Applications / Re: Turning ArcaOS into Warp Server
« on: October 07, 2019, 05:02:27 pm »
Martin,

In an email exchange with Alex  Taylor some years ago he suggests installing LAN Server fixpack IP08608 after installing the WSeB networking install.

It has been a few years since I have done this and I don't remember if I ever installed the fix pack or not.

I have done this twice with ECS systems, the last one being ecs 2.2 beta. If you are doing a fresh ECS install you need to select the IBM file and print sharing components during the ECS install otherwise the install hangs - at least it did for me.  Don't know what happens with AOS install. When you run \IBMLAN\INSTALL\LANINST.EXE, select TAILORED and then select UNINSTALL it will remove the file and print sharing components, which you will replace with WSeB network install.

I don't know if it is SNAP itself, or other components of AOS, but on my SMP machine running old SNAP/ECS 2.2 beta the machine/desktop would freeze  - usually right after the desktop background appeared, but also sometimes later. The freeze did not happen with Panorama.  With AOS 5.0 and new SNAP on the same machine I have no problems with the machine freezing.    I did have a problem with the machine crashing periodically when the desktop started to appear with new SNAP, which AN tracked to down to how LCD fonts were being loaded, and sent me a patch.

Dave,

Thanks for the info on mozturbo.  I will try mozturbo and see if it makes any difference. And look at the trp and popup log.

I am on an 80 mbs download speed connection - comcast cable

It is marked for loading into high memory. I do not use mozturbo. I don't know what trp or popup log is/are.

The issue exists for version 38 as well as version 45 - but happens more often with version 45.

I should be more specific on the download issue.  On the options - General page, if I select Downloads to "save files to" and specify a directory, the download will happen. If I select "Always ask me where to save files", when I try to download a file a dialog box comes up asking for me to chose: "Open With" or "Save file".  If I chose "Save File" and click OK nothing happens. If I chose "Open with" the download will happen.

Clearing out the profile (deleting everything in the mozilla home directory) makes everything work again. Sometimes for just a few hours. Sometimes for a few weeks.

I also have issues with 45.9.0 that seem to be related to the profile.

1) After working correctly for a while, the download will stop working. Or rather download to a specific location stops working. Downloading to the download folder continues to work
2) Firefox will just disappear while displaying a page.

Clearing out the profile will fix both problems - for awhile.

It is the M5A78L-M USB3.

The motherboard has USB2 and USB3. The on-motherboard network chip works, as does the audio.  However I have inserted an Intel Pro 1000 network adapter because I found, for some reason, that adapter and driver works better with Netbios and the WPS than the on-board network chip.  The on-board network chip works fine for TCP/IP., and it works fine on the WSeB server in server function.

I am using WSeB as a file server, and connecting to the WSeB via netbios.  The Netbios performance issues showed up two ways: 1) copying a file from one machine to another from the command prompt took FOREVER, and 2) the first time I would open a WPS drive object for a drive on the server it took 20 to 30 seconds, or more, for the drive object to populate. This also, for some reason, affected the FOC, making it slow to display at times. But it did not affect Larsen Commander.  Very strange. This was not an issue when connecting to the Samba server running on the WSeB machine.  Installing the Intel network card and driver on the client machine fixed theses issues, regardless of whether the WSeB machine was running the network chipset on the motherboard or the Intel card. I have come to the conclusion the issue was between the chipset driver and the WPS.

Dariusz,

I have three machines. All three use the same motherboard (Asus M5A78L-M) and the same processor (AMD FX4350).

One machine runs eComstation, WSeB, Panorama and is hooked to a Dell 27 inch monitor.

The second machine runs Win7. The third runs AOS with SNAP and has an ATI X600 video card.  The second and third machines are connected to two Samsung 27 inch monitors as dual head with two VGA KVM switches. The Win7 machine has a DVI to VGA adapter so that it can hook to the KVM. The ATI X600 has a y cable that converts the output socket on the video card into two VGA signals. (You can get Y cables for the x600  to convert to 2 DVI, 2 VGA, or 1 DVI and 1 VGA)

When I got my first 27 inch monitor a few years ago (the Samsung) I tried it both as DVI and as VGA. The VGA actually looked clearer when running OS/2.  Plus VGA KVMs are cheaper than DVI. Since VGA seemed to have a clearer picture (the lettering/fonts were clearer) and the KVMs are cheaper I have no really pressing desire to use DVI.

