...It is advisable to backup your profile before swapping. I keep an earlier version of NoScript for v38.8.0 as v45.5.0 use's a more recent version of NoScript due to gecko versions.

Ian brought up a great point, I do ALWAYS make a full backup of my profile (the HOME\mozilla.org\...) directory structure before any such major ugprades.

Going back to 38 from 45 I did not however restore from my original 38 profile backup (wanted to see if I could seamlessly go between the two) and that still worked successfully.

Hi Andi,

...Do you know this 'sort of benchmark standards' for OS/2 FF and compared the different versions? What are the results?

No, I do not know the specifics, other then knowing that there are general FF test-scripts. The Mozilla FF Developer resource site has all the pertinent detials, see => https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/QA. I can only guess that this BETA 8 release passed all of these. Of course I have looked through the FF Wiki (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/wiki), but other than general release info found there, there are no reports to tell what tests passed and what failed. Maybe it is all locked up in the source tree somewhere. I am also on the mailing list so I certainly see the issues which are being reported and resolutions being provided, but that is all...would love to see more, maybe as an OS/2 user with significant amount of software development experience I could contribute something???

My feedback re: testing benchmarks is based on my professional experience as a database (Oracle) software developer...believe me, at the Enterprise level in particular, you dare NOT release something even to a UAT (User Acceptance Test) that is not nearly 99.9% complete. The reality of the corporate life is different then this OpenSource thing, I understand that, but underlying software engineering principles should NOT be!

Given the issues being reported on this release it begs the question whether the methodology we follow is capable of delivering?

Guys...not much progress (any actually LOL) on the official FF45 ticket...and given how un-usable the 45 release is for me I went back to 38...for now anyways!

Lars reported similar issue, he went some steps futher trying to identify the root cause but wasn't able to find it.

For what it's worth, I did not change anything else (like RPM package pre-reqs) to go back to 38 and so far things seem stable and the application responsiveness of course is back to where I expect it to be...so that would point to an actual difference in the 45 release, as opposed to say one of the underlying libraries that 45 is using. This rationale of course only holds true for the libraries that are common to both 38 and 45.

Hi Greg,

...Now, can anyone shed light on why when run on my system the response is very slow?

Several others have noticed this problem already...I logged a ticket with the FF folks, see => https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/issues/208, sadly not much activity on that issue at the moment.

On my machine the 38 vs 45 difference is so significant that is feels like a proverbial "day & night" difference...that's how unusable 45 is. Subsequently I went backt o 38, hard to understand why 45 was deemed suitable for wider release...???

Dont' get me wrong, I sure as hell appreciate the work that goes into this, but there has to be a sort of benchmark standard, even within the OpenSource community, which must be passed before software is released. All Enterprise software enviornments I have ever been part of followed precisely that, multiple testing cycles before any end-users would be asked to try stuff out. I get that it's officially a BETA, but as advertised it is billed as BETA 8, so presumably this "ready for wider audience" benchmark was passed...again, not sure how, too many people seem to be stuck on basic usability.

...Yet another DLL called JPEG.DLL? Or does this one replace one of the more usual JPEG v8 DLLs?

I'm guessing that it replaces it given that it is supposed to provide the same functionality albeit at a much improved speed(s).

I installed it on my machine, given that it was a FF 45 pre-req, no complaints from ANPM/RPM/YUM (which on it's own is questionable, it really should at least give you some sort of warning and/or notification). Anyways, things still appear to work fine here...

Roderick and Dave,

Guys, great feedback from both of you.

So why am I so particularly pissed about this?

Well, it is funny you say "you get what you pay for"...sure, I understand that.  To make it easier to deal with this aspect of our hobby that is also why I have donated/purchased the various sponsoring units in the past...w/o digging through my confirmation emails I honestly can not tell you how many times I've done that, nor which specific project or groups I supported, but I will tall you that I had ABSOLUTELY no problem trying to do my little 'part' of helping with the big picture.

I will say this, my contributions over the most recent couple of years have gone towards things such as:
1) OpenOffice
2) SystemLoad / RDesktop
3) NetDrive
4) PMView Pro
5) AN Device Driver Subscription
6) and various individuals: Unix ports or KO Myung-Hun's MPlayer to name a couple

Therefore, in short, my issue is not due to a proverbial "entitlement" some end-users at times exhibit, especially around Open Source projects, I do completely understand that. My issue instead is with what appears to be a very low level of "professionalism" I am encoutering, and it also does not happen to be a one-off example.

Silvan in fact is the very same person whom I exchanged several emails with just a little over 6 months ago regarding supporting/funding the team for the OpenOffice build...so to have him nearly have a "hissy fit" over my request in the ticket for detailed instructions just seems literally childish...??? I just don't get it...if it's a matter of too many projects then he should pull out of the stuff he clearly can not support and either arrange for a smooth transition to someone else or simply state that something like PRM/YUM can not be maintained on the OS/2 platform. Heck, for those of us who chose to transition out of the old ZIP driven DLL bucket into the RPM/YUM thing it would at least create a more realistic picture of what we can and can not count on within this OpenSource model.

