Hi Dave

Retested with the new profiles - standard Seamonkey, no addons.

Both those show the gif bug ie https://bug1793279.bmoattachments.org/attachment.cgi?id=9296847 causes cpu peaking.

Hi Dave

I reset layout.frame_rate to 0 and had a look at the links in your post.
No reaction from Seamonkey here ie no cpu peaking, no animated gifs either...

Hi Dave

Changed layout.frame_rate to 1 and restarted Seamonkey.
Seems to have cured the cpu peaking problem but introduced noticable sluggishness into Seamonkeys response time.

Changed layout.frame_rate to -1, restarted Seamonkey.
No cpu's peaking and Seamonkey seems as responsive as I am used to.

Yes, NoScript in use with options to Allow os2world if needed.

Thanks

Pete

Hi All

Posted last message too soon as the cpu peaking is back ...

I've tried with 2 newly created, standard - no extensions added, profiles to see if this is profile related and I get similar behaviour.
The cpu peaking with the 2 new profiles seems to be centred on https://www.os2world.com/cms/ as selecting to open a forum post in a new tab then switching to that tab "calms" cpus down - until switching back to https://www.os2world.com/cms/

I've tried to show this with the attached files
home.png  - 1st peak shows Seamonkey having just loaded os2world followed by a small (2 second?)gap then continuous peaking
forum.png - switched to a forum topic, cpus not peaking
home_af.png - after closing forum tab, back to cpus peaking

Opening a forum post in a new tab and switching to that tab does not "calm" cpu's in my usual profile, they carry on peaking. So my usual profile may have a problem...

The cpu's peaking with the new profiles after loading os2world homepage should not be a profile problem though.

Could it be a Seamonkey/support dll problem?

@Rich
Yep, it is an oldie
It is Ye Olde Warpcenter cpu meter - I prefer Warpcenter to Xcenter.

Hi All

It seems that whatever has been causing cpu peaking on os2world has now gone away - see attached Normal01.jpg

Changes this end:
1] I logged out of both website and forum on my last visit
2]  Moved Gotcha! Quiet out of Startup folder - probably totally irrelevant

I have obviously logged in to the Forum to post this, logged in at os2world.com and started Gotcha Quiet! none of which have started cpu's peaking.

Maybe Martin found something to tweak? - In which case, Thanks Martin.

Hi Dave

No, "Block images from www.os2world.com" makes no difference.

I have attached 2 images showing this cpu activity:

desktop1a.jpg shows small activity starting seamonkey then opening theartofsound website

desktop2a.jpg is around a minute later after loading os2world

This continuous cpu peaking only seems to happen with os2world.com, and continues after leaving the website, hence my suspicion of some sort of runaway script...

Hmmm... Should have checked what Dooble (qt5) does - no cpu's peaking at all.

Seems to point at a Seamonkey problem but it is a problem that has only just surfaced.

Guess it could be a script from a url blocked in Dooble but allowed by NoScript in Seamonkey...

Any thoughts?

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / os2world website script problem?
« on: December 04, 2023, 02:37:01 pm »
Hi All

Over the past couple of days I have noticed os2world.com causes lots of peak cpu activity, far more than usual, to show in Warpcenter cpu monitor - even if all that is open is the homepage.

Is this some sort of runaway script? I ask because cpu activity does not stop when I close os2world and open a different website that I know - and have double checked - does not cause lots of peak cpu activity and only closing the browser (Seamonkey) gets rid of the cpu's peaking - very pretty it is in 12 colours.

I have also run Seamonkey visiting several websites that do not cause cpu peaking, then visited os2world which causes cpu's to start peaking, then closed os2world and revisited previous websites which all now show cpu's peaking.

Anyone else seeing this?

