Title: theseus 4.001 trap in usbmon
Post by: roberto on May 23, 2021, 09:06:37 am
The Theseus program, when I click twice on the USBMON it generates a TRAP.
If someone is not produced any TRAP, let them tell me and I will tell them what I want.

I leave you this patch, it runs in a DOS session, starting it with Qbasic, at the beginning of the system boot.
It's not finished, it's experimental, but it seems to work. In some computers it produces an overflow error and it is not possible to execute it.
The name for the file is pk-r05.bas

Post by: Martin Iturbide on May 23, 2021, 05:08:29 pm
Hi Roberto
The Theseus program, when I click twice on the USBMON it generates a TRAP.
If someone is not produced any TRAP, let them tell me and I will tell them what I want.

I have reproduced the trap. I have ArcaOS 5.0.6 and Theseus 4.001.00 installed (https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/memory/thes4001.exe).
On the main Theseus page, if I click "USBMON" I get an OS2KRNL trap.  I tried two times for the moment.

Regards

The Theseus program, when I click twice on the USBMON it generates a TRAP.

I have checked on OS/4   -  no traps here.

Hi

It can be interesting if someone without the 14.202 kernel can do the testing too. Like OS4User did, but maybe with the OS/2 Warp 4.52 kernel or an older ArcaOS without 14.202.

Hi Andreas

Can you give a little bit more details of your system to try to find out why it does not trap to you?
Here it is my "testlog generic" log just to compare driver versions.

Regards

Here is mine.

BTW: The personalized drivers made a lot work to x their info out. What a mess and for whom?

No problem with any of my AMD processor units.  Maybe the trap is processor based since roberto, Dave and Martin are using Intel CPUs while Andreas and myself use AMD units.

Hello Ivan
I will ask you a favor.
Doble click in USBMON
PTDA address xxxxxxx doble click
Select in Virtual memory manager
          Next Arena xxxxxxx
In menu - Funtions - Show memory at linear address hex
From this address to 3000 bytes (no 100 bytes)
Save the file and send it here.

My problem is that with the browser I usually see youtubes and at the same time I look at ebay things, and with the patch this improves me a lot, but when my memory runs out, the sound gets intermittent, and I don't know why I think it could influence this. The only way to know is to try it.
Thanks

Uuuh I do understand the code of your basic script. But I have no clue how this fixes the kernel trap.
How can do stuff from DOS VDM process ?

I made a memory dump and based on what I have seen in PMDF. If could be wrong...
Theseus used to have its own driver for debugging purposes. That driver was later integrated in the kernel by IBM.
When you double click on USBMON something triggers an error in the kernel and that is why the system blows up with a TRAP.
But my analyses could be wrong.

I also do not understand, why on Martin's system USBMON is started as a child process of pmshell.exe.
On my system it is started without a parent, that is, as a detached process.

I am running eCS 2.2b as a VirtualBox guest, with a W4 14.201 kernel, I have my own USB driver stack installed but I don't see how the USB stack would make a difference.

It works for me. No trap when double clicking USBMON.

Roderick

The trap happens in a 32-bit kernel function called "THEPtdaFile_get". I am sure that "THE" stands for Theseus, so it is exactly as you suspected: a Theseus helper function implemented in the kernel fails. Guessing from the name, the function tries to query the PTDA address (per task data area) from the load path or some such. It traps because the ESI register contains a nonsense value. It should contain a proper flat address (either private or shared) but in both trap cases, it doesn't.

For everyone where this trap occurs: what happens if you select System->General System->Modules and then have a look at USBMON.EXE in the module list ? Is there anything that looks strange or suspicious ?

The strange thing is: on my system, with the given value of a certain variable "SELGDTLAddr" I would experience that very same trap. But obviously, that code path is not executed when I doubleclick on USBMON. How is USBMON started on your system ? I have a load icon in the "System Start" folder but I also selected "Auto Monitor" in the USB port object (you only ever need USBMON if you have installed a USB port on one of your printers in which case you can select "Auto Monitor" from the port settings).

Code: [Select]
FCAA35E0  0CC0  USBMON     LX   W:\OS2\USBMON.EXE

Weirdly enough, I can't quickly figure out how it is started. It is in OS2.INI and I can see the script that called the install script, but no traces in the startup folder or config.sys

What do you mean by "it is in OS2.INI" ? I cannot find any mentioning of USBMON.EXE in OS2.INI.

What IS really remarkable is if I remove "USBPRT Auto Monitor" (which is USBMON.EXE) from the Startup Folder, that object is recreated on the next system restart ! Therefore, it seems that USBMON.EXE is and has to be started from the Startup Folder. On my system, it is then started as a detached process (it shows up in the leftmost column in the process view in Theseus).

