Utilities / Re: backup and restore using zip
« on: October 20, 2017, 02:44:41 pm »
7zip does things in its own way which isn't the way we are used to.

Good luck making heads or tails out of that for anything more complicated than compressing a few files for storage.

A manual for the command line version we have appears at https://info.nrao.edu/computing/guide/file-access-and-archiving/7zip/7z-7za-command-line-guide

Setup & Installation / Re: Shadows on the desktop stopped working
« on: October 19, 2017, 01:13:18 am »
Hi Dariusz,

I have seen what you describe once on one machine.  The operator was monitoring some equipment via its web interface using firefox.  After a couple of weeks with firefox up 24/7 firefox just disappeared from the desktop and the machine locked up.  I was called in because OS/2 would start but die when the desktop started.  The client needing to get the computer up and running I pulled the hard disk and replaced it with the mirror disk (cloned OS image with data updated every 5 minutes).  Inspecting the pulled disk we found several things with os2.ini reduced from about 2 MB to a few K and os2sys.ini totally absent, there were also a few other configuration files either truncated or filled with garbage.  After much head scratching we were of the opinion that the long continious use of firefox somehow caused an overwrite of the section of memory where the ini and config files were stored (the fact there was html code in the garbage in the files pointed to this).

Why this happened I can't say because we reformatted the disk and re-imaged it with the standard OS/2 image for that client, replaced the disk and returned the mirror disk and it hasn't happened again in 3 years continuous use - the only difference being that they close firefox at the weekends.

A possible way of tracking down the problem requires you to have a bootable maintenance partition or a bootable cd with some tools on it also it might be a good idea to start with running memtest from a bootable cd.

Run your main system for a few days then shut down, reboot using the maintenance partition and have a look at the ini files in the main OS2 directory (you will need an ini editor to see what there is in them) and check for any obvious garbage.  If there is garbage there, depending on what it is, it might indicate what program and/or dll is causing the problem.  If you can pin that down you are well on the way to solving the problem.

Neil, I would suggest that you run cleanini.exe /c /restart from a command window with the system working.  Once it has done its thing it will tell you what it did and write a full log to the root of the boot drive - it also makes a backup of the ini files.

This is what we (when I ran the company) did once a week on all systems for the past 20 odd years.

Xfix will also run from a working system and if you use the 'write back to os2eys.ini' in the 'xfix' menu dropdown there should not be any problems.  The best thing to do is let it 'find invalid' (number shown at the bottom of the window) then 'select all invalid'.  Once that is done, scroll down through them just to see what is there, then use mb2 to select 'delete' - this will mark them for deletion but they will only be deleted when you select 'write back to os2sts.ini' and even then you will get warning messages.

After you have made changes to the ini files (they are held in memory) you should restart the desktop to write them back to disk.

All of the ini cleaners I mentioned will do that automatically with a switch setting.  Xfix does that from the dropdown menu.

Hi Dariusz,

That sort of ini problem generally appears when the ini files become over full with crud (where programs write to the ini files but don't clean up after themselves).

When was the last time you ran an ini cleaner like Cleanini or Checkini from wptools or Xfix included in Xworkplace?  Depending on what you are doing you may need to run of then once a week.

Mail-News / Re: PMMail: 2.00.xx to 3.22 migration...what to do?
« on: October 13, 2017, 09:55:05 pm »
Have you tried just copying the folders over to your new install rather than running the migration tool?  You might need to re-index the folders after.

I don't know if this would work but since you have a backup it shouldn't be a problem to try and if it does work you are up and running.

Article Discussions / Re: Sponsorship needed for new OS/2 web browser
« on: October 12, 2017, 02:05:20 am »
In my opinion chrome browser should be taken behind the barn and shot.  It does not have the ability to use essential addons like noscript and adblock+.  After all it is a google invention and google lives by adds on web pages.

Maybe they should look at waterfox which is associated with firefox but has had all of the slurping and tracking bits removed.  It was forked by a 16 year old a few years ago.  I have been moving my friends that insist on using windows over to it and they are all more than happy with it - I even have a friend with iOS using it rather than safari.  It also works well on linux.

Just mt 2 cents worth.

