Hi mauro

Copy danis506.add and daniatap.flt to [BootDrive]:\os2\boot

Open [BootDrive]:\config.sys and add the following 2 lines

BASEDEV=DANIS506.ADD /!BIOS
BASEDEV=DANIATAP.FLT

then REM the start of these lines if they exist

BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
BASEDEV=IBMATAPI.FLT
BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT

Save config.sys

Reboot

Test DFSee

Hi Martin

I get the same result with lpinfo -m when the cups daemon has not been started.
Is the cups daemon in the(a) Startup folder?

If "No" simply start cups daemon by doubleclicking [UnixRoot]:\usr\sbin\cupsd.exe

Then retry lpinfo -m

Hi Martin

Presuming cups is successfully installed is the cups daemon running?

Is the printer local or network? - and powered on?

Hi mauro

Might be worth simply deleting the contents of the dfsee directory and then unzipping(?) the latest version into that directory.

What the error seems to be saying is that the loaded disk driver IBM1S506.ADD does not understand whatever command from dfsee. When starting dfsee it seems that disk(s) get read for partition info so that is probably the failing bit. Strange...
What version (how old) is the IBM1S506.ADD in use? - might be worth trying danis506 as I recall that overcame some of the early IBM1S506 deficiencies.

Hi All

Finally found the option to turn off HT - sorry, SMT in the MSI B450PRO mainboard BIOS.

I have to say there is not a lot of difference between SMT enabled and disabled... Seamonkey and OpenOffice apps seem to start a little quicker with SMT enabled... Dooble is still unstable, liable to hang the system... WPS seems to trundle along at about the same speed.

Just for a comparison: I dug an old system out of the cupboard, connected it up and powered it on. Slower bootup, WPS runs at close to the same speed as the Ryzen5, apps are a little slower to load. Old system is based on a Jetway 663AS Ultra with AMD XP2000+ cpu, 1Gb RAM and IDE disks running eCS2.1

I think Lars may be onto something when he states: "What this all leads to is that the WPS is actually performing better if you have less CPU cores and not more."

Hi Lars

No change in the number of threads (32) displayed after pressing/releasing F5 continually for around 15 seconds, 40 key presses.

Hi Lars

Either F5 does not "Refresh" or doing so does not cause any problems with the Ryzen5 5600G with SMT enabled - TOP does not show any extra pmshell entries at all, just the usual 2 (WPS and Warpcenter). Possibly 300+ objects in a directory is not enough to cause the problem ...

Hi Doug

Been hunting around and found that AMD doesn't have HyperThreading (HT), AMD's tech is called Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT).

SMT seems to do the same job as HT ...

Seems to work fine with ArcaOS here so will continue using it  :-)

Hi Martin

Seamonkey works fine, no system freezes so I would expect Firefox to also work without system freezes.

Hi All

I have yet to discover how to turn off Hyper Threading with my MSI B450PRO mainboard / AMD Ryzen5 cpu - 6 cores but 12 "processors" reported by system POST.

Possibly I need to run Windows, install some AMD cpu control software...

Anyway, since installing 5.1.0 a few months back (early September) the only system freezes I get are when using Dooble (QT5) and that, from what I can gather in other discussions about Dooble, is likely caused by the qt code - and Dooble behaves exactly the same on an AMD FX4300 based system which most definitely does not have hyper threading.

My conclusion: AMD and Intel Hyper Threading seem to differ slightly and it could be worth trying Hyper Threading on AMD cpu based systems.

Hi Richard

An alternative to c and rexx is pascal - very similar to c.

WDSibyl is a fairly good RAD system, similar to Delphi, and may be of interest https://wdsibyl.org/en/

Hi Andrew

Network Attached Storage

Very useful if running a small network at home as all devices can be setup to use that for backups.

Probably a bit OTT (Over The Top) for your current needs ...

Hi

Just spotted something called MAID on the ArcaNoae website and thought it may be an alternative gui tool for rexx

Hi Dariusz

Any ideas where WarpCenter hides it's font selection??? That's the only remaining piece of getting to a suitable display configuration for my OS/2 box...tried the old "drag & drop" font, but that didn't stick.

Just a thought... Have you tried ft-240.exe? - the old Innotek Font Engine software.
I think it does a good job of improving Warp4/eCS/ArcaOS dismal text display but does require user configuration after installation:

Open Registry Editor to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Innotek -> Innotek Font Engine -> Applications

Change any of the existing Applications, eg firefox.exe, to pmshell.exe, double check that it has an Enabled value of 1, delete all other Applications (the software involved no longer uses IFE), close Registry Editor, Reboot to a Desktop and WarpCenter with better text display.

You are still stuck with the same font on WarpCenter but at least it looks better and is more legible.

Pete
