OS/2 pointers and pointer sets
----
-
XWP shadow icons and boot logos
-
Styer (estyler) titlebar and button bitmaps
-
A few desktop and folder backgrounds done in PNG's. ArcaOS has no problem utilizing PNGs as desktop backgrounds. I decided to do PNGs because for some reason, my ArcaOS was getting confused when using OS/2 bmps. This does not exist when using PNGs.
---
-
Some desktop and folder backgrounds.
---
-
I am moving my portal folders here so they are easier to find. To use, dynamic icons must be enable for each folder you want to use them in, including the desktop. Remember, XWP's shadow icon does not work when dynamic icons are enabled for that folder. Thes PNG folder icons can only be used if you have ArcaOS. You can use them how you want. You can have a blue folder icon and when open it can be a empty blue bubble or you can use a clear port icon and so on. I started some yellow portals. Now I just have to find them.
The first set is the blue portal folders.
---
-
Clear portal folder icons
a yellow portal folder set. Not complete,
---
-
Created some new "glass" Styler tbkgnds and buttons. Be sure to check the "scale the image" under the titlebar tab in the styler setup.
-
Doodling and made a glass blue desktop background and a glass red background and a pink for the ladies.
---
-
I had these posted, but waited until I had enough in the package to anounce this package. These are brand new icons. These are not found in the other package.
---
-
I am messing with a new glass prototype folder. Uploaded are the templates.
Also uploaded 7 test icons.
---
-
New red glass folder icons
---
-
new dark blue glass folder icons
---
-
new yellow glass folder icons
---
-
I cleaned up the original glass blue folders template.
I also added more icons to match what i had in the red, yellow, and dark blue glass folders.
---
-
Somehow I left this out of my xwp shadow icon package.
Another butterfly, possibly the best of the three.
By the way, anything I upload, feel free to use anyway one wants, to modify, or add to. As I have stated before, this is stuff I play around with which is why I refer to it as doodles.
David
---
-
I did the grey folders since grey is a neutral color.
---
-
More doodling with folder concept.
---
-
I liked the yellow glass folders the best so far so I made more folder icons .
I also made a few more doc icons based on my glass idea.
I also modified the drawing pencil pointers to a more yellow look for my theme.
Also included a picture of my present desktop.

Hello david,
I wanted to ask you if you have the warp3 or warp4 icons of the magnifying glass,
that we have in the xcenter, and that the xwpfinder program uses. It's for tests
I was trying to change this icon the other day, and it seemed that after changing it,
I increased the memory of the system. At about 200,000 to 400,000Kb
It seems to me that this increase in memory is due to the fact that when the icon is changed,
the desktop is reset.
If someone wants to verify it, for me it is a sensation. You just have to "Restart Desktop".
The pmshell.exe appears with a new pid and you're done.
Remember to have a backup, because when you restart the desktop,
if you have the defective inis it can be a kaos.

Hi Roberto
I do not have the magnifying glass or any of the other icons. The source files can be found at Netlabs if this helps.

Thanks for the link, I think I'll open a tiket with the error in xwpfinder, in mantis.
Concerning my previous comment of the memory, it turns out that according to theseus4,
it is exactly the opposite, to what I have observed. Doing the desktop restart,
I consume 350,000kb more than without doing it.
I can only say that if someone wants to try it, and compare it, it's simple.
I already start the system, I do the restart desktop. It works better especially with applications like the virtualbox,
which are some memory swallows.
The explanation, I do not know, could be from an error in theseus4, to a better use of the cache ...

David, if you write a little application and use gray-scaled versions and identify mask templates for your base gray-scaled images, you can apply user-specified colors allowing them to generate their own custom preferences to generate an output icon set based on those preferences.
Put together a few base color group patterns for common likes and people can use those as a base for tweaking and creating their own custom entries.
If you're interested in something like that and you have some base OS/2 Presentation Manager programming skills, I would be happy to help you setup a template app and give you some cues on the algorithms where required.

Hi Rick
I appreciate the offer, but you have enough on your plate to handle. Unfortunately, I am not a programmer. I thought about it at one time may years ago, but realized without help, I would never be good. In addition to lack of knowledge and skill, I am a poor typist. That is why I started dabbing with icons, ptrs, and bmps. I have had to teach myself over time. Fortunately, no typing was involved. It is just my way of contributing back to the OS/2 community.
Best of luck on the goals you hope to achieve.
-

I can only work on any given project for a few days at a time then I need a switch. I enjoy tackling new things. On this project I would've mostly guided you and written some template code that you could expand upon.
Best of luck on the goals you hope to achieve.
Thank you kind sir.

A few new icons and the jade portal folders. For the open folder, you can do it in six ways:
1. Don' assign an open folder
2. Assign the yellow folder for open
3 Assign an empty jade folder
4. Assign an empty yellow folder
5. Assign an empty ring for the open folder
6. Assign a ring with a brown interior
I named some of the open folder choices gateways.

Nearly completed a new blue portal theme. My present desktop with with a few of its icons.

I have uploaded the new blue folder portals as seen in the previous picture

Just updated my jade, blue, and brown portal folders adding more folder icons. Removed the earlier zips. Pics of what some of the icons look like can be found on page 2 near the bottom.
Remember, there are various ways to handle the second icon. It is up to your imagination.
1. Don' assign an open folder
2. Assign the brown folder for open
3 Assign an empty jade folder
4. Assign an empty brown folder
5. Assign an empty ring for the open folder
6. Assign a ring with a brown interior
7. etc

My first animated arrow pointer. It is a highly visible 32x32 animated ballon ptr. It changes colors.
Just unzip and copy the folder to the os/2 pointers folder. Open the mouse icon and select the arrow pointer. Then select load set and select the folder with the icons.
Just added a new animated shuttle ptr.
Added a ani charged pointer.

Hi David.
Just in case I had been looking around for some icons and "Icon Park (http://icon-park.com)" has some very nice ones and public domain. Maybe you already know about it.

Hi Martin
I was not aware of it. Since ArcaOS has PNG capability, the more to choose from the better. Thanks.

Hi David.
By any chance have you created any improved version of the "System Setup Icons" (like the ones that I'm attaching) that looks more similar to the original, but optimized and with a higher resolution?
I would really like to have some SVG format of a nicer version of the "plain system setup" icon, so the rest icons can be improved and maintain the old fashion way that I like, I kind of like those icons. It is a thing of a personal preference, don't believe I want to force people to the same taste ;D

Martin
Are you saying is it possible to make PNG icons similar to the pics? Yes.
However, if I did so, I might try to upgrade the graphics inside the control icon.
I will play around and see.

-
Hi David.
Those looks very good. Thanks.
I was wondering if you have it on SVG (vector format) or just work with those in PNG? I know that the final file must be on PNG to work, but SVG is good since it can be any size without loosing image quality.
Regards
-
Hi Martin. We don't seem to have any SVG support. I ported Potrace, http://potrace.sourceforge.net/ (http://potrace.sourceforge.net/) and played a bit.
Problems include no colour support but according to the web site, can layer. These PNG's don't translate to well to BMP or PBM due to having OBJECTS and/or LAYERS.
I used Embellish to convert the PNG's, some to PBM some to BMP, which I ran through mkbitmap to convert to PBM, test3 I also converted to greyscale.
The potential is there, need to play a bit. For help, run the help output through less as there is a line ending issue, potrace --help | less
I'll probably upload the full program to Hobbes after more testing.
Edit, the SVG's don't seem to display here for some reason. I tested by drag'n'dropping them on the browser (SeaMonkey)

To date, I have just dealt with os/2 icons, BMPs, and PNGs. I have never tried SVG.
-
Hi David.
That's good, I just wanted to know. SVG is not an icon format and will not work as icons on OS/2, but it is an interesting format since it is vector, so it is like having the source code of the image. Since a PNG, ICO, BMP are Bitmaps files, they have a defined size, while vectors images can be grown to any size you need without loosing quality.
I use Inkscape (sadly not on OS/2) to create/modify some images like Artie (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Artie) on SVG format, and I can plat around with it to export to several other formats.

Very Nice, I'm using those.
Here you can see the difference with some "old ones".

Updated some, created a few more, and bundled them all together.

Some new PNGs.

I uploaded the wrong Ghostview. I like the dark red glasses in the OS/2 icon. I have been playing around with Priority Master II demo, so I decided to create a PNG for it. Decided to make a new FM/2 PNG.

Created a few more PNGs. Touched up FM/2, did a 3d launchpad, Top, Larson Commander, DOS box with red outline, System Info 2, SysInfo.

