Title: One font can hang the system ecs22beta2+updates? Workplace sans normal
Post by: roberto on March 19, 2016, 11:35:30 pm
Hello
I am not sure if this problem is only in my system, but I test it with e.exe and with dbexpert, the font with problems is Workplace sans normal, the font Workplace sans bold is ok. Only when print it with psprint, or when I create a ps file before print.

yes.. I confirm that a new font was causing hangs of eCS.

add-on: *if* you drop the font to the Desktop

I can not confirm this, here it works well without hangs WPS (printing to pdf & ps creation) on eCS2.2b2, check better your ghostscript configuration.
Maybe Workplace Sans normal font could be better renderized, but this is another issue.

I do not have the hang if I send or create a pdf or ps with pdfwriter without font embedded. I have the hang if use *psprint* with font embended similar to this:
Code: [Select]
clip n d2w
%%Trailer
end
epsSave restore
%%DocumentSuppliedFonts:
%%+ font Workplace Sans Bold
%%+ font URW Palladio L Bold
%%+ font Courier Italic
%%+ font Helvetica Italic
%%Pages: 1

[code/]

Another form for test it, is select your psprint.your printer, textformat, change font, select workplace sans normal, and click ok and crash...

Again, i cannot confirm, since here, i have not crashes at all.
Quite strange, for now my only suggestion is still to check your configuration, since a system/wps crash like you say could be not related simply to ghostscript/cups setups.

Hello Barbara
Thanks for test, but you are runing in a pscript printer, no in a psprint. In pscript I do not have problems.
I have deduced *pscript* by the icon image of the printer.

Yes, your are right, it hangs. Fortunatly this seems to occurr only using Workplace Sans normal font. Maybe a new version will solve the problem.

Hello, with this bitmaps font, do not hang, but in screen show in correct position the text. But in ps is the same = printer in paper, in same cases the text is move.

I go to test the other font...

This fonts not hang the system, but you can see the screen and the ps= is the printer:
wpsu-bit-normal94
wpsu-withoutbit-normal111
wpsub-bit95
wpsub-withoutbit55

In the ps the text ***Id*** is cut.
In screen in text ***Last name*** with wps bold the font show as courier.

@Dave: Yes, i'm using latest fonts.
Only for purpose test, I'll try to convert Alex's latest ttf to another format and revert to ttf using fontforge on linux, to see if this can solve the problem, waiting for the next version.

FWIW, I'll be updating Workplace Sans to v1.01 fairly soon (hopefully within this month).

There are known problems printing plain text format using a TrueType font with PSPRINT. As noted in another thread on this forum, it seems to occur when word wrapping is enabled.  This seems to be some sort of PSPRINT bug, so I don't think updating Workplace Sans is likely to fix it, but by all means let me know what the results are.

There will hopefully be more work done on PSPRINT later this year.

@Alex: Many thanks for all your efforts  ;) !
Only for purpose test.....
Try this...
unlock wpsu.ttf, rename to .org, update and reboot.
It seems to work with both drivers.
Since i don't have it, what about dbexpert?
The render looks like the original one, with more than a pdf viewer.
Latest screenshots after some changes into settings, much better than before.
But since there have been some "Warnings" during conversion, they may not be suitable for all purposes.
Let us know.

I test in dbexpert this 2 fonts. I send the screen is the same in 2 cases, and the ps show the same. I only test the printer with the wpsu-bitmaps and is = ps.
But with the font wpsu without bit wpsu139size, after restart the system ecs2.0, the desktop show corrupt, a new restat and corrupt.  Apparently os2 inis corrupt.
Restart with a cd ecs2.2beta, and run a chkdsk to boot partion c: jfs, restart and all ok again. I can not ensure that this problem is with the font.

Indeed it should not be strictly related to fonts, since i tested both without any corruption restarting the system, however installing something using unconventional metods is always a risk, sorry, i should have suggest you to check your ini files. The bit font package is the latest (1.000) and should be preferred (the other package is the previous no bit release).
Try using DMT and/or checkini or both until your ini are cleaned.
Let me know if you wanna test also the 1.000 no bit, i'll convert it.

For me, this is a problem in AUTOCHECK in JFS, that in same cases no detected that it have to check the boot-drive.
IFS=C:\OS2\JFS.IFS /LW:5,20,4 /AUTOCHECK:*
There is any option for force check in all cases the drive c?

Maybe /FORCE and /AC, which are HPFS.IFS parameters work also on JFS filesystems (indeed they refer to CHKDSK), so, supposing your boot drive is C, the following statement should always perform a deeply check on C at every startup and an autocheck on other hard disks, E and F:
IFS=C:\OS2\JFS.IFS /LW:5,20,4 /FORCE /AC:+C /F:3 /AUTOCHECK:EF
Never tryed, let us know.

Hi roberto

When you state "ecs22beta2+updates" does that include JFS 1.09.06 from Arca Noae?

I ask because I had problems with that update which I could only resolve by reverting to the JFS 1.09.05 supplied with eCS2.2beta2

If there is some sort of system crash it is possible that hard drive volumes seem "clean" to jFS autocheck on reboot but if it is possible that the volumes can be "Dirty but marked as Clean"  - I think that is the wording used by chkdsk - so a standard /AUTOCHECK:* will not work.

