Applications / Re: ArcaOS 5.1 - First Impressions
« on: January 11, 2024, 06:12:56 pm »
Totally frozen, Dutch will be available with version 5.2, but they didn't mentioned which sub version. So I don't know if the hardware will last that long, I'm afraid that this is  some kind of "goodbye". I have to wait at least for another year if not more. Also no translation requests received, so its firmly on the back-burner.[...] So, a lot of promises, with version 5.0 its promised, but no delivery. Not good. I'm not sure if I'm willing to translate with this knowledge.

If there's anyone to blame for this situation, it's your fellow countrymen.

For years I've been looking for a Dutch translator for XWP and haven't found one. For v1.0.14, I had to crowd-source my Dutch translations from people here on os2world. Sadly, they haven't been seen here since the pandemic, so I suspect they're no longer with us. So, who's left? If I can't get someone to translate 20-30 phrases every year or two, how can you expect AN to turn out something far, far larger? It seems unrealistic.
Thanks, found the start of that request with a file. I did respond back then and I was not actively busy with translating. Also I asked for the manual and for some reason it ended there. I can't recall what happened, sorry. I did open the file which was given by you and there is not much in it which can be translated, because a lot of things are the same in Dutch due to English influence in the language. But not all and certainly not a manual. So don't blame me for not responding, I did respond. Also  translating is going totally different than most developers think it will go. Also they sometimes want that you translate in some kind of environment for which you have to  download lot of programs which pollute your own computer and that is just for one program. Another program needs something else and so on. This is the reason I don't  go to translate Libreoffice. They don't have a glue how that's going and are not willing to do it differently. For your information, Libreoffice is far larger then just one program, special there that I have to write a complete almost new manual, not only in Dutch, but also in English!. But then I will be busy for some years and almost daily. And I do it for free (I have already an income), so I want a little more respect and also communication when something is not clear or doesn't work (remind the "Y" in English, which is "J" in Dutch. Often overlooked. Have a nice day, thank you.

I'm typing this from a Raspberry Pi 400, with OS/2 its complicated to get online. So, a lot of promises, with version 5.0 its promised, but no delivery. Not good. Hello,

I have two Java programs which do something with recording;
Program LAoE https://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6e137.htm and
program FScape https://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6e146.htm.

Both programs run with the Java version available for OS/2-eCS-ArcaOS

That said, if you want to do something serious with sound, buy a dedicated Windows computer because all software related stuff is Windows optimized, even Apple is  sometimes not supported (in the same way). Also Linux is something in the area of OS/2-etc, but once running you can choose between more programs.

Mind that the "root" of OS/2 DOS is not the same as the "root" for OS/2 itself. So there is a change that your BBS software is looking in C:\ or similar instead of the S/2 DOS directory. BBS software did always run very well in the setups I had back in the BBS days. May be you have to tweak here and there in the setup of DOS with memory and alike. So find out in what directory your BBS software is looking. BBS software is in my mind always 8.3, more was not invented in those days.

Programming / Re: Qt6 Application Testing

Well... I ran the install on linux, and sure enough:
Code: [Select]
-- Up-to-date: /usr/local/Qt-6.5.1/examples/quick/animation/examples/quick/animation/shared/libanimation_shared.so

So it installs into a similar path to OS/2 - but linux is obviously able to find it.....
With finding out how Java programs works on OS/2 I had very frequent the problem that the complete file specification was too long for OS/2, there is a limit. May be this plays here too. The complete file specification wil then be truncated and if you don't have an error logger specific on that part you will never know.

Hi

I also saw reports of MoneyDance working. It runs just the first part to create a file (which don't get created), and the rest does not run.
Supposedly 2011 version should work.
https://infinitekind.com/previous-versions-of-moneydance

Any help is welcome.

Regards
You need a license key to run it, that's why I don't have it in my pages and probably its the why you can't create files.

Hi, I'm just checking the old news archive.

There used to be a Geometria version that used to run with our Java, but I can not find it anymore.
http://www.geocentral.net/geometria/
I don't understand this, you can download it from my Java pages, what is the problem?

Today I have added a small program after a long time again. It is called CharMap;

We have already such a program, but this one is written in Java. I have to use it on my Linux system, real messy system (I know that I stand on some toes  :o, sorry for that). The program works in Java 11 and it does work also in our Java 6. I was afraid that our system might be to alien, but no, all fonts are listed. And as you can see in the picture it also find our clipboard.

You can find the program on my site in English (some sort) https://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6e174.htm or in Dutch https://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6n174.htm.

Have fun, keep on asking and see you later,
Regards

Hi Joop, you can only upload to /pub/incoming. You need to include a text file with the same name as the zip except .txt instead of .zip. README.TEMPLATE is the template for the text file, seems to have gone missing from /pub/incoming so attached.
Okay, done it, uploaded SportTracker and Geogebra to /pub/incoming, Succes. Let's see how it proceeds.

Thanks Dave, there is a page with some information how to, but all directories and files in that particular page do give errors or you get the message that the file can't be found. So also for README.TEMPLATE. I going to try again.

Hi Joop

If you want to upload files to hobbes, put the directory where you want to store it.
- Maybe SportTracker will be good to go "/pub/java/apps/misc" since there is not an specific category for it.
- Geogebra, I think it should to go "/pub/java/apps/science/math", to keep the same structure as the /os2/ files.

Regards
Tried, but it don't  go. I use NFTP, but no files are send and I do have the directory of Hobbes /pub/java/apps/misc in one part of the program visible. Password or so stuff?

Hi Joop

I had completed the Java upload to hobbes today.
I'm only missing the latest working version of GeoGebra and SportsTracker. I can not found the older versions that worked on OS/2 (java 1.6) online.
Managed to get online for my homepage, hobbes and os2 world. So the important stuff is covered  8). I probably can upload above packages to Hobbes /pub/java, but can I also upload it strait to where it should be available or is only /pub/java available for "outsiders"?

Regards

Thanks Martin, will look into it. I copy old to new and change a few things, something went wrong with this one. The strange thing is that I always test the stuff, probably this slipped through.
I have copied the Java stuff from Hobbes "Hobbes java apps.ods" and sort it alphabetic "Hobbes java apps alfabetisch.ods". I did it in LibreOffice Calc on my Raspberry Pi 400. So this is one step ahead.

Can I upload it to Hobbes?
Yes, Just send me a link (or post here if it is less than 5MB) and I can upload it to hobbes.

Regards
I have visited Hobbes and then the Java corner, there are already a lot of packages available. Is there an easy way I can download some kind of list in order to see whats missing and what need to be upgraded? Example Rachota is same version, but on my site it does also contain Dutch.
In Hobbes /pub/java/apps/misc you can find Data Crow 4.0.1 (2014-07-25), why not in /pub/java/apps/database/?