I have not run benchmarks on Panorama verses SNAP. But I can't see any speed or performance difference in OS/2 between the SNAP machine and the Panorama machine. Both run videos (using VLC) just fine. Both scroll text in EPM or other editors as fast as I can drag the cursor, and drag windows across the desktop the same. I also cannot see any video performance differences between the Win7 machine and the AOS machine. The Win7 machine is using the video chipset on the motherboard; the AOS is using the ATI x600 card plugged into a slot.

The big advantages of SNAP over Panorama are 1) dual head function, 2) SNAP blanks out the screen after a certain amount of time and Panorama does not, 3) SNAP runs Win-OS2 sessions better, or at all.  However the Win-OS2 function of Panorama verses SNAP may be related to the machines (and their bios) that I happen to be running Panorama on verses the the machines I am running SNAP on.

It used to be that Panorama was very slow compared to SNAP. My experience now is there is no noticeable difference performance wise. I am also running Panorama on an Lenovo i5 2013 vintage laptop and the performance is fine; but Win-OS2 doesn't work.

I also noticed a few months ago that there are now "dual channel" KVMs that support two inputs for each machine and have two outputs, so you can use a dual monitor setup between multiple machines without having to use two KVMs, like I am using. I have seen them for both VGA and DVI.

Andre,

Executing the program
/**/
CALL RxFuncAdd 'SysSetObjectData','RexxUtil','SysSetObjectData'
CALL SysSetObjectData '\\server1\cdrive\CONFIG.SYS','OPEN=SETTINGS'
EXIT

opens a WPS object for \\server1\cdrive\config.sys - as shown in the first attachment.

Just for kicks, I created a WPS object for the Win-OS2 Notepad.exe application, and entered
\\req1\cdrive\config.sys in the parameters.   req1 is the machine I was working on, i.e. the current machine.

The Win-OS2 Notepad opened the file \\req1\cdrive\config.sys - without converting the file name to a drive letter, even though \\req1\cdrive  = c:\

I have a dual head display and it changed my life.

After getting the memory used by SNAP adjusted (down) to what was really needed, I haven't really had any issues.   Well - none other than the fact that some applications place their dialog boxes exactly in the middle of the desktop, some size themselves when they start up to cover the entire desktop, and some are smart enough to put their dialog boxes in the middle of display 1. But other than that it works great. And I have been surprised at how much I enjoy, and how useful it is, to have a 3840 wide desktop.

Plus the SNAP dual display works better in AOS than the ATI dual display in Windows 7 in a number of ways, e.g. xCenter spans both monitors, the background bitmap spans both monitors, you don't have to have PmView in the monitor that you are going capture a screen shot in when you start the capture, etc.

Since failure is an option, I've taken care of UNCs by checking that the 2nd character is a ":". The API does understand specs like NUL, which expands to \DEV\NUL, so if an user with a network is lucky then e.g. \\SERVER\BMP\ECS24.BMP will be converted to O:\BMP\ECS24.BMP.

Andre,

I am not sure I am completely understanding this thread, but I don't believe DosQueryPathInfo converts a UNC name to a drive letter type path/name.

The progarm PATHSTUFF in the attachment executes DosQueryPathInfo with FIL_QUERYFULLNAME to get the fully qualified path, and again with FIL_STANDARD to get the dates. In the attachment \\server1\ddrive is mapped to the drive letter q:

If you are trying to distinguish between a device and a file for an argument passed to your program, perhaps DosQueryPathInfo would work. It appears to return error codes (invalid name, invalid access) when devices are passed to it as file names. Perhaps that would work.  If you are trying to distinguish between a directory and a file, I am at a loss.

