Setup & Installation / Re: UEFI: Dual Boot - Windows 11 and ArcaOS 5.1
« on: October 30, 2023, 03:37:47 pm »
Using my Lenovo ThinkCentre M900 with the EFI partition assigned drive letter Y:, I copied refind_x64.efi to Y:\EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI, replacing the AN Launcher.
I copied refind.conf-sample to Y:\EFI\BOOT\refind.conf

At this point, I can reboot the computer and refind can boot OS2LDR.EFI, which presents a number of drive letters to boot.

I added an entry for my ArcaOS 5.1 boot volume F:
Code: [Select]
# This is an entry for ArcaOS 5.1 in UEFI mode
menuentry ArcaOS-F {
    loader \EFI\OS2\OS2LDR.EFI
    options "F:"
}

After this, a menu entry for ArcaOS-F appears that can boot the F: drive

I added an entry for my ArcaOS 5.1 boot volume H:
Code: [Select]
scanfor hdbios,internal,external,optical,manual
This adds a cryptic entry that loads the AirBoot boot manager. From Airboot, I can boot the H: drive
If I use the shutdown menu on ArcaOS 5.0 to select the H: drive, Airboot will automatically boot H:

rEFInd does not come with icons for ArcaOS
The conf-sample file implies that rEFInd will display graphics by default, but I see only text
I tried to replace the title bar with my own graphics file, but nothing happens
Code: [Select]
banner banner.png
rEFInd can load the BIOS setup utility, which is nice

It sounds like you really need a Debian type of Linux to install rEFInd. Also the Windows or Mac preboot environment may be able to do that. It's not really clear how to reach those preboot environments, though. We would need some kind of utility for NVRAM I think to set the rest up.

The instructions are not very friendly, just use some utility program, but not describing where the utilities came from or what they do.

How about in the trivial case, where ANLauncher is already working. How do you rename all of the rEFInd parts to work with an ArcaOS installation?

In my experience, rEFInd works really good with ArcaOS.

Is there an install program for rEFInd that works on ArcaOS?

Applications / Running Converseen
« on: October 22, 2023, 03:18:26 am »
I saw Tellie has made a port called Converseen, which looked like it could convert those HEIC files that the iPhone creates when you take a picture. I love PMView, but it doesn't support that format.

Unfortunately, I can't get it to run.

The readme.os2 instructs me to use yum

yum install libraw

Yum fails, but helpfully suggests installing LibRaw.

yum install libzip

Yum fails here, but does not make any suggestion.

At this point converseen does not have the needed libraries, and fails with SYS0002: The system cannot find the file specified. "RAW_R23"

Interestingly, PMDLL cannot make anything of converseen.exe. It puts up "Building tree", but never any other information.

I'm using netlabs-rel repository.

Mail-News / Re: Moving archived SMTP emails to AOS-5.1 Thunderbird

I've used ImportExportTools for this, but mbox and maildir formats have many dialects, so you may wind up needing to clean up your content a little bit. I was able to put a few million messages into Thunderbird at the end.

In the end Thunderbird used about 6 GB of storage for several million messages.

Networking / Samba Users and Groups
« on: October 17, 2023, 04:51:49 am »
I'm running Samba server for OS/2 on ArcaOS 5.1. I am trying to understand how Users and Groups work, and also how the kLibc User Manager works along with Samba.

When ArcaOS 5.1 installs Samba, it makes a user named User, and password is Password. It also makes a password for the user I named during the install, Warp30. I don't know the password for this user, either.

The first time running Simple Samba Configuration Center (SSCC), the icon has the parameter /install. After that, the parameter is changed to /config. I'm not sure what actions /install takes. It takes a root password at that time.

It would be nice to be able to snapshot the users and groups, so that I could preserve a working set. It's too easy to make Samba stop functioning.

Ironically, I made a presentation on Samba at Warpstock 2015. I'm not sure how to get good information on the topic. I've somehow preserved my one working set of users since then, but I don't really understand in depth how to maintain users and groups.

My particular mode has VGA, which worked well, but I now use DisplayPort on a 4K monitor. The com port (or serial port) is also optional. So watch out when you buy to see if those are included.

UEFI is available. I'm currently upgrading my machines to ArcaOS and UEFI. UEFI works, but you want to update the BIOS to the latest.

Uniaud works. The wired Ethernet works with MultiMac E1000B. There is no WiFi driver.

Interesting side benefit: even though this is a tiny computer, it has one SATA 2 1/2 inch bay for SSD or hard drive and one M.2 NVMe bay, so you  can run both and have a lot of disk space.

I work a lot with the Lenovo computers and ArcaOS. The M900 (I assume you mean tiny) will work well with ArcaOS 5.1. It was a popular model, so plenty of used examples are out there.

I've tried the RAM disk with 8GB and 16 GB models, and I usually just make it drive Z:

I tried the USB-c to DisplayPort adapter with my 4K monitor, and that is satisfactory. I have heard that not all USB-c graphics work, but this one does.

I found this page that discusses HPFS, JFS and ArcaOS disk layout.

I happen to have two ArcaOS 5.1 partitions booting under UEFI on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M900. One has a 2 GB HPFS ArcaOS boot drive and a 10 GB JFS Programs, Home and Unixroot drive.

The HPFS drive boots in 24.4 seconds, while the JFS drive boots in 25.2 seconds. You will need a stopwatch to see the difference.

Tried, but couldn't get it to come up on Dooble or Firefox in Arca 5.1.  My internet is a bit flakey under Arca, so I'll try Windows (UGH.)

Applications / Re: ArcaOS 5.1.0 and cups

I used "Install Printer" to install what it called a Cups printer. It seems to work.

Can you explain what isn't working? I've always found cups a little bit confusing.

AcpiTree is a sample program from the ACPI toolkit, which is distributed with ACPI, but not installed by default.

Applications / Drag and drop printing
« on: September 14, 2023, 12:42:35 am »
So, if I have a group of Lotus WordPro files selected, and I drag them to a printer, they print. But they don't seem to print in the order they were in the folder.

If a group of files are dropped on a printer, what determines the order in which the files will print?

Hello

What is the solution for a laptop without ethernet port to get the wireless working?
- USB to ethernet first and later one of this routers or "Ethernet to Wifi" adapter?

Regards

If you have USB 12.14 installed, have a look at the USBASIX network driver. It seems to support a lot of modern USB to ethernet adapters, including many that are sold as "Docks".
