Title: Cannot play midi files
Post by: Sharjeel Shafiq on September 20, 2019, 03:51:25 am
Hi All,

I setup ArcaOS 5.0.4 on a T42 and selected UniAud as the sound driver. When trying to use the Midi player to play a file such as bach.mid i'm getting an error: The device driver can not be opened or the required hardware is missing (rc=5006). Does the UniAud driver support Midi file playback?

As an alternative I see sound card drivers on Lenovo's site for the T42 but I cannot install them as it's a self-extracting executable that goes onto a floppy drive. Any tips on how to obtain those files as I don't have a floppy drive?

Yes, UniAud has no MIDI support. Not sure how to extract the sound driver from Lenovo, I tried before and failed:)
You can install software to play MIDI files and it'll sound much better then the hardware based MIDI player. Options include Timidity and Fluidsynth. Fluidsynth is a fairly new port and supported by the porter. http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/dev/mm/fluidsynth-2.0.6.zip (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/dev/mm/fluidsynth-2.0.6.zip) start here for directions on setting up the samples, http://www.fluidsynth.org/ (http://www.fluidsynth.org/). Or search for Timidity on Hobbes.

You can install a "virtual floppy". It's essentially a RAM disk that looks to the OS as if it were a floppy:

Hi Sharjeel

Please point me to the Lenovo's driver. I want to compared it to the ones on hobbes (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-browse.php?dir=/pub/os2/system/drivers/sound). I had upload some as zip files, without the self extract function. I want to see if I already have it on hobbes.
Maybe is this one (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/system/drivers/sound&file=AD_SoundMax_3-1-9.zip).

Regards

The official driver is at https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/downloads/ds000838 (https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/downloads/ds000838)

I battled with the self extractor before including trying to use the virtual floppy, it seemed to want A:

I managed to extract the image in a VirtualBox image of OS/2 Warp 4.52  ;D. Attached is the T42 sound card driver. Seems to work fine instead of the Uniaud driver. Still no midi playback capability natively though so I installed timidity and fluidsynth.

IBM's tend to support a drive's letter as an argument.
