Title: List of OS/2 Tested/Reported Motherboards
Post by: Martin Iturbide on May 02, 2020, 05:27:42 pm
Hi

I had updated the list of the OS/2 tested mainboards. Also including the ones that the OS4 kernel team tested.

You can visit it here: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Motherboards (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Motherboards)

I'm always looking for new motherbaords to include, if you want to include them just post it here, you can also provide the pci.exe and lsusb reports to be able to poinpoint each component.

If the list grows I will be thinking on splitting the list on "post 2010" and "older" on a different list.

Regards

Hi Martin,

You can add    MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition   (e.g. I use it with a I7 5775c)
https://fr.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z97S-SLI-Krait-Edition.html#down-manual
Video works
Audio work
Network works
USB works
On board M.2  (using PCI express)

regards
Rémy

Thank you Rémy.
I had include it to the list and created a page for it.
If you can provide me the pci.exe and lsusb report (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Extracting_Hardware_Information_from_ArcaOS_and_OS/2) it would be great to pinpoint each component.

Hi Martin,

Please add the following hardware config to your list:

1) MOTHERBOARD - MSI 880G-E45 (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/880GE45/Specification (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/880GE45/Specification))
- CHIPSET: AMD® 880G+SB710
- STORAGE: SATA II, IDE & AHCI, AHCI supported with OS2AHCI v2.07, but runs slower than IDE with DANIS506
- AUDIO: Realtek® ALC888S/ACL889, works fine with UniAud (32-bit: 2.02.04, 16-bit: 1.09.7)
- NIC: Realtek PCI-E GbLAN controller RTL8111DL, works fine with both latest MMRE (1.01.3) as well as the last R8169 (1.00.2) specific drivers
- MEMORY: 8G total, 4G for OS/2 system use (3.3 recognized), 4G Ramdisk
- USB: 2.0 only hardware, no problems

2) CPU - AMD Phenom II X6, M3
- MB supports both MPTS 1.1 and 1.4, running in 1.4 mode
- WPS will not boot up in 6-core config, stuck at WPS BlueScree, therefore running in 5-core only SMP mode, no issues though

3)  VIDEO - ATI X850XT PE, 256M, PCI-E
- SNAP drivers correctly recognize and accelerate the video
- running in dual-head config, 2 x 1920x1200 mode

I've attached the output of my PCI run.

Thanks Rémy.

I had updated the page: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/MSI_Z97S_SLI_Krait_Edition#Devices

Just some questions

1) Audio: It seems you two audio devices on the mainboard:
Intel Broadwell-U Audio Controller    8086:160C
and
Intel 9 Series Chipset Family HD Audio Controller    8086:8CA0

Which ones runs with Uniaud? Both? Any special config.sys or startup.cmd command to make it work?

2) Network: Which driver (xxx.os2) file do you use to make the "Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller    10EC:8168" work?

3) Video: Are you using SNAP or Panorama for video driver on this board?

Hi

I think I'm going to create another thread for people that want to report their laptops.

If someone else want to report another mainboard please post it here.

Hi Martin

Your list seems to be missing Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 rev 4.0 which, with the exception of USB3 and eSATA support, works well.  Yes I can use the eSATA as a "regular" SATA controller by connecting an eSATA disk prior to booting; the disk is then treated as a SATA disk - not removeable.

Mainboard webpage may be of interest https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard/GA-990FXA-UD3-rev-40#ov

Have attached pci output as 990FXA-UD3_pci_list.txt

Not sure what lsusb is but I don't have that... all relevant usb info should be in the pci report.

Pete

Thanks Pete.

I just included it: https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Gigabyte_990FXA-UD3_rev_4.0 (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Gigabyte_990FXA-UD3_rev_4.0)

Just some questions:
1) Which processor are you using on it.
2) I see on the report that it has to two SATA Controllers:
 - AMD/ATI SB7x0/SB8x0/SB9x0 SATA Controller [AHCI mode]    1002:4391
 - Marvell 88SE9172 SATA 6Gb/s Controller    1B4B:9172
I don't have any idea how this works. Does it means one chipset has some SATA ports and the other chipset other ports? Does both works?
3) I saw a similar hardware that with SNAP you can have dual monitors. Have you tried that ?
4) Are you using the MMRE.OS2 driver for the network?
5) Any special trick for the Audio? config.sys change? unimix.exe?

I use lsusb (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ef45b19aqrc6c95/lsusb-20130526.zip?dl=0) (with usb.ids (http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids))  to extract any USB  devices attached on the bus, since PCI.exe does not show that. It is more common on laptops to have usb devices attached internally, not that common on motherboards, but it can happen.

