While its a free world a lot of people in my opinion take the free development of BWW simply for granted.
As I mentioned in my Warpstock US presentation we checked the logs of the Netlabs RPM server.
In about one month (during the summer break). We had about 600 unique IP addresses connect with Arca Noae Package Manager to download updates. Knowing that by far not everybody uses ANPM on a daily basis that gives a much better inside in the private users using OS/2/ArcaOS. Its a bigger number then we thought it is.

Please Roderick, remove this from your speech. It sounds like Microsoft counting the statistics of MS Office piracy and crying out loud they could be making more money.

The RPM server statistics are not potential donators, if you ever think about charging money for the libraries on the netlabs RPM it will backfire. It may get money the first two months and later squeeze more people out of the community. That is called "bread for today, hunger for tomorrow" in simple words. In my experience only desperate salesman uses that strategy to cash their check at the end of the month and burn the customer for any future relationship within the company.

The donations are what they are, and I don't like treating the OS/2 community members as cheapo bastards living at the expense of software developers. It is better to inspire people to support the project by showing how important it is for our community and how much progress had Bitwise showed, instead of insulting the community saying that they haven't given enough.

The modern browser is an important project for the community and a lot of people had chipped in knowing that Bitwise can deliver. I can only suggest to change your speech into something more positive and don't get frustrated.

Hi

Just in case to install those manually you can try:
 "yum install <full file name.rpm>"

Or from ANPM:
 Manage->YUM Tools->"Install Package from file..."

This are the package I created:

- AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- CleanINI-0.55-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- Diunpack-3.04B-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- KillFold-1.0-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- LX2Dump-1.03-1.oc00.i686.rpm
-  Larsen_Commander-1.6_M3-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- PMDLL-2.12-1.oc00.i686.rpm (not much needed since it is included on ArcaOS)
- PMDiff-4.0c-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- PMKill-1.0-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- ToLower-1.1-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- VisPro-REXX-Runtime-3.1-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- WatchDog-1.0-1.oc00.i686.rpm
- ePDF-2.99-1.oc00.i686.rpm

Hi Wim

This is what I get:

webcam.exe /a24000:
Code: [Select]
[X:\HOME\DOWNLOADS\WEBCAM00-20210120]webcam.exe /a24000
started.
format:mjpg
 acquire webcam
 set configuration
 negotiate video format
/a server (audio) On-Line.
 obtain video format
 commit video format
 set video alt interface
 set audio frequency
 starting iso video
 set audio mike volume
 set audio alt interface
 starting iso audio
[00000057]
obtain audio error.
wmaudio /a1 /v30
Quote
[X:\HOME\DOWNLOADS\WEBCAM00-20210120]wmaudio /a1 /v30
started.
 opening audio input pipe
 opening ampmixer device
 informing dart being used
 allocating dart buffers
 creating event semaphore
 setting ampmixer volume

Is it supposed to be enabled there?

If I try record.exe
Code: [Select]
[X:\HOME\DOWNLOADS\AUDREC02]record /a1
started.
 opening ampmixer device
 informing dart being used
 allocating dart buffers
 creating event semaphore
 opening audio output file
 writing audio output file
[00000280]
 writing audio output file
 closing audio output file
 closing event semaphore
 deallocating dart buffers
 informing dart use ended
 closing ampmixer device
stopped.

No way to record audio yet.

I don't know what "strange mood"  does this webcam produce that I can not produce the USB report, not with lsusb and not with "USB Device Monitor".

Hi

Having an OS/2 (ArcaOS or eCS) to boot from an USB device was always on my wishlist but I never finished my testing. There was this discussion some years ago. "Already there: a bootable OS/2 Stick - FreeOS2Loader".

Maybe someday I will try that again.

Applications / Creating some apps RPM packages
« on: February 13, 2021, 05:07:12 pm »
Hi

I had been creating some simple rpm packages for some OS/2 utilities that we discussed on the forum.  The idea for me is to have, eventually, a very simple and fast to install the tools that are commonly used in ArcaOS.

By learning how to make that packages, I checked other samples, and there some choices that sometimes had to be done in file locations (because of the FHS thing) like:
- Where to put HLP files ? - I choose "/@unixroot/usr/share/os2/help"
- Where to put the TXT files? - I choose "@unixroot/usr/share/doc/%{name}"
This was based on some other samples I checked.

I have them here for the moment: https://archive.org/download/rpm-warp-samples

Those are far from perfect, but I hope someday they can be improved and put no some RPM server.

Suggestions are always welcome.

Hardware / Re: OS/2 on Virtualbox with 8 COM ports
« on: February 12, 2021, 07:34:39 pm »
Hi

For what I see on the config.sys, I don't recognize this two folders, D:\NSC\DLL and D:\PEP\DLL. I guess those are the one with the specialized application for the machine.

The "D:\IBMI18N" is supposed to be the older "IBM I18N Toolkit" (international localization). Can it be possible that the specialized software has a dependency of that toolkit version?

Hardware / Re: OS/2 on Virtualbox with 8 COM ports

Hi Daniele.

