Joachim, regarding the USB keyboard.

Is the problem with any USB keyboard or just a Chinese one?

If it is all USB keyboards then you have a big problem which may have nothing to do with the keyboard as such but how the USB stack interacts with the Chinese localisation.

If it is just a problem with a Chinese USB keyboard then you need to look at the way the keyboard communicates with the USB stack and look at the possibility of needing a conversion layer between USBKBD.SYS and KEYBOARD.DCP .

The other thing to look at is a different brand of Chinese USB keyboard.  At least that solved a similar problem for a friend in Thailand.

Dave, You know more about the nuts and bolts of the OS than I do from a practical point of view (for which I, and others, are very thankful) and I think I agree with you.  It was a quiet night shift - it is a national holiday here today - and I was indulging myself in a nice dream.

I don't care a great deal about what goes on under the WPS as long as the WPS keeps on working as it does at the moment.  The only other thing about that from my clients point of view is that whatever acts as the 'engine' must be able to be certified.

My reason for looking at 64 bit is that we have a server that I would love to max out with processors and memory and still use WSeB.

Martin, I too don't want to shut any doors but it is rather strange that Joachim should start two topics which essentially say nothing and then does not answer any of the point raised in those topics.

Regarding an individual compilation of OS/2, while that is possible for individuals (we have disk images for each of our servers and workstations) it does not address the problem of new licences for the base OS/2 - something we can no longer get from IBM.  The other idea is to make a DVD of all the programs that are used and individuals might want to install (we have that as well including a /dll directory containing all the extra dlls that it now appears we must have to run anything, the install scripts include adding that /dll directory to the libpath).

If you can work out a way of getting OS/2 without needing a licence then I am prepared to use that version in a disk image and make it available to all.  What I would like to see is the whole OS/2 being converted to 64 bit, although 32 bit would do for a start,  I know there is a 32 bit CMD implementation but it needs everything from networking (IPV6) and up with some sort of VM built in to enable use of 16 bit windows applications.  In other words I would love to see everything (except the win 16) on the WSeB install CD changed up to 64 bit and then have the necessary 64bit drivers included on WSeB CD2.  I know it isn't very likely to happen but I too can dream.

Greg, the problem is that we DO NOT KNOW anything about version 2.2.

Joachim just pops in and says 'I have a piece of vapour-ware you might be interested in, just give money and it might arrive and do something - sometime'.

That is not the sort of thing that engenders confidence in the product - if they in fact actually have one.  Joachim and XEU are going to have to work very hard and produce a viable demonstration before many people will believe them.

At the moment confidence level in them producing something that will work 'out of the box' is zero.

Hi Joachim,

No comments on the comments on the other topic you started.?

I doubt that many people here are interested in how well you are doing with  IBANC (SEPA) software unless it runs on OS/2 and has a use beyond large companies processing credit information.

What we are interested in is EXACTLY what you are doing with eCS.  Just how much of the base operating system you have updated and if there has been patching of the kernel have those patches been approved by IBM and validated for use in a validated system.

As it appears at the moment there is very little you can do to OS/2 (the base OS) so all you are actually talking about are the add-ons and maybe tweaking of the installer.

How soon can we get a factual list of what will be new in eCS 2.2 - not a list of what you hope might be there?  Until such a list is available version 2.2 is still vapour-ware - not something to tell clients to expect sometime.

Sorry if this sounds hard, it is intended to be, but there has been absolutely no information from Mensys or XEU for well over 2 years.  As a consequence of that don't expect to be welcomed with open arms unless you have something to actually show, something like a demo VM that shows all the abilities of eCS, connects to the local network and printers and allows the reading of disks in things like a NAS box.

Is that because both of those programs rely heavily on ODIN code?

You also realise, I hope, that by using uncertified patches on an IBM kernel means that that kernel can't be used where system certification is required.  This was one of the arguments that was used against the OS/4 kernel project.  Obviously what goes round comes round.

Hi Ian,

I have the manual for Watermarker-3 as a PDF file just under 2Mb if you are interested.