We should all be interfacing with each other in much better ways, especially in such a small community as our OS/2 group is today.

This is a bit of a vent/rant, but I figured that's what the forum is for where I can share my experience at the very least, and if I am DEAD wrong, I want to hear from you guys.

So recently I logged a ticket for the RPM team (http://trac.netlabs.org/rpm/ticket/254)

My ANPM installation was failing to update the 'rpm' package. The log contained information which I uploaded to the ticket. The individual who picked up my ticket, alias 'diver', right from the start assumed that I could apparently read his mind and despite the fact that I requested multiple times that he provide detailed CLI command to troublshoot the issue with, he failed to do so.

Finally I got fed up with the BS. You see, I have some 20+ yrs of IS industry experience, a lot of it at the front line(s) of customer support, and given the type of bahaviour I saw in this ticket exchange I can tell you plain and simple: no corporation would allow a customer to face such poor behaviour. I stated so in the ticket, at which point in time I was told point blank by 'dmaik': "...your behavior is clearly arrogant...".

Am I the only one to encounter this? I do not know who these individuals are, although I am guessing who 'dmaik' maybe be. Anyways, what floors me is that in such a small community that OS/2 is today we still have this type of an attitude, that almost condesending "I know stuff and you do not" type of a talk-down.

I am only familiar with the OS/2 version of the RPM/YUM implementation. Given my current use of this process it is clearly buggy and/or maybe the logic is not sound. I have now had multiple issues with either failed updates, or most often pre-requisites that the RPM/YUM do not respect. The RPM team, whoever they may be, simply do not get that, or they simply do not wish to understand the full level of problems that the extended user community faces, or so it feels at the moment.

Hi Moritz,

Did anyone had success with changing setting?
...
"I will try disabling the SET NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER=1" did not make any difference.
...
I am using an X200T

Yup, I did try that, as well as the other application options that Dave mentioned...no impact...stuff is still pretty choppy. I'm using ATI X850 XT PE here...

However, besides that "little" annoyance I find that FF45 is pretty darn solid...no crashes yet, seems to better behave when it comes to memory consumption, and visually it now appears to display all sites correctly without weird missing fonts, etc, etc...so good improvement!

« on: May 21, 2017, 03:19:22 am »
Installed the 45.5 release of FF having installed the various pre-reqs...it came up OK, but very quickly found out that pretty much all feedback to any input (window scrolling, text typing - such as in this window) is very choppy!

This means, there is a pronounced delay in the browser response.

To better describe this is to say that if one were to turn off the "Smooth Scrolling" feature the results would be what I'm seeing.

I will try disabling the SET NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER=1 mode next, just to rule it out...

Is anyone seeing something similar to this?

BTW: this is on a 5 core SMP box...plenty of CPU power, but strangely the CPU monito shows very little activity.

Hi Greggory,

...What's the link to repo?...

Not sure about the link you normally key-in, but here are the contents of the YUM repository setup on my system:

I think what you need to key-in is the "baseurl" information...

Multimedia / Re: recent developments for USB audio
« on: May 13, 2017, 06:38:57 pm »
Hi Doug,

...Which one to use, depends on exactly what you need to do. ArcaOS will, of course, have the AN version...

OK, fair enough...and so much I had assumed. However, the "AN Version" is precisely what??? Is it a fork off of the stuff Lars is working on? Is it a release of Lars's stuff once that's deemed non-experimental? Or is it an entirely different release altogether?

So here is the my bigger question: if I'm testing Lars' releases, can I safely assume that my feedback will ultimately make it to AN's stable release?

Right now this seems to be a big un-known.

Lars,

Can you explain the relationship between your USB releases and AN's?

I ask because part of my reason for the purchase of the "Drivers" subscription from AN was to keep some sort of continuity in my driver upgrades. My primary focus was on the ACPI stuff to get a stable SMP system, but I figured going to a single source would make that easier for other drivers as well.

Meanwhile, you are the definition of "cutting edge" in the OS/2 USB-land, and I find that AN has consistently fallen behind in their updates.

So can you elaborate on whether there is any sort of collaboration between you and AN? Should I simply dump AN stuff and revert back to your releases?

Hi Lars,

...On the other hand, my OS/2 MUT partition only uses 1 core out of the 8 that I have, so that's also a difference....

Why just 1 core out of 8? Is it because you can not get the other ones running successfully using the OS/2 SMP drivers, or by choice?

I ask b/c I can only run 5 of the 6 cores on my machine, booting with the 6th core enabled causes me the dreaded WPS "Blue-Screen" lock...running SNAP here though.

Networking / Re: DNS resolution...strange problem?
« on: May 03, 2017, 03:15:31 am »
Whoa!!!! Found the problem...

I went through the process of purging the FF native DNS cache...that did not resolve my issue, so then it hit me "...hey, what if the page just keeps on re-loading the cached version...?". In hindsight it sort of seems almost too-obvious. Well, my cache was currently 340 MB in size, having purged it my problem went away...holy smokes!!!