What's beyond me is that we have native archive programs to get a zip file. Why we have to use 7zip is not clear. The negative thing is that it is a ported nix program. Now I'm willing to install that, but after the download of 7zip you are confronted with the next problem. All documentation in the ported zip file are for nix systems, not a word about OS/2-eCS. The files in this distribution for OS/2-eCS are not the same as for nix systems. So the documentation fails because only nix files are mentioned. The next hurdle is that I have to translate everything into my language, most of the times that goes okay, but if things are not even mentioned in the English manual things get complicated.
I can understand that we port some programs from nix or even windows. But more and more I get the idea we just have to migrate to nix stuff.

I can live with some ported things BUT there should be either a working man reader (forwards, backwards change text size etc.) or the man pages should be supplied as simple text files or PDF files if they require to keep the formatting.

I also agree with Joop.  They ported 7zip as a command line program, which I assume it is in the nix world, but we usually work in a GUI environment so would expect a GUI front end for both zipping and unzipping aka the windows version of 7z.

rant over for tonight.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB questions
« on: October 06, 2017, 07:06:06 pm »
After several tests I now know that anything that runs through an ASMedia chip (SATA and USB3) does not work with OS/2.

Some generic USB3 sockets do fall back to using USB2 on OS/2 so all is not quite lost but we do have to pick and chose what we use but that has always been so from the days of OS/2 v2.1.

Thanks to all.

The main reason that I was interested in seeing how the Corsair keyboards worked is because they have mechanical 'clickey' keys not the rubber pads of the Logitech and other keyboards. I have a couple of Logitech keyboards that I use most of the time.  They have extra keys for e-mail etc that work with Win95Key mapping them so there might be hope for the K95 extra keys if I can get at them.

My standard 'mouse' is the Kensington Orbit optical trackball (USB) and has been for years (I started using trackballs back in the 60s in radar control and have used them ever since).  I have one computer where I have to use a USB to PS/2 converter for the trackball, just plugging it into a USB port gives a null response (the converter was packaged with the early Kensington trackballs).

My main concern is the compatibility of out USB drivers especially if anyone wants to use modern equipment, motherboards, portable drives - HD and DVD, etc in view of the fact that almost all laptops available here only have USB3 ports.

As a side note all my computers have AMD processors from 2 to 4 cores but I'm building one with a Ryzen 8 core processor for a friend that is into gaming and will test ArcaOS on it before I hand it over.

Setup & Installation / USB questions
« on: October 03, 2017, 10:28:48 pm »
Today I was able to try a couple of high end Corsair USB keyboards, K55 and K95, on my ArcaOS ITX build and an older WSeB build plus a win7 laptop for comparison.

The K55 is seen by USBRes and gives a device report BUT does not work - no output at all. The corsair-K55-keyboard.txt is the USB data from a windows computer and the other is the device report from USBRes.

The K95 is seen by USBRes and partly works if set to legacy mode - the 18 extra function keys are not seen on os2.  The corsair-k95-keyboard.txt is the USBRes output (couldn't get the win USB output not enough usb ports on the laptop).

I was also able to see a Mini ITX board that takes an AMD Ryzen CPU/APU but it has a problem - only USB3 ports.  I also noticed that all the laptops available likewise only have USB3 ports.

All this raises the question, just how compatible are our USB drivers?  I don't want to shell out several hundred euros for an ITX board and processor only to find it can only be used with windows.

I have a couple of AMD based ITX boards that have both USB2 and USB3 ports and am prepared to run any tests should they be required

I wonder if 'sort by real name' and 'always maintain sort order' are in conflict.

The 'always maintain sort order' is the first thing I switch off in any new install.  It started causing problems with our AMD systems way back and it still annoys me to this day.

Applications / Windowed win 16 session

Has anyone got a windowed win 16 session to run on ArcaOS with the panorama driver?

I have no problems on my Warp 4.52 installs with SNAP but I just can't get it to work on ArcaOS/panorama.

« on: September 24, 2017, 04:42:56 pm »
No problems here with FF 38.8 although it does go to 'lite mode' because of an 'unsupported browser'.

That being said even the lite mode maps are good and the satellite overlay works without problems.

@Neil, did you change the browser information string to present it as a different browser?  If so that might be the cause of the problem.
