Why not follow up on Alex his question ?

Roderick
The problem with the greyed out "IBM File- and Print Client" is solved. Now I have the problem that the installer wants a floppy disk "OS/2 Peer Diskette 1".
Bernhard

Why does the solution above resolve the issue ? I am asking this with reason...
You see there is areason the option is greyed out in the Selective Install for networking....
Did you look at Alex his advise for IBMLVL.INI ?

Hello

I have ArcaOS 5.1.0 with UEFI mode and installed it with Panorama, on a "Lenovo Miix 510-12ISK".

I'm not able to enable DPMS on Doodle Screen saver to automatically shut down the monitor. All the options are grey without the possibility to enable it. It was the first time I installed ArcaOS (or any OS/2) on this machine, so I have no reference to know if it ever worked.

Is it something I may be missing, because I remember that Panorama was able to work with Dooble Screen Saver to shut down the monitor, if I don't recall correctly.

Regards

I am not certain DPMS will work when booted in UEFI mode.  I seem to understand the DPMS call can only be done via the VESA BIOS. And the VESA BIOS is not present when UEFI mode is used.

VOIP.SYS was only made for limited amount of Thinkpads that had an issue with the VDM.
That the DOS windows does not work is known. You need UEFI boot for this.

Hi All

Having installed IBM File and Print I find I cannot start User Accounts using the User name that works to logon to Workgroup because:-

The user ID 'PETER' is not defined locally/...'

Cannot modify Network User Account and add a password for the same reason.

Looks like an install cockup.

So, how to connect this system to the network and actually transfer files around?

Regards

Pete

You installed the file and print client. Why do you assume the username Peter is present ?
As local admin login with userid userid and password password. Then you can create a username after you have logged in.

Hi All

I re-checked the state of CSM in the BIOS and found that support was Off - think it got reset when I did a BIOS update.

Having enabled CSM booting worked - but installation failed, the lcu.l1 log shows:-

Mon Sep 11 01:45:30] Product Returned 0x00FF, Unexpected condition.
[Mon Sep 11 01:45:30] Base Resources install failed.

The lcu.l2 log is empty

The DIALOG.L2 log starts with lots of these

SYS1041: The name * is not recognized as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Guess something needs tweaking in the install routine(s)...

Will report back when/if the problem(s) get resolved.

Regards

Pete

Take into account when CSM boot next to UEFI boot is enabled that you need to be certain that you select the proper boot method. Because if a system can enable support for UEFI and CSM boot then the USB stick will be listed twice.

This could indicate issue with the bruned DVD or USB stick . Either use a different USB stick or burn the DVD at a lower speed. This type of issue's normaly indicates read error on the install media.

Hi

[
While I was with AN, I wrote a util to create a GPT disk from a blank or MBR disk but it wasn't included in 5.1. I don't see an alternative in the distro, so people may have to use Windows or Linux for that task.

AN's response is

"If no partition table exists, the ArcaOS installer will automatically create the
table as selected in the Installation Volume Manager during installation (it is
entirely possible to create an MBR table or GPT without the filter being
loaded)."

So, good to know.

In the meantime I managed to get to the end of Phase1 by de-selecting Dynamic Icons - the only change from previous attempts at install.

Not much help though as the reboot started Windows 11 instead of Phase2 of the install.

Checking the BIOS boot order I found AN Launcher and selected the install partition, boot started and stopped fairly quickly showing os2lvm.dmd on screen and the "OS/2 cannot operate your hard disk..." message.

Not sure where to go from there... all partitions look good in miniLVM, chkdsk does not report any problems.

Regards

Pete

If the disc is bigger then 2 TB  then when booted from install media you can use initdisk.exe. But this should only be used on empty discs.
If the disc is smaller then 2TB and its empty the discutil will ask you if you want a GPT or MBR dsc layout.

Hi

Thanks to Rich and Roderick for their responses.0

I suspected the UEFI CD/DVD boot option would need a UEFI boot related file on the CD/DVD in use.

I'm currently downloading the Win11 ISO to perform new installs of Win11, along with ArcaOS5.1, on the NVMe drive - when it arrives.

