Applications / XWorkplace and missing folder contents...
« on: October 01, 2017, 06:05:35 pm »
So I've been struggling with this for a while now. Running XWP 1.0.11 here, SMP system with ACPI 3.23.06 release and 5 of the 6 CPU cores enabled. The 6th is off-line since attempting to bring WPS up with it enabled results in the dreaded WPS blue-screen hang.

Alright, so the issue is that any folder views, but most evident with the Drives/filesystem objects, stop populating. Initially, they will show objects, but eventually as I open new ones they halt, so the folder remains blank. As soon as this happens, even though it may have happened with a filesystem folder first the remaining WPS folder objects stop populating as well. The result is that my OS/2 box simply becomes unusable, I can no longer access any of my data or program objects. Re-boot is the only solution.

I have not found the root cause yet. I tried many things, playing with various setups, Lazy icons on/off, etc, etc. What I did notice is that putting my system into a single-core mode (by shutting off the remaining 4 cores) appears to work fine, so that implies the XWP folder functionality somehow runs into an issue in SMP environments.

There is a LOG entry generated in the xwptrap.log file (attached to the post, it's a bit lengthy), but that log does not tell me much.

Since 1.0.11 upgrade I have attempted to use the XView option...maybe that is causing the problem? Hard to tell, because even when I do not open any folders which use this mode the issue does show up anyways.

Most recently I found the following issue in the 'Workplace Shell' object when reviewing the 'Sort' tab I find multiple occurencies of the 'Real Name' option, see screenshot in the attachment. I took some time to go through the INI files but could not find where XWP gets this info. The HELP system gives the following info:

Sort by real name: this sorts a folder alphabetically according to file-system names. Since only file-system objects have real names, abstract objects will not be sorted properly.

...needless to say, I have not been able to figure out why I see multiple entries. This may be a whild goose chase, but I have nothing else to go on at the moment.

So the question to everyone: have you seen this behaviour, can you shed any light on what else I should look at?

Thanks!

This is a bit of a vent/rant, but I figured that's what the forum is for where I can share my experience at the very least, and if I am DEAD wrong, I want to hear from you guys.

So recently I logged a ticket for the RPM team (http://trac.netlabs.org/rpm/ticket/254)

My ANPM installation was failing to update the 'rpm' package. The log contained information which I uploaded to the ticket. The individual who picked up my ticket, alias 'diver', right from the start assumed that I could apparently read his mind and despite the fact that I requested multiple times that he provide detailed CLI command to troublshoot the issue with, he failed to do so.

Finally I got fed up with the BS. You see, I have some 20+ yrs of IS industry experience, a lot of it at the front line(s) of customer support, and given the type of bahaviour I saw in this ticket exchange I can tell you plain and simple: no corporation would allow a customer to face such poor behaviour. I stated so in the ticket, at which point in time I was told point blank by 'dmaik': "...your behavior is clearly arrogant...".

Am I the only one to encounter this? I do not know who these individuals are, although I am guessing who 'dmaik' maybe be. Anyways, what floors me is that in such a small community that OS/2 is today we still have this type of an attitude, that almost condesending "I know stuff and you do not" type of a talk-down.

I am only familiar with the OS/2 version of the RPM/YUM implementation. Given my current use of this process it is clearly buggy and/or maybe the logic is not sound. I have now had multiple issues with either failed updates, or most often pre-requisites that the RPM/YUM do not respect. The RPM team, whoever they may be, simply do not get that, or they simply do not wish to understand the full level of problems that the extended user community faces, or so it feels at the moment.

Internet / FF45.5 - choppy response/window scrolling anyone???
« on: May 21, 2017, 03:19:22 am »
Installed the 45.5 release of FF having installed the various pre-reqs...it came up OK, but very quickly found out that pretty much all feedback to any input (window scrolling, text typing - such as in this window) is very choppy!

This means, there is a pronounced delay in the browser response.

To better describe this is to say that if one were to turn off the "Smooth Scrolling" feature the results would be what I'm seeing.

I will try disabling the SET NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER=1 mode next, just to rule it out...

Is anyone seeing something similar to this?

BTW: this is on a 5 core SMP box...plenty of CPU power, but strangely the CPU monito shows very little activity.

Networking / DNS resolution...strange problem?
« on: May 02, 2017, 06:22:13 am »
So I'm a little stumped by the behaviour I am seeing, granted, I am a stranger to the "belly" of the TCP/IP beast!