Programming / Re: fully programmatic menu creation?
« on: September 08, 2019, 12:23:44 am »
If you are willing to consider using a specific compiler and library one alternative is using the IBM Open Class Library. I am attaching some sample code for dynamically creating menus in code without resources from the book Power GUI Programming with VisualAge C++ .  The book describes the library that came with VisualAge C++ version 3, but version 4 also has similar capabilities.

I don't see any irony in using a GUI library to create a GUI library.  Especially since the Open Class Library never included Mac or Linux.

Applications / Re: A comprehensive guide to Odin available?
« on: August 25, 2019, 01:23:49 am »
I believe ArcaOS creates an ODIN folder in the Programs folder on the Desktop. That folder contains the user manual - such as it is.

I have attached the user manual and readme to this post.

Part of the problem with running Win32 programs in ODIN is getting them installed. ODIN only runs Win32 code and many of the early Win32 programs used installers that were 16 bit or mixed 16 bit and 32 bit. There is information about on overcoming those issues for some installers. Otherwise you have to manually install the program

The other issue appears to be around printing. It appears that ODIN doesn't handle printing very well, and some programs that rely on printing (word processors, report writers, etc.) have issues. Although if Microsoft Office runs then that may not be an issue.

Having said that I have created a Win32 program in Delph4 which runs in ODIN (it does no printing).

Utilities / Re: DB2 WIN-OS2 ODBC and ReportSmith

I don't have v7 DB2 for OS/2 (still looking), but I will be installing IBM's Small Business Suite for Linux which includes DB2 v7.1. .

Sean,

I am surprised you don't have version 7. IBM has made available a free version of DB2 since version 5 - it was called (in version 5, 6 and 7) Personal Edition.  IBM still provides a free version of DB2 (although not for OS/2), as does Oracle and Microsoft and I think Sybase. It isn't called personal edition anymore but it is a complete version and its only limitation (if I remember correctly) is in the size of the database.  What you don't get in any of the free versions is support - but that it to be expected.

I will find my copy in the (agh) basement and look again at the copyright stuff. But if it was free then, and they still release a free version, I don't see why it can't be posted on Hobbes. If anyone knows differently please let me know.

Utilities / DB2 WIN-OS2 ODBC and ReportSmith
« on: August 17, 2019, 12:40:48 am »
Sean and I have been conversing through messenging on the site about DB2/2 and WinOS2 and IBM's WinOS2 CAE.

I wrote an article a number of years ago about databases and ODBC. In that article I said that the DB2 version 5 CAE for WinOS2 did not work very well, and that IBM had instituted a "2 versions back, 1 version forward" policy on CAEs and server versions. This meant that the DB2 version 2 WinOS2 CAE and ODBC driver, which works well in WinOS2, would not work connect with DB2 version 7. All of that, to the best of my knowledge, is still true.

I have discovered since then however what appears to be a work around for getting the version 5 DB2 CAE and ODBC driver for WinOS2 to work - which means you can connect from WinOS2 to DB2 version 7 - which is the last version of server released for OS/2.

The work around that appears to work is to install the DB2 version 5 CAE for Windows 3.1, connect to your database using the IBM WinOS2 Command Line Processor in a WinOS2 session, and leave the command line processor running and connected, before attempting to connection with any other application.

(This is an obvious issue when attempting to connect Windows 3.1 applications to DB2 in a seamless session. I think I have a work around for that also but it is not ready yet.)

The second issue Sean had was running ReportSmith in WinOS2 and connecting to DB2.  ReportSmith is, in my opinion, and excellent report writer, very cheap and readily available. It is bundled with Delphi versions 1 and 2 which you can pick up on ebay for $5 - $15. The trick in getting ReportSmith to connect to DB2 is to remove the word DB2 from the description of the driver in ODBC.INI and ODBCINST.INI located in C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2. I have attached my ODBC.INI and ODBCINST.INI to show how it is done. The thing to remember however is the IBM DB2 Client Setup won't work unless the DB2 is in the description. So get the client setup, THEN alter ODBC.INI and ODBCINST.INI.

Hope this helps Sean
