Hardware / Re: Display-port and HDMI
« on: October 27, 2021, 11:11:41 pm »
Good news they just work. They are video driver agnostic. The video hardware deals with the HDMI port.
When you connect an LCD screen to a HDMI port at startup the Panorama driver will work just fine with HDMI port.

Not sure if stuff like FF for example uses DIVE or not? But at least here that's probably the most demanding applicatin (given that it's all about on-going screen updates) and from my perspective it seems like a higher 'PM Graphics Marks' value impacts this the most.

It depends, DIVE is supposed to be disabled if using Panorama and enabled if using SNAP.  I have a vague memory of things getting backwards at some point, need to look. Also perhaps Panorama has improved its handling of the shadow buffer enough that DIVE would be a good choice.
The setting for DIVE should be "Full Hardware Acceleration enabled" or similar.

DIVE is not switched off with Panorama. Its something provided by MMOS/2.

Applications / Re: Otter Browser
« on: October 13, 2021, 10:18:46 am »
I set up Otter Browser under Ubuntu, and I was able to import my bookmarks from Firefox. So far, so good.

Where I ran into trouble, though, was that I cannot visit any secure sites. Now Otter under Ubuntu is not the same as under ArcaOS, but I think the architecture of secure web browsing should be similar. Is anyone familiar enough with running applications under Ubuntu to help me get secure web browsing to work?

Here is the error: Warning: Otter Browser. SSL support is not available or incomplete. Some websites may work incorrectly or do not work at all.

I am not familiar enough with Ubuntu to correct this.

Otter on OS/2 has this. A small group of people are testing this hence the reason files moved from experimental to release. They where already tested.
SSL is working of course. We currently experience crashes of the browser. Its pretty stable so first resolving this.

If after having installed recent updates breaks Firefox or something else is not working. As I said provide details to best of your abillities.
Then we can continue to move OS/2 forward. Is that always fun to debug stuff, well its not. But if we keep everything static on OS/2 we can not move forward.

Applications / Re: Updated RPMs - big release chunk...

Hi Roderick,

Hi Everyone!

I noticed a number of updated RPMs out there. Specifically what surprised me were all the NSPR, NSS and the libc, libx, libicu and libkai ones.

For those of you who may have tried the netlabs-exp test releases a while back, there were numerous problems that were identified. The biggest issue at that time was that these updates pretty much made our FF unusable.
...

If you say something is unstable, you know the drill... :-) Please include some information, for example popuplog.os2 entries . Then we have a hint.

Thanks,

Roderick

My comment was related to the initial netlabs-exp testing I did when these came out some months ago. When I said FF was unusable, I mean that...the browser would go down every couple of minutes and following the initial investigation here on our forum, as well as some feedback on the AOS list I had to rollback.

Anyways, it is understood that even the smallest of changes can have a significant impact on some of the biggest applications we run.

So to follow-up on what Doug floated above: how about setting up a BWW TesterList, and perhaps even sub-dividing the RPMs into application category/function domains where each one would be spearheaded by a Lead Tester?

My thinking being: it is probably easier to "divide and conquer" this, than for a single person at BWW to deal with all the issues being reported during such testing, isn't it?

That would be welcome suggestion. But for a start ask people how much feedback BWW and Paul Smedley get. Well not that much...
if that would happen more often, a ticket opened, that would help.  And yes not all tickets are easy to resolve or reproduce...

I have been trying to setup a server running that does checkouts in a VM then starts applications and see if they startup.  But it all takes time...

It has partly been constructed by the way.

Hi Dariusz,

I couldn't agree more with you about the RPM's, in fact I suspect that there is very little testing of the 'updates' in real world situations.

In fact it got so bad that I have stopped applying updates to my main work computer, at least doing that I can get some work done.  On my test machine I have now equipped it with a hard disk plug in draw which allows me to install a hard disk with an image from a working unit.  If an update messes up anything it is a simple matter to pull the HD draw, slot it into a similar unit on the main machine an just re-image the disk again.  I am not a programmer so I can't be bothered trying to work out what isn't working, that is the job of those producing the updates before they release them - at least that is how it works in industry.

Well Bitwise Works is not IBM in terms of financial resources and man power.  You can not expect BWW to test all the stuff. They maintain with a small group other developers 300 DLL's.

If you do not want to install them, remember that they will not be tested.

What could be considered normal IT practics in the ICT industry is something which does not apply to the OS/2 community.
We simply do not have the respources for this to happen. So it happens on a best effort basis.

I was one of the folks to test at that time and went through a fairly messy rollback process.

Sooo...while I'm excited to see the updates having gone to netlabs-rel, I am a little leery of installing. Therefore, I'm curious if anyone has already pushed that UPGRADE button yet and what has your experience been like so far?

A lot of these RPM's where moved by Dmitry from BWW so we can prepapre the testing of the new Otter browser by more people. If things no longer work, let me know by sending an email to roderickklein@xs4all.nl. Please mention which program does not work after updating. What version of the browser you are running for example and send any except reports or popuplog.os2 entries.

Games / Re: DOS VDM - USB and Game port Gamepad support
« on: October 02, 2021, 04:04:47 pm »
This whole thing has two sides to it.

First of all its the device driver it self that needs to communicate with the USB joystick or gamepad. How that can be done. While writing the device driver should not be that difficult I do not know how well standardized gamepads and USB joysticks are.  Is there a USB class for such devices ?

