Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS Sluggishness
« on: October 13, 2023, 05:39:14 am »
I happen to have two ArcaOS 5.1 partitions booting under UEFI on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M900. One has a 2 GB HPFS ArcaOS boot drive and a 10 GB JFS Programs, Home and Unixroot drive.

The HPFS drive boots in 24.4 seconds, while the JFS drive boots in 25.2 seconds. You will need a stopwatch to see the difference.

Tried, but couldn't get it to come up on Dooble or Firefox in Arca 5.1.  My internet is a bit flakey under Arca, so I'll try Windows (UGH.)

There must be something better than PayPal buttons for our set of browsers.

I used "Install Printer" to install what it called a Cups printer. It seems to work.

Can you explain what isn't working? I've always found cups a little bit confusing.

AcpiTree is a sample program from the ACPI toolkit, which is distributed with ACPI, but not installed by default.

Applications / Drag and drop printing

So, if I have a group of Lotus WordPro files selected, and I drag them to a printer, they print. But they don't seem to print in the order they were in the folder.

If a group of files are dropped on a printer, what determines the order in which the files will print?

Hello

What is the solution for a laptop without ethernet port to get the wireless working?
- USB to ethernet first and later one of this routers or "Ethernet to Wifi" adapter?

Regards

If you have USB 12.14 installed, have a look at the USBASIX network driver. It seems to support a lot of modern USB to ethernet adapters, including many that are sold as "Docks".

Applications / Re: Installing VisualAge C++ 3.0 on ArcaOS 5.1.0

I have had a reliable VAC 3.0 installation procedure as a part of Suntan Special. It works great on ArcaOS 5.1. It follows all of Lars' recommendations. I use the unattended installation with a response file.

When Innotek first released GCC for OS/2, I compared the C++ of all the available compilers. Early GCC could compile all the examples in "Advanced C++". No other OS/2 compiler could do that. VAC 3.6.5 was not significantly better than VAC 3.0.

On the other, hand, the only way to also have Windows 10, Linux and MacOS (!) on the T480, was to install a second flash drive just to have ArcaOS on it and have my boot manager reboot through the BIOS to have boot the MBR disk.

What boot manager do you use? It would be nice to mix UEFI and non-UEFI disks on a system.

When I try to get the dooble at ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/rpm/, I get password required.

ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/rpm/

Is there something wrong with link above?

How would you install the new dooble build?

It sounds like it requires QT6. Does the VOICE repository have QT6? Are any .exp repositories needed?

General Discussion / Re: Firefox or Dooble for the OS2World Forum
« on: August 30, 2023, 03:22:56 pm »
I like browsing OS/2 World with Firefox 45.

Dooble is too light on features to be a comfortable browser. Last November at Warpstock we talked about needing bookmarks and saved passwords as the basic features that a browser should have. Filling out forms automatically is nice, but not really needed.

Has anyone done the upgrade option for the install to 5.1?  I did a fresh install went perfectly however I would like to upgrade the machine that I use Arca on, and hoping not to have to redo the whole drive?

You can upgrade a 5.0 installation to 5.1. The disk will still be MBR. Nothing will change except the volume you upgraded. If you want to change MBR to GPT, then you'll wipe the entire drive.

I didn't test one, but there are products that backup /wipe drive /format GPT /restore. I doubt they play nice with OS/2.

I recommend checking on the Arca Noae website to see if ArcaOS 5.1 has been released.

I can make SmartCVS run, but it won't do anything without a license. It used to work. I think they must have changed things on the server.

Code: [Select]
@echo off
rem OS/2 script for SmartCVS, requires JAVA installed

set JAVA_EXE=%1
set SMARTCVS_HOME=..
set SMARTCVS_LIB=%SMARTCVS_HOME%\lib
set SMARTCVS_MAIN_JAR=%SMARTCVS_LIB%\smartCVS.jar

%JAVA_EXE% -jar %SMARTCVS_MAIN_JAR% %2