If those images are in a folder you can tell the program to mark all those in that folder.  It will also mark photos in a folder and sub folders (did that for a friend who wanted to put some pictures up on facebook but weren't sure which ones so I did them all).

Joachim said In the coming weeks we will continue to clean up the bugtracker and work towards the release of eComStation 2.2.

Is this like it was in 2013, then 2014 and now more than half way through 2015?

Somehow I don't believe it will happen.  I would like to be proved wrong but past experience shows otherwise.

The items mentioned by Joachim are rather minor and have been addressed already by other people.  If they are the types of things on the bugtracker I can see why they will never open that to general view - it appears to be rather pathetic.

Now, if they were working on updated drivers to work with new hardware and updated SNAP Graphics, again to allow use with new graphic cards then it would indeed be news.  As it stands this 'announcement' is rather meaningless.

Hi Joop,

Sorry, I have been using them for so long they are part of the background way of doing things and since the versions I have do what I want I haven't bothered looking to see if they have been updated.

PDFTweak: http://jpdftweak.sourceforge.net/

Watermarker:  http://sourceforge.net/projects/watermarkimages/files/  I am using version 3

Hi Joop,  I have been using PDFSaM for quite some time now.  Another PDF manipulation program I use is JPDFTweak.  Then there is Watermarker for adding copyright to pictures to go into PDFs.

For those that want to pass on information to Dave his e-mail is dwparsons[at]t-online.de  (replace [at] with the correct symbol).

As I said it works with our Asus M4A78LT-M motherboards with AMD 4 core processors.  Where we didn't have anything but system sounds we can now play CDs and audio files as well as getting sound from VLC.

I think it will be hell here at work in the morning as everyone tries this out.  Thankfully I have the morning off.

Hi Mentore,

Dave Parsons has just put up on hobbes a PMUniMix that appears to find all the 'missing' inputs and outputs on various boards.  At least on all the machines here that could not play any sounds other than system sounds.  It found 9 controls while the mixer with uniaud only found 2.

Joop, I think I remember someone on the jalbum forum http://jalbum.net/forum saying that the new version 12.xx requires java 7 which we don't have so it is not surprising that you are getting strange faults which appear to be unrelated to java (something in our java not available or it is trying to call something in LIBC that is not there or in an unexpected way).

Hardware / Re: Unexeptable printer speed.
« on: June 25, 2015, 08:06:38 pm »
Hi Einar,

Being a fairly quiet night last night I was able to have a good read of the printer manual.

Two things stood out, no Linux drivers and no detailed specifications.  I did manage to find the specifications on the Epson site where they mention 20 ppm single side and 10 ppm double side measured by the ISO standard.  It is noted that these speeds are for windows drivers and that OSx does not have all the features and may not (read will not) get those speeds.

I then went on to look at the print technology used.  It needs quite a lot of processor power and memory just to run the heads and that assumes that the PS and PCL emulation software supplies the page image in exactly the way the print head software expects to see it (this is why there are no Linux drivers and OSx has some problems).

This brings me back to the fact this printer is a sophisticated winprinter, while it will print postscript and PCL it is going to be very slow if anyone uses anything other than windows.

It appears that it is the win drivers that do the the multiple page preparation and send each page to the printer as soon as its buffer is empty.  I have been, so far, unable to find a service manual for the printer which would usually give more information about the printer firmware and what the onboard processor actually does and where it stores all of its font information (HD???).

I don't think you are going to see very much of a speed increase, if any, by changing how it is connected to your computer. USB, WiFi, network cable will all transfer faster than the printer can handle what it considers as non standard input which it then has to convert for use by the print engine.

That might be fine but I can't find an OS/2 port of <b>nmap.</b>  Do you have one you can tell me where to download from?

My friend used Netscan because he used to use windows and when I set him up with OS/2 we used a VM to run winXP for those programs that weren't available on OS/2 at the time.  Now, Netscan is the only program we haven't been able to find a native OS/2 program, or port, for.
