I also disagree with the idea of punishing users who don't subscribe. I realize that there are people who think so, and I think they should keep that thought to themselves. Making the OS/2 community smaller isn't going to help. It's also crappy marketing.

But Arca Noae policy does not have to be described in that way. Better to say you can on one hand subscribe all the time or on the other hand, you can buy ArcaOS and then resubscribe when you need updates. Arca Noae has priced this so they don't lose money, and now each user can choose the policy that is best for their circumstances.

If you refresh your machines once every four years, the re subscription fee is less than the cumulative subscription fees. Thus, this policy actually rewards non-subscribers.

Internet / Re: Curious what the problem is making new firefox versions.
« on: December 20, 2020, 04:23:37 pm »
I may be wandering off-topic, but if the runtime libraries supporting Chromium (or even Firefox) fail gracefully when running out of memory and the applications behave well when receiving an out of resources error, we might function pretty well in the future.

I like the Wiki for its hardware and software suggestions.

An enhancement for the Wiki would be for laptops and desktops that are listed to support OS/2, eComStation or ArcaOS that they should run a program to scan the useful things about the computer and generate the technical parts of a Wiki page. This would improve reports and make this a better resource for someone to select a new computer.

This is a perfect computer for ArcaOS.

How should I know, I don't use those things.

Hardware / Re: What happened to the hardware database on ecomstation.ru?
« on: December 13, 2020, 04:22:17 pm »
You could use the one at OS/2 World.

https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Hardware

I found the one at eComStation.ru a bit limited because the entries were not dated, and much of the hardware was no longer available. I'm sorry its gone, I suppose.

Applications / Lotus WordPro document alignment
« on: December 09, 2020, 03:56:02 pm »
I have a lot of Lotus WordPro documents to run the business. The computers in the business run a mix of MCP 2, eCS and ArcaOS.

On some computers, the Lotus WordPro documents are out of alignment. Text that used to fit on a line wraps to a new line.

I think I've tracked this down to a difference in printer drivers. If the driver is LASERJET.HP Laserjet 4, then the document is formatted correctly. If the driver is anything else, for example PSPRINT.HP Color Laserjet Pro M252, or LASERJET.HP Color Laserjet, then some text will be wrapped.

I've attached the Lotus WordPro file to this message. I had to rename the file to .DOC because OS/2 World does not permit .LWP attachments and erases the message if you try.

Setup & Installation / Re: Bipra usb hdd - how to make partitions?
« on: December 08, 2020, 03:33:16 pm »
Boot into the installer, and mount the drive. Run DiskUtil, and wipe the drive. Reboot the installer, and run DiskUtil again. If no problems are found, exit DiskUtil and run MiniLVM and create any partitions you like.

Other operating systems will also be able to use a disk prepared in this way.

Storage / Re: FAT32 - Netlabs or AN?
« on: December 07, 2020, 03:42:25 pm »
I was transferring photos from my iPhone using FileBrowser and a Samba share on my OS/2 computer, but I now use iCloud running in the Firefox 45 browser to download the photos.

In theory, I should be able to configure Dropbox to make the photos available on the OS/2 desktop as drive through the NetDrive Dropbox plug-in, but it's a lot of configuring, and iCloud works well enough.

Setup & Installation / Re: Odd problem with USB 3 driver
« on: November 24, 2020, 06:03:18 am »

Neil, so far I am unable to say what triggers it.  I can do the same thing any number of times but one will trigger it.
BTW what are you using on your phone that lets you shut down the computer (I have VNC server on the main box to connect to my Linux boxes)

I use RealVNC. I'm on iOS, but I think they have Android, too. Is running VNC on the main server a security risk?

Yes. I'm seeing it too. Copy one large file to a marginal USB thumb drive and it's likely to occur. I have not fully worked out the test scenario, which I like to do before I submit a bug report.

I run VNC server so I can grab my phone and shut down the machine safely after the keyboard and mouse stop working.

Applications / Re: ArcaOS kernel 202 and Firefox
« on: November 22, 2020, 12:32:05 am »
100% true you can load DLL's high and unload them and the memory is released so mozturbo for that purpose is no longer needed.

Roderick

So I still will need to mark the Mozilla DLLs to load high, but I no longer need mozturbo or anturbo. I hope this helps. Managing all the turbos was difficult if running two versions of Firefox, for example.

Applications / ArcaOS kernel 202 and Firefox

Arca Noae has released a new kernel, probably to support the new web browser.

Is it possible that the new kernel fix makes it unnecessary to run FFTurbo, because memory is now released on exit?

Setup & Installation / Re: How to install Firefox
« on: November 17, 2020, 09:40:51 pm »
RPM_REQUIREMENTS is incomplete.

I can run Firefox afterward, but not Thunderbird. I had to also use ANPM to install libvpx-legacy-2 and libvpx-legacy-4

The firefox readme would make a good web page for the product.

The MozTurbo installation should be handled with care. Depending on the version of ArcaOS, there may already be one in \sys\apps\anturbo

Thanks for the idea about the Firefox RPM. I forgot about that. So I tried to find it. Unluckily, I tried this:

Where%u2019s the new Firefox?

We%u2019ve received a few inquiries regarding the availability of Firefox 45.9 ESR. Please note that we have not yet released Firefox 45 due to some final performance and stability issues which we are working hard to address. Please be patient, and we hope to have a release for general availability in the very near future.

I tried ANPM, but no Firefox there. There is firefox-highmem from bitwise.

The purpose of this utility is to load Firefox DLLs in the upper meomry arena.

I remember there was going to be a secure repository, but I can't remember where it is. In any case, there should be a way to install Firefox even for those without a subscription.

Thanks, Dave for uploading Firefox to Hobbes. This is the URL for the pentium M version in incoming, until it moves to a more conventional spot.

https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/incoming/firefox-45.9.0.en-US.os2-Pentium-m-9.9.2-08112020.zip

This zip file has the excellent readme file, so the thread is going well from my point of view. This Firefox build is also newer than the one in ArcaOS 5.0.6.

[Edit: changed URL to Pentium-M version] :)

Which version of Arca Noae? I assume one that shipped with FF38ESR. Just unzip 45.9ESR into its own directory and use ANPM to update everything and install Hunspell and optionally the FFmpeg libs and create a program object for it.
Ideally mark the Firefox DLLs high and install ffturbo including creating a program object that has cmd.exe as the program, /c detach path\to\ffturbo -l -p in the parameters and the working directory pointing to where ffturbo is installed.

Is 45.9ESR hosted someplace? I can put your instructions on a webpage and host the Firefox binary if no one else has done it.
