Applications / Re: Favorite/Required non-opensource OS/2-eCs apps?
« on: May 19, 2015, 04:53:54 pm »
Hi All

My favourite apps that are not open source - not in order of importance or use:-

RSJ - mainly used for burning CD copies for in car use

PMView - a great image viewer

Embellish - useful for editing images

Hoblink - useful for running x11 apps eg mediatomb

Cleanini - for those pre-eCS2.2b2 systems without DMT aka Desktop Maintenance Tool

INITools - useful tools for editing INI files

DFSee - the only times that this app has failed to recover data from crashed hard drives is when the drives have failed due to physical damage, ie detached read/write heads, or the drive electronics have failed making the drive totally inaccessible

BS_Info - comprehensive system information tool with links to various configuration tools

USB - aka USBcfg - having changed 2 mainboards recently this provided a quick way to check what USB controllers are on the new mainboards and reset config.sys files accordingly; apart from that I might as well plug my own app  ;-)

VirtualPC for OS/2 - not used that often these days as I cannot to figure out how to install Windows7 32bit into a vpc from the Windows7 Ultimate DVD; Could anyone who knows how to do this create a "How To" in a new thread please

RPF Zip Control - I still like this for zipping/unzipping

Association Editor - useful tool for setting what app *you* want to open what file type/filter

Looking at the above does make me realise just how much open source software I use and that I am more likely to be using OpenOffice, Seamonkey, WDSibyl, dvddao, ghostview and various other open source apps rather than any of the non-open source apps during the course of a "computing day".

Hi All

I seem to recall switching resolutions "on the fly" (without rebooting) was possible with a beta build of Scitech Display Doctor - but this ability disappeared in the release build. Sorry, cannot remember which SDD beta build and no longer have any of the SDD builds in my backup system.

Hi RBRI

Instead of rebooting when the screen comes up black/with flicker/compressed size simply turn off the monitor and then turn back on - works every time here.

I've been using dualcore/quadcore cpus with SNAP since 2004, or thereabouts, and have rarely had a Desktop freeze problem - guess I could just be lucky so far  :-)

However, it is definitely good news that SNAP will be getting updated as it will get more difficult over time to purchase good condition ATI X series cards supported by the current SNAP - and, of course, bug fixes are always welcome  :-)

Hardware / Re: SoundBlaster SB4740 Driver (SB 4740)
« on: May 14, 2015, 12:46:18 am »
Hi klipp

It is definitely possible to have sound for guests in VPC for OS/2 - and you do not need a soundblaster to do it. I have had success with every onboard and PCI soundcard I've tried; it does not matter what the physical hardware is as long as it works OK - usually with uniaud - as VPC provides a *virtual SB16 soundcard" for Windows guests.

I have in my VPC root directory a file called sound.txt, I think I picked it up in an internet forum or newsgroup, which contains:-

Virtual PC for OS/2 by default disables sound for guest systems. This is done to prevent problems such as distorted sound, system traps, lockups, etc. due to buggy OS/2 sound drivers. For most sound drivers, it is recommended to not turn on sound support. The worst results can be experienced with the drivers from Crystal (ISA and PCI) - usually system traps. In case you have a sound driver that can handle small buffers and high interrupt rates well (e.g. Soundblaster Live! or UNIAUD from IBM), you can try to enable sound support.

To enable sound in VPC/2 guests type:

CD VIRTUALPC
VPCSETUP /TWEAKVPC
check "Enable Sound in virtual machines"

On the next restart of VPC, your guest should have sound (of course, you still have to install a SB16 sound driver in your guest... or in case of Win9x/2K/XP, let the autodetection find the virtual SB16 card and install the driver...)
voila!

Obviously the line "CD VIRTUALPC" would need to be changed to fit your system.

Hope the above is of help

Hi Martin

Have a read through http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0802H/vnewsf6.htm for an example of using rdc.

Hardware / Re: SoundBlaster SB4740 Driver (SB 4740)
« on: May 12, 2015, 12:50:11 am »
Hi klipp

What does uniaud report during boot? - I use this line in config.sys to Pause boot and read (some) driver output:-

DEVICE=H:\OS2\BOOT\PauseIt.sys

To check uniaud output I would add the above line just after the DEVICE=H:\MMOS2\UNIAUD16.SYS /V /C line.

The file \OS2\BOOT\PauseIt.sys does not exist so boot stops with a complaint about a missing file and a "Press Enter to continue..." which allows plenty of time to note down driver output.

