General Discussion / Re: Hobbes Retirement
« on: January 27, 2024, 11:05:44 pm »
Hi Martin,

I didn't mean it as a  slur on you but as a reflection of what we see over here in Europe about the stupidity going on in US universities and their likely reaction to an outsider showing them up with you careful reorganising of one of their facilities.  In fact it was voiced by a friend of mine when I mentioned that the site was shutting down.

I would offer to host the site but my l;ink speed is rather slow and congestion is a killer as I found out when I  downloaded a new copy of Linux Mint.

Martin have you considered that your reorganising Hobbes files might be the cause of it being shut down because they had to have someone monitoring all the time rather than it just running with computer monitoring?

The answer, if you insist on using the old video card, is to try the Panorama VESA driver and if it works use it.  That is what I use on my Ryzen with built in graphics and it pushes 1920x1200 without problems.

Hardware / Re: The last nail in OS/2's coffin

Has anyone considered that AMD might not blindly follow Intel down this road?  I see this as an attempt by Intel to gain relevance.

This sounds very much like desperation on the part of Intel, they are seeing AMD taking over the desktop processor market with far better processors so they need something, anything, to get in front again.

Setup & Installation / Re: Are there any 8GB Nvme compatiable motherboard

It sounds as if you have something like I do - a number of monitors connected to several computers via KVM switches except my KVMs are HDMI/usb units and all the monitors are 16:10 units (the extra height pixels make all the difference).  I am now playing with the idea of connecting the computers that are upstairs to the three monitors on the middle floor to save me having to run up and down two flights of stairs to keep an eye on what is going on.

I had several vga push button KVM switches but decided to go with hdmi auto switching when a new computer comes on line plus the length of hdmi cable is much greater than vga and the switching is by a remote push button unit so the actual switch unit can be tucked out of the way behind the computers.  Any thing to make life easier considering I'm 80 plus.

Hi Doug,

Yes it sees all 4GB.

A question, what 2 monitors are you using?  I have a 28 inch HDMI 16:10 (1920x1200) which allows my old eyes to see all I need.

Hi Doug,

Depends on what processor you want to use.
If you are happy with AMD Ryzen processors then you could look at the MSI B550 A-Pro.  I have one with a Ryzen third gen processor with the built in video.  I have kept it to the 4GB memory that OS/2 can use.  I would suggest that you download the PDF manual for it and check it is what you want - I can't say anything about Intel processors because I stopped using their over priced units when AMD came out with their 486 processor.

Networking / Re: ArcaMapper and Network Protocols

Both of my NAS boxes (DNS-323 and DNS-320) are accessible from all my computers on the local network including OS/2, ArcaOS and Linux mint using the code Paul supplied on the Linux boxes.

For those that might be concerned that I am leaving the network open to the world I have it behind a TP-Link R600VPN v4 unit.

Hi Andrew,

I assume you know we have a working version of OpenOffice for OS/2 - It works very well when friends bring spreadsheets and complicated docs that don't print well from their windows machines.  There is also Lucide and GSView (which requires Ghostscript to work).

Hi David,

Attached is my archive zip of cleanini including the text file.

It is still available from the DFSee site.

Hi mauro,

One other thing you might try is to delete the DFSee partition then run xfix and or checkini with the parameters /C /H /T  Doing that will remove a lot of useless info from the ini files.

Setup & Installation / Re: Broken AOS-5.1 Trash Can
« on: January 14, 2024, 01:26:15 pm »
Hi Andrew,

It appears you have two problems.  The first is the trash can which I assume is a feature of Aos- 5.1 because I don't have it on any of my Aos-5.0.7 computers (I don't have Aos-5.1).
The second is why you are using it?  My experience with the windows computer problems of friends usually start with the trash can.  I have never seen a valid use of it - there are ways of undeleting files if you haven't overwritten them.

Now to your main concern - that of losing all the effort you have put in to get Aos to where you want it, for that you can do what I do - use DFSee to make an image of your boot partition plus all the other partitions for work and storage you have and store them externally to the computer (dare I say nas box).  By having a dedicated boot partition you can update it, even totally replace it without losing your work.

Attached is the layout of the three hard disks of my main computer to give you an idea of what can be done.

Did you totally remove the old version before you installed v17?  What you are describing sounds as if there are parts of the old version still around especially if you installed it in the previous dir.

Delete the DFSee directory, run clean ini and or xfix, then install the new version.  That is what I do when installing newer versions of existing programs it prevents old information being carried over.
