Applications / Re: Installing IBM Pen for OS/2?
« on: July 25, 2014, 01:12:37 am »
Did that, killed that file. I let the install program installing pen for os/2, this time it did run, but with the instruction not to update my config.sys. First thing I did was going to the config.sys from pen for os/2. It didn't seem harmfull what it wanted to do, so I swapped files and give it a try. The first problem was ibmlanlk which stopped the system. Did boot to maintenance partition, did put a rem before the line in the config.sys on main system and try again. No succes, again halted system with an error of internal revision something. Puzzled. Did go back, renamed the config.sys and copied my old back, restart and here we are. Now you use pen for os/2, as what I read with eCS 2.x, I'm still on 1.2 Dutch. Any suggestions in what corner I have too look?

Joop, you're not clear whether this failure is occasional or all the time with FF17.0.11, can you clarify? I'll have to refresh my memory on how to install the plugin  :)
I don't know, this was the second time that I updated a part of my homepage. When I do that I usually have open a FF, Webwriter/2, PMView Pro, Embellish and for testing when I'm ready with the page Total Validator. I just notice and when I'm aware of a problem, mine or program, then I watch more closely what's happening, also try to get an error file. Problem with eCS (OS/2) is that's too stable so you forget a few things like the above with Java requirements. Have to dig in, work around for now is close a few programs or close all programs and restart just the ones you really need. Doing that FF 17.0.11 and Total Validator just works together, even that I still have opted in the preferences of Total Validator for an older version of FF with its own directory. I will change all those settings as soon as I'm confident that FF17 works identical as FF10 for me.

Had today the problem again. Memory usage about 450M of the 1G I have. Again Java won't start, so its not the Java program, but its like Java itself won't start. Is it possible that Java does a test if enough memory is available?

Perhaps lack of memory. Does it help if you close all other programs? A reboot might help too. What is your VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT?
Perhaps, 2048. Just put all programs next to each other, but don't know if it was same order and it now just works, total memory used around 300M. Didn't restart the computer, but did close all programs. So may be there was a lock up in memory, don't know. But I can't recall that I was busy with big things, biggest picture was around 1.3Mb, but that won't say a thing how its mapped in memory. And I do work fast, so may be I used memory faster then that Ecs set it free. Can hardly believe that, but otherwise I don't know. Hick up in memory banks with a bad byte? Its hot today, but computer inside temp is just 51degree C which is a good value for chips. System was set up on august 3, 2005, so its almost 9 years old now, for sure you don't get that with Windows, that will stall much sooner ;-)

Busy today with updating my homepage, just to hot to do anything else. In front of me big fan at high speed for a little air, but that's hot too. I all did it in FF17.0.11 together with Webwriter/2, PMView Pro and Embellish. Last thing before I upload pages to my site is validating. I do this with Total Validator, it runs on Java 6. With FF10.0.12r2 no problems, but with FF17.0.11 the program won't start. I can repeat this problem. Both FF are installed same way, both are using RUN with an .ENV file which are the same. What will prevent Java to run a program which has nothing to do with FF?

Joop

TV-Browser doesn't do good, its programmed for Sun's java. Also it was unable to make connection to the internet while this was up and running. Also I got this in my bugs file;

22:13:56 WARNING: TV-Browser was developed for Sun Java and may not run correctly with your Java implementation.

Process dumping was disabled, use DUMPPROC / PROCDUMP to enable it.

After that I had to restart the computer in enable to get rid of the command screen with the Java portion in it.

I had started the thing with one of my favorite command file, its just plain java -jar tvbrowser.jar. After that there seems to be some options, one is to ignore the test if its suns or not. But the second run did give me the libc panic.

Hi Joop, did you double check that dom.ipc.plugins.enabled is false?
Hi Dave,
Yes I did read that, but was set on the wrong foot, got the idea it was fixed, not so. Did set it to false, page loads normally. Case closed :-). Thanks for your patience!

If I run FF10.0.12r2 and go to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Recovering%20important%20data%20from%20an%20old%20profile then the page loads in a short time, cpu spikes but goes down to normal levels. If I do the same with FF17.0.11 latest the page loads but the cpu is going up to the ceiling 99.9% and stays there. Page frozen, matter of fact FF frozen until eCS comes with a popup screen what to kill. I kill the page, ie FF is stopped but still the cpu 99.9%. With popup I see that the plugin container is still active(?).
We had this before, now you can try yourself.

