Applications / Lost / Missing Software for OS/2
« on: July 13, 2023, 09:01:28 pm »
Hi

I want to create this thread to get some help on finding some old software for OS/2 that it is missing.
I don't have any attachment to this software, but since I'm reorganizing Hobbes and checking some archives sites, I want to see if it possible to find some old software to have it properly organized and archived.

You are also free to post requests.

Games / PMRobots 1.4
« on: June 09, 2023, 06:17:27 pm »
Hello

I recompiled this little game called PMRobots with gcc, just in case someone wants to give it a spin.

It is played with the mouse. The goal is to make the Robots crash to move to the next level.

Here it is the source code just in case:

Applications / TOR and Dooble
« on: June 06, 2023, 01:49:40 am »
Hi

Paul ported a new version of TOR:
https://smedley.id.au/tmp/tor-0.4.7.13-os2-20230606.zip

Can someone let me know if I'm configuring Dooble right?
It seems that some sites no longer see my real IP, but some https sites does not work.

Programming / Source Code Text Editor Suggestions
« on: May 25, 2023, 06:19:17 pm »
Hi

I had been editing some C code for some PM samples/demos I want to compile. (there is another thread about it).
But I'm not sure about the Text editor I'm using, I use STE (Qt) but it has an ugly bug to reload files that it always show, so I'm open for suggestion.

If possible want a text editor that:
- Have the line counter on the left - Mandatory  ;D
- That have "tabs" on the top to switch between open files
- If it puts colors on the C code.¨
- Easy file reload, if the file changes while it is open (to check logs)

I really liked STE because of that "File Explorer" (Pic attached) thing that it has, but that "Reload Bug" is killing me, and it seems that STE is no longer being developed.

Please let me know your suggestions. I don't want to start a text editor war of what is better, just let me know what you like and I will try it out.

Applications / Why some Fonts looks "Irregular" bigger than 12pt ?
« on: May 19, 2023, 12:00:38 am »
Hi

I'm not sure if I asked this before.
I need some bigger fonts (not because I'm getting old, just because we use higher screen resolutions now  ;D ) but when I try to use a font that allows me the go bigger than 12, it looks "irregular" (not sure which word to use, since I don't want to use "bad").

I'm using a 1920x1080 VM and the Font Palette can show you my issue (Screen shot attached).

Why is this happening? Is there any way to improve my situation?

Article Discussions / OS/2 for Mach 20 - Final Collectors Item?
« on: May 03, 2023, 02:37:22 pm »
Hi

Today I was reading the "The worst-selling Microsoft software product of all time: OS/2 for the Mach 20" article. It says there was a special customized version of OS/2 for a hardware called March 20.

Quote
One of my former colleagues spoke with the person who took over from him as the support specialist for OS/2 for Mach 20. According to that person’s memory (which given the amount time that has elapsed, means that we should basically be saying “according to legend” at this point), a total of eleven copies of “OS/2 for Mach 20” were ever sold, and eight of them were returned.

I guess that makes the "OS/2 for Mach 20 " diskettes the final collector's item for OS/2  ;D

Programming / Compiling a PM sample with GCC (2023)
« on: April 22, 2023, 03:40:46 am »
Hi

I had setup a new Dev ArcaOS 5.0.7 VM to keep going with the "fun" of trying to compile some old Presentation Manager samples with GCC and other open source tools.

This is my Vanilla ArcaOS VM with:
- yum install git gcc make libc-devel binutils watcom-wrc watcom-wlink-hll

And I made sure that I have on the config.sys
 SET INCLUDE=C:\usr\include
 SET EMXOMFLD_LINKER=wl.exe
 SET EMXOMFLD_TYPE=WLINK

I'm very happy that the samples we checked before are now compiling and working.
- https://github.com/OS2World/DEV-SAMPLES-PM-BitCat
- https://github.com/OS2World/DEV-SAMPLES-PM-PMHello

My new compile attempts, questions and cry for help come next.

Hello

I'm still waiting for ArcaOS 5.1 to get released (I hope they don't release it on April 1st), and I think that 5.1 is an important milestone for the platform. Finally UEFI will be available (spoiler) and after some months the Arca Noe will have to think more about the future of the OS and possible update their roadmap page.

So, should we just let Arca Noae made their roadmap or should we (The community) try to suggest something?

We already discussed two things:
- Hardware Compatibility Wishlist for 2023
- Software Wishlist for 2023

Of course that Arca Noae does not has the resources to make all our wild dreams a reality, but I want to pass a summary of these two discussion threads to Lewis to see if something is interesting for them to do or support. (As a suggestion, not a demand)

What else do you think?