Dave, what happens, if you then doubleclick on the MTE entry (leftmost number on the line you have pasted) ? Will it display the content correctly or will that also crash Theseus/the system ?

Dave, maybe the object is in the XWorkplace Startup Folder instead of the legacy WPS startup folder ? For me, it is in the legacy WPS startup folder.

No, it's always recreated in <WP_STARTUP>. That one is always processed before any XFldStartup object. Maybe it's recreated early on startup via PM_InstallObject, indirectly added by USBPRT.SYS. Quite unlikely and I suppose its notification window during object creation can't be disabled.

OK, the USBPRT Auto monitor is in startup,  looked too quick before.
If I double click the MTE, I get another window with a bunch more info as expected.

Actually, it does get recreated, if you delete the object. I don't have a USB printer, so I just MOVE it somewhere outside of a startup folder. It doesn't get replaced (it already exists), and it doesn't start (nothing to start it), so it can't take up resources, or cause problems. Not a useful approach if you do have a USB printer, but it makes sense when you don't have a USB printer.

hi All

I have never had a problem deleting the USBPRT Auto monitor from the Startup folder. This is something I always do immediately after an install as it is never required as I use a wireless printer - and most modern usb printers require cups which does not use the IBM USB print system.

This discussion is going into the wrong direction.

The real question is: how can Theseus bring down the whole system just by double clicking on one of the processes in the process view ? That should not happen.

We know the trap occurs in Ring 0, in a helper function invoked by Theseus. It happens for some people and it would also happen for me (as much as I can tell from the code around the trapping location) but for some reason the trapping code path is not executed on my system when I double click on USBMON (or any other process).

It would at least be helpful to know what needs to be done to circumvent that trap. A trap in Ring 0 is really a bad thing to happen.

I'm not Ivan, but here's what you asked for from my system.
Thank you very much Andreas. He has served me at least to discard it, from what I am looking for. And I have looked elsewhere at videopmi.dll, and things improve a lot. They are still experimental, but I can access more virtual memory, and I start to see things that I have never seen before. This is usually good.
Watching a video I got this message, in an overload, I attached a photo. New changes in the pk-r06.bas file.
The trap in usbmon, it seems to me something of little importance, almost anecdotal, but you will say.

I have never had a problem deleting the USBPRT Auto monitor from the Startup folder.
Finally confirmed here, thanks. I had to clean my inis.

First ckeckini /C /Y:2. cleanini.exe reports a bug and won't start, so I used xfix to delete many handles. After that, there were not too many orphaned program objects. Maybe I should have protected them first. After recreating these, I started cleanini /c /delall, always with a long list of paths below [Handles] and [FolderPos] to remove.

I had 3 blocks of handles before (many years ago I had 6) and am now down to 1 block. With xfix I deleted almost half of the 3 blocks.

What I've seen with cleanini the last times I used it: It requires a Ctrl+Alt+Del restart (press it 2 - 3 times with CAD handler), not just a WPS restart. Otherwise desktop icons move on the next full start. Unfortunately that still happens with Rich's newest version if IFX, but I always have my tool installed in a shutdown folder, because of that. (Due to the bypassed shutdown, it couldn't work.)

I guess the recreation was caused by having accessed an archived desktop unintentionally with the WPS. Hope that's the same for Lars and others.

The Theseus program, when I click twice on the USBMON it generates a TRAP.
If someone is not produced any TRAP, let them tell me and I will tell them what I want.

could you try the same  on OS/4  ?

I think so. I have a free partition where I can install it. I tried it a long time ago and I really liked it. But for compatibility with the official I preferred to continue using the standard.
Exactly what you want me to prove, I'm not sure I understand you. Keep in mind that I work by intuition, sensations of what is better or worse, and I do not know the OS4. It is very difficult for me to detect small differences if I do not know the system. But I can try it.

Both are valid, but the one I propose is much better

The idea of this was to try to combine image, sound and memory.
 They were very disarmonic.
From Echo those differences are the ones that have helped me to look for the imbalances.
 Specly sound and mahjongg.

As a curious fact, version09, or the previous one that I present,
was the first time that I could play a complete game at mahnjogg,
 after having started a youtube.

Now with version 11 that I present to you, mahjongg fails me.I hope that is only what is wrong.
The previous version 09, already showed how the memory was better freed when closing tabs
 in the browser.

Also comment that the simplebrowser seems to like it,
I would use it if it were not for the hits of the copy paste etc.

I have little tested but here it is:

PKR11PIr.BAS

It is optimized with this swapper:
SWAPPATH=C:\ 39 2048
Code: [Select]

REM PKR09PI.BAS PASA A 11
