I know I should probably (RTFM), but I have never really understood what extended associations are in XWP.  Could someone simply explain them to me?  I believe part of the problem with extended associations is that they are poorly understood by the average user such as myself.

By the way, I have been using this beta and it appears to work great.  Rich has done a great job fixing a lot of the bugs with this beta.

Hallo,

I have uploaded to Hobbes version 5.0 of VFDISK.SYS. It contains a fix so that the FAT12/FAT16 support that comes with the new FAT32.IFS can peacefully coexist with VFDISK.SYS.

VFDISK.SYS is a device driver to emulate floppy media.

Lars

Works good.  One thing I noticed is that it shows as version 4.0 on bootup.  I had no problem installing WPS Security with this driver installed.  Before installing it, I had to direct WPS Security install to a FAT32 drive.  It took me a while to figure this out because the program kept looking for a fat boot disk.

Storage / Re: oddities with OS2AHCI version 2.04

A quick side question,

what size is the ahci-2.04.exe package? I see the latest version is a lot smaller, I haven't been able to install it as the file is corrupt so after a couple of weeks I have just re downloaded it but it still shows as corrupt, unable to run the exe or extract the files.

252988         342  ahci-2.03.exe
 98876           0  ahci-2.04.exe

Are you using XWP with turbo folders enabled?  When installing with FM/2 and Filestar 2, my wpi would not install because the WPS default thought they were text files and was trying to read them as text files.  I disabled Turbo folders and all WPIs and EXEs installed nicely.

Yes, USB is necessary since most usb devices are now 3.0.  I am wondering about the encryption that these devices demand that you do.  Don't do the encryption and the drive is useless.  I was also wondering about WIFI.  This is something I have been waiting for a long time.

I had one last idea for a boot logo.  It involved modifying one of the boot logos.  I have attached it.

Applications / Toying with the folder concept
« on: December 27, 2017, 03:50:01 am »
I had an idea and thought I would see what it looked like.  Instead of a big folder, a small folder icon like the XWP shadow icon is used.  Then an actual icon of the product or information concept icon is used.  I had to modify the icons I used.

The easiest way would be to have a folder icon that appears when a folder is present, just like a XWP shadow.  I am not asking that this be done.  This is just an ideal I am testing.  I have attached a picture of my desktop.

The attached is probably my last XWP boot logo.  It has been a fun learning experience.  If Rich finds anything worth while in any of my shadow pointers or boot logos, he is welcome to use them.

I have attached a new transparent boot logo. See what you think.  This is far more advanced than the others I have uploaded. This has been a learning experience.

I played around with making XWP Boot Logos and have them attached to this post.  I learned quite a bit.

First, transparency does not work for all logos.  As a result, special care must be taken when making the bitmap logo.

Second, as near as I can tell, there is no size limitation on the bitmap.

Third, both Windows and Os/2 bitmaps can be used.

What looks good as a transparency may not look good as a blow up and vise versa.

These logos are named beginning with a BU_ for Blow-up or T_ for transparency.  The transparent ones also have green borders for easy identification when selecting.

I had to reupload it again.  I found one bitmap that sneaked by my quick testing.

One other problem, when icons are embedded in an application, is that hi-colour icons get corrupted if fed through lxlite. With Mozilla, we had to switch to 8 colour icons IIRC when we switched to linking with wlink and using lxlite to strip/compress the binaries.

Dave

You don't use bitmaps for the embedded graphics?  I know programs like FM/2 and Filstar 2 use embedded bmps.

I created some new XWP logos a few years back.  When I have time I will upload them and see what people think.

The picture
I cannot see any reason to use  24bit/Pixel for 16x16 sized icons? And for 80% of 20x20 sized icons it would be questionable.

It depends on the intended audience. For desktop usage OS/2 2.x recommends 5 different units (covered by the mentioned Icon Editor) and OS/2 Warp adds 2 additional units. It should follow the CUA style guide. It doesn't differ much from Mac, Motif or Windows.

The problem occurs when the picture is pasted to the 16x16 and 20x20.  If that color is not in the palette, some off the wall color or colors are used.  Using 24bit, icon editor has no problem rendering the correct color(s).   However, you are correct in that it might much simplier to make the smaller icons with few colors.

Rich

I created these icons anywhere from 4 to 7 years ago.  I haven't really done anything since until I started messing with a new xcenter shadow icon. The package itself is assorted.  Quite a few are strictly my design.  Some were created by me cropping something from an advertisement I liked, pasting, and modifying it to something that looked presentable under OS/2. Some are based on free PNGs.  Just about all have been modified, added to, or enhanced to make it work as an OS/2 icon.  I have hundreds I created for the eComstation eschemes.  eSchemes doesn't work under ArcaOS.   Anything I have always done is free for everyone and they can use, modify and enhance them anyway they want which makes things less complicated,

I have attached a zip file containing a few of the icons I have created using this template in the past.  Enjoy.
