Setup & Installation / Clock Syncrhonization under ArcaOS
« on: November 02, 2025, 05:34:18 pm »
ArcaOS uses Clock Synchronization to adjust for Daylight Savings Time (DST) adjustments. The time just changed in my part of the world, and when I sat down at the computer, it was still on DST. So I synchronized manually again this year.

But while I was doing it, I noticed something. ArcaOS is set up to synchronize every 720 minutes. But I get up early, and it's only been 240 minutes since the time changed. I changed the 720 to 180, and I'm going to see if it works next time the time changes, March 8, 2026.

There is a nice article on Wikipedia about SlickEdit. Apparently it's author also wrote the E editor while at IBM. This is a good choice for at least some support for OS/2 users, because the author will know what OS/2 is.

One of the reasons to attend Warpstock is to be in a room with other OS/2 users. There aren't many opportunities to do that.

Dmitry Kuminov and David Azarewicz will be attending in person, so if you have questions about development on either Linux porting or device drivers, this is a very good chance.

I don't think anyone on the board really has the bandwidth to do any of that. We've called for volunteers for that before. If you or anyone else would like to organize presentations and a new conferencing tool, we are open having new people in that role.

A few months ago, I sent JTA and many others a personal e-mail asking for your ideas for Warpstock 2025. I invited every previous presenter to present again.

A call for ideas and presentations hasn't been particularly productive.

If you can see a way to improve Warpstock, and you are willing to help us implement it, I'd like to hear from you.

Setup & Installation / Re: Extremely slow Warp 4.52 installation.

I agree with Dave Yeo. It's likely a partitioning error from what was on the disk before. You really need to wipe the drive to get past it. In the past, I used DFSee to do the trick. If your computer can boot Puppy Linux, then the bootable version of DFSee will work to wipe the drive.

If the OS/2 installer can't partition the drive, stop and fix that. OS/2 can quick-format HPFS one of those drives in under 30 seconds. If that's not the situation, then waiting 24 hours for an install won't result in a nice system anyway.

Setup & Installation / Re: Installing ZipCntrl
« on: September 02, 2025, 03:21:59 pm »
This might have been pilot error. I ran the install program and I do get a folder named "RPF Zip Control". I was looking for "Zip Control", and I may have missed it.

I haven't checked how it can support links (zip -y)

Setup & Installation / Installing ZipCntrl

I'm installing ZipCntrl 2.7.4, but the folder does not get created.

http://www.RPFSoftware.com

If I start it, it works on older zip files. If I configure it to use the current unzip.exe, it seems to work on all zip files.

Does anyone else get a folder created by install?

Thanks for testing, P.R. I raised a support issue with my ISP, but they were not that helpful.

Interestingly, my ISP said OS2World.com was timing out completely, but since I described what was happening, they said they could only guess that your (P.R.'s) ISP might be blocking either the blondeguy.com domain or just the FTP port of the blondeguy.com domain.

64 GB is fine.

Those old programs are from an era when disks came in MB, not GB. Make a scratch volume of 500 MB and install onto that. After that, you can probably move it to the real boot volume.

The error 4 mentioned in the log is the return code from wget. Error 4 is simply Network Failure.

The FTP server is one provided by my ISP, so it's not likely to be down for very long. If FTP connections work, but not to my server, then one solution would be for me to change the program to use HTTPS for my server. I'll consider that.

Perhaps something is blocking FTP?

If some people are able to access and some not, is it likely to be a server problem?

Thanks for the report. I'll have to think about why you can't access FTP. I can reach it from here.

I'm also confirming the shared folders are working here.

When I upgraded my Windows 11 host system to VirtualBox 7.20, no errors were found, but I could not start my ArcaOS 5.1.1 virtual machine. I restarted a few times, and eventually it ran, so I updated OS/2 Additions and tested shared folders.

I had the same EA issue as Martin, but that is acceptable for me.

Suntan Special 0.69 has been released

The newest release of Suntan Special, version 0.69, is available. Suntan Special is a system configuration tool that installs and maintains a collection of useful fixes, applications and development tools to ArcaOS, OS/2 or eComStation systems.

http://www.blondeguy.com/suntan6.html

Current Suntan Special users are entitled to upgrade to 0.69. The upgrade may be downloaded using the application refresh feature of Suntan Special.

Suntan Special may be downloaded at no charge. The price for a Suntan Special CD or DVD is $24.95 including shipping to USA and $39.95 for shipping outside USA.

The first release of Suntan Special since 2019. This release fixes a few bugs, and adds support for HobbesArchive and its mirrors. Version 0.69 adds better support for installations under VirtualBox. A new feature, MasterSequence, detects the operating system creates and executes a sequence designed to install all available fixes and applications. Thanks to current users whose suggestions have been incorporated in the new version of Suntan Special.

Support is also restored for OS/2 Warp 4 and for OS/2 Warp 4 Convenience Pack. These concentrate on support inside a VirtualBox session. If you got OS/2 running, and wonder what it is good for, Suntan Special will install a suite of software that will answer that question.