Added a few more PNG icons to reply #50 and here.

Hi David.
By any chance have you produced any icons for any OS/2 game you may use/know?
Let me know if you have some icons for OS/2 games. I want to include some newer icons on my experiment called "OHFOWG (https://archive.org/details/OHFOWG)", where I'm trying to pack all OS/2 freeware/open/shareware games that I can find.
Regards
-
Are you referring to OS/2 icons or PNGs? As of right now, I have done no OS/2 icons for games. I prefer working with PNGs because the normal OS/2 icons are a pain in the ass to make and ArcaOS gives me the ability to use them. However, that is not to say I won't make any.
-
Hi David.
I also prefer png also. Sometime when I say "icons" I don't mean the ".ico format", just the image that shows as a square on a program executable file ;D ;D

The rather detailed Des_chiffres.png of 27 april looks like a drowning light blue cartoon character, with 2 light blue feet. As if the game can be quite hard. I had to zoom to see what it actually was: numbers. I'll try to use the released, simple Galgje.png. If anything to stick to a generic border theme.
Not an *.ICO file request, but a doodle in text. KMP, K Movie Player: the Korean flag, positive or negative, as a 3-D film frame of a 3-D Movies folde'ishr-icon, with and without the folder (KMP folder, KMP drop target, KMP UI). IIRC the Korean flag also was a little bit too detailed to make that work, even if you did restrict yourself to a smallest size of 40x40.
I thought at one time there was a grid spacing feature, but I do not see it in ArcaOS.
Old question, younger answer: I'm not using ArcaOS, but you may have been talking about Extended Desktop and its setting (tabs of the settings of the desktop), NPSWPS, or OO.EXE or a Rexx script (with or without WPTOOLS.DLL to query existing icons) which tries to set icon positioning by using WPS setup strings like ICONGRIDSIZE or ICONPOS. BUILDVRX.CMD of Watcom VX-REXX includes an example of ICONPOS, but nowadays I'd set its default screen size to its largest known screen size of 1024x768 instead of an outdated 640x480. The screen size is used to calculate ICONPOS-values.

Will probably be be used in a next release soon, w/o credits. The previous one really came close to a triangle-shaped, overwhelmed or drowning cartoon character. Two light blue feet sticking out to the left, and the hole of (IIRC) of the 4 representing facial features.
BTW, w.r.t. Digger: the original *.BMP artwork of DIGMENU3.ZIP itself, including but not limited to its EAs, qualifiies as bloatware. By choice. The largest bitmap can be converted to 256 colors, by using e.g. PMView or NConvert. The 2 smaller, untested bitmap files to 4 or 16 colors (at the moment please disable Hufman when PMView is used to save those small bitmap files, to avoid already reported extremer bloatware or crashes). Saves about 0.7 MiB of disk space and backup/restore time. I haven´t tested the small ones, but the largest file still works with 8 instead of 24 bits per pixel. FWIW.
-
Hi All
Not sure if this thread should be "hijacked" to discuss the BMPs supplied with DIGMENU3.ZIP but as Andre has commented I guess I should respond...
I did consider converting images but decided as the images total <1Mb to leave them alone.
The images are not required at all in order for digmenu to run - just make the interface more fun - so can be deleted if disk space is really tight.
Alternatively a user can create their own BMP files to use, just need to make the new images the same size as existing BMPs and use the same names as the existing BMP files.

Pete

I reduced the colors and added a new digger.ico. The attached png shows what the icon looks like.

Hi David
Your Digger icon is not Digger, it is Nobbin.
Any chance of a good scanner icon preferably with a HP logo on? - I am sure you can do much better than my HPscan icon...

I took the digger from the included graphic in the digmenu3.zip.
As for the scanner icon, I see what I can do. No guarantees.
-
Hi David
There are several "characters" involved - see http://www.digger.org/
I would upload the digger.ico used by digmenu but os2world does not allow uploading .ICO or .BMP files...

Hi Pete
A scanner icon is a very difficult icon to do when making an os2 icon due to all the limitations of the os2 icon. I created one, not to happy with it, but I don't think I could do much better. Others more skilled could probably make one better.
-
Hi David
Looks good to me - far better than I could manage.
I will use it with the next release of HPscan :-)
Thanks

This is not a request. It may be inspiration, to identify categories or "popular" apps without any *.ICO file. A quick & dirty list of objects without an assigned *.ICO file, excluding many folders with a default icon. Typically 3-D folder icons aren't that hard to create.
Missing icons may have been caused by an original author of a ported app without any original icon, not having assigned some generic icon to an object yet, or not yet having converted some available Windows-icon to an OS/2 *.ICO file. And so on.
From my point of view the most remarkable categories are the 1st (multimedia), 2nd (browser without an icon), mainly the 4th (graphics without *.ICO file), and the last 4 (a.o. FM/2 objects, brands of emulated hardware, utilities, iconless software for programmers).

Hi David.
I was checking your animated pointers (ecs_animated_cursors.zip, ecs_os2_ani_blinkinglights_ptrs.zip, ecs_os2_ani_flag_ptrs.zip, eCS_OS2_Ani_Mouse_Ptrs.zip, more_ecs_ani_mouse_ptrs.zip) on hobbes.
1) I was wondering how do you assign the icon (the ones that shows on the desktop) to the ani file. Some ani files shows the icon file, and some others not. Do you assign manually, and the EA is included on the zip file?
2) Will it make sense to combine those five packages (do you have any more?) in a single file in hobbes, and upload it to "/pub/multimedia/pointer/animated". I can help with that.

Hi Martin
It has been a while. Some are done the OS/2 way and some are done the Win95 way if I remember correctly. Presently, I don't have it installed. The latest supposedly corrected version of animated mouse pointer was dated 2010. I tried it with ArcoOS and it would hang my system every now and then. Also, it did not support the Win95 animated pointers which the original did. The fixed version has disappeared (2010). Now that I have 3 ArcaOS partitions up and running, I will have to try the original version again.
It has been so long that I really don't remember. The os/2 versions, you need to select the folder. The Win95, if I remember correctly, and I could wrong, should be shown in the pointer selections. I will need to install the original when I have time.
The only other animated pointers are the new ones I posted under this list. As for the ones on Hobbes, I never uploaded one big package with all the pointers. If you want to put them into one package, that is fine with me.
-
Hi David,
I'm reorganizing the pointers this way by consolidating the four zip files, it is still draft but this is the idea.

It was. A quick & dirty (2-D) redo confirms it'll look like JMP or like a Japanese ribbon. Too... many... details. :-\

PRIX3M80.PNG (renamed to Chiffres80.PNG) and GALGJE.PNG (renamed to Galgje80.PNG) are now distributed as the "official" 80x80 icons of the matching games Des chiffres and Galgje. Des chiffres had a different own 40x40 icon, but there the availability of a 80x80 version and a more generic 80x80 style was leading.

My PNG icon doodles in one package. Not all icons are pictured.
FWIW/ The PNG package contains 3 *.ICO files (QUESTER.ICO, QUESTER_80.ICO and a DOSBox-related TEST.ICO).

That is what happens when one has doodles scattered over several partitions and thumb drives. :)
-
I thought I had upload these OS/2 icons I had done over the years, but checking I had not. I included some pics of some of the folders, but not all the folders. These are primarily done in 8 and 24 bit icons. Again, there may be a few duplicate icons.
---
-
FWIW: here just about 37 duplicates, and missing dots in the file names "DOCUMENTS2ICO" and "INFO7ICO".
-
Grand Prix Circuit (https://www.myabandonware.com/game/grand-prix-circuit-ga) (GPEGA.EXE)
"Solved". There was an unexpected but recognizable 32x32 OS/2 icon file in its directory, which is slightly better than a default DOS session icon.
-
DataPerfect (DP.COM)
"Solved". https://dataperfect.nl/files (https://dataperfect.nl/files) has a 32x32 Windows icon file, which would probably look better as a 40x40 icon with a slightly larger text "DP", using the same italic blue font of WP5*.ICO OS/2 icon files.
The attached file is DP.ICO, converted to a 32x32 OS/2 icon. Apparently DataPerfect itself is freeware: https://winworldpc.com/product/dataperfect/2x (https://winworldpc.com/product/dataperfect/2x).

QVV (QVV.EXE)
"Solved". The attached icon files (QVV.ICO, QVV_80.PNG) are based on an original icon file of QVV (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/graphics/viewer&file=qvv402-os2.zip).