Alright...so I've got a dynamic IP address account at no-ip.org, specifically "darico.no-ip.org" which normally resolves to my OS/2 machine. The router has port 80 mapping to my local static IP address for my OS2 box. The update of the darcio.no-ip.org host is done by my router as soon as the ISP assigned IP address changes, so this is automated and works reliably.

Recently I upgraded my no-ip.org to an Enhanced account and registered a domain (skokconsulting.com), which now allows me to re-direct additional traffic to one of the machine on my home network. This is all controlled through the router's port mapping functionality.

Here is where things are going "strange"...LOL: in a firefox session on my OS2 box I can not resolve neither the darcio.no-ip.org nor www.skokconsulting.com to the real OS2 box IP address. Instead darcio.no-ip.org it gets mapped to a weird looking re-direct, that being: http://www.skokconsulting.com:81/. Of course there is nothing out there listening on port 81, so this never connects. The www.skokconsulting.com gets resolved to 98.143.71.19 IP address...again, no idea where this is coming from. I do not have any of these in my HOSTS file!

What I can not figure out is how this re-direct of "darcio.no-ip.org" to "http://www.skokconsulting.com:81/" happens? There is nothing on noip.org server that does this...in fact I can confirm that the correct re-direct is done when I access both of these hosts from one of my Wintel boxes, so this leads me to believe there is something specific to either the OS/2 tcp/ip config, or to firefox itself that is doing this...just no idea where to even look ???

Internet / FF38 running into problems with latest NSPR update...
« on: April 16, 2017, 01:51:17 am »
I have been runing nspr RPM package 4.12.0-1 (oc00) i686 for some time now. Recently the 4.12.0-3 drop became available. I installed it, almost immediately started running into problems with FF.

The application would "freeze"...meaning, it would become non-responsive, the CPU monitor would show a complete drop of processing, almost like nothing was actually running...the ESC-CTRL hit would actually bring up Window List viewer where occasionally I managed to kill Firefox sessions, most often however I could not, nor could I do it in TOP, or CAD-popup. This was rarely an issue with FF in the past.

I went back to the 4.12.0-1 release, things are back to "normal"...so definitely something's off with the 4.12.0-3.

Question for everyone here, if I was to log a ticket for this...should this belong to FF, or the nspr (where ever that might actually be???)?

Thanks,
-Dariusz

Applications / Lucide 1.4.0 GA has a PDF plug-in problem...FYI!
« on: April 16, 2017, 01:43:30 am »
As with the previous 1.4.0 RC3 drop during the poppler RPM/YUM upgrade the previously functioning PDF plug-in got "killed". The workaround was to install both versions of poppler packages, those being:

poppler-legacy-63 (0.47.0-1)
poppler-legacy-65 (0.49.0-2)

This time around with the 1.4.0 GA drop even the above two are not sufficient, result is no ability for Lucide to display PDFs.

I logged a ticket, see => http://trac.netlabs.org/lucide/ticket/346

Applications / eCo Software Runtime Packages - benefits???
« on: April 08, 2017, 07:39:55 pm »
So in the process of re-newing my ArcaNoae Subscription package today I noticed that they also show the "eCo Software Runtime Packages" as available for download.

Having reviewed the latest changes/log entries it appears to me that these were intended to bring the newer user interface type improvements to our OS/2 platform. Certainly the FOC alone is ripe for a lot of changes which would benefit us all...and it certainly appears that some of these options have been addressed. For example the log for the WIN runtime states the following:

foc
  25.12.2016 Dmitry A.Steklenev
   - Now WC_PREVIEW formats date and time according to the current locale.
   - Added standalone preview plug-in for JPEG files. This plug-in can work on
     systems without MMOS2 installed.
   - The context menu of the file dialog and of the directory selection
     dialog now have a "Properties" menu item.
   - By default, the file dialog remembers last 10 of selected files and
     directories. This number can be redefined via ULONG value of the
     MaxRecentItems key of the PM_ControlPanel section of the user profile
     (OS2.INI). The maximal possible value is 128.
   - Settings of the WPFOCSystem WPS class now splitted into two pages.

Sooo...before I take a stab at installing these can anyone tell me/or provide feedback on just how "usuable" these enhancements are? Meaning, is the implementation intended to re-direct the standard FOC calls to these enhanced versions, or is it that only apps re-written to take advantage of the new APIs can actually use these features?

Thanks!

I have been using native GSView and Ghostscript for a number of years now. Even though Lucide has come along nicely I still experience pretty regular printing issues with it (see http://trac.netlabs.org/lucide/ticket/342)...so I rely on Ghostveiw/script to always come through with a good hard-copy output.