For what I understand, on this industrial machine,  you have three PCs with OS/2 Warp 4, with network connection (ethernet), and 8 serial ports on each machine and these 8 serial ports are connected to the PCs with ISA cards.

I think it will be hard to VBox to emulate the 8 COM serial ports.

Backup everything. Clone the hard drives of each three machines.  (Possible you already did that).

It will be interesting to know why you want to have OS/2 virtualized there over Windows. Is there some functionality that you don't know how to use on OS/2, like using USB flash drives to extract files or VNC for remote control? Or is it that you are missing the OS/2 installer CDs? or is it that OS/2 is different to install?

Possible solutions with bare metal (real hardware) are:

1) OS/2 Warp 4.52. Since it seems you didn't upgrade any of the PCs to newer maiboards (you have that old ISA cards that you need for the 8 serial ports).  You can install OS/2 Warp 4.52 from the CD-ROM, get USB support (maybe for a flash drive), and copy the required software for this machine from the clones Warp 4.

OS/2 Warp 4.52 will save you some time with all the fixpacks for Warp 4.

2) Buy ArcaOS and it will save you also too much trouble with the OS/2 Warp installation process and it will install more actual tools and drivers (network). Since it is the same OS/2 kernel is almost sure that every driver and software will run. To install ArcaOS you need a DVD drive, or the capacity to boot from the USB port.

It would be very awesome if you can share the config.sys file (upload it as config.txt) too see if there is any special driver or specific thing for that machine we can point out.

I would love to be in Italy to check out that machine !!!! ;D

Programming / Re: RPM Package Creation - Dependencies
« on: February 11, 2021, 09:00:04 pm »
Hi

I think I find it, thanks to Tellie for the tips.

I added
"%define __requires_exclude wptools.dll"
Now it does not ask for that DLL the rpm installer.

Hi Daniele

I would love too know more about the industrial machine that you are using with OS/2. I want to document the industrial solutions on the OS2World wiki. Type of machinery, Machine models and even pictures are welcome.

About a reply to your question, I also think it may be hard to virtualize OS/2 with 8 COM ports, but you may check some other VirtualBox forum when they play with the idea of adding Serial USB adapters. But it will require a lot of experimentation from your side.

It may be interesting to try ArcaOS on that type of machinery (with real hardware) and remain using the OS/2 software with the 8 serial ports. I think that for the kind of industrial business they run, a license of ArcaOS business will not be that much.

My only advice is to please, save a copy of the OS/2 HDD image while you experiment, some of the OS/2 software and drivers it has may be hard to find. It may be good to have some different hard drives on that machine to experiment.

Programming / [SOLVED] RPM Package Creation - Dependencies
« on: February 11, 2021, 02:19:41 am »
Hi.

I tried to create a RPM package for AssoEdit.  Everything seems fine, with the exception that I do not want to include WPTOOLS.DLL since it is already bundled in ArcaOS.

The issue is when I run the RPM installer.

Quote
[C:\HOME\RPMBUILD\RPMS\I686]yum install AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686.rpm
Setting up Install Process
Examining AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686.rpm: AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686
Marking AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686.rpm to be installed
Resolving Dependencies
--> Running transaction check
---> Package AssoEdit.i686 0:2.1.2-1.oc00 will be installed
--> Processing Dependency: wptools.dll for package: AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Package: AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686 (/AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686)
           Requires: wptools.dll
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Yes it asks for wptools.dll, even if it is not a requirements on the specs file.
Quote
Error: Package: AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686 (/AssoEdit-2.1.2-1.oc00.i686)
           Requires: wptools.dll

It makes me think that rpm is actually looking for the dependencies of the executable assoedit.exe file which was unexpected for me.

Does somebody knows how to make that the RPM package "compile" ignore that dependency?

Hardware / Re: ArcaOS 5.0.6 - JFS DOSCALL1.DLL - Loving Trap.
« on: February 10, 2021, 03:10:05 pm »
Thanks for the answers.
Since the boot was also trapping on Alt+F1 boot, I think the fastest way was to reinstall the machine. All important files were backup.

I'm setting up the machine again.

Hardware / ArcaOS 5.0.6 - JFS DOSCALL1.DLL - Loving Trap.
« on: February 09, 2021, 08:43:16 pm »
Hi

I got this JFS trap on an ArcaOS 5.0.6 running on a Thinkpad L420. It happens after loading JFS.IFS.  I call it "loving" because the little heart  ;D

I'm not exactly sure what happened to produce this trap. I did installed the latest ACPI rebooted, and later the latest Kernel on ArcaOS 5.0.6.

I can reinstall without issues, but I'm just posting it just in case someone may had a similar issue on the past.
Will it be that DOSCALL1.DLL got corrupted in some way?

Setup & Installation / Re: Intel nuc
« on: February 09, 2021, 06:49:43 pm »
Hi Rick

I haven't get any report about an Intel NUC.
My guess is that the install should work and ArcaOS should run with BIOS compatibility ON, if the M.2. SSD Card is SATA, or if it is used with a SATA HDD.
Wifi will not work. But I'm still not sure about the video output, if all ports will work or only Mini DVI.

Alex reported something... maybe similar. "ASUS VivoMini VC66 Mini PC"