Squash (SQUASH.EXE)
"Solved". The attached icon file (Squash.ICO) is based on an original icon source file, resized by using ... Squash (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/graphics/convert&file=squash03-os2.zip).
For a 80x80 PNG icon, with David's border, I would recommend using the 64x64 icon source file. I haven't tried to upscale that original image to 80x80 myself: https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/squash/squash-0.3.tar.bz2 (https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/squash/squash-0.3.tar.bz2).

"Solved". The attached icon files (QVV.ICO, QVV_80.PNG) are based on an original icon file of QVV (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/graphics/viewer&file=qvv402-os2.zip).
Modified the 80_PNG.
-
Squash (SQUASH.EXE)
"Solved". The attached icon file (Squash.ICO) is based on an original icon source file, resized by using ... Squash (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/graphics/convert&file=squash03-os2.zip).
For a 80x80 PNG icon, with David's border, I would recommend using the 64x64 icon source file. I haven't tried to upscale that original image to 80x80 myself: https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/squash/squash-0.3.tar.bz2 (https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/squash/squash-0.3.tar.bz2).
A test version 80x80 PNG. For anyone wondering why I do 80x80 PNGs, this is the max size that ArcaOS renders.

JRemind (JREMIND.JAR)
Semi-"solved": 80x80 only, without the border, based on an original 128x128 source file. I'm not 100% sure if it's the icon of our version of JRemind (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/java/apps/misc&file=jremind10.zip), though. Too... many... details for 40x40.
-
I made 2 iconi. Due to the OS2 icon limitations, I modified one.
-
For a possibly better 80x80 one (too.. many ... details, even for 80x80), which shows the days of the calendar more clearly, I can refer to the original 128x128 icon source file. Hang on, I'll attach it (128x128, larger than 80x80 so NOT an icon for us). It was found in a JREMIND.JAR of a possibly different JRemind. The size suggests it's the icon; there was more artwork, including a 60x60 image.
Our JREMIND.JAR doesn't contain an icon file, AFAICT, and I couldn't find its possibly updated and/original source files.
I've played with the days while resizing to 40x40, and may give it a third try later today. Now even 80x80 is too small. Please note that it's an alternative to grab any rather clear 3D'ish calendar icon and an own J.
-
128x128 days-section copied, adjusted 128x128 image resized to 80x80, 128x128 days-section pasted on top of that 80x80 image.
This won't work with 40x40, because then the red bit would become too large to be able to almost recognize the days. Too... many... details.
And a "fun fact": none of my WPS-installed ported apps with "PNG" in the name of the app have an original PNG icon.
-
FWIW: the "About"-dialog of QVV shows both the credits of the assumed source of the image and the full image. The image "Green Woman", by Valentina Kallias (https://www.deviantart.com/valentinakallias). I've used the original icon file, so there won't be a need to repeat those credits and the permission. I've used the icon; not the original copyrighted image. Users of QVV may have it installed anyway.

Andre, all the PNGs look good! On the blank one, one could even add a J to it if one wanted to.

Made an icon of the Jremind empty with a J inside.

Artistic Style (ASTYLE.EXE)
"Solved". The attached file AStyle.ICO file is based on original, simple 32x32 and 16x16 icon files of Artistic Style (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/dev/c&file=astyle_fix.zip) (Automatic Indentation Filter for C , C++ , Java Source Codes). Sizes 40x40 and 20x20 share the same images, but with a transparent border.
-
Updated my icon pack. Found a bunch more drive, start/stop, program, misc, and DFSee icons to add to the package. I also included all the new icons I have done.

QBrows (QBROWS.EXE)
Omega (OMEGA.EXE)
"Solved". OS/2 icon file for QBrows (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/internet/www/browser&file=qbrows10-os2.zip), based on original source file LOADED.PNG.

"Solved". OS/2 icon file for QBrows (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/internet/www/browser&file=qbrows10-os2.zip), based on original source file LOADED.PNG.

I revised the qbrows to look better with a dark background. I revised the astyle giving it a bigger 40x40 icon. Modified the Omega png 80x80 some. Modied the 40x40 and 32x32 icons in the omega icon.

Excellent; I actually wanted to mention a white background. Such a background shouldn't be required. I did delete the "shadow" of the planet, because often such a shadow doesn't look that good. I did consider to change the usual blue planet by appending the "tail" of a Q, but I think an unexpected Q-shaped may look weird.
Perhaps I should have changed the color of the Omega icon, because e.g. folders are yellow too.
W.r.t your archive there were still 2 files without an *.ICO extension. "DIR *. /s" should find those files with a missing dot.
At the moment text2pdf, of my "text2pdf (drop target)", is "under construction". To OS/2'ify it, including possibly using a part of a rather basic PDF-icon of a Windows 3.x-distribution of about the same original package. Our lazy ports are iconless Unix utilities, and tend to use STDIN and STDOUT.

Hi David
I'm looking for a "pointers folder" and an "animated pointers folder" (it does not have to be animated, it just has to represent the animated pointers) based on the ArcaOS default blue folder. Do you have something about this?
Regards

Hi David
I'm looking for a "pointers folder" and an "animated pointers folder" (it does not have to be animated, it just has to represent the animated pointers) based on the ArcaOS default blue folder. Do you have something about this?
Regards
Martin, I had not. I made you four ptr folders. Fixed the 40x40 icons in the ani second folder and reuploaded.
-
Thanks, that is what I was looking for.
-
PhotoMesa (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/java/apps/mmedia&file=photomesa13.zip) icon files, based on the embedded, original 64x64 PHOTOMESA-LOGO.GIF source file:

Hi
I just want to confirm this, 128px is the bigger icon we can have on the OS/2 desktop with a PNG icon (with Dynamic icon), right?
Regards
-
Martin, I can confirm, The properties page must be a backdoor to increase the PNG size beyond 80x80. Beyond this is referred to as a custom size. It is not listed in the properties menu of the folder until you make a custom size.
Listed is before and after. Thanks for pointing this out. I did not realized we could go beyond 80x80.
-
I don't have ArcaOS, but according to an useful dump of AOS files by Dave Yeo files like \sys\icons\BIGICONS\binocular_128px.png do exist indeed.
Is this documented, for example for developers!? I don't have a clue what the default size is, nor how it's used, nor how e.g. an installer can assign a PNG file to a WPPrograsm object.

Text2PDF (drop target) (TEXT2PDF.CMD)
"Solved", by not using the Rexx front-end anymore. A basic and generic PDF icon of TXT2PDF for a.o. Win-OS/2 was too simple.
-
Sigh... ;D Here's one. I mean ... #1. :-\
-
CityDisc xxxxxxxxx (CITYDISC.EXE)
"Solved". Offline map technology of the early 90s. Two rather country-specific icons for Holland (capital and the seat of government only).
-
Lingo (LINGO.EXE)
"Solved". The attached file, almost with too many details, is based on some tv-screenshot.
-
The DOS game Death Rally/[url] has a 32x32 Windows icon file but it's dark, not great and similar alternatives are too detailed and too dark.
(https://winworldpc.com/product/death-rally/1)Carambole Classique (BILJDEMO.EXE)
"Solved". The icon, again almost too detailed, represents the goal of such a game quite good. Hit at least three cushions with your white ball before having hit both other balls. Being too detailed is not a complaint, FWIW. Designers of 80x80 and 128x128 may frequently notice a lack of details. It's not always easy to keep all sizes in mind.
I'm running out of off-topic messages, for one because often there's no good, or no iconic, original or alternative icon...
-
Shut The Box (MLSHUT.EXE)
"Solved". Apparently the game Shut The Box (http://www.shut-the-box.net) (link to some online version) is also known as Klappenspiel, Klappbrett, Klappbox, Klikk Klakk, Blitz, Bakarat, Canoga, Klackers, Batten Down the Hatches, Kingoball, Trictrac, Cut Throat, Fork Your Neighbor, and Jackpot.
-
Put all your icons in one folder and looked at them. All look good!

Thanks for the more on-topic reviews.

Updated and new icon files for Njam (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/games&file=njam-1.25-os2.zip), the "full-featured cross-platform pac-man like game written in C++ using SDL library" by Gianfilippo Cimmino.
I added a new, slightly better looking size 40x40 and sizes 20x20, 16x16. The size, in bytes, of the existing icon size 32x32 image is reduced.
eCS 1.2-style folder icons are included too, because an user may install at least 2 Njam objects: full-screen, and windowed (documented -w switch).

Probably overkill, but I made a 24 bit icon.