The current working setup is made up of:

1) GSView 5.0 (2012-01-07 release)
2) Ghostscript 9.04

I installed the current RPM package of Ghostscript, that being 9.18. I then modified the setups in GSView so re-point it to the RPM version of the install.

1) Working setup of GSView
"Ghostscript DLL:"
=> G:\APPS\GENERAL\GSTOOLS\gs9.04\bin\gsdll2.dll

"Ghostscript Include Path: "
=> g:\apps\general\gstools\gs9.04\resource\Init;G:\apps\general\gstools\gs9.04\lib;g:\apps\general\gstools\gs9.04\resource\Font;g:\psfonts;

"Ghostscript Options:"
=> -dNOPLATFONTS -sFONTPATH="g:\psfonts;g:\apps\general\gstools\gs9.04\resource\Font"

2) NEW setups of GSView
"Ghostscript DLL:"
=> G:\usr\lib\gsdll2.dll

"Ghostscript Include Path: "
=> G:\usr\share\ghostscript\9.18\resource\init;G:\usr\share\ghostscript\9.18\lib;G:\usr\share\ghostscript\9.18\iccprofiles;

"Ghostscript Options:"
=> -dNOPLATFONTS -sFONTPATH="g:\psfonts;G:\usr\share\fonts\default\ghostscript;G:\usr\share\fonts\default\type1"

This gave me a working display of the PDF, meaning, GSview has no problems properly rendering the PDF files. The only issue I actually have is the ability to print. Specifically, any attempt to do so produces the following error message:

=== START ===
GPL Ghostscript 9.18 (2015-10-05)

    defaultdevice

=== STOP ===

Because of the message above (...could not find default_gray.icc...) I included the matching directory in the Include Path setup, that being: "G:\usr\share\ghostscript\9.18\iccprofiles;". Still, this has had no impact, the error remains.

So I'm curious how have others proceeded in this migration step? Have you completely un-installed Ghostview? Have you made any other changes?

Thanks as always!

Web applications / FF 38.x - problems invoking from within PMMail
« on: January 10, 2017, 01:36:25 pm »
I recently moved (full-time) from FF17.x to FF38.x, so far it actually seems to have made my OS/2 machine more stable...I suspect that is partly due to the fact that I had moved to YUM/RPM and little by little have managed to move to the recent versions of DLLs (consistently, across many apps).

Anyways, I am using an older version of PMMail (2.00.1500) and whereas opening up any email in FF 17.x was never a problem, with FF 38.x I now consistently get an error message:

"...Firefox can't find the file at /G://APPS//TCPIP//PMMAIL//PMMAIL//TEMP//TEMP.HTM..."

My PMMail parameters are set as:
1) call FF 38.x => G:\apps\tcpip\firefox\firefox.exe
2) pass it the URL as a parameter => %s

In comparison, if there is a URL listed in the email body itself, highlighting it and openning FF still works fine...

Therefore, this begs the question: has the opening of a file changed with FF 38.x, because the TEMP.HTM file is certainly present in the location passed to FF?

145
So I've got this strange thing happenning here.

Upgraded to XWP 1.0.11...couldn't wait to use the Xview functionality...love it!....but....eventually the WPS folder functionality dies...meaning, the folders stop being populated, the folder window is made up of the frame and background, at the top the menu bar shows...nothing else shows up.

When this occurs switching between Xview, icon, detail, tree does not help. The impact is system-wide, meaning all other folder operations are impacted by this.

I will log a bug, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen anything like this?

Thanks,
-Dariusz

Applications / Firefox 38.8.0 - userchrome.css and UI settings...
« on: January 07, 2017, 05:06:27 pm »
Hi Everyone!

Over the holidays I managed to find a little time to re-take the plunge into 38.x Firefox...previously I got stuck on the YUM/RPM install and reconciling this new method with my previous way of maintaining DLLs, now beyond this.

OK, so in my FF 17.x install I had customized the userchrome.css to control the fonts & sizes of the UI. As FF 38.x inherited these settings they look rather ugly...so rolling the changes back to just a default version of that css produces a very clean UI.

My question to you is: who is using what changes to create a pleasant (beauty is in the eye of beholder of course...lol) look for the UI?

I am of course using Workplace Sans font, etc, etc...also looking at the " Theme Font & Size Changer 50.2" Add-On as it appears to be designed to do exactly what I'm talking about, albeit in a much more user-friendly way.