Programming / Using AI to Code for OS/2
« on: March 31, 2023, 12:24:23 am »
Hi

Today I was talking with a friend and he told me he is using a lot ChatGPT (https://chat.openai.com) to generate code for applications.

I was wondering if someone with better skill than me can do some crazy experiments to try to clone some of the OS/2 functions, an maybe try to move closer to the crazy dream of an open source OS/2 implementation.

I was asking ChatGPT to clone me some OS/2 CPI functions, but I'm not sure if it is providing me things that does work, since I don't have the skill to compile and test those things.

Can someone with more development skill try to see if something can be taught to the AI and produce something that will work for us?

Regards.

Hardware / eMMC Supported?
« on: March 15, 2023, 07:00:46 pm »
Hi

There was a question the OS2World Discord Chat asking of eMMC was supported on any of the OS/2 distributions.

For what I know no, I haven't get report about eMMC being supported.  The only implementation of eMMC that I'm aware of is for SD card readers on laptops and I haven't get any report of it working. Any other use?

For what I have read eMMC is slower than NVMe and it seems that the laptop market is more in favor of  NVMe these days, and they even seems to be removing the SD card slots from laptops.
But what do you think?

Applications / Arca Noae Package Manager - WarpIn repository??
« on: March 14, 2023, 01:15:43 am »
Hi

I noticed that ANPM 1.1 now shows WarpIn packages and it has a WarpIn Repository that can be included.

How do someone can create their own WarpIn repository server?

Applications / Netlabs-exp RPM and Python issue?
« on: February 22, 2023, 06:23:24 pm »
Hello

I just got a fresh ArcaOS 5.0.7 VM, updated ANPM to 1.1 and everything is fine for the moment.
Since I need to experiment with some software I register the Netlabs exp RPM with "yum install netlabs-exp"

If I do a "yum update" I get a long error.  I can update one by one the packages, but not python.

If I do a "yum update python" I get:

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

--skip-broken does not make any difference.

Any suggestions?

Article Discussions / List of Supported Laptop Computers - ArcaOS
« on: February 13, 2023, 06:10:14 pm »
Hi

I had been requested to revisit the wiki page of "List of Laptop Computers"

Not sure if you remember but I have:
- List of Laptop Computers - For post 2015 laptops
- List of Laptop Computers (Archive) - for pre 2015 laptops.

I had been suggested to request feedback to update the page.
Any more laptops that you suggest?

Applications / Calmira Reborn
« on: February 10, 2023, 10:38:23 pm »
Hi

This is not a OS/2 news, it is a Win16 app news. I remember that I used to run Calmira on Win-OS2 long time ago. This version keep running on Win-OS2.

http://huntertur.net/calmirar.html

Quote
Calmira Reborn is fourth in the line of Calmira projects. It is a fork of Calmira LFN 3.32 by Alexandre Rodrigues de Sousa, itself a fork of Calmira II 3.3 by Calmira Online!, itself a fork of Calmira 2.2SR by Li-Hsin Huang.

This fork does not place much emphasis on new features and instead focuses on fixing issues I’ve discovered with Calmira LFN while using it on my old computers.

Calmira should ring a bell for most Windows users of the ’90s. Calmira adds a Windows 95-like desktop environment to replace Program Manager on Windows 3.x, along with tons of other features and niceties. It makes using Windows 3.x a lot less cumbersome, and I am definitely going to set up a new Windows 3.11 install in PCem to try this new release out.

General Discussion / Some friendly reminder about the OS2World forum
« on: February 06, 2023, 05:20:46 pm »
Hi

I just want to remember you that on the OS2World forum we have people from around the world, with different cultures, personalities and also different OS/2 needs.

I just want to remember that there are several type of OS/2 users:
- The OS/2 user from the 80's and 90's that uses ArcaOS every day on real hardware and wants more hardware support.
- The OS/2 user that is fine running it on a Virtual Machine
- OS/2 users of industrial machinery only.
- The user that wants to run OS/2 as a hobbie on old hardware
- The new OS/2-ArcaOS user that is learning how to use it and maybe it compares how he does things on Linux/Windows.
- The eComStation users.
- People that have no idea about OS/2 and just installed it on a VM for curiousity.
....and there are several more combinations of OS/2 users.

Please remember to be open minded and kind. I always said that you don't have to reply everything you see.
If, for example, someone only wants to focus on VM, or old hardware, and that is not your interest, there is no need to get into that thread only to criticize his initial choice. Please be constructive.

Regards