Hi Joop, which version of FF17.0.11? The developers preview or my last upload?
Anyways go to about:config and check how dom.ipc.plugins.enabled is set and if set to true, change to false. I forgot this fix in the first upload.
What may work better is to use webm to watch youtube videos, not all will work and you may have to enable webm.
Downloaded latest FF17.0.11, unzipped it over my previous FF17.0.11 (normally I make a new fresh directory and unzip it there). Didn't do anything more than that. FF direct in Dutch (ie it took over all my settings) and did go to youtube. Tried some films, first time cpu to 99.9% for a while with no action at all, but 2e and up movies direct image. There are some other behaviours. Going to an other tabpage will pause the movie. Also some unclear things. I have in settings not to warn me for updates, won't work because we've eCS right?, but I got a message on top in the tabpage with youtube that some movies won't work because I've to update, right, I've an old flash, but you know my opinion by now about flash, needs to be flushed.

Hello Dave, think your first, the zip file dates 14-06-19 (ymd) on my disk, probably the developers preview. May be it is an idea to put a "D" to the end of the filename so its clear that it is a developers version. I will download latest and see if it will go better. I get more and more trouble on sites with FF10, ie in Google you can't open "apps".

You actually get youtube flash films to play?  Do you have a special version of flash player because most of the youtube offerings require at least version 12 and some now require version 14.
No, I was referring to html movie format, that plays in FF10, flash sucks, on office almost every week an update with the explanation that its faster, better for games and new toys, the real reason is just that they had to fix again a hole or two and replaced it with code which is a quarantee for the next ten holes.

I have FF 17.0.11 running, but when I want to play a youtube film the cpu is going up to 99.99% and stays there. For some reason it can load through, I have to shut it down with tops or so. With FF 10.0.12r2 no problem, instant view. I have the same add-on's installed and they are active in both versions. Can't find any setting which might be set wrong.
Now what?

Joop

For my previous answer I had to pass the password system with a correct password, otherwise I could not log into this forum. There is definite something wrong in 24.3.0 with the password system. Used it only once, exit again cpu 99.99% and on the backgroud a pm password notification for waiting on a password. I don't know what to do, I'm out of options.
I also noticed that on this forum the password stays in the field with 24.3.0, with version 10 whatever that field is cleared.
Because 24.3 remembers its exit it starts with the cpu 99.99%. This sucks.

I started all over again with 24.3. First I got the language install thing. That's going right because there is nothing yet. Next open the xpi file with Dutch. With menu Extra or options, Language set to Dutch. Restart. That's going okay, no hang ups. Next want to open the file "Recovering important data from an old profile.html", cpu go up 99.99% and stays there. With popup terminated. Found on the mozilla os/2 site a list with files and copied that to a text file. With FC/2 copied the files to the Firefox 24.3 home directory. Fired FF and it took a few moments. Had to go through a few install screens with add-ons. It shoots short to cpu 99.99%. Closed FF and nothing stays open on the background. So far so good, but there are a few things, why does the cpu goes 99.99% if I open a html file? I'm going to try again. Also I can't get rid of the tab, even if its only one! That will have an impact on the real estate for the page contents, again a part of the screen lost to useless information.

@Dave, thanks for the link, but its an extra and it should go the way I described, otherwise Mozilla had build in the function given with the download.

On 17.0.11 I don't have a master password installed, installation of the file did go fine. Program followed all the commands without hesitation. On 24.3 I have a master password installed and there is some trouble with it. I could download and install the file, but at some point you have to restart the program. After this point the program hangs, the cpu goes to 99.99% and nothing happen. You can sit and drink your coffee for ever. If I go to popup then I still can see that its waiting on a password.

So 17.0.11 is now Dutch, but no master password and therefore no passwords. In FF 24.3 I have to clean up a directory and somewhere something is set to 1 or something, so restarting FF 24.3 will end in immediate cpu use shooting up to 99.99% and after that see above with that coffee thing.
