Title: Converting .BOO to PDF ?
Post by: Martin Iturbide on April 04, 2019, 03:24:46 pm
Hi

What do you suggest to:
1) Open .Boo files
2) Convert them to PDF

I want to do that because I want to have some books readable on the internet and not everybody has a .boo reader.

Regards

Open .BOO and print to PDF.

Or use online converter :

"Alternative way to convert a BOO file to a PDF file

The PDF24 provides several online tools that can be used to create PDF files. Supported files are added on a rolling basis and maybe the file type BOO is also already supported. The converter service has different interfaces. Two of them are the following:

The PDF Converter online from PDF24 supports a large number of files that can be converted to PDF format. Simply select your BOO file from which you would like to have a PDF version, click the "convert" button and you will get a PDF version of your file. "

Hi

Open .BOO and print to PDF.

My issue is that I also don't remember anymore which was the software to open .boo files and if it was freely available on the internet.

This site is not recognizing .boo files to convert them. Are you sure about that?

Isn't .boo the extension for a M$ file compression format? Then trying to convert that to PDF won't make much sense for me.

.boo files are IBM Bookmanager files , which can also be read with the free IBM Library Reader

A downloadable DevCon package may contain the IBM Bookmanager too, IIRC (unverified).

Martin,

Try the attached file. It came from DevCon but I don't remember which one. I do remember that I had a difficult time locating the file. This is the OS/2 version. I think the FTP site Lars mentioned contains the windows version.

I think you need a SET READIBM=path  statement in your config.sys. This is the "bookshelf" path that contains the *.b00 books you want to read.
And I seem to remember that the install program was a little hinky. If you have a problem you can probably put the SET READIBM statement in you config.sys, unzip the files to a directory, (reboot), and execute readibm.exe

The link I gave contains everything: the DOS version, the Windows version and the OS/2 version.
The files you need (for english) are ios2pen1.exe and ios2pen2.exe.

Hallo Martin,
Just to lessen your expectations:

the IBM library reader does NOT allow to print the whole document (via a converter to PDF, for example).
For copyright reasons the reader will only print MARKED text. I don't think that is what you want ...

The process of conversion depends on different host-based programs (DCF, BookMaster, ...). Of course some of them can interface to OS/2 workstations.

At  least it should be possible to create lower quality printouts to PostScript or PDF targets. Simply follow the directions in "Installing, Managing, and Using the Online Library" (GC31-8311-39). In IBM Softcopy Reader or BookManager READ you can select all topics to print, but it will be quite useless without working indices or content list.

Ask or search in comp.sys.ibm.ps2.hardware, I'm sure Kevin or someone was converting .boo's to .pdf's in the past few years

Hi Ian

Kevin even made a service on a webpage to convert it: http://ps-2.kev009.com/boo2pdf/
Also source code is here: https://github.com/kev009/boo2pdf

But it is not working, it gives me an error.