However if you have an OS/2 driver that is the first step. What I do not know is if Wim Brull his driver or usbresmgr.sys can used for such a project.
USBRESMGR in my understanding seems to effectively a ring 3 to ring 0 device driver that enables you to use a DLL to control equipment from OS/2 with a DLL. A good example of this is TAME.

You then automatically come with the second portion. You will need a VDD for DOS sessions. This VDD would emulate a legacy Joystick. I think the hex address is 301 or for a Joystick port ? The VDD would need to capture port 301 and send the data from and to the USB OS/2 driver.

Since joysticks are so timing senstive a command given on a USB stick should arrive up at the game ASAP!
So you need a driver that the DOS VDM driver can directly talk at ring 0. I do not know if thsi can be done at ring0 with USBRESMGR.SYS or Wim Brul his driver.

Joystockv.sys (VDM driver)-> USB PDD->USB stack->Joystick

Storage / Re: exFat or FAT32 ?

When you write:
"I have got serious problems with FAT32 partitions on my Hard Disc with FAT32. ArcaOS often hangs."

So I guess you know what question is going to coming ? Tadaaa!
What is the version of number of the FAT32 driver you are using ?

Well sorry that is what I just mentioned in my Warpstock presentation. The current Mozilla suite it is all even further and faster down hill from here...
You can try using the QT testbrowser VOICE and BWW released.

The internal beta of the otter browser Google drive works.

Roderick Klein

But how well does the browser still work if the browser it reports is pushed to a current version ?
Do all website elements like login and other entry fields work ?

Hi

I just checked the Bitwise site and it says "As of 05.08.2021 we collected 46880 €.", which is 96% of the 49000 € goal.
It is a record for the community raising that money and I had taken a lot of effort from all (the community and Bitwise). I really hope to see some public beta soon.

Regards

Keep in mind that the 49.000 Euro was an estimate.  More smaller setbacks have been encountered.
But you can follow this on the different Git pages of bitwise works.
Currently a new LIBC version is being worked to fix more issue's for the browser. But we are moving closer.
The clipboard support (copy paste) is next on the schedule. So I am hoping next week somewhere a first beta can be send out to the first group of people. Making the new Otter Browser the first RPM based browser to be installable on OS/2.

It should be noted that you need ACPI 03.23.16 or higher. From what I understand this is because of some update to the highres timer.
Also ArcaOS kernel 14.203 will be required to prevent your system from crashing.  But this will be documented in the readme file.
Note that the webkit dll (about 240 MB) needs to be loaded high. So you need a kernel that supports this!

Hardware / Re: DOS Window Woes
« on: July 23, 2021, 05:35:29 pm »
One thing to take into account is that currently for ArcaOS requires a so called CSM is. Effectively the UEFI firmware provides a BIOS compability layer.
The issue is that OS/2 leans on BIOS stuff hardly basically almost no other OS uses. Windows 7 was the last OS to be shipped on PC using a BIOS.
UEFI was introduced in 2013.

Putting it differently the CSM might be required to meet certain specifications, but vendors have in practicallity very little need to test the CSM that extensively.
Windows 7 was the last OS requiring a CSM. The issue you are running into with the DOS session not working is most likely an issue in the system CSM and can most likely not be resolved unless you open a ticket at Arca Noae. Your issue is most likely beyond this forum to help you as it will require some indepth analyses WHY this is happening. The testlog reveals nothing strange.

The phase out of the CSM in the UEFI system code is also the reason I understand Arca Noar is working on UEFI support for ArcaOS.

Setup & Installation / Re: Intel NUC (A20 Gate error)
« on: July 22, 2021, 10:30:23 pm »
This a years old issue in the OS2CSM code Veit wrote in circa 2005. You get the same error message on older Mac Books with a CSM in the UEFI firmware.

Three  solutions for now:

1) Arca Noae would need to fix this in the OS2CSM code.

2) Wait for 5.1. As its true this issue will not occur in an UEFI boot.

3) Install on a different system (put the hard disc in another system).
Take amount of USB host controllers into account and modify the NIC driver.

Stating up front, I have already done the /int10grfxsafe thing, MODE C80, etc I even installed a VIOP10.WPI that someone referenced somewhere else.

The issue is with DOS windows. I had a issue previously on a different computer and the above did fix that. But this is on a Lenovo Desktop (Blondeguy machine).

This issue is different from the issue i had on the other computer.

Now the DOS window opens, it shows text changing in the first 2 columns of the window and after 20-30 seconds the OS locks up.

Attached is an image of what the top left of the window looks like, characters seem to scroll across the 2 character area, but it doesn't look like it is a continuous stream.

I've been dealing with this issue for awhile. The computer runs my BBS and the only thing I can't do is run BBS doors since most are all DOS. Just wish I could figure it out and maybe play some LORD or USURPER again :P

Create a testlog of this system and upload it.

What is the make and model of your system. Having more information will be helpfull.
It seems DOS windows is not the issue, but rather the the VDM support is broken.
Starting WIN/OS2 full screen will also hang the system.

Changing the video driver will most likely not help.
If you have the line ACPI.PSD in your conrfig.sys try starting with ACPI.PSD /MAXCPU=1 and try again.

But this rather sounds like VDM code running in into trouble either by the CSM layer in your BIOS or the video card BIOS code screwing up.
Because that is what VSVGA.SYS depends on.
