasn't thinking about the fact the Apple nearly died during that time and it wasn't until later that Steve Jobs saved them.
I think IBM should have stayed in the fray, evolving, could they have been able to focus on consumers. But it doesn't seem to be in their DNA since they are always focused on enterprise. Like IBM really didn't focus on third party software for os/2 like Microsoft did with Windows... they were more concerned with OS/2 running on servers with custom enterprise software instead. But ignoring the third party software market meant they couldn't compete in the consumer realm.

You have a good point about Microsoft - but somehow I feel Microsoft is taking the same direction as IBM. They have been shuttering their consumer brands and moving to just business focus, with a few exceptions.
Enterprise seems to be were the easy money is - but you lose technological relevance.

OS/2 for Power PC had such promise
IBM spent billions on the PowerPC direction, when they should have put all their resources into dominating the pc market instead.
But sometimes I think IBM was literally the worst company to own OS/2.. would have been a different ball game if Apple owned it maybe :).
But then I probably wouldn't still be using it then..  ah the paradox.

So I have to wonder what would happen if you ran the warp 4 upgrade:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Os-2-Warp-Version-4-Upgrade-with-Bonus-Pack-New-Factory-Sealed-Free-Shipping/164572994163?hash=item2651509a73:g:JEAAAOSw7Hlf0wiw

On ArcaOS :).
Would it trigger an inter-dimensional collapse?

Will have to get a floppy drive to find out.

Applications / ArcaOS Yum updates question
« on: January 08, 2021, 11:34:22 am »
Just curious - if you keep your subscription active - does running yum updates upgrade your arcaos to new releases automatically (for example if 5.5 comes out).
Or do you need to install from the ISO every time a major update is released, and yum updates is only for updating software in your existing installed release only?

Thanks, I didn't think about accessing my phone via FTP and I see there are plenty of apps that do just that  ;D  Appreciate it!

Is there anyway to mount a phone to pull pictures off it.  I'm guessing not since even mounting fat32 requires special formatting with dfsee... But just checking since I've been out of the os/2 game for a while.

From what I can tell compiling QT for Bitwise Works was not an issue. It was because of the webkit DLL that is so big.
The DLL is 250 MB and the other QT 5 DLL's are a lot smaller.
Why does the size of the file matter, if it doesn't need more memory to compile?

Also, hair-brained idea:
Could you take an open source compiler from say freedos or reactos, and then add the function to use a swap file from a ramdisk, to reach higher memory when compiling?
Keep in mind a have no idea what i'm talking about really, just blue skying.
I just remember in the DOS days I used a compiler from borland c++ that would generate .exe files.. so it made me think maybe there is some open source compiler that would work with OS/2, from one of those other projects.

Hardware / Re: Snap Vs Panorama - Refresh rate problem.
« on: December 20, 2020, 08:47:56 pm »
Incidentally, I have a dell inspiron with a TFT display that for the first time is not giving me headaches (installed linux on it). Not sure what is different on it since iv'e tried several other similar displays. I thought my eyes are maybe too sensitive since they are light green when maybe brown eyes have more shade to them.
I envy people with better eyes!
Also iv'e noticed that amoled phone screens don't give me any headaches while TFT phone screens do. Amoled uses phosphors similar to CRT, so they are compatible technology other than the fact that CRTs have a gun that lights up the Phosphors whereas Amoled lights up the panel more directly.
Weird world.

An enhancement for the Wiki would be for laptops and desktops that are listed to support OS/2, eComStation or ArcaOS that they should run a program to scan the useful things about the computer and generate the technical parts of a Wiki page.
We should probably help. Speaking of which I wasn't clear how to sign up to contribute, without just posting here since if I can do it direct that would be best.

As was said, it depends on the hardware and BIOS whether the old Snap will work for you. Panorama is newer and likely the developers haven't taken refresh rate into too much consideration as so few people are still using CRT monitors.
If you notice bad performance, desktop hangs or crashes, you might have to revert to the newer Snap. Personally, I think if using a video card that Snap supports and if it works well, Snap is the way to go. Testing is the only way to judge though.
Note that sysbench (available on Hobbes) will allow you to benchmark the video performance.

Thanks.. Snap seems stable so I will go ahead with that. The performance seems OK.

The so called MTRR registers need to be setup correctly. If this does not happen on multi CPU system the video performance can be implode...

What is the MTRR registers and what is the way to set it up to not implode?
Wow you guys really know your stuff on os/2. Feel like a complete newb, and I know allot about Linux so thought I had a first class nerd pass but alas I apparently have a way to go lol.

Sorry everyone. More than one person thought I was serious when I was just joking. I thought it was obvious with the  :o smiley and the "wait for it" since people have been waiting a long time for some kind of updates that didn't come, but clearly need to be more careful with my sarcasm/joking.

Also, context - I use a CRT monitor since modern LCD monitors give me headaches.
Not sure how long that strategy will work since CRT is quickly becoming too old and probably the capacitors will burst.
But so far so good. :)
