Thanks, Ivan. I've got customers who would prefer AMD. I don't use AMD myself, so I don't know the issues.

Intel graphics on a current Lenovo ThinkCentre will support 4096 x 2304 @ 60 Hz via display port. Getting the computer to boot at all is an interesting problem, but solvable. But our support is through VESA, and I don't know if Lenovo will continue to support that in the future.

If we do our own hardware, it's important to coordinate the graphics hardware and drivers.

527
Let's presume that the driver set that is available limits the hardware available. So far I'm hearing:

CPU: 32 bit (is there a 32 bit multicore that you'd prefer?  Or would we have to have a 64 bit processor to have a decent multicore option?  Arca does handle multiple cores, correct?)

Currently, ACPI can handle some multicore features.

UEFI compatability mode or Legacy BIOS support

UEFI is not really ready yet.

Storage: SATA harddrives and optical drive  (Limited to DVD?  Does OS/2 use Blu-Ray, Blu-ray burners?)

SATA going away, we will need something newer.

Input/Output: PS/2 mouse and keyboard, serial, Parallel ports, USB 2.0

Sound:  Soundblaster 16?  (Does OS/2 do USB sound?)

Yes to USB audio. Soundblaster might be OK for DOS, but less so for OS/2.

Video:  If SNAP drivers are all we have, what's the best video chipset/card for this?  VGA output? DVI?

At this point, unaccellerated VESA through Panrama is faster than any SNAP setup.

For me, all of this would have to support the DOS and Win_OS/2 VDMs as well.

528
If a computer was built just for OS/2, it would also be a simple trick to have our existing drivers customized and tested for that particular hardware.

1. Memory model would provide 2 TB RAM managed as a file system.
2. 10 GB Wired, two interfaces
3. Up to date WiFi, two interfaces
4. 32-bit multi-channel sound in and out
5. up to date USB
6. SATA interfaces, eSATA
7. Working DOS VDM support
8. PS/2 ports, Serial ports, Parallel port
9. PCI, PCIe and ISA slots
10. VESA video support for new 8K monitors

If we also got drivers for it,

10. M2 DASD support
11. RAID

Nah. I develop only forum posts that gets snarky replies ...

Well, then play to your strengths. I agree with Roderick; if Otter is actually a better choice, then maybe it is worth a look.

Otter looks promising but the development even in Windows and Linux is very slow. FalKon is more stable.

Some how Haiku-OS guys have managed to make it work on Haiku-OS ...

Go ahead and post your Otter for OS/2 port. We need a new browser.

I know estimating software is problematic. I am worse than many at making estimates. Still, we must make plans.

Instead of giving a date two months hence for the browser, this time you said so for Qt 5. This is probably realistic, but past experience is that the job is quite large, and two months is not enough.

Then, after Qt is complete, then the Falkon browser will take some time to port. Is that two more months? Is July, 2020 a reasonable estimate now for Falkon?

Then, what about a reasonable debugging time for Falkon? Users will find problems that developers won't. So that will take some months to accomplish as well. Counting the debugging also as two months, it sounds like a reliable browser is about 6 months off, and funding is needed that VOICE cannot produce.

A reliable, modern browser will transform this platform. I have contributed in the past, and I intend to do so in the future. Thanks, Roderick, for organizing the funding of this project.

I'm sure you are all using SmartAHCI to track your SSD. You can compare your SSD values to the ones I have here for a hard disk.

I'm using 2 TB server class hard drive.

General Discussion / Re: Future death of the personal computer?
« on: February 20, 2020, 05:58:19 pm »
I mean the cloud is slowly removing my personal need for OS/2. However, the cloud has already replaced Windows, Linux and Mac on the desktop. All of these companies make far more profit on their cloud service than on their PC hardware and software.
Just wondering what specifically about the cloud replaces your need for os/2? What are you doing with it that you would have previously used your computer for?
Personally I can't imagine life without a PC - It's interesting to me that you can.

Well, OS/2 provides storage and applications.

Many of our applications are out of date, and better handled by more modern software. All the latest versions are cloud-based and eventually trickle back down to the PC. But I'm used to the OS/2 apps, so I only change when I have to.

Browser - Firefox is increasingly incompatible with websites I use. I often have to go to an alternative, and the phone is conveniently close by.

Storage is nice on OS/2, up to 2 TB, which is OK for now. I can see where backup to cloud may be coming. I'm concerned about privacy, but it's not like OS/2 has any protection against snooping.

I run an OS/2-based business. I need access to my business assets at all times. It's a lot more convenient to have this on the phone. Yes, of course I'm running the OS/2 desktop on my phone via VNC. I still see cloud services taking over as I move to a hybrid OS/2, iOS environment.

I already live in a hybrid world of iPhone/iPad + OS/2. It's certainly not the iPhone/iPad that are replacing OS/2. It's iCloud and the other on-line services. The new OS/2 browser cannot come soon enough.
Curious what you mean by the iCloud replacing OS/2? Personally I think cloud services are largely a scam. I use google drive for storage but I feel a lot of "cloud" services are just tricking you into paying a monthly fee for something you could have owned, like an office suite.

There will always be a few PC, and even a few PC servers. But even looking at chips, Intel and AMD are designing for the cloud.

I used to build computers for people from cases, motherboards, plug-in cards, power supplies, etc.

These things, while still available, cost far, far more than a manufactured computer. Availability is much less, too.

I already live in a hybrid world of iPhone/iPad + OS/2. It's certainly not the iPhone/iPad that are replacing OS/2. It's iCloud and the other on-line services. The new OS/2 browser cannot come soon enough.

It's good to see a piece about connecting the old IBM File and Print with Windows. Thanks! This ought to be in the OS/2 World Wiki.

About 10 years ago, I switched to SAMBA on the OS/2 side. Now OS/2 is the host. No changes are needed on the Windows side, or Mac, or iOS, or Android, or Linux. If OS/2 can't open a file, I have many choices of other platforms to use while keeping storage on OS/2.

It's worth noting that Windows has many security defects over what they call SMB networking that can never be fixed. Generally, SMB is now banned on commercial networks. It's still fine at home behind a firewall. But a virus in your printer, or in your security camera could use SMB to compromise your Windows machine.

At Warpstock 2019, we gave away 8 well preserved IBM PS/2 Computers. All were running. Hobbyists restoring old computer want OS/2. There are people who stockpile old hardware.

And then there are commercial operations who I cannot name still using PS/2 computers.

Keeping the legacy support files is Hobbes mission, or at least one of their missions