F (F.EXE)
"Solved". Perhaps reported earlier: F v4.75 (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/browser/f475beta.zip) has an own simple F.ICO, which may have to be assigned to the WPProgram object explicitly.

Is the attached file FBZX.SVG a 144x144 icon file of FBZX (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/emulator&file=fbzx_290_os2.zip)?
Edit: yes, it is. Converted to PNG online. Probably too detailed for 40x40 or smaller as-is, but perhaps usable for 128x128 and/or 80x80. So this may be an example of having to use a different (part of an original) image for a *.ICO icon file and a *.PNG icon file. Unavoidable.
Not sure if we have got native software to convert SVG files to e.g. PNG?
-
I've edited (stretched vertically and moved) the "FB & ZX" to try to account for smaller sizes. The original, unmodified PNG file may look better. I'll attach a stretched original 144x144 PNG file and a 40x40 icon file.

I had done one myself before I saw your icon. Very similar to yours.

Not really, AFAICT PhantomJS (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/internet/misc&file=phantomjs100-os2.zip) may do the trick if it's not too old, but it looks like the user has to write unclear code (https://github.com/domenic/svg2png) to use it.
-
I had done one myself before I saw your icon. Very similar to yours.
Do use David's. Mine's hardly more than a basic attempt to see if 40x40 would still work at all without too many adjustments, with adopted rounded corners. David has even included all classic OS/2 icon sizes, unlike me.

Quicky (QUICKY.EXE)
Auto Adjust Photo (AAPHOTO.EXE)
NConvert (drop targets) (NCONVERT.EXE)
OptiPNG (drop target) (OPTIPNG.EXE)
PNGcheck (PNGCHECK.EXE)
PNGMeta (CLI drop target) (PNGMETA.CMD)
ehm (EHM.EXE)
BFRunner (BRAINFUCK.EXE)
bwBASIC (BWBASIC.EXE)
Probably all projects without any original icon file.
Tesseract (TESSERACT.EXE)
"Solved". PNG files and OS/2 icon files for Tesseract (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php?sh=1&button=Search&key=tesseract&stype=all&sort=type_name) (OCR), based on the 420x420 github logo file.
-
Andre, I hope you don't mind. I cleaned the icon up a little bit.
-
Oh, all of my icons are off-topic. Originally I did use 2 colors for the Tesseract OCR icon file, but then pixel-ratio's of the top blue square seemed less good. Hence the mix of 256 and less than 256 colors (the larger PNG files, for example). I may use yours; apparently I was overdoing it a little bit.
I noticed I should perhaps improve my 8 bpp Njam ones (unintentional white edges, dark background) too...

I made another one similar to yours. However, I had to make it 24 bit due to all the detail I put in.
-
Is this an upgrade/improvement of the previous 24-bit Njam icon? I don't mind having two, but I can delete the first copy if it's an upgrade instead of a second version.
FTR: mine was based on the single original 32x32 icon. I'll have to look at improving all other sizes.
Is there a generic "trick", method or way to avoid or repair "white" edges when a darker background is used (or when the background is white, but the icon is selected via the WPS)? I don't mind having to look at the level of individual pixels, but getting that right manually can be quite hard. After all 40x40 comes down to a maximum of 1600 pixels. I do understand what's causing the white edges, but I cannot think of a simple solution to reduce the number of "wrong" pixels.

They are actually two separate icons. When you stated you needed to clean yours up, I attempted to make an icon similar to yours in color and design, but bigger.
The WPS renders OS/2 icons with a dark interior and a lighter edge as white around the edge. Also, I lot of time while resizing icons, there is a lot of white or light grey colors. That is why I prefer PNGs over the OS/2 icons. The PNGs render much better. That being said, when making my OS/2 icons, I have to go into each icon size and remove the light edges. As a result, I usually create the various sized PNGs using a Windows program, and use its transparency tool to fix the edges, and then use PMView in ArcaOS to copy the PNG images to the correct size in the OS/2 icon. Circles are easy. I use the transparency tool to make a circle without any interior to remove the light colored edges.

Two by you, one by me: three. Is your earlier njam_24bit.ICO now replaced by your Njam3.ICO? If so, then I just have to delete my copy of njam_24bit.ICO. Otherwise I'll keep all 3. There may be more apps which require 87.5% of a pizza.
Thank you. In this case I was trying to avoid a few badly rendered pixels (32x32 -> 40x40), but because of my usually white folder backgrounds I noticed having added even more "bad" pixels later. One of the tests now will be using PNG first. And a darker test background. I don't mind having to edit pixels, but not as many pixels as possible.
BTW, one of my earlier 80x80 PNG files was based on an original icon, but found in a different package of the same author. If nobody can find that original icon I've claimed to use for a new 128x128 PNG file, then try "related legacy products" of the same source. If you are known for an "EditIcon" package which can deal with Windows icons too, then a "EditWinIco.ZIP" could be a different, "related legacy product". The source of one of my 80x80s, between page 5 and this page, was found that way. Sorry, hard to explain. I've found the icon of "EditIcon" in some related, older, ..., "EditWinIco.ZIP" package. Same source, different package. Probably at github, maybe sourceforge.

Andre, use the latter icon. I can include the first icon in my icon package when I update it. Someone may want to use it for something else.

Thank you; then I'll keep the first one too (because the second one is not an update). From a file management point of view, to not introduce several versions while you've got one.

Text2PDF (drop target) (TEXT2PDF.CMD)
"Solved". By using Text/2 PDF (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php?sh=1&button=Search&key=text2pdf20-os2.zip)'s executable, which has an own icon, instead of a Rexx drop target and text2pdf.

An update of the Njam ones, as announced earlier. No more grey beards when the background is darker. All are based on the original, single 32x32 icon. Goals remained a slightly better looking 40x40 icon, and folder icons to reduce the number of default folder icons in use by one. Not pixel-perfect, but an improvement.
I've looked at using PNG, but didn't end up using it. As usual I've used ICONEDIT.EXE to create the folder icons, by using it's sticky selection of pixels (select the pixels you want to replace, switch to the donor image in the list, and select again to select exactly the same, right donor pixels without having to record or remember coordinates and/or sizes).
Again no request, but perhaps e.g. the file WIN1.JPG in a directory of Njam can be used for a 3-D PNG icon. That'll require the removal of text, so there may be better or easier alternatives. All other original Njam artwork is mainly 32x32'ish-sized only, including a 32x32 *.ICNS icon file.
-
An original 32x32 icon, which doesn't look that great IMhO, for the game 2Pong (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php?sh=1&button=Search&key=2pong).
-
eCS-style folder icon files for the game SDLZombies (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/games/action&file=sdlzombies.wpi).
Edit: updated attachment.
-
An original 128x128 icon file of Formido (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/games/strategy&file=formido.wpi). It's a background of the game. Smaller sizes are available, but e.g. not 40x40 nor 80x80, so one may as well recreate those. Another original (Windows) icon file, size 32x32, is probably included in the OS/2 distribution as ICON.ICO.

Here is my first pretty clock skin. Just made a second skin. Could not resist doing one more. All always, feel free to modify if you think you can make it better.
In ArcaOS, unzip and copy to your drive:\sys\apps\dsaver\modules\prclock directory.

Hey, nice, especially smetal. I'm going to commit these in a couple of days as they're beautiful.
How do you want to be attributed (author)?
Thanks Dave. As for a name, just put DGraser. I working on a digi red. Probably will be finished tonight.
-
Usually I set the author to something like DGraser <dgraser@example.com> but I can just mention authorship in the comment. I take it you're fine with the LGPL licensing?
-
Looks good, better then Doodles where it is hard to see the difference between the lit and unlit segments, thanks.
-
Nice, does it cuckoo?
Going to have to think about a separate package for some of these skins as,
D:\sys\apps\DSSaver\Modules\PrClock>du -h
116K ./bmetal02
384K ./cuckoo
488K ./Digi
492K ./Digi_red
216K ./gclock01
124K ./pmetal02
40K ./sclock01
160K ./smetal02
2.1M .
while dssaver_v24.exe is currently 1.6 MBs.
I am tempted to replace the existing ones though as yours are nicer to me and older installs will still have any I remove.
-
Dave
You may want to hold off on the digi_red. I used all Doodles graphics, but noticed he is missing some graphics which means I am missing some. I will see if I can determine which ones and fix.
I fixed it and reattached and am deleting the earlier version.
-
One last skin.
This is a gold theme, Dave, pick the best ones for inclusion with the DSaver program.
-
Dave, please download the gold metal theme again. I found some things I needed to clean up.
-
Dave, I updated the cuckoo clock. I modified the clock numbers a littel bit. I have attached. See which one you prefer.
-
An alternative classic OS/2 icon file for the game Dodgin' Diamond II (http://www.os2site.com/sw/games/sdl/dd2-0.2.2-os2_.zip), to replace a dark original 128x128 screenshot icon. The icon file is based on the source file GFX.BMP.