Regards

Pete

The ArcaOS ISO file is in the end the same as a Windows ISO.
For boot from DVD an IMG partition image is located inside  the ISO. The UEFI  firmware scans the DVD at a preset point and that is where it loads the ArcaOS UEFI loader.

The USB stick and ISO are hybrid bode.

So they can boot in UEFI mode and BIOS mode.

Hi Sigurd,

Is there a setting in the BIOS - something like 'Above 4GB decoding'? If so, you need to turn it off. The message you show is typical for video memory mapped above 4GB, which of course OS/2 can't handle.

If not, and you really want to get down into the weeds with it, you could try removing RAM so there is only 4GB available. That might force the video memory below 4GB, but then you only have 4GB of RAM for other OS's, and even so, video might take a huge chunk of the 4GB left.

Regards,

Hello Dave,

1.The remap code that I described should be able to deal with this. This setting can in my experience only be found on systems that have a CSM.
Since an operating system like Windows 7 or Windows 10 32 bit might still need to load with a CSM.  With no loading only 64 bit OS'es well, no need for this setting to exists.

2.  Hmmm removing memory down to 4 GB will resolve the issue. I wish it was that simple.

Here is my knowlegde described best, based what I have seen on the Arca Noae tester list and what I have been reading on UEFI over the years. It was the intension at Mensys to get UEFI in eComStation. But this never got of ground. Anyway so my description is based on what I know from Mensys days, picked up from Warpstock Orlando last year and the from the AN testers list.

Anyway so your question is where does this come from Martin:
"Video memory cannot be reassigned to 32-bit address!"

Well here is the background thd way I understand it. Have a seat as this is slightly complex.

The first thing is that ArcaOS comes with a 64 BIT UEFI loader. However the OS/2 kernel still is 32 bit.
When a system with a UEFI firmware boots up the CPU still is switched on real mode. Like an XT CPU, yep even today.
However then the UEFI firmware switches the CPU to long mode (64 bit).

Well OS/2 does not support long mod, also the Intel CPU can not run certain modes the OS/2 kernel needs.
What the UEFI loader does is the following.

UEFI firmware just like a PC BIOS has calls to talk to the CD Rom DRIVE, SATA or NVMe controller. However they function differently.
On legacy PC BIOS You might have heard of term int INT13. INT 13 is disc I/O via the BIOS. This is what the BIOS/OS/2 uses to load the OS2LDR, OS2KRNL and BASEDEV drivers etc.

UEFI firmware also has disc services. However they work differently. All UEFI loaders prepare to load the need files to load the OS from hard drive via UEFI system calls. Once the OS is ready to boot the UEFI loader calls the UEFI API Exitfrombootservices().

So just before ArcaOS starts and you see the text OS/2 boot blobt in the left hand corner, thats when the UEFI loader begins load the OS2DLR and OS2KNRL  from a temp ram drive.

However what also happens is that the CPU is switched from long mode to 32 bit legacy so that the OS2KRNL can run.
Elbert Pol and Alex Taylor both had a laptop that had this error message. In the UEFI loader is code that goes out on the PCI bus and re-maps PCI MMIO ranges to 32 bit memory location. Why ? Otherwhise the drivers and kernel would not be able to talk to hardware with an address above the 32 bit address range.

Elbert Pol has a laptop where all devices have 64 bit MMIO ranges and these are remapped by the UEFI loader BEFORE the OS2KRNL gets loaded.
The issue is thhis brand new code and it might contain bugs. However its also possible this might not work in all cases.

If you get such a message here is how you can get the logs from the UEFI loader.
https://www.os2.org/viewtopic.php?p=28539&sid=7c108ad6baf4d31112ec69f674e23f7b#p28539

Note that difference in ALT F1 processing. This is in the UEFI loader NOT done by OS/2 but by the UEFI loader.
But the UEFI loader does more. Ever looked at the Panorama screen object ? It also provides a extremely thin VESA vidoe BIOS
for Panorama to function on systems with a VGA card.