Thanks

I'm curious, have you had a chance to try out AHCI support?

I ask b/c I'm currently fishing for the MSI 890FXA-G65 (SATA III capability) and any other board that allows me to run my AM3 CPU and works on the OS/2 platform is interesting.

Hi Dariusz,

Be glad you aren't in France, one of our largest computer parts supplier now only lists AM4 boards and Ryzen processors as well as their very expensive Intel offerings.

It might be time for you to consider moving up in the AMD world.  I seem to remember that you said your son has a Ryzen based machine - if so there is a simple test you can do - make a disk image of your working system, copy it to another disk then borrow the Ryzen box and swop its HD for your copy - power up and see what happens (you might need to edit the config.sys on the copy and add the odd driver.  That is how I went from my 3850 Sempron APU Mini ITX board to my Ryzen 3 2200G unit, in fact I still have the modified HD and use it to test how well ArcaOS runs on some of the Ryzen units I build for friends and other people.

Hi Martin

Processor: AMD FX-4300

SATA controller is the AMD/ATI, the Marvell has only 2 external eSATA ports. Yes, both work "Yes I can use the eSATA as a "regular" SATA controller by connecting an eSATA disk prior to booting; the disk is then treated as a SATA disk - not removeable."

Not tried dual monitors , currently no ambitions in that direction  :-)

Yes to the MMRE.OS2 driver question.

No tricks required to get audio working - even with Pauls linux 3.2 port from this discussion https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?topic=2436

I do have 1 usb device attached internally, an EVO Labs Internal Multi Card Reader pci 0x048D:0x1336 - the only problem with internal card readers is that it is necessary to manually Refresh Drives in order to get a card recognised after it is inserted.

Regards

Pete

Hi Dariusz

AHCI support works fine - the older eCS/AN  V1.32 driver does not have problems initialising ports whereas the later AN V2.0? drivers seem to have initial problems. However the V2.0? driver does work without problems.

This board uses the AMD990FX/SB950 chipsets, everything works barring USB3 - not the fault of the mainboard  :-)
So, probably worth considering; you may even find a reasonable priced "preowned" board on ebay/amazon.

Good hunting  :-)

Actually, I do intend to test that box out eventually, however, for the time being I am waiting for AOS to release a UEFI capable USB stick boot since that AMD box does not have a DVD reader. Otherwise, the only way to do this is by doing what you describe and I really can't afford to take a chance that anything might impact that box (dreaded disk mix-up, etc.). My son is using that right now to finish up a bunch of his school projects so from that perspective it's what I consider to be a "production box" status.

Hi

I forgot Doug's "Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_M5A78L-M/USB3)", now it is included on the list (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Motherboards).

I'd be curious to see in the hardware listings an entry to say "This is available to buy new." vs. "This is of historical interest."

Once a xHCI driver is available, I'd think a few new motherboards would be available.

I agree.

Once a xHCI driver is available, I'd think a few new motherboards would be available.
Unfortunately the available amount of RAM for ArcaLoader/qsinit decreases. I would also like to have that info added. (I have here 2 GB, while I count 2.5 GB as the minimum. That's the reason why I don't recommend this MB. Simply getting Martin to add this one, would probably lead to some disappointed people. My MB is from 2017.)

Since the try with the MB above failed for me, I'm very interested in a new Ryzen board. But is should make enough RAM available.

Hi Andreas,

On my running system I get

[C:\]mem
7,906 MB  (3,311 MB accessible to system)

but I do notice that there appears to be a different layout for memory compared to Intel boards.

Hi Neil

I was thinking to separate the list of mainboards from 2010 to 2020 and the rest put it on a "List of Motherboards (Archive)" page, but I wanted the list to grow a little bit more.
I also think that  putting the release year on the list will give an idea if it something that can be found new or historical.

Hi Martin,

I think the 'new' boards should be no more than 2 years old - since 2018 there has been a vast change in AMD based boards with the older ones dropping by the wayside rather rapidly.  Here it is almost impossible to get an AMD based board that is more than 2 years old unless you can find one at one of the discount stores or eBay.

Your reported MB is not available anymore.

According to Guzzi's report about an AM4 board with a recent chipset (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Gigabyte_B450M_S2H) (1.5 GB only (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,2398.msg25778.html#msg25778)), I don't feel to just buy a new one. (Here I have 2 GB with an FM2+ MB.)

Are we now forced to use Intel CPUs? How is the RAM situation on MBs for Intel CPUs? Can anyone recommend a recent type?

Hi

I had moved to an archive list the older than 2015 motherboards.
https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Motherboards (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/List_of_Motherboards)

If I get more more motherboard reports I will be moving 2015 to the archive. It feels so sad to have a short list  :'(