Here's a test build of the screensaver with David's work (not yet committed). Package grew by a third.
-
Package grew by a third.
I didn't actually try the package because of the targeted CPU, but OptiPNG or PNGcrush seems to be able to save a few bytes. 345.7 KiB versus 353.8 KiB for the cuckoo subdirectory. 40.8 KiB versus 72.2 KiB for the Digi_red subdirectory.
-
Are you running something older then a Pentium Pro?
Yes, I was thinking about pngcrush.
-
Here's a test build of the screensaver with David's work (not yet committed). Package grew by a third.
Uninstalled the old package and installed this version. Installation was good and all new packages were installed.
-
Thanks for testing. Thanks to Alfredo for redoing the Wis. Upgrades should update in place, including the folder. New installs should use \sys in ArcaOS, \ecs in eCS and \os2\apps in plain OS/2
-
NConvert (drop targets) (NCONVERT.EXE)
"Solved". There won't be such thing as a NConvert (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/graphics/convert&file=nconvert6881.wpi) icon. Instead I've used their XnView.com logo.

Thanks, updated the earlier package I uploaded.
-
Right now, I've just been adding them without committing, eventually I'll prune them down and put a zip (or Warpin package) of the others up. The packages I posted are just test packages, though I am kind of hoping for translations as well :)
Right now I'm leaning towards replacing all the originals as I never much liked them and yours look much better.
Once again, thanks for posting your doodles.
-
You seem to have zipped up the wrong skn file (pmetal02.skn)
-
I have to apologize for the earlier release. I got in a hurry and missed some things. Here it is hopefully for the last time.
Touched up the back.png a little more. Replaced the one in the Peacock module with this PNG.

Quicky (QUICKY.EXE)
Not solved yet. The size of its original UI artwork is 22x22, and the (attached) least worse one can have an ugly shadow. I'm considering to use a generic, classic, generally available formatted-text icon file instead, like existing DOCUMNT*.ICO files.
-
A possibly missing category: better looking 40x40 icons for Microsoft Office 4.3, fully based on the original 32x32 icons (I'll attachg a few, FWIW). I've used PowerPoint to check my library of icons, but AFAICT there's no larger icon which looks like ye olde, classic 32x32 PowerPoint icon.

Dave
On the simple clock and simple color clock, I fixed the second hand. There was some fuzz on the exterior of the clock I originally did not see.

I took you icon and made the four sizes. I did away with the shadow. Although it looked ok on a white background, the same could not be said for a dark background. If you have already finished your icon or don't care for this one, just don't use this one.
-
Dave
Just did the peacock clock in 512, a smaller size. See which one you like better.

I'll use this for Quicky, for one because it's based on the original artwork. It has 2 modes, edit and view. My icon would have been a view-icon, but edit is better because it's almost a simple word processor without printed output. So editing is more relevant than reading a result.
-
A possibly missing category: better looking 40x40 icons for Microsoft Office 4.3, fully based on the original 32x32 icons
Two weren't that hard. I'll attach screenshots of different sizes, but each matches the ratios of the original 32x32 icons. The same method won't work for Access/Exces and Excel, because the images are slightly different.
The grey background has to be replaced by transparency, but now I'll post original *.PNG source files instead of edited *.ICO images. This may be as good/large as the scaled original images will get.
-
OS/2 icon files, only the original 32x32 icon and a new 40x40 icon, for Microsoft Excel 5.0a, Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0 and Microsoft Word 6.0a. No smaller sizes, because the single goal was to create a better looking larger icon which still looks the original one. If you want cool or more modern non-VGA Microsoft Office icons, then perhaps use a newer image source file than Office 4.3 (https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-office/4x)'s.
I'll look at Access 2.0's too, but there the background of larger image sources is different (no text, different ratios of items).
-
Dave
The bouncing padlock screensaver. Can the lock be replaced with a different graphic and if so, is it a OS/2 icon, bitmap or PNG? If an OS/2 icon, can it be replaced with a bitmap or PNG?
-
I'll look at Access 2.0's too.
Here is it. Only 32x32 (original) and 40x40 (new) again, mainly to not make the background look like some bar code. It's a mix of several images.

It's just a bmp, Padlock.bmp. It's added to the DLL as a resource so likely has to stay as a bitmap.

Why not just make a new screensaver, and leave the old ones alone?

So far we've just added skins to the Pretty Clock module, none of which have been committed yet. I am inclined to swap some of David's work with the originals as they do look much better and the rest can be packaged separately. They're easy to add to an install.
As for the Padlock, that was made, with these instructions, http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Creating_modules_for_Doodle's_Screen_Saver_-_Part_2 (http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Creating_modules_for_Doodle's_Screen_Saver_-_Part_2) from eCSBall. I also made the ArcaOS one from the eCSBall.
Don't know what David is thinking of doing with the padlock, wouldn't hurt to swap in a better bitmap or make a new module.

Folder icons for ColEm/2 (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/apps/emulator&file=colem100.zip), a ColecoVision emulator. The icon files are based on the quite dark, but nevertheless unchanged original ColEm/2 icon.

And folder icons for BackAgain/2000.

I am kind of hoping for translations as well :)
Okay, albeit I'm not using it. Some minor space-related fixes w.r.t. SS_NL.HLP and SS_NL.MSG, in smaller chunks. No credits please:
Replace "cherm beveilig" by "schermbeveilig" (removal of the space).
Replace "achtwoord beveilig" by "achtwoordbeveilig" (removal of the space).
Sometimes it's already good. like "Schermbeveiligingsmodules' in the MSG file. In general they'll often have translated two words (password protection). In Dutch that may imply safer passwords (password protection) instead of protection by using a password (passwordprotection).
The rather long HLP file subject "Het instellen van de taal van de scherm beveiliging", almost French with lots of "de la" and "du" (the setting of the language of the screen protection), can be replaced by the shorter "Instellen schermbeveiligingstaal" (set screenprotection'slanguage). Or, perhaps better, "Instellen taal schermbeveiliging" (set(ting the) language (of the) screen protection). Or just "Instellen taal", set language, if that;'s clear enough. If screen protection is "screen protector", then replace 'schermbeveiliging" by "schermbeveiliger" ("Instellen taal schermbeveiliger"). Setting the language of the screen protecting software. That may be the best match, but that's unverified.

This is actually "scherm beveiliger", should it still be "schermbeveilig"?
Replace "achtwoord beveilig" by "achtwoordbeveilig" (removal of the space).
Likewise, this is actually "Wachtwoord beveiliging", should it be "achtwoordbeveilig" Also I find "wachtwoord beveiligingsvenster" and "wachtwoord beveiligd" Perhaps I should attach the IPF.

Thanks, I'll attach the IPF due to confusion as mentioned above.
Also I added NLS support to CairoShapes and currently only have a Spanish translation, I'll attach the simple en.msg, both in a zip.

No, it's a case-sensitive binary replacement string which accounts for both "Schem..." and "scherm". And for all suffixes. A simple search & replace will do, without having to touch any other character. As discussed recently in a browser name-thread, -er works the same in several languages anyway. Protect, protecter. Just replace all occurances of "cherm beveilig" by "chermbeveilig".
Same. It will fix more than it will brake. "wachtwoordbeveiligingsvenster" is okay, and so is "wachtwoordbeveiligd". The "s" between "beveiliging" and "venster" is the same "s" as yours. hers, his, Tom's. An alternative is "venster (of the) wachtwoordbeveiliging". Just replace the text as instructed, without touching any another characters. Case-insensitive ("cherm Beveilig" -> "chermbeveilig"). Delete the space; don't change "screener" to "creen". Do keep wrapping lines in mind ("screen0D0Aprotection" instead of "screen20protection").
You'll be able to search & replace w.r.t. the on-topic file. I'll look at the other one later, and wouldn't mind some translation requests-thread with a few sentences or words, with context, per day. In the case of Doodle's we're talking about a full manual, of a product which I'm not using. Hence the restriction. Extra spaces are occuring quite a few times, without having to review (and possibly discuss) a full manual.
-
I'll attach the simple en.msg, both in a zip.
A candidate for a translation requests-thread, despite of the fact that the MSG file may be compiled. So simple, that Google gets it right, albeit in Dutch you'd use the rather detailed fixed expression "shapes AND figures" less often.
English: Cairo Shapes
Dutch: unchanged, copied or borrowed words. "Cairo shapes" (not uppercasing each word) would be overdoing it.
English: Shows different colorful shapes and figures.
Dutch: Toont verschillende kleurrijke vormen en figuren. Assuming a context of ("Dave's solution now ) Shows different ...".
Here the important full linguistic context is missing: "Using the Cairo library.", and it may be easier to replace "library" by "DLL" because the isolated last "L" isn't the first character of a Dutch bibliotheek. In IBM's Dutch (source: OS MSG file) DLLs are "dynamic-link-modules", but you aren't using the word module in English.
-
An update, of the 3 *.ICO files (folder closed, folder opened, NConvert.EXE) only.
Oops, this is a hard one. With a bad monitor it still doesn't look alright...
-