EDIT: having done some comparisons take a peek at the attached screen-capture...it shows the differences with a default userchrome.css but using the TTF and BitMapped TTF version of the Workplace_Sans fonts.

Thanks!

Alright...so I finally decided to give the Turbo folders a try. At first things went pretty smoothly, my current application associations/settings were imported w/o any problems. However, the filename filters are a separate options (and I really do like how this is configured in XWP with the group/hierarchy options)...so I proceeded to try this as well.

However...not fully understanding the filter import process I actually imported ALL of my current filters into a single application, in this case PDF (Lucide)...and, well, as you might have guessed it I now have a pretty good mess on my hands...meaning, just about every single known filename mask filter points to my Lucide app...LOL...!!!

"No problem" I though, I would just remove the filters that do not match, since that functionality is present in XWP, but this is where I ran into problems. The minute I remove a single filter I get a soft lock of the WPS...meaning, my CPU meter still chugs along, I can see updates in my apps, but WPS no longer responds. I rely on CAD to get to CAD-Popup and Reboot gracefully (somewhat). I have now tried this multiple times and each time the moment I delete a filter the WPS locks.

Since I back-up my OS2SYS & OS2 files regularly I was able to get back to a working config, however, I do like the Turbo Folders behaviour and would like to pursue this option further. Inevitably mistakes do happen, so I'm trying to figure out why I'm seeing the WPS lock, in case I ever have to un-do such a mistake in the future.

Has anyone encountered this behaviour?

Applications / Exiftool - processing multi-frames per second capture...
« on: December 25, 2016, 07:39:54 pm »
I use Marcel Müller's 'exiftool' to process all of my Pentax K5's photos...works great, quick....but...the minute I am attempting to process a series of multi-shots, where the date/time stamp is literally down to the same second (my K5 will do 7 frame/sec in high-speed) the exiftool appears to process all the frames, but they progressively get overwritten by the next frame which still carries the same date/time stamp.

I am curious if anyone has found a way to deal with this type of a situation? I will reach out to Marcel to see if this is something he can tweak?

=== START ===

Exiftool 0.2.1
  (C) by Marcel Müller, 2004-2014
Purpose:
  Rename photo file(s) in EXIF format. Convert EXIF
  info contained in the file(s) into OS/2 extended attributes.
  EXIF up to version 2.2 is supported.
  Exiftool is very similar to renamepics.
Usage:
  exiftool [/d] [/e] [/r] [/h] [File]
Parameters:
  /d        Only print complete file information to standard output
            [default: rename file(s) and generate EAs quietly]
  /e        Write EXIF infos to EAs only (don't reaname pics)
  /x        Remove duplicate files
            If the destination name already exists and the file content is the
            same, the source file is deleted.
  /h        Print this help screen, then abort [default]
  File      File name, or template for file names (wildcards: * or ?)
Examples:
  exiftool /d 00000001.jpg > afile
  exiftool *.jpg
Note:
  Run Exiftool before editing your photo files. Non EXIF aware graphics
  software usually destroys the exposure info in EXIF files.

Applications / XWP (xWorkplace) v1.0.11 - filename change behaviour...
« on: December 24, 2016, 06:48:52 pm »
I discovered two separate behaviours in the most recent GA drop of XWP 1.0.11, which are different from the previous versions:

1) In the new folder 'Details' view one can no longer change a name of an object by double-cliking with the RMB. That function however remains as-is in all other views, therefore, working correctly.

2) The multiple-desktop (virtual) behaviour when XWP is combined with the SkyScrapper app no longer brings focus back to the Firefox windows. I previously thought this was a side-effect of another test release, but as it turns out this appears to be inherent to how the underlying XWP deals with focus changes. I am going to try to retire SkyScrapper up in haviour of the XWP's built-in virtual desktops functionality, so maybe that'll address the issue.

I'm more curious of anyone is seeing the same behaviour I am on #1 above?

Thanks, and Merry Christmas & Happy Holiday's to all!

Setup & Installation / Boot Manager options missing in LVM screen/menu?
« on: December 23, 2016, 02:55:46 pm »
So here is something weird (I think, unless my memory is letting me down... ::)).

I decided to set my main OS/2 partition as a default bootable volume. I opened up the LVM screen, tossed the view into Physical Mode and even though I can clearly see (and LVM detects the currently installed BM partition) I have no way of actually bringing up the BM Options window (which is where one actually does all the setups, like timeouts, default boot partitions, etc).

So here is what my disk structure looks like, showing the BM partition...
