Applications / XWorkplace and missing folder contents...
« on: October 01, 2017, 06:05:35 pm »
So I've been struggling with this for a while now. Running XWP 1.0.11 here, SMP system with ACPI 3.23.06 release and 5 of the 6 CPU cores enabled. The 6th is off-line since attempting to bring WPS up with it enabled results in the dreaded WPS blue-screen hang.

Alright, so the issue is that any folder views, but most evident with the Drives/filesystem objects, stop populating. Initially, they will show objects, but eventually as I open new ones they halt, so the folder remains blank. As soon as this happens, even though it may have happened with a filesystem folder first the remaining WPS folder objects stop populating as well. The result is that my OS/2 box simply becomes unusable, I can no longer access any of my data or program objects. Re-boot is the only solution.

I have not found the root cause yet. I tried many things, playing with various setups, Lazy icons on/off, etc, etc. What I did notice is that putting my system into a single-core mode (by shutting off the remaining 4 cores) appears to work fine, so that implies the XWP folder functionality somehow runs into an issue in SMP environments.

There is a LOG entry generated in the xwptrap.log file (attached to the post, it's a bit lengthy), but that log does not tell me much.

Since 1.0.11 upgrade I have attempted to use the XView option...maybe that is causing the problem? Hard to tell, because even when I do not open any folders which use this mode the issue does show up anyways.

Most recently I found the following issue in the 'Workplace Shell' object when reviewing the 'Sort' tab I find multiple occurencies of the 'Real Name' option, see screenshot in the attachment. I took some time to go through the INI files but could not find where XWP gets this info. The HELP system gives the following info:

Sort by real name: this sorts a folder alphabetically according to file-system names. Since only file-system objects have real names, abstract objects will not be sorted properly.

...needless to say, I have not been able to figure out why I see multiple entries. This may be a whild goose chase, but I have nothing else to go on at the moment.

So the question to everyone: have you seen this behaviour, can you shed any light on what else I should look at?

Thanks!

Hi Dave!

...As for the large xul file, just lxlite it. Use http://home.earthlink.net/~steve53/betas/lxlt135-shl-20121201.zip and the flags that Mozilla uses are,
Code: [Select]
/yua /ydd /yxd /ynl /anp /b- /cs+ /d /i- /ml1 /mr2 /mf2 /r+ /u+ /x- /zs:0 /zx /zd.
...

Awesome advice, I did all the DLLs and EXEs...massive compression...makes for a faster load for sure!

Thanks for the details re: Mozilla CLI parameters...I put them in the lxlite cfg file as [firefox] setup.

Guys...the FF 38.x release was for me probably the most stable release on our OS/2 platform.Just about everything I tried worked correctly, including Maps with heavy usage...however, the browser was getting outdated, so less and less stuff would actually allow you to use the numerous features, they simply became inaccessible.

FF 45.x here had definitely gone backwards in terms of stability and so forth, but, the browser at least allows the vast majority of the web site specific features to work. In my case, the Maps that were never an issue on 38.x are now a hit-n-miss on 45.x, but the G+ stuff now completely works!

I figured I might as well toss this one in because the thread so far has a mix of responses dealing with various FF releases.

The team is making great progress on 45.x, I for one wish that they would do another full release so we have a bit less of that debug overhead - my XUL.DLL is 435M in size, compared to 37M in 38.x, and despite the various highmem load options I have tried (code, data, or both) the browser pretty much eats up a good 1.5-1.8G in less than 12 hrs of use.

Hardware / Re: Success using Brother L6200DW printer with ArcaOS.
« on: September 24, 2017, 01:30:39 am »
Hi David,

Great post, thanks for getting it out there.

I picked up a Brother HL5470DW nearly 2 yrs ago, it is no longer being sold by Brother. I was able to get it running with the Postscript drivers, however, there are some combinations of print job settings that actually cause the PSCRIPT driver to trap. Subsequently, I am using a sub-set of options, but was always wondering how much further ahead I would get with the CUPS driver.

The model you picked up literally seems to be a new version of my HL5470DW, or at the very least simplar printer engine, etc, etc...granted, yours is more of a workgroup printer.

So I'm curious, have you been able to put it through it's "paces" using the CUPS configuration? What I mean by that is:

1) are the various printer quality settings (300,600, HQ1200, 1200, etc) working as expected? This applies to both text and images.
2) are you able to use the built-in scanner?
3) are the other normal options such as Duplex printing, scaling, booklet printer all working?

Thanks again,
-Dariusz

Same here, currently using 45.9.x build, but I'm hoping they will release an updated one soon since even the 45.9.x is a bit of a work-in-process. For example, here it exhausts a lot of memory very quickly, so literally within a couple hrs of use my FF is using about 1Gig of RAM... :( , mind you, I typically run about 8-10 separate FF windows across my virtual desktops...so yeah, I suppose maybe I'm taxing it a tad?

It works awesome!!!

Wow, this is really great...I mean all the stuff I have ever wanted to know (or was curious) about in the normal TCP/IP traffic exposed and available for review.

Here are a couple of icons I quickly grabbed on-line...in case anyone else is looking for something prettier than the OS/2 CLI session icon.

Thanks again Paul!

Applications / Re: Visual BASIC for OS/2

You know, interesting thread. Some years ago, not all that long ago actually, I was trying to introduce the concept of programming to my son, he was about 11-12 yrs old at that time. I struggled to find an easy IDE type environment that would make for a simple type of rudimentary programming, sort of along the lines of what I experienced writing my first BASIC/QBASIC/GWBASIC programs...LOL, ahh, those were the days!!!

