Hi Pete,

Are you sure the network is an RTL8186E chip?  A friend has one of these boards in his gaming computer and it has an RTL8111E lan chip - at least that is what is shown using specky (a windows third party program that shows everything that is installed).

I have to agree with you there Martin.  The fact that we have the source code means that it should be possible to find out what is causing the problems and possibly fix them.

One other thing I did find is that after I tried it several of my standard programs would no longer work.  I tried to use Gotcha to do a screen grab but it would not start, for example.  In the end I had to reboot the computer to get back to normal.

If I have time tonight I will try and find our OS/2 v2 floppies and see if I can install it into a VM and then run Escriba there, might be fun ;)

Having a very quiet time on the night shift I decided to give this program a try.

I am quite surprised that an OS/2 v2.x program works as well as this does on out WSeB boxes.

There are a couple of annoying aspects: it does not like my 28 inch (1920x1200) high resolution screen - there is a pronounced flickering which I assume is due to this being written for the standard monitors of the day. The second thing is in the font selection menu and the formatting menu - a half dozen fonts display at what appears to 48 point as do the font type (bold, underline, etc).  I don't know if this is an artefact of how it reacts to the large display or not but I will do more investigation as the night goes on.

Did you put COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 at the end of the config.sys on the second diskette?  This ensures that the necessary drivers are copied from the diskettes to the hard drive.

edit:  This is taken from the readme.os2 of WSeB.

To add a new device driver to the installation diskettes:

1.  If your device driver requires a BASEDEV= statement in the
CONFIG.SYS file, add your device driver to Diskette 1.
Otherwise, the device driver uses a DEVICE= statement, and
    is copied to Diskette 2.

2.  Modify the CONFIG.SYS file on Diskette 1 as follows:

    a.  Make sure the following statement exists in the CONFIG.SYS
        file:

            SET SAVECONNECT=1

    b.  Add the following statement to ensure the device driver is
        copied throughout the installation process:

            SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1

    c.  Add the appropriate statements to the CONFIG.SYS file:

            BASEDEV=driver_name <parameters>
            DEVICE=driver_name <parameters>

Why don't you use yum? It is just a matter of seconds to install an updated FF. No need to chase after dll anymore. It is already available and saves time of the developers to setup another package.

For one very simple reason, it is not certified to work with OS/2 and we are not going to spend the money to try and get it certified even if IBM would do so now.  It is accepted that a working browser is needed since the old one from IBM no longer works with many sites.  Likewise we were able to get he use of Lucide accepted as a replacement for the ancient adobe reader.  Just remember what can be used by individuals at home is not what can be used in industry.

Thank you Silvan, up and running now.

Since you list all the external DLLs in the readme I would like to ask for you to do the same as Dave does and make up a zip file containing all these DLLs at the required levels since there appears to be no way of knowing what level the DLL already installed is.  This would ensure that the ordinary person can install and run the software without having to chase after DLLs, something made more difficult if you know you have the DLL already on your system - as in my case, I checked that I had the DLLs available, they just were not the correct age.

It is very simple.  Just highlight the first section you want to quote and copy it, click on the 'insert quote' icon and past what you copied between the bracket quote bracket and the bracket /quote bracket, add your comments, repeat as necessary.

Hi Andi B,

Quote
Currently the only way to keep dlls which are needed for ported software in a current consistent state is yum/rpm. No one offers a better way for doing this so it makes absolutely no sense to constantly ranting about. Come up with a better solution and I'm willing to discuss the pro and cons.

In actual fact it isn't.  We have a policy that we have to adhere to for our clients, we can't use anything that is not approved and in the case of anything going onto the machine control computers certified.  This means that we can not use RPM/YUM as I doubt it would get approval and certainly not certification.

We get round this by having either program objects that are very specific in how they start and run a program or programs are started by command files, again with very specific parameters.

At the moment I am experimenting with using a directory directly off the root of the boot drive to hold all these extraneous DLLs that is listed in the libpath of config.sys.  This works and because I back it up before any additions are made it is very easy to go back to what was working if anything breaks (I have had to do this a couple of times).

Now back to Qpdfview.

Looking over the zip files of Qpdfview I find that v0.4.9 and v0.4.10 both have some of the required DLLs included while later versions do not.  Also reading the README from the latest source it appears there are a number of options that can be used when building, some of which would solve some of the problems we are seeing - for instance, not everyone can get CUPS printing to work so why is it a built in requirement and must be installed for this port to work?

You would think that the qpdfview zip file would include all the required DLLs because they all appear to be dependant on each other and you have install them all for anything to work.

Since they are all required DLLs is it too difficult to adjust qpdfview.exe such that it looks in its install directory first to find what it wants in the way of support files?

Since most uses of qpdfview is to read pdf files (at least here it is) why not allow users to select what other features they want to use and give a page in the settings that allows the user to give the whereabouts of such things as ghostscript, cups and freetype/fontconfig?

Because of problems with the last few builds of qpdfview we have now standardised on the last lucide build, for both us and our clients, for reading pdf files and ghostscript for printing where necessary.

Martin, it might be a good idea for you to talk with Jan van Wijk (DFSee) about this.  I think he would know much more than any of us.

Erich,

There is a way of not using the install floppies and getting an updated bootable cd at the same time.

For that you need a working OS/2 install and updcd http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/updcd.htm Download updcd and install it then add the fixes, updates and anything else you want on the list, let it run and build the updated bootable iso that can be used with virtualbox.

That is how we created our first master install disk which then changed over time to the dvd we now use which includes utilities and many of the base programs we use on our workstations.

Andi B, it is strange because if they were interested in selling OS/2 (eCS) base operating system they would be telling all the OS/2 sites and the computing tech journals - they might even send out a press release but not a word from them.  It is as if they no longer exist except for a rather indifferent web page.

edit:  I should add that the last time I went looking at what they offer under operating systems there was Mac OS and Linux but absolutely no mention of OS/2 or eCS.

XEU and their resellers are the only ones who sell licences.

Strange that they are keeping very quiet about that.  I would have thought they would be shouting it to the rooftops.

The one question that everyone has been skating round, 'where do we get new copies of OS/2 (eCS) from' has not been answered.

Arca Noae say they are concentrating on addons and enhancements to OS/2 and have implied that will not be selling the base operating system.  That is all very well but without the base operating system there is only a finite number of existing OS/2 users to purchase these new addons - a self defeating business plan.

Now, will someone please enlighten us as to where we are going to get new, as in new licence, versions of OS/2.
