Mail-News / Re: PMMail: 2.00.xx to 3.22 migration...what to do?
« on: October 13, 2017, 08:40:38 pm »
Alright, so a quick update.

I did the following:

1) split up the contents of SENT folder into multiple child folders, that got me several with approx 1000-1500 msg each, a lot better than the single massive SENT folder

2) I re-indexed all the current folders, no errors found

3) I shut PMMail down, backed it up as both dir copy and ZIP

4) I installed the NEW application into a separate directory (so no overwrite over the old one) ...and....drumroll...here is where I ran into an issue...

During the install it appears that the new application process completed successfully. I do have the PMMail folder with all icons present. However, during the said install the Migrate tool was automatically kicked-off. I pointed it to the old PMMail install and told it to COPY stuff, do not delete the old one.

It is during this processing that I am getting an error message, see attachment for a screenshot of the error itself and some variable values in the inspection window.

Specifically, what I am wondering is whether the Migration tool crashes because it's attempting to copy a file which in the NEW install is currently 0 (zero) bytes. After all, it gave me an option to Migrate during the install, and as such I have not actually ran the new PMMail even once by this point in time.

The specific command that fails is: {"copy "'dst_dir'\Tools\group.db" "'dst_dir'\Tools\group.db.BAK" '}, where: dst_dir = G:\APPS\TCPIP\PMMail3\Accounts, and where the matching contents of that directory are:

Directory of G:\apps\tcpip\pmmail3\accounts\tools

10-13-17   2:10p     31118           0  addr.db
10-13-17   1:29p      3474           0  assoc.db
 3-26-17   5:35p       289           0  books.db
 2-08-11   8:19a        92           0  csetalii-default.db
10-13-17   1:36p         0         124  csetalii.db
10-05-98   2:00a       350           0  DirSvcs.db
 7-18-17   3:56p         0           0  GROUP.DB
        7 file(s)      35323 bytes used

Sooo....I have a half-baked install at the moment, and starting the NEW PMMail produces a good looking account structure, however, with zero messages. To be expected since the migration failed. I can certainly re-do all of this, however, one thought is troubling me: even in my old PMMail install that group.db file is 0 (zero) bytes as well.

Here are the matching entries for this directory in the old install:

Directory of G:\apps\tcpip\pmmail\tools

9-29-17   2:53p     31118           0  ADDR.DB
10-03-17  12:36p      1137           0  ASSOC.DB
 3-26-17   5:35p       289           0  BOOKS.DB
10-05-98   2:00a       350           0  DirSvcs.db
 7-18-17   3:56p         0           0  GROUP.DB
        5 file(s)      32894 bytes used

Given the date/time stamp of the group.db file present in the NEW directory it certianly appears that the Migration process successfully copies it over in the first place, but then fails later on as it attempts to create a backup???

What is stored in that file anyways???

EDIT
====
Also attached the migratePMM.log-20171013-14-58-17, which I believe is the Migration Tool log. Unfortunately I do not see the failure point in there, but that could be just due to a timing issue?

I will try to log a ticket for this issue...

Hi Doug!

Wow man, Thank You, that is a massive write-up and I appreciate ever single part of it.

Alright, let me focus on some key points as I need a little clarification.

...I would suggest that you think about reducing the number of messages in the primary folders (Inbox, Sent, and any that you filter messages to). I usually put old messages into sub folders, by year, or month, depending on the amount of activity. Sub folders of the Sent folder take on the characteristics of the Sent folder. You will get much better performance by doing that, and migration will probably be better too...

Are you suggesting that I put NEW child folders into the account specific default SENT parent folder? I thought of doing this before but I always assumed that it was a bad idea to mess with this folder. It certainly makes a lot of sense, and for starters I would be able to do a search in the SENT folders, which today causes my PMMail to simply crash.

...Okay, now that you have done some preparation, try it. It will ask for a new location, and basically copy all of your mail etc. to the new location (it is a new directory structure, and some files are modified to match), so be sure that you have enough space....

OK, so a specific issue I have is that I only have about 1.5Gig left on my application drive (also happens to be my boot drive, but that's the legacy of the original install I did). So the option I have is to move my current pmmail directory structure to a different drive, where I have a bunch of space, wipe it off of my boot drive and then do the WarpIn based install. Will the installer itself attempt to migrate the old PMMail stuff during the install, or is this a separate process one does later once the NEW PMMail install is completed?

The 2nd question is: does the migration tool/process simply need to find a disk directory structure of the old PMMail, or is it looking for some application specific install/config data?

Basically I am wondering if my plan to move the current install to the spare drive has a chance of working?

...Be especially careful with existing filters. Some fairly serious problems were fixed, and that means that some filters now actually do what they are supposed to do. A few people got caught using incorrect filter operation, which now doesn't do what it did before....

Alright, good point. The filters issue is that they are not complex, but rather I have a whole pile of them, so just a sheer volume. But OK, good to know, I had intended to review all of them one-by-one and possibly get rid of some of them to clean things up a tad.