Anyways, I came across the Visual Basic mention on-line as well, but nowhere was I actually able to find anything handy. We eventually settled on QBASIC and that was fun. Other Windows based environments were availabe, such as Python for example, and since they appeared a lot more digestable to my kid that's what he pursued.

So that begs the question: given the age of this type of stuff, has any of it actually gone to that "abandon-ware" status? There certainly are vasts amounts of previously commercial software that has goen down that path...

I love Larsen Commander...but I only wish it was more "WPS-ish"...LOL, meaning, it sticks pretty well to the Norton Commander interface, and as such - at least I haven't found a way to change it - it will not accept things like "CTRL" or "SHIFT" to select a filename or group of files for an operation...grrh....LOL, again, I love the GUI, incredibly well done...and options galore!!!

Interesting that '/int10textgrfxsafe' combined with 'mode co80' gets you some results, for me there is no difference. Although....if I start with an actual DOS program object, such as my old trusty Borland C++ IDE, that object must be set to FULL SCREEN, however, once it is started I can successfully switch to WINDOWED option by hitting ALT-HOME combo.

Sooo...for some reason I can't go directly to that window mode, but can get there in a round-about sort of a way.

Hi Paul!

I got this latest release and upon starting the app from CLI I get the following:

=== START ===
[G:\APPS\TCPIP\WIRESHARK\BIN]wireshark

(process:401): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)

Abnormal program termination - pid=0x0191 - tid=0x01 - G:\APPS\TCPIP\WIRESHARK\B

Abnormal program termination - pid=0x0191 - tid=0x01 - G:\APPS\TCPIP\WIRESHARK\B
IN\WIRESHARK.EXE
=== STOP ===

QT 4.7.3 is installed and working with other apps. Maybe heimdal? I have the previous release (heimdal-1.5.3-os2-20160723.zip) which was required as part of the SAMBA client update you did a while ago (Kerberso authentication I think???)...I did not install the recommended heimdal-1.5.3-os2-20160730.zip hesitating to impact my working SAMBA configuration. libc066 & libcx in-place as per the latest REL availability in RPM/YUM.

If I can go ahead and update heimdal to your 0730 release, or better yet, if I can install the RPM/YUM heimdal-libs release 1.5.3-1.oc00 I'd be happy to, although I'm not sure if that matches your heimdal-1.5.3-os2-20160730.zip release? The only potential problem is that the RPM/YUM release is i386 platform, whereas all my current stuff (or the stuff I can control) is i686.

Just a shot in the dark here, but isn't this a "known" issue which affects certain video chipsets???

...and just to clarify, by "known" I mean I have read/seen this type of issue being described in numerous forum posts in the past...

On a personal note, here is what I'm seeing with ATI X850 XT PE video card (yesss....some old stuff here, ha ha...): Windows DOS simply does NOT work, the frame pops up, but no command prompt ever appears, switching to full-page results in a blank full-screen. I normally have to kill the session.

Rick,

What specific information are you looking for?

I spent some time writing an enhanced version of 'cache386 /s' command. Not quite sure to be honest if I ever finished this, it was really more of a learning effort to undertsand OS/2, the programming platform, etc.

Anyways...since I have been a heavy HPFS386 user I have some pretty good amount of docs on these. Most of it sourced on-line, some of it may still float out there. Bulk of this is system calls/APIs though...

...I test on AMD 4 & 8 core boxes, both running ARCAOS as host....Some problems, yes, but a huge improvement over eCS...

Can we have a confirmation that the dreaded WPS Blue-Screen-of-Hang is now gone with the SMP setups > 5 cores?

I ask b/c attempting to boot with my 6 cores of the AMD Phenom II x6 is simply not possible w/o a guaranteed WPS freeze just as the PM shell comes up, I would love for that issue to be behind us!

Programming / Re: Open source OS/2 projects that need help?
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:49:25 am »
Rick,

Great question...the lack of developers is always spoken about, but maybe this thread will help with bringing some understanding to what individual projects, or even what types of projects need help, ie device driver mention for example.

From a personal perspective I have a fairly large library of MJPEG video files that I badly need to convert to something like MP4. To do this I am using AVxCAT (awesome app) and Dave's drop of ffmepg (3.0.1). However, the ffmepg release is showing some problems with memory consumption. Subsequently Dave has exchanged a couple of emails with me on the subject of building a working compile environment. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I will be able to provide some updates on this.

I would love to become a maintainer of the OS/2 port of FFMPEG...can I do it??? Not sure yet, but worth a try. It would be great for this thread to continue and maybe even build out to a general Wiki like documentation of what "standard" baseline development environments are out there, what is needed, etc, etc...

Hi Rick,

...I had some difficulty installing Visual Age C++ because I had to reboot after various stages.  I haven't done that in an OS for a while and it threw me for a loop. :-)

Once I got it installed I was stunned.  Visual Age C++ is amazing considering its age...

Which version of VAC did you install?

I am asking b/c I have the fully blown 4.0 here (with various fixpacks) and as you said, even though the product is aged now it is still extremely impressive. Considering that it was always resource hungry, now with the faster machines and better hardware capability it really zips along quite nice.

Part of that install, in my case, was the option to select the standard C/C++, which I did, thus installing the 3.6.5 release (or maybe it was a separate install altogether??? lol, it's been a while...).

What I have always wondered about is the choice between the two? Which one is best suited for what types of apps?