If the driver seems to identify the hardware and load fine then you need to check the mixer settings are OK. Use the following command in a command window open in \MMOS2:-

unimix -list > unimixer.txt

Open unimixer.txt, with a text editor, and check if playback switches and volume are set correctly; if not try to turn on switches/set volume levels.

I seem to recall the SB CT4740 card is an older card, Soundblaster 512?, and have vague memories of an older driver that *may* work if uniaud will not. A quick hunt through  http://www.os2usr.org/os2sound.html  suggests this is what I am thinking of http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/system/drivers/sound/sbliveos2-081b.zip

Hope something above helps

Hi Martin

Sometimes you can open a file with a text editor to find out a little about the file:-

-  PMCTL.MSG  -  contains what looks like error messages; probably for PMCTLS.DLL

-  PMCTL.REP  -  contains what looks like the title
                         ' P M  C o n t r o l  T e m p l a t e  f i l e '
and is related to displaying messages from PMCTL.MSG

The text editor trick does not really help with DLL files though

-  PMMRGRES.DLL  -  contains the current "window theme"; this url may be of interest http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0802H/vnewsf6.htm

-  PMVDMH.DLL  -  I could only guess at this; and my guess would probably be wrong...   :-)

Applications / Re: Firefox plugins stop working
« on: May 09, 2015, 05:06:48 pm »
Hi Neil

Does Firefox have an Addons/Plugins Manager?  -  check that plugins are recognised and Enabled in the Profiles with the non-working plugins.

Silly question: What plugins do you have installed?

I ask because there do not seem to be many required; I only have mplayer and flash - I'll probably add IcedTea if/when it gets to GA. If you have old mmos2 plugins installed (Netscape Multimedia Pack?) I wonder if they could be causing problems.

General Discussion / Re: Xeu/Mensys download

Hi All

Despite having 2 copies of eCS2.1 I can no longer download download the 2.1 iso files from Mensys as they are no longer listed in my Downloads. Looks like the usual "housekeeping cockups" by Mensys...

A contact for xeu is  shop@xeu.com

Hi Mentore

I just tried unimix -powerget:-

[H:\MMOS2]unimix -powerget
Command line mixer for UNIAUD. Version 0.05
Copyright 2004,2005 by Netlabs.org
Written by Vlad Stelmahosky aka Vladest
Detected UNIAUD version 1.92
Detected 2 audio adapter(s)
power state: 0

[H:\MMOS2]

If power state: 0 is "Off" why do I have system sounds, audio playback from media players and seamonkey plugins?

I notice that we are using differnet builds of uniaud and unimix - I must get around to updating sometime.

I also notice that you are using a different uniaud to the build you thought you were using:-

Playing with unimix options on Uniaud 1.09.06 I tried the powerget option and got

[D:\]unimix -powerget
Command line mixer for UNIAUD32. Version 1.1
Detected UNIAUD version 2.02.01

I suggest checking that you have the correct \mmos2\dll\uniaud.dll to go with the installed build of uniaud as a mis-match could cause problems.

Have you got a list of mixer controls and checked if the required switches are enabled and volume levels set?

Hi Mentore

If System Sounds are not working make sure that there is a sound scheme selected - for some reason that setting seems to simply disappear every now and again to be replaced by <none> on my eCS2.1 system.

If that does not help I would guess that the problem is either no output volume or output is not enabled.

Try running this command:-

unimix -list > mixer.txt

Then open mixer.txt in an editor and look for the following Controls:-

[Master Playback Switch] - make sure it is On ie Value 1

[Master Playback Volume] - make sure it has a value (much) greater than 0; set it to max (probably 64) to make sure

You need to use unimix to set the values eg:-

unimix -id[whatever the id number of the control is] -val[value to set control to] -cnt[count value of the control to change]

Running this command will save the unimix "help" into a text file:-

unimix > unimix.txt

Hope the above is of some help

Pete

Hi klipp

i suspect you will have to do some investigating to answer your question  :-)

This mfc looks like it *may* suit your needs http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=B3Q10A&opt=B19&sel=PRN#merch-tech-specs

Good luck on your mfc hunt - and let us know how you get on.

Hi Dave

Looks like I need more than just the magic.dll installed then.

Guess I'll have to see what is required and where to install to.

The "WARNING: magic_load: could not find any magic files!" does not seem to cause any problems though.