Hi Andrew

Picking up on this "... so I have yet to know the joy of the installation process." and I seem to recall you are UK based so some Install bootup tips:-

Make sure system BIOS is set to boot from whichever install media (DVD/USB Flash)

At 1st menu: select Boot from install media

Next Menu: Select to start installer using own settings (similar wording) which will allow you to select UK keyboard amongst  other tweaks

Once installer has started accept License and somewhere towards the bottom of the next page in Installation Type you select to Update/Upgrade which should reinstall to existing drives/paths.

You should read through [Install Media]:\ArcaOS50_UpdaterSupplementaryGuide.pdf *before* starting

If the Update/Upgrade option does not appear you may have to try and trick the installer by editing the installed [Boot Drive]:\sys\install\install.flg (text file) to show an earlier release eg:- copy install.flg to install.flg.ORG (in case of mishaps) then edit install.flg changing ArcaOS 5.1.0 EN to ArcaOS 5.0.7 EN, Save and Exit. Now the installer should find a 5.0.7 installation to Update/Upgrade - hopefully...

I have only tried 1 Update/Upgrade: 5.0.1 to 5.1.0 which went fairly well - may have found a SNAP bug in the process though, have to double check.

Hi Doug

If you need to boot win7 frequently you could consider re-installing win7 in uefi mode. That would cut out the need to use BIOS to switch between modes/os's.

Hi Andrew

For b) My experience with importing PDF files into OO is it is best avoided as OO cannot open PDF files and tends to mangle them when doing an import as text. Your best option would be if WS and QP can export in M$ format ie DOC and XLS otherwise I think you are stuck with RTF as export format.

Hi Andrew

Not sure what you have done to cause booting problems... The only thing you seem to be admitting to is renaming database.txt - which should not cause these problems.

When booted to the Maintenance partition can you access files on the usual boot drive without problems?

In case of a): I suggest you use the install option to Update/Upgrade existing installation as that should re-install to existing locations.

Hi Rich

Yes, moving  "Refresh Removable Media" to a different folder resolved the Drives problem - but moved the problem to the other folder. So, not really a fix...

I have found several other folders that display icons at Normal size and cause a system hang when setting them to use Dynamic Icons.

After lots of reboots I can suggest a possible cause: Opening the Properties of an object involved in system hangs eg  "Refresh Removable Media" and selecting the Icon tab results in an incomplete display of that page, Current icon image and text missing and yet another system hang - this occurs with icon size set as Normal as well as 56x56 and other sizes.

Seems that something went wrong during install of pngdesk and/or pngicons.

Uninstalled Dynamic Icons, deleted the os2.ini file entry and rebooted, then checked that accessing "Refresh Removable Media" -> Properties -> Icon did not cause any problems, image and text displayed.

Installed Dynamic Icons (again) with the same results as previously.

If Dynamic Icons works without the above problems for other people I can only guess it is something on my system causing the problems. Not sure what to check though...

Hi Doug

Possibly a read of https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,3425.0.html, aka UEFI: Dual Boot - Windows 11 and ArcaOS 5.1, along with https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,3466.msg41660.html#msg41660, aka Booting eCS and MCP under UEFI, will be of help.

Hi Rich

Both config.sys lines work equally well - or badly in my case.

I did not install Dynamic Icons when installing 5.1.0 but since purchasing a slightly bigger screen (Dell P2222H) with more acreage have installed from the wpi packages in the ISO file.

After a reboot I set icon size to Dynamic, 56 for both Icon and Tree views. Shortly after I bumped into a problem: Opening the Drives folder results in a system hang, Drives folder status bar shows "Collecting objects...", mouse moves but cannot click on anything, C-A-D works to get me to the option of WPS Reset which only delivers a black screen, Trying C-A-D again then Reboot(Restart) option results in a blue-ish (turquoise) screen of death, only the system box Off button works.

After a reboot retried opening the Drives folder with the same result.

Rebooted, reset icon size to Normal for Icon View and can now open Drives folder.

Prior to the Drives folder problem I noticed that some folders opened in icon view did not use the icon size 56 but were displayed at Normal size.

Any ideas on resolving the above problems?  - which may be related...

Regards

Pete