Thanks again!

Dave,

Is the 52 build something that's coming relatively soon? If so, then yes, I agree. But based on what I see coming across the email list, it looks like a few issues have been identified already to get us there. So I'm a little more than worried that it'll be a longer time effort...

Mail-News / PMMail: 2.00.xx to 3.22 migration...what to do?
« on: October 13, 2017, 04:46:41 am »
Alright, as the subject says, are there any known "problem spots" and/or preferred steps in attempting this?

My current 2.00.1500 install is ages old...about 1.8 Gig in total disk space, 3 accounts, the big one (mine) about 10k msgs in the SENT folder alone). Lots of different built-in filters (SPAM and various folder sorting), some stuff in the address books, etc, etc.

Sooo...I do not have 3.22 installed yet, but it will be done through the WarpIn package. The current version was a ZIP based install, so if I understood what I had read about this so far I should not try installing OVER the current install. Not sure yet what the migration process is like, is it done during the install, or is this a separate process altogether?

I would appreciate any & all hints and suggestions you can make. My intent is to migrate as much of my current emailstore as possible.

Guys!

Wow...all of a sudden it got pretty hot in here...hmm...???

Look, it is fairly difficult to arrive at the same conclusions based on all what has been stated in this thread by simply looking at the PMMail Voice website instead (http://pmmail.os2voice.org/index.php?title=PMMail_for_OS/2). So to all of you who provided the behind-the-scenes background, thank you, I get it and while I still wish that we simply had a software product license to purchase instead, I understand why it is being done that particular way today.

I contribute to products and have in the past made sponsorship donations...so I'm no stranger to this and quite frankly am happy to do so. Case in point, $50 USD donation was made to VOICE today, I am supposed to be getting my PMMail 3.22 license key tomorrow...and to make that upgrade from 2.00.1500 to 3.22 a reality I will start a separate thread in this group and seek your advice regarding the specifics.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB questions
« on: October 12, 2017, 10:17:59 pm »
Hi Ivan,

...As a side note all my computers have AMD processors from 2 to 4 cores but I'm building one with a Ryzen 8 core processor for a friend that is into gaming and will test ArcaOS on it before I hand it over.

I hope you will post the details of your experience there.

I have an older AMD Phenom II X6 machine here (MSI motherboard) that while supporting pretty much everything (sound, USB, etc) is starting to show it's age. In particular I have been thinking of making the move to Ryzen CPU next (boy, that's actually a skip of at least a couple of CPU generations...LOL) but I'm very hesitant since too many things are no longer structured to work with our platform.

...I was just a little bit amazed that the issue was closed so quick! My Intention was not to complain but rather ask other people who experienced the same problems to contribute too. Darius and Neil seem to have similar problems...

I updated the ticket you opened with some of the stats details the other day and with some additional info today regarding for when the video stops.

So here is what I found out, at times there'll be a very brief, maybe a second or two at most, playtime which then stops. I think the 'Network Activity' indicator in the YouTube stats box shows 0kB in such instances and indicates that there is no video playback occuring. Whether the video stops b/c the YouTube server thinks there is a problem first, or whether the problem occurs first and subsequently the server reports back on it is hard to tell.

I will try a safe-mode session next though.

Hey Doug!

...Paid? For what? You paid for version 2.x, which was owned by somebody else. VOICE bought the rights, so they have the right to charge a fee for their work on version 3.x. PMMail is actually a bonus for being a member of VOICE, nothing more...

Oh, I'm afraid you missunderstood what I wrote.

I do not have a problem paying for a product...no sir, happy to pay for my 3.x PMMail upgrade. What I do not understand is this requirement to purchase a VOICE membership and then pay once again for the product. If I have no desire to be a VOICE member then why am I being forced to pay for it?

It really is THAT simple...nothing more to it...let me pay for the product I purchase, that's all I'm asking.

Mail-News / PMMail 3.22 and SMTP authentication...can it do that?
« on: October 11, 2017, 06:16:35 pm »
I have an absolutely ancient version of PMMail here, lol, 2.00.1500, but it's been working fine for years now and with all my written SPAM and email filters I just never felt like I needed to upgrade.

Well....that time has apparently come. I just moved from a DSL to Fibre ISP provider. I want to preserve access to my DSL email account (which the DSL provider is happy to do for me) but now that I am no longer on their domain I need an email client that does SMTP authentication. My current version does NOT. It simply accepts the SMTP server name and port number, but nothing beyond that. It does have the option to do POP, but my email provider does not.

Sooo....that implies I need to find a new email client. I would prefer to stay with PMMail, although the current license deal seems a tad strange...sorry, VOICE membership required first? Why do I need to do this given that I am already paying (or have paid) other license costs (either specific applications, or stuff like AN, etc, etc...but that's a different conversation altogether).

The other option I have is to try the Mozilla/Seamonkey/Thunderbird thing.

