General Discussion / OS/2 Books and OpenLibrary
« on: April 08, 2016, 05:15:46 pm »
Hi

Without trying to set a high expectative I think it will be nice to help a little bit on the OpenLibrary.org with the OS/2 books.

Some of the things that I found nice about it:
1) It is a part of the Internet Archive, which is a Public Library.
2) All changes there are Public Domain.
3) Internet Archive is not a corporation, it is a non-profit organization that is not goverment funded.

Check the books on the library I think it can be usefull to:
1) Help fix any missing information on the books (ISBN #, Tittle, Author name, etc) comparing it to the original book or other sources.
2) Help adding book covers
3) Adding tags so it can be easily related to OS/2. I found that some OS/2 books has this tags;
"OS/2 (Computer file), Operating systems (Computers)"
4) Donate OS/2 books to the "Internet Archive Book Drive". We don't know for sure when those are going to be scanned, but it is good they can have one copy to preserve it.

So, creating an account there is easy, editting the books information it is also very easy once you are logged. I think it can be fun to help there and also help preserve OS/2 knowledge.

What do you think? Remember that if does not applies to you or you don't want to help you don't need to reply.

Marketplace / Re: wanted: "Thinking Person's Guide to OS/2 2.1"

Hi Richard.

Even finding the cover was hard :)
https://openlibrary.org/works/OL3932488W/Thinking_Person's_Guide_to_OS_2_2.1

If you ever got this book please consider adding more information about it on the OpenLibrary.org. You can edit the information of each OS/2 book if you register (free) on that place.

Events / Re: Warpstock Europe 2016 - actual topics
« on: April 05, 2016, 02:40:00 pm »
Hi

This are good topics to discuss for people that like brainstorming and get inspired by different ways of thinking.
I would love to see a topic like:
* What you think should be the long term future for the platform?

It can be great if at Warpstock (both) can be set an open table with some panelist to discuss this subjects with their opinions. Is it call "Open Panel" on english? or is it just "Panel Discussion"?

Setup & Installation / Re: using yum
« on: April 04, 2016, 03:44:39 pm »
Hi Neil.

I agree with you that you cannot rely on the return code. I used to got errors that said that the package did not get installed and at the end it got installed on some installation.

But the good part on my side is that it still works and do it has to do even if the error message says anything.

Note: Since I always forget the YUM commands I created a "note to myself here".

Hi

Just to try it out I recently installed the eCO Runtime (just check if you are using the last one) and tried the eCo Market.

It seems to be working fine from here.

General Discussion / Re: Exodus OS/3

Hi Rick

My only advice (based on my limited knowledge) to you is to try grab as much as possible of open source code that we have available for other attempts to clone the platform. Like I told you on the other post there are several other projects that can be recycled to allow you to save some time. Just check that the open source license of those projects are compatible with what you are trying to do.

Like I told you before my interest it is for projects that are compatible with OS/2, for something this is the OS2World community :)

Good luck with this project. I think that if it shows some progress and benefit for the OS/2 community some other people will join to help.

General Discussion / Re: Contacting Jonathan de Boyne Pollard

Hi

I haven't been able to contact him, my last try was on 2014. I have interest on asking to turn his software open source and get permission to republish his articles on the OS2World.com Wiki.
Please check the forums personal message I sent you.

Hi

I just tried it out. I replaced PNP.SYS and ISAPNP.SNP with your file and cWarp keeps booting fine on the Virtual Machine.

Thanks a lot.

Wow, thanks a lot.

Is it the same file (isapnp.sys and pnp.sys) that just need to be renamed?

I will be trying it.

Thanks.

Hi

I was just reading this news at Slashdot.
https://linux.slashdot.org/story/16/03/30/1021224/confirmed-microsoft-and-canonical-partner-to-bring-ubuntu-to-windows-10

Poiting to this Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols article:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-and-canonical-partner-to-bring-ubuntu-to-windows-10/

Sure, it is nothing technically amazing, it is like running Linux over Windows like we have Win16 on OS/2. Or will it be something different? But it shows something strange with Microsoft behaviour as we used to know them.

Will it be the "Embrace, extend and extinguish" strategy all over again? or will this mark the end of Window as we know it?

It is kind of fun to speculate on this subject.

Hi, thanks to all.

I think that putting a site like OS2World is easy, what it really make this community awesome is the people that visit it and collaborates everyday.

Some guy told me "...at the end of all this community is only about software". I think diferent, "it is about people".

Thanks Wim.

I just replaced it on the cWarp experiment and it didn't break anything.
The only change that I noticed is that the fonts looks different on the messages when it boots, but "different good".

Hi Wim

Thank you very much. I will be trying it on my experiment.

Just one thing to confirm, are the .rom of your files the fonts?

Thanks to everyone that keep visiting this site.

Any feedback about OS2World is always welcome.

Martin - if you get this magazine perhaps you might share a review?

If I get it I will acknowledge that it exists but since it is development related I'm not sure I can write a decent review about it.
Maybe the "1   Preparing a Minimalistic Software Development Environment for OS/2" article will be something I can follow.
