Title: Generating an image of an HPFS HDD.
Post by: Martin Iturbide on July 25, 2019, 09:21:02 pm
Hi. I'm lookig for some advice here.

I have someone  (far away from me) that has an old ATA hard drive formatted in HPFS, only the hard drive. I want him to extract an image of that HDD and send it over me so I can check the contents with some OS/2 virtual machine.

What software (preferable freeware) do you suggest to generate an exact image of an HPFS drive from Windows or Linux, since this person do not longer has OS/2? Any format that you suggest for the image, should it be a RAW image?

Regards

There is also Partimage http://www.partimage.org/Supported-Filesystems/ (http://www.partimage.org/Supported-Filesystems/) that actually supports the HPFS file system.

I have used it when I upgraded some of my systems.

Indeed! Partimage is a great piece of software! You may also consider the dd command under linux or the bootable [Clonezilla (http://"https://clonezilla.org/")] distribution. This one supports a whole lot of partition types. And if one is not supported, the software switches over to the dd method by itself.
Using all three free software products at times, and each one supports its own methods. Clonezilla is the one supporting and automating the most functions on its own. It also supports imaging over the network via different methods, or of course locally.

Yes, it is fully functional besides a reminder that it is unregistered at startup and no support.