I hope this creates a somewheat better understanding of the new things. If there are issue's please encourage people to also open tickets in the AN bugtracker. There is a lot of new code and there can always be bugs. And some of these bugs the community can not fix or understand as this all brand new.

Hi All

My new system box has a 128Gb SSD with Windows11 installed.

Being aware that Windows can install files in hidden partitions I booted the system using DFSee - how I discovered that CSM needs to be Enabled to boot from CD/DVD on this system - and found the following partitions:-

/dev/sda                                      GPT disk 1

ID     ux     Dr                       Type, description                                                      Format                          Size (Mb)

01                                         Fsp + GPT             hdr/pta                                      -------------                            1.00

01      1                                 EFI System  (ESP)                                                    FAT32                           100.00

02      2                                 MS Reserved (MSR)                                                                                          16.00

03      3     C:                        Windows Basic Data                                                NTFS                       121375.00

04      4                                 Windows Recovery                                                   NTFS                              611.00

05      5                                 Fsp + GPT              pta/hdr                                      -------------                              1.30

I have a 1Tb NVMe arriving in the near future and plan on removing the 128Gb SSD.

The question is: Do I reinstall Windows11 or copy existing install from the 128Gb SSD using DFSee?

Also, What creates the EFI System partition and the starting and finishing Fsp + GPT partitions - or should I copy those as well as the Windows partitions?

Thanks for any/all advice

Pete

While you could use Dfsee, if you windows 10/11 install has no data on it you can do two things.
Make the Windows disc smaller:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/overview-of-disk-management
With a GPT disc layout a breeze!
Do not use this tool on a MBR disc layout....

To reinstall Windows 10 or 11 recover the Windows registration key.
Forgot about Vendor ISO's. If you want to get all the preload garbage from your PC vendor out.
On www.google.com search for windows 11 media creation tool
This tool also exists  for Windows 10,
You can make an ISO file or a bootable USB stick for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

I wasn't expecting anything specific, just wondering if there might be some improvement in memory management.

Nope nothing has been modified that I am aware off.
I think the whole introduction of UEFI and GPT is already a very big upgrade for OS/2.

As I wrote before. Go back to the eCS 2.2. or 2.1. manual I wrote back then. To some extend it shows the headaches of using MBR support with OS/2 and other operating systems.
Again if you have a working system, well stick to it.

The benefit of GPT discs are the following:
Not stuck any more with disk geometry headaches such as 512 GB, 1 GB or max of 2TB.
It breaks the 2 TB disc barrier with NVMe and AHCI discs.
No more arguments with Airboot and or boot manager.
DLAT sector on the disc is gone.
The LVM drive letter gets stored in a portion of the GPT partition.
So for OS/2 it looks like perfectly presented partition. But on the hard drive its normal GPT partition.
Also because it has its own partition type. If all goes well Windows should not offer to accidently format it.
Remember that NTFS, HPFS and JFS are type 7 on MBR...
You can use just any UEFI boot manager. Yo can even add ArcaOS or AN launcher to Windows boot manager.
With a GPT disc layout you can use just about any normal GPT disc editor.

The GPT limitations are currently:
It seems some Linux distro's at setup delete the LVM drive letter from the GPT partition. They should not do this.

Compared to Airboot the boot is now also determined by the NVRAM variable that is setup. Some systems you need to enter the UEFI firmware
to alter the order.

Now everyone has had their say, the one thing I don't see are comments about improvements to the OS/2 part.  Can I assume that it is still the same as 5.0.7?

What improvements to the OS/2 part where you expecting specifically ?

Setup & Installation / Re: UEFI: Dual Boot - Windows 11 and ArcaOS 5.1

That is what makes GPT disc layout a lot easier compared to MBR disc layout. MBR setup, especially with more then one operating booting from a disc an be problematic to say the least.
If you have a setup that currently works, keep it. New to setup that support UEFI boot, dump MBR.
GPT discs, because of the filter driver, is slower then MBR setup disc. But on an SSD or NVMe disc in daily usage you will not really notice the performance the GPT filter driver introduces.