Back to the PMMail question then: can someone confirm that the outbound SMTP email option provides authentication?

Thanks!

Hi Holger,

...I opened a ticket, but it was closed quite soon by dimik.

https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/issues/242
Perhaps someone would like to contribute too?
...

Yeah, I read that...bugger, not sure why dmik closed it so soon, I really did not think much was done to research. I did update the ticket with my details of what I saw, including a screenshot of the YouTube stats page overlaid on the video presentation space, which is clearly showing that YouTube msg...hopefully they re-consider.

Hi Holger,

Hmm...come to think of it that is precisely what I'm seeing here as well. Certainly not the behaviour that we saw in the latest pre-release either...so something went wrong in the GA build.

If you are going to log a ticket I will hold off and contribute once it's there instead.

Thanks,

Applications / Re: XWorkplace and missing folder contents...
« on: October 09, 2017, 07:43:03 pm »
Hi Rich!

...Like much of XWP, It uses a mutex semaphore to protect some data that other threads modify. While this is perfectly OK, it's willing to wait indefinitely for its sem to become available. While I don't think the problem lies on this thread, it's easy to see how these indefinite waits could lead to a deadlock. Both threads A and B need to own semaphores X and Y to proceed. A holds one while B holds the other, so both wait forever for a semaphore the other will never release. If one of those threads handles populating folders, the WPS will grind to a halt. Where this is happening - if that's actually what's happening - remains a mystery...

Is this something we could try to capture? This is such a painful issue for me that I'd be more than happy to run various debug type stuff here. Also, since I have a couple of machines handy I can certainly attempt to do som more in-depth debugging, such as maybe even getting the ICAT debugger setup for this?

...BTW1... Have you ever tried disabling XWP to confirm that it really is the problem? It's easy: unlock 'xfldr.dll', rename it, then restart the Desktop. Don't rely on XWP to disable itself - this is the only method short of uninstalling that is guaranteed to do so.

BTW2... I'd still like to know what filesystems you load...

No, this I have not tried, but OK, great point, I will setup a test run to give this a go.

Ahh...filesystem...sorry, so "deep in the bowls of the beast" that it really snuck past me as well. I am exclusively running the HPFS386 setup here on local disks. 64 MB cache. Beyond that I have NetDrive active to connect to my Win and single NAS box, they use NTFS and EXT4 respectively. I am also booting with FAT32 but that only is used for my DSLR (digital camera).

OK, so hang on a sec...you unzipped the *.7z file into your \usr\xxx directory structure? Normally this is where the actual RPM installer (either ANPM or YUM) would toss things into...you can certainly put things there manually, but I think that is not a good idea. I prefer to let RPM deal with it's own stuff and I deal with my own by keeping the locations separate.

...and where did you put the \usr\lib\firefox... stuff? This is where the XUL.DLL exists and if you manually unzipped this over your RPM \usr\xxx directory structure then most likely firefox.exe is not finding it since that location is not in your LIBPATH.

Only a guess here, but if you install FF from the official RPM package (once it becomes available) the intent is for the XUL.DLL to go into \usr\lib. I do NOT know this for a fact, but on my system here all the RPM DLLs pretty much end up here, therefore I have no reason to believe this would be any different with FF RPM package.

Ian and Remy,

Guys, another update...I thought I would max out the settings with the goal of achieving highest performance...then if I start running into problems I would dial things back a step at a time.

So here are my current applicable INETCFG.INI settings:

#Inetcfg:       CURRENT DEFAULT MINIMUM MAXIMUM

keepalive       300     300     0       7800    KeepAlive (sec)
tcpswinsize     246723  32768   1024    246723  TCP SendWindow Size
tcprwinsize     246723  32768   1024    246723  TCP RecvWindow Size
udpswinsize     246723  41600   1024    246723  UDP SendWindow Size
udprwinsize     246723  41600   1024    246723  UDP RecvWindow Size
lingertime      120     120     0       65535   Linger Time (sec)
ipforward       0       0       0       1       IP Forwarding flag ON/OFF
timestmp        0       0       0       1       TCP TimeStamps ON/OFF
msl             30      30      1       16384   TCP MaxSegLifeTime (sec)
sack            1       0       0       1       Selective ACK ON/OFF

...the xxxwindsize have been set to MAX values.

I still need to research a bit to understand the impact of the following:

lingertime
ipforward
timestamp (I think this may be used by SACK, not sure though)
msl

....and drummroll for the results please!!!  ;D

1) http://speedsmart.net/ => 87 Mb/s
2) http://testmy.net => 40 Mb/s
3) http://beta.speedtest.net => 91 Mb/s
4) FF download => 5000 KB/s, so roughly sustained 50 Mb/s

All in all, I would say that is basically what I'm seeing on my Winx boxes.

Can you show your directory structure for where you installed FF? XUL.DLL is right in the main directory alongside FF.EXE...so how do you have your LIBPATH set?