Google's German translation, one of the eCS languages, seems to be right too: Zeigt verschiedene farbenfrohe Formen und Figuren..
What's the context of the MSG text "Using the Cairo library."?
-
Cairo is the library that takes care of the drawing, similar to PDF or PS. It is also the library that draws Mozilla excepting the frame and widgets. https://www.cairographics.org/ (https://www.cairographics.org/)
Strictly speaking, library is more accurate then DLL, which is a type of library, Dynamically Linked Library.
-
I do mean the (missing) context of the text to be translated. It can be a header of a manual, it can be a banner, it can be an error text, and so on.
Do you have a matching sentence, i.e. context, or otherwise a technical context? Translating is not just a matter of translating words. The context should make clear how to interpret the specific text, when there may be mote than one match. The word "Using" may be more difficult than "library".
For the L of the DLL I'll probably use IBM's translation ("module"). In OS/2's Dutch a library is what you'll find in the x:\OS2\HELP subdirectory. To show a case where context could matter, "HELP LIBPATH" produces (translated):
dynalink-library
DLL-module
DLL
DLL-file
OSO001H.MSG contains (I didn't check the whole file):
module
dynamic-link-module
So almost a library of choices, but the point is that the option "library" is missing. Dynalink-library occurs twice, but that's a rather unusual word. Anyway, I want context of the whole "Using ..."-part. To avoid the introduction of animals when it's raining cats and dogs in English, while it's raining pipe handles in Dutch. For example, embed it in a sentence or story. Like "(I am) Using (the) ... library (at the moment)". Or "(Manual, Chapter 2,) Using ...". The clarifying context may influence what's right, or better.
-
Well the Cairo clock's translation is 'MOD_DESC="Tijd en huidige datum.\nMet gebruik van de Cairo bibliotheek.";' Might be best
-
Met gebruik van de Cairo bibliotheek."
That's "By using (of) the Cairo library".
May I suggest "Met gebruikmaking van de Cairo library.", to respect the context and to borrow the word library (as a part of the more common L of DLL)?
You'd use "met gebruikmaking van" (by making use of) like: "I'm not a programmer, but I'm recompiling Quicky by using Smedley's build environment". I didn't see your other text ("Tijd en ...") with an editor.
I don't know how the Germans would translate library. "Erstellt mit der Cairo ..."?
-
Met gebruik van de Cairo bibliotheek."
That's "By using (of) the Cairo library".
Which seems accurate.

bibliotheek is only for books? Don't forget that libraries don't have to be a DLL. There's static libraries, which can use a program (AR) that can be called a librarian for creating the table of contents and X11 device drivers are shared libraries like *nix uses
I don't know how the Germans would translate library. "Erstellt mit der Cairo ..."?
Christian Hennecke translated it as, "Verwendet die Bibliothek Cairo." Christian is a programmer so likely understands programming libraries.
-

Seems. "Met gebruikmaking van" (fixed expression, by using) and "gebruik van" (using) can (!) be as different as using drugs to chemically enhance your paint (applied usage), and using (consuming) drugs to paint.
Still yes, in IBM OS/2's Dutch. Again, just use "library", if anything to not introduce even more unusual words with the same technical meaning. Programmers will know what you mean. The Germs are more likely to translate words, while the cloggies can rightfully claim in the highest percentage of people in the EU with English as a second language. In OS/2 a bibliotheek is what you'll find in x:\OS2\HELP.
Google will translate "Verwendet die Bibliothek Cairo" as "maakt gebruik van de bibliotheek Cairo". The full context is still missing, so I don't know if "Using the Cairo libary" should be translated as "Met gebruikmaking van de Cairo library" or the slightly lesser "Maakt gebruikt van de Cairo library". The context still is key:
"(This is created) Met gebruikmaking van de Cairo library.", or "(It) Maakt gebruikt van de Cairo library." (not a proper sentence without something representing the "ït").
So don't be afraid to not translate "library", and next time please provide a context... ;) Without a context we're still discussing a very simple text. Screenshot, sample sentence, ...
Christian's "verwendet" and "die Bïbliothek" seem okay. Verwendet also because it supports my "gebuikmaking"-proposal(s), and I cannot confirm nor deny that a German OS/2 refers to a library as a "Bibliothek". With a Dutch OS/2 a "bibliotheek" is a collection of digital books, while a "library"avoids all technical and linguistic discussions. Earlier I've translated something related to xCenter here, where you may have noticed that I hardly had to change anything. And there the context of (the unverifiable) "any CPU" was important. Pick any number (if it's 4 you'll win), any number is right, ...
Context, context, context. Some English words may even have an opposite meaning, in English. In this case you can see that "Gebruik van" as a source is wrong, because Christian guessed (or assumed, or verified) you meant "Met gebruikmaking van". Context, context, context. Not the possible error(s) of an existing word-by-word-by-word translation.

The NConvert ones are harder than expected, and need more work. With a bad monitor it still doesn't look alright... ???
Meanwhile here's a 128x128 PNG icon file for ScummVM (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php?sh=1&button=Search&key=scummvm), based on the 512x512 original icon file.
-
The NConvert ones are harder than expected
BTW: as stated earlier, there is no such thing as an original NConvert icon. There is an alternative, their XnConvert icon, but that's a different product. Difficulties have nothing to do with the center of the styled eye, so I'll continue to use their generic logo. Nevertheless here's XnConvert's, FWIW:

FWIW, I attempted the two os/2 icons. One is 24 bit and the other is 8 bit.
-
And a fixed, alternative NConvert icon file. If you have installed the NConvert WarpIN package, then copy any of the NConvert.ICO files to the directory of NCONVERT.EXE. Optionally assign the earlier folder icons to the folder of NConvert.
Icons can be mixed. Then the folder icon represents their brand or whole family of products, and the EXE's icon represents whatever you prefer: the family of products (wrong), or the different product XnConvert (wrong too). At 40x40 and smaller David's may work better. Mainly due to less original details, and it's not trying to look like a styled eye that hard.
In the end I first changed the transparent pixels to a color which somehow matched the preferred color of the border better, before resizing, which was easier to undo and fix than software interpreting transparency as white pixels.
-
BTW, some of the Toolkit v4.52's icons look bad at 40x40 (OS/2 Sample Programs-folder). FWIW.
PM$tock's icon was a surprise too. 128x128, but possibly the worst resolution to view it. Rendered at 40x40 it's actually not that bad, but otherwise a weird and ugly mix of a detailed bar chart (volume), the text "DJI" drawn by hand, and too much green and transparent paint used to draw a line. As if it was designed to be rendered. I'll attach an ICONEDIT.EXE screenshot, for entertainment purposes only.
@David, you stated that circles were easy with your tools. Can you post 4, please? Width of the circle 40, 32, 20 and 16. Outlined or filled. If the color matters, then it's very dark brown. Almost black. I've got a 18x18 image source (BALL.PCX of the game Rebound (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/games/action&file=rebound.zip)), which is a 16x16 ball with a border. I want to use the shape of "perfect" circles, to compensate for the low-res look of the game. I can enlarge the ball myself, e.g. from 16x16 to 40x40, and next use the circles as a "paste target". I'll attach the 16x16 ball (with its border), but I'm willing to copy & paste myself.
@David/2, regarding circles and WhoIs: would it be possible to combine a plain-jain globe (simpler than the attached sample image, and without details like network connections) with a slightly larger interrobang character(s) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interrobang) to replace the question mark, mainly for size 40x40!? The question mark of the attached sample image doesn't work at 40x40. When we get rid of the global network connection, then the interrobang character(s) may express the "wtf ru!?". I like the concept, an unusual 3D globe with network connections and a 3D'ish ?-button, but there are too... many... details for 40x40. For one we may need a larger ?, and we may not be able to keep using the connections. Instead of the interrobang character(s) a black silhouette of a human spy may work too, as the background of a question mark.
-
Hi Andre
I was out of town for a couple of days. Got back today. Then the power button on my computer broke. I will have to remember not to turn my computer off. I may not get it up again.
Did two whois icons. The original and another one with the question mark modified. I tried the interrobang. I could not get it to look good at the same sizes.
I have attached the rings also with the icons. You can always change it to the color you need.
-
A quickly made rebound icon.
-
Regarding 80 and/or 128: I'm not using ArcaOS nor eCS 2.x, but at https://www.arcanoae.com/shop/arcaos-5-commercial-edtion (https://www.arcanoae.com/shop/arcaos-5-commercial-edtion) I noticed that it has "Scalable desktop icons, up to 128×128(, based on popular Linux desktop themes).". If possible, available and relevant I'll try to use 128x128 and the AOS naming convention ("lowercase_128px.png"). I don't know if 128x128 will be scaled down to 80x80, but 128x128 is the advertized supported size indeed.
Rebound (REBOUND.EXE) (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php?sh=1&button=Search&key=rebound-r2)
Wow! Solved, by David's (who may now be busy creating a backup :-\).
I'll change my inferior, lesser, pathetic file's number to 2. Which is just the game's small 16x16 brown ball artwork, enlarged by using the consistency and quality of the simple rings. Those rings were more productive and useful than expected by me. Counting or recording numbers of pixels, versus guessing rendered pixels and matching inconsistencies. I'll keep the rings (/ dark ball). It helps.
-
another one with the question mark modified. I tried the interrobang. I could not get it to look good at the same sizes.
Excellent. I was fearing a new globe. I guess I like this one because the colors of the globe aren't trying to be realistic, so it's more clear that you are not looking for something related to geography, and the modified question mark improves the quality at 40x40. I already noticed the original one was too bright/white at 40x40, at least with some monitors.
-
Folder icons, based on David's modified question mark-theme, for a WhoIs folder.
And two icons for Microsoft Office (MSOFFICE.EXE (https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-office/4x), a Win-OS/2 toolbar) and Microsoft Organization Chart (ORGCHART.EXE). Only the size 40x40 is new.
-
A forgotten category: a few system-related utilities. Here's a quick one for S.M.A.R.T. monitor (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/util/disk&file=smartmon.zip), size 128x128 only.

And a classic icon file for the S.M.A.R.T. monitor, based on an eCS drive icon.

A forgotten category: a few system-related utilities.
Just to be complete, all are text-mode apps:
CPUInfo (CPUINFO.EXE, may be Dave Yeo's, shows flags and properties of the CPU(s))
Dhrystone (DHRY.EXE, CPU benchmark with YMMV-results, I saw an unclear grey blob as an unofficial icon)
DISKIO (DISKIO.EXE, disk benchmark)
SysInfo (SYSINFO.EXE, i.e. not SysInfo/2, a text-mode dump of several basic systeem settings and proporties)

Just doodling again.
Made another pretty clock which I am calling lemon lime.

Hi
I missed something on the road. How it is supposed to be used the clock skins? On which OS/2 program are supported?
Regards
Just copy the folder and skin to the
drive:\sys\apps\dSSaver\modules\prclock\
Right click on desktop and select properties > screen saver > page3
Then select Pretty Clock and the module should be there. Configure it and pick the "Start Now" button to see what it looks like. If you don't like it, you can always delete the folder and the skn. Pretty clock is where you select the different clock modules for your screen saver, if you so choose.
-
I have made a new blue PNG folder scheme for ArcaOS. These are PNGs to be use for dynamic icons when using the Dynamic icon display. Every folder has to be individual replaced which for some people may be more work than it is worth.
-
I decided to do one more PNG folder grouping, this time yellow. This is the most extensive folder grouping I have done so far. Again, this applies to the dynamic displays found in ArcaOS. Again, each folder must individually be replaced. I have chosen to run the yellow with my OS/4 kernel partition and the multicolor folder scheme with my ArcaOS kernel.
As near as I can tell, using PNGs has little effect on my systems.
-
David, as nice as your icons are I still prefer the angled Warp 4 style, far easier to see opened items.
-
Made more new Arca Blue folder icons.
-
Some Additional ArcaOS blue folder icons.
-
Thanks for the NEPMD folder icons. I'll add them.
-
I was looking back at my dssaver pretty clock skins and noticed that the *.skn was missing on some. So I am uploading the skins I created. Just unzip and copy folders and files to your dssaver\modules\prclock directory.
-
If you want a better trashcan, the icons can be replaced. Here is a couple of the old Windows trashcans I made and a couple of new ones I made.

Thanks for this. I've committed to the source and adjusted the description names slightly and added your name as an attribution, if you object, say so now :) as they're likely to be in the next AOS release.

Dave, anything I upload can be used however anyone so chooses. If one chooses to modify and/or improve on any of my work, feel free to do so. As I have said, I just like to dooble.
-
I made 2 new galvanized trashcan icons.
Made a few small changes to the trashcans and uploaded cans2.
-
I made a couple of different trashful icons.
-
Made another modification to match it more closely to the last two trashful icons.
-
I took some of my previously made shadow icons and moved them to the left and also made a few changes to some.
Just copy and rename, and overwrite the original shadow icon in the Warp4 theme directory. Then restart WPS or reboot.
-
Wanted to see what a gold icon trashcan looked like.
-
Made a few more blue folder icons.

Dave, I found problems with 2 of the Prclock modules in ArcaOS 5.06. I have attached the corrected modules.
-
Thanks, looks much better then what I committed. You must have read my mind as I was just considering doing a proper release.

Hi David.
If it is not much to ask, can you make a logo for the LSwitcher?

I made some new ArcaOS icon folders. Each folder must be individually replaced from the program properties icon pages.
-
I had made some new FM/2 icons a while back.
The pic has some of my new orange icons. However, the zip contains the standard ArcaOS blue icons.
-
Tried to improve the Qrt web browser icon.
-
Made some otter browser icons.
-
Just added more PNG setup icons.
-
After making more game icons, I have included all and uploaded ver 10.
A few more game icons have been created. Started a new game grouping. So far, just a sheriff icon.
-
Just updated my jade portal folder icons.
Have an example desktop.
-
I modified the feather icon and added a PNG icon also.
-
Made myself a new background.

Made some new colored glove pointers, both right and left handed.
-
a couple of new XWP trashcan icons.
I found one mistake in the trashful icon. I corrected and uploaded again. If you like, you will need to download again to get the corrected trashful icon.
David
-
Just made a few more xwp trash icons above. Added another one here also.
-
some glove pointers sets
Modified the yellow gloves changing the hot spot on some of the pointers.
-
Still doodling around with backgrounds.

This is a new ArcaOs folder theme. I deleted the previous one and uploaded this one.
Cleaned up some of the icons
Added a bunch of new icons
Corrected some of the typos
-
I slightly modified a few open office icon PNGs created by Samer Mansour .
The quick start and open document pngs come from the
sys\icons\bigicons
found in ArcaOS
What I thought as the master is actually the database icon. I uploaded the master icon.
I also created a clipgrap icon PNG.
-
A couple of new game icons.
Also made a FeatherNote icon.
-
Made a couple of blue pened and closed folders for dooble, Also Made a 80x80 PNG program icon for those that are using PNG's instead of the OS2 icon.
-
Has anyone noticed that when one REARRANGES any folders icons from its default setting which is STANDARD to anything else such as TOP,, when the folder is closed and reopened, it reverts back to the default STANDARD. This has to be a bug. ArcaOS 5.07.

