Hardware / Re: OS/2 on Virtualbox with 8 COM ports

Hi Kumar, welcome to the forum.

I'm Martin Iturbide, the moderator of this forum and OS2World newsmaster.

eComStation seems to be no longer maintained, we haven't hear any news from that product and company since 2014. Today the OS/2 community is using a different OS/2 OEM OS called ArcaOS (Based in OS/2 Warp 4.52). ArcaOS is being actively developed and it is being sold to individuals and corporations that has the need to use OS/2 on modern machines. I would suggest you to contact Lewis Rosenthal from Arca Noae (company that created ArcaOS) and talk with him about the industrial necessity for OS/2 and serial multi port pci cards for industrial use under this OS.

My opinions are from a community point of view, and on this case, it is not commercial. I would prefer an open source driver for the modern PCI-e Multiport serial adapter and it possible can be spin off from some other open source drivers. I would love to have some reports that the Axxon multiport modern PCI-e serial adapter works on ArcaOS, but I think it will depend on the demand that you may get with this platform. Anyway, if you need any information about the platform we can help you here, as long as our time and knowledge are able to.

General Discussion / Re: Installing eCS on a EEEPC 701 with USB
« on: May 05, 2021, 08:22:20 pm »
Hi Jacopo Del Vivo, welcome to the OS2World forum.

For what I know, I never know about a procedure to install eCS (eComStation) from an USB Flash drive. On those days, it was always needed a DVD drive to install the OS. There were some other technique to clone the HDD image from an installed machine to other one.

Today, I use ArcaOS 5.0.6 and I install it from a USB flash drive, since that OEM version of OS/2 has formal support for it.

I never installed eCS from an USB flash drive, I don't have much experience with Rufus. I don't even remember correctly if the latest version of eCS, 2.2 beta II, (December 2013) was able to boot from an USB DVD drive. Also, we haven't get any news about eComStation and its company since 2014.

If someone else has some experience, please let us know.

I'm also trying "ALWALTFX" for the fun of it. I'm also having problem understand what some of feature does, like "Key enhance". I will look for some documentation.

If someone else want to jump in with his favorite desktop enhancement and what consider it is the best feature, just jump it. There is not right or wrong answers, since "desktop enhancement" sometimes is a personal taste thing :)

I'm sure if it installed correctly. I was able to see the "drives" page enhanced with the icons on the window (the toolbar). But the rexx gadgets are not working.

Anyways it is interesting. I found that some things of wps-wizard can be good to reuse in some project to improve the WPS.

"cairo146.dll" on the sys/dll directory did the trick to let me install wps-wizard. I'm rebooting now to see if it worked.

I have Cairo 1.12.18 installed from the rpm. (cairo2.dll, cairos2.dll).
I noticed that WPSWIZZ.DLL asks for "cairo146.dll"  (using pmdll). I will check if I can find it from some old cairo package.

oops. I'm merging you post here.

Alright, this discussion is moved from the thread Martin started in the Application Forum: Desktop Enhancements for WPS.

My idea is: create a "Most Recently Opened Documents" object which literally shows a list of documents (should have a user adjustable setting to control how many are shown) there were most recently opened.
This should provide an easy way to re-open the same doc I had just looked at, withouth me having to go looking for it once again.

I suppose this could be a Folder like object, but it really would not have any persistent objects (the previously opened Documents) present there, instead maybe shadows could represent each one?

High level though, my thinking is as follows:

1) Intercept any application 'Open File' action at the OS level (so literally having some kind of a daemon that watches to see what files are being opened)
- user settings would possible filter this down to only a certain sub-set of applications
- this daemon would keep track the "most recently x opened" files, as per the user's settings

2) Show the user a dynamically maintained list, where one would simply interact with the object using the default system behavious (so rely on Associations, etc.)
- the "container" object that would allow the user to select such a file would be either a purposely built own class object, or perhaps a folder where the objects themselves would be represented as SHADOWs - idea being to re-use as much of the underlying OS structure, and therefore functionality, as possible

My goal was very similiar to what Lars' thinking is: use as little NEW code as possible, rely on existing platform / OS infrastructure to handle much of the lifting.

Thus my original question: what would be best suited to serve as that "container object"? In parallel to that, what are the current APIs that I could use to monitor the current files that are opened?

Andi, maybe as you suggested that intercepting DosFileClose would allow me to build that dynamic list of files that have been opened...that list would continue to be purned as per user settings and filters, which in theory should give us a workable solution.

Use Case
Let's say I only care about PDF files. I have them all over the place, my NAS box in particular...and I just do not feel like going through the full directory/path navigation each and every time I need to open one up. This to me is very real you guys...I moved our documents from the OS/2 box onto the NAS some tiem ago, we now have a single centralized DOC repo for the full house...but that requires me to do a hell of a lot more mouse clicking to just get to the file I want! lol

Hi Lars.

You are right. I was using the wrong VM withtout usb.ids and I let myself guide on the error message.
It worked now with usb.ids on /mptn/etc and it had installed.

Hi Lars

I also noticed that "hwman16.wpi" installer is also searching for usb.ids on the path or libpath. I think that for a future version it will need to be changed (or include) the %ETC% directory to maintain the same logic.

what WPS class would need to be extended/replaced in order to create a "Most Recently Opened Documents" object which literally shows a list of documents (should have a user adjustable setting to control how many are shown) there were most recently opened.
...that's a good question.  ;D

Applications / Desktop Enhancement for WPS
« on: May 02, 2021, 06:48:33 pm »

I want to test some of the old desktop enhancements tools on ArcaOS 5.0.6 VMs. This can be very experimental and it make break the WPS, but this is why I'm using a test VMs.

1) I want to try WPS-Wizard, which I know it is very experimental.
But I can not install it. The install.cmd procedure can not register CWObject on ArcaOS 5.0.6 WPS.

I get:
Current directory is C:\Programs\wpswizard

Registering class CWWizzSettings...
Registering class CWMenuFolder...
Registering class CWLaunchArea...
Registering class CWObject...

Error while registering class CWObject
Deregistering class CWWizzSettings
Deregistering class CWLaunchArea
Deregistering class CWMenuFolder

An error occured. WPS-Wizard is not installed properly.

Use a tool like checkini to check/repair your INI files.

Press <ENTER> to quit.

I did a "chechkini /c /r" restarted the WPS, but I still can not install and register the class.

2) I want to try Dialog Enhancer. There is this installer on hobbes. But I can not install it. The installer says it can not find the .txt files that are already there.  I also don't understand how it is supposed to apply the .DAT updates of it.  (os2site)

Any tips are welcome.

Off Topic discussions / Image upscaling with AI
« on: May 01, 2021, 02:50:55 am »

Just as a funny footnote. I had been upscaling some old OS/2 images with the free online tools available with AI.
For example this illustration that used to be 559x416 to 2236x1660
Both versions are here:

I also was playing with some OS/2 logos that were available on the web and were very small.

Some people don't like it, but it is just for fun. Maybe I should try the video upscaling tools for some old OS/2 videos ;)

I wish I could contact Matt Smith from Prominare, to request his software to turn open source or at least AS IS Freeware.
But Matt Smith is also the name of a Dr. Who actor, which make it harder to find him on online.