With JFS 1.09.05 and earlier it is possible to Force a chkdsk at boot by using the parameter /AUTOCHECK:+* for all volumes or specify individual volumes /AUTOCHECK:+D+G

JFS 1.09.06 does not support the /AUTOCHECK:+ parameter so it is not possible to force a chkldsk at boot when using that JFS release.

I also found that JFS 1.09.06 could lose a volume at boot - chkdsk does not report the volumes existence during boot and when booted to the Desktop that volume is missing. Sometimes simply running LVM and Saving when Exiting without making any changes made the volume available; sometimes it needed a reboot.

Regards

Pete

I am runnig in 2 pcs, one with this config and another with ecs2.0 + updates.

With jfs 1.09.06 I am running very well.(in my test pc or laptop)

Yes, I detect this problem in a ecs2.0+updates. Because I do not restore the os2inis, only run a chksdk from CD, and all repair.

I do not see this problem, but in same times, after restart I see that I can not open all the folders in drives, in this case close the system and restart again solve the problem. If this not solve your problem, leave 4 hours off the pc and restart it.

Two explanations of this, I do not install the DaniS506-1.08.15.exe .But I have installed all other updates.
Before you start working with your computer , open drives in screen,  not a command com, with the mouse . The largest unit with more folders, i have aprox.200 folders, if you open and can move to the end without problems , continuous working , if not restart the computer again to find a correct start . After this simple test, the system is a rock .
This told me someone here , that is only a problem in the beta , which will be resolved in the final version .

This is a personal choice, but if you prefer anti-aliasing (which i.e. is enabled on  new web browsers) the bitmap one is more suitable. To the other hand, the non bitmapped release can cause an irregular glyph scaling on some point sizes (scaling which yourself have seen) whitout anti-aliasing, exactly as Alex reported.
Regards.

If you have to tell me something, do it as if I were a child of 2 years. I have to translate what you say and I have to understand you. And I do not understand you.

Be patient , we can explore other possibilities:
Using other programs.
Open office org. 411, screen ok, but the file.ps can be bad? the gsview not open. But I think that the ps is ok.
Ibmworks, screen is bad, but this can solved is charge the font in the fontmanager in psprint,(i do not want in firts), this program not cut the text, the text is displace to right. The file.ps is ok.
In Dbexpert, the font helvetica is ok in screen and in ps. (In principle rule out an error in the dbexpert)
Other programs?

Make a scale from largest to smallest size in the text sample.

What kind of use are your .ps to?
To view, archive, convert into pdf, print them?
I'll prefer the bit font, since the output has a better rendering.
Simply archive them?
It is right also the no bitmap one.
Are you using the latest firefox releases?
The bitmap font is much more suitable.
Your .ps are ok, as you can see their output in attach using my tools here.

Yes, you are right, check them..
To install latest ghostscript you need YUM/RPM (suggested), hoterwise they are here in .zip format:

Yes, you are right, check them..
Maybe they need some changes to better fit tab spaces, but, thinking about, this last was done using my bitmap conversion, and since you said the original bit from Alex is right for you, i'm going to reinstall it to try once again.
Maybe it works fine for your purposes.
I let you know.
As you can see, the output is the same, using both bit font versions (the original one and the one done by me): you need to find a way to better fit tab spaces.

Hello Barbara
Now with Clearlook, is a text editor with the same problem, for delete noises I increase the size to 32, and the tab spaces with text.
I have a question, I install from Arca p m , the gs9.18.4, but I have de previous ver of ghostscript in other drives. How can I ensure that this version is running now, and not the previous.?
I solve the problem in clearlook, that close the program, in the setup, have this option:

Fron the help of CL:
(this fail)"Print in thread: If checked, Clearlook uses a background thread when printing documents.
(this is ok)Turn this option off only if you experience trouble printing documents in the background. "

Hello Barbara
Now with Clearlook...
I think you should wait for next versions (fonts & print driver): this is my TABSTOP.CTX output with both drivers using the same configuration at all.
As you can see, the output is a bit different, of course the .ps files are ok, but the tab spaces outputs differ.
Trying to fit better them on psprint driver could be now a wasting time, i'll suggest you to use the pscript driver until Alex end the jobs.

Thanks Barbara, I see you're on the right track.
I have a suggestion for Alex , for the new psprint .
For years , I have been able to drag & drop to file.pdf to printer , But REXX command that allows to do this would be very interesting for many users, like me.

There is any option for force check in all cases the drive c?
Maybe /FORCE and /AC, which are...
Yes, it works as expected and also quite well  ;): just got a dirty flag on my boot drive (C:\), the next reboot performed a deeply check on it and an autocheck on other disks/volumes. So, if you don't have an hang which mark your boot drive as "dirty", this statement simply check disks as does /AUTOCHECK:* (and always boot drive), otherwise you got a deeply check (the /F:3 switch, which sets your desired check level).
Good to know.
This incredible OS/2  ;D !

This no work for me, as Pete explain. Because I am running in jfs v1.09.06 in me pc with ecs2.0 and in ecs2.2b2.

It is very easy when you're changing fonts forget to restart the computer, and if you want to use the font without restarting , this causes a system failure or a failure in the application. After this is when I see that the jfs, said that the system is clean, but not is clean, in ecs20.