Not a bug - more likely, a user-level configuration error. You probably have XWP's 'Always maintain sort order' enabled. You can disable it on a per-folder basis from its notebook, or globally from the WPS object in System Setup.
FYI... the 'Arrange' option simply changes the icons' positions - the option itself is not stored. However, it is remembered until the folder is closed. Thereafter, your arrangement will persist through multiple opens/closes provided nothing causes the icon positions to change - such as sorting them either manually or via 'Always maintain sort order'.
-
New Yellow PNG folder icons. Had to change manually. ArcaOS unlike eComstation does not allow it to be automatically done
I must say, you have done a very beautiful set
-
Thanks for the info and compliment. I made some corrections and made more PNG folders to choose from. The zip file is now so large I had to split it into two. It exceeded the size limit for this site to upload. I deleted the original. This folder set is by far the largest I have ever done.
-
Made one more folder set (Grey). Decided to make the icons on the folders a little bigger. Again there are so many PNGs that I had to split it into 2 zip files.
-
I did so more revisions on the grey black folders. Continued to make the icons bigger, added more icon selections. I deleted the old zips and uploaded the new ones. I named the zip files blk_folders to keep one from getting mixed up with the previous ones which were called greyfoldes.
-
Did one more color scheme. This time green. I think I finally got the ideal size for most of the icons.
Made some additional green folder icons.
-
Hi David.
First of all, thanks for all the years you have dedicated to create icons and beautiful things for the platform.
I have a request for you. I like a lot to have an icon on the XCenter to minimize all open windows on the desktop at once. I use the "HBShowDesktop (http://www.xcenter.os2usr.org/)" widget.
But I don't like the icon, since it is "too Windowsish"... reminds me to Win98 I guess.
Do you have a suggestion between the icons that you have created to replace it?
Regards
-
Hi Martin,
Here is one idea I had. It is based on one of the minimize folder icons.
-
Thanks David.
I'm keeping this icon for the moment. Thanks, looks nice.

Looks very nice !!! ;D

I created these titlebar bitmaps years ago for estyler.
Unzip and copy the desired bitmaps to the
sys\apps\styler\bitmamp\tbkgnds
-
I took the ArcaOS logo and added 5.1 to it.
Copy to your OS2/Bitmap directory.
Go to desktop > background > color only and select a background color you want
Then unselect the Color Only and choose the logo. It is a PNG, PNGs work for backgrond.
NOTE: ArcaOS PNG backgrounds do not recognize transparencies . Black is the best background color for this PNG logo.
-
Added 5.1 to the ArcaOS backgrounds
Just download the PNGs file name and copy to your OS2\Bitmap directory.
Go to your
desktop > background and choose the one you want.

I am still getting organised -- new machine, new AOS-5.1 copy &c -- so could have missed an existing set of the icons I have in mind, but how about some representing operating systems back to CP/M?
CP/M : interlocking chiselled-stone gear wheels with a flint axe leaning against them.
DOS : an ox cart loaded with jumbled letters & digits, towed by bullocks.
UNIX : stacked USian phone books (inc. a C manual) topped by an old button-dialler phone (courteous AT&T reference).
Linux : not sure -- try a parody of UNIX, a heap of paperwork with varied designs of phone & computer having a slightly homebrew look.
OS/2 : (proving we can take jokes as well as dish 'em out) old OS/2 logo backed by a radiant rising sun.
Windows -- abandoned versions : a garish multicoloured Windows logo, one numbered pane broken.
Windows -- current : blue (?) Windows logo fronted by a cowpat/cowflop with a version number on it. (Okay, getting a wee bit political there...)
eCS : the basic eComStation logo.
AOS : today's logo, possibly without version number.
Other OSes (Mac, Beos, &c) : have fun being inventive.

Hi Andrew
Some of what you desire can be found on line. I do not really have any interest in this. What little I do is to add a little variety to ArcaOS. I am no expert designer and am self taught. I takes time which I would prefer using on the operating system IZ use.

A 5.1 boot logo and a new logo.
See page 19 for 5.1 backgrounds.

-
Hi, David. Thanks for gracing my bout of silliness with a serious reply. :) Following your URLs, one sees the subject has indeed been well kicked about, perhaps more than it merits. The only logos I ever improvised for my eCS system were simple things, like a WordStar one which I probably must enlarge when my AOS system is working; but at least we're only talking about a star on a plain b/g. Simple is good with logos, methinks.
Thrive.

Thanks David for the Boot logos. I want to group them to upload them to hobbes.
I grouped some here: Boot_Logos_Vol-1.zip (https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/multimedia/images/bootlogo/Boot_Logos_Vol-1.zip)
Just a question, since I haven't check it yet. In ArcaOS 5.1.0, with UEFI mode, now the boot logo can be a high resolution logo. Which format and resolution is supported? what filename should be changed?

Hi Martin
Not sure. Previously 16 and 256 colors were supported. Did not know about the high resolution change. The boot logo ending in *.lgo should be renamed OS2logo and copied to the AracoOS root directory. Save the original logo before you overwrite it in case one wants to go back to the original logo or there is a problem. The original logo may be read only. Change this to writable to successfully copy the new one over. I use FM/2 which makes this simple.

The big icons that come with ArcaOS are not a complete folder set. First I tested the folder color. The light blue to me just wasn't a good color choice. I did this.
Resized the folder to 80x80 from 128x1128
Darkened the blue just a small amount
Took out the opcacity and came up with the color I used.
Added lots and lots of folders
-
Made a new desktop background to go with the blue folders.

Hi David, some beautiful art work.
Would it be possible to do some of your boot logos, or just a simple ArcaOS logo as a 128x128, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced? This to use with the rEFInd boot manager, which currently uses os_unknown.png for ArcaOS.
Thanks

Hi Dave
I made two test images. I have no way to test.
The first is 128x128 8 bit
The second is 800x600 8 bit.
Not sure if they are not interlaced. I checked the internet and I could find no good way to check. If you test, back up the original. and have another partition available to where you can boot to enable you to replace the logo is it fails to boot.

Thanks, this is close to what I meant. Using file to identify the file (yum install file), I see
U:\EFI\BOOT\icons>file os_unknown.png
os_unknown.png: PNG image data, 128 x 128, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
Z:\Mozprofiles\Downloads>file arlogo128.png
arlogo128.png: PNG image data, 128 x 128, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced
Is the A in RGBA for transparency?
rEFInd is a UEFI boot manager, runs before OS/2 and quite capable of loading AOS 5.1, or rather OS2LDR.EFI
Here's a screenshot form their webpage, http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/),
I'll have to reboot to test it. I take it you're fine with me trying to get the rEFInd maintainer to include it in the distribution?

I modified yours a little bit and came up with this. I then added the pngs to Dave's example to see what each looks like.

Program folders are yellow.
Network folders are green.

Hello David
I was wondering if the 4OS2 developer would like to change the old 4OS2 icons.
I like your icons (attached here), so I wanted to ask you permission to let them use your icons in whatever license 4OS2 is being developed. I don't know if the developer would accept that, but I want to give it a try.
Is it possible to get your permission?
Regards
-
Do what you want Martin. Anything I upload can be used or modified for what they need. If they can enhance anything, have at it.
-
I was wondering if the 4OS2 developer would like to change the old 4OS2 icons.
I think the original icon is still delivered with 4os2 packages. Locally I've it changed a bit, but... Do you think we should pack additional ones together?
I don't know if the developer would accept that, but I want to give it a try.
We need an icon like the original one in ICO format with all it's different (currently 5) resolutions. You may have discovered that the 4os2 icon in xcenter looks different then on the desktop. So I know the 2 are needed at least. Don't know about the ogher three though. See picture. Anyway the user can choice which icon he uses. Packing a few png in addition shouldn't be a big problem. But what would be the benefit? I mean everyone can take another icon maybe the pngs from here and attach it to his objects anyway. And not everyone does have/like .png icons installed.

Yes, I noticed that the smaller size icon in .ico format is needed. I want to play a little bit with it and make a zip file with the PNG and ICO format.
I haven't yet submitted anything to the developer, I just think that the 4OS2 project and ArcaOS can benefit to improve these icons (in a very little way), since the 4OS2 icons looks "out of tune" with the rest. The word "JP" no longer means something, not sure what SE represents, the icon does to represent a shell, etc.
But in the end if the developer doesn't want it, that's it.

I was playing around with a new os2 bitmap icon. Working with os2 bitmaps is not easy.
The red NL in the icon stands for Netlabs. This is just a doogle to be used or not used,
-
But in the end if the developer doesn't want it, that's it.
There are only a few of them and if one of them thinks it's worth the effort and has nothing better to do:-).
Seriously the current repo is at github. There are the last fixes from Steven. As our browsers don't work there I can't see much. But I'm pretty sure issues are still tracked here - https://trac.netlabs.org/4os2.
Oh just saw your ticket. Maybe you've start reading here - http://4os2.netlabs.org/en/site/index.xml
-
Paul's Qt6 builds of Dooble still work at Github, the Qt5 ones mostly did until recently when the code stopped rendering. There are issues but it is usable by mousing over the odd element that doesn't display.
-
Hello
I will post these icons in a ticket to see if they gave some interest to the developer.
