Hardware / Re: Connexant cx31993 and USB3 stack
« on: November 03, 2023, 07:59:05 pm »
Lars, thanks for the tip. I tried to use /MAXCPU=1, but the clicks were still audible in the sound, and after a while an error appeared for the XHCI driver, exactly the same as what I gave earlier. I tested different devices, they all output clicks and crackles over the sound and some crashed with an XHCI error, some became unavailable in the DART plugin after some time

What if I can’t find another operating system that produces sound of the same quality as OS/2?
If even specially prepared builds of Linux https://www.audio-linux.com/ and Windows https://www.highend-audiopc.com/audiophile-optimizer are not capable of outputting sound of the same quality as OS/2?
And I'm talking about sound quality, and not about the characteristics of the files being played.
Now there is only one problem in OS/2 - these are XHCI controllers to which it is not possible to connect UAC2.0 devices, so that the sound would be played without problems.
Recently, the system has learned to play any audio formats, in any resolution, on USBAudio devices, including over a network, like a DLNA client. It is also loaded into RAM over the network from an 18MB image.
So what, let's drop everything and run to persuade Microsoft to rewrite Windows so that it generates less jitter at the output of the audio stream?
Sorry but no.

At the moment, as far as I know, there are no devices left that can work simultaneously in two UAC classes 1 and 2, each of the classes respectively needs its own drivers.
In your case, you can forget about USBAUDIO.SYS, as Martin correctly said.
For UAC2 devices to work correctly, it is enough to install only the USBAudio package via minstall \* , selecting only USBAudio 2.0.
Crackling and distortion in sound are not related to the operation of the HDD or SSD. They are observed even on a OS/2 5.1 system that runs ENTIRELY from RAM Drive and boots over the network. The distortions, in my opinion, originate from the incorrect operation of USBXHCD.SYS in drivers 11.14. On different USB controllers the type of distortion will be different and in some cases it will even seem almost unnoticeable.
But, most importantly, if you continue to torture your psyche and switch tracks with different formats, listening to crackling and wheezing, then most likely as a result you will see a screen of death with Trap 000e in the USBXHCD module.

A few questions, if I may:
1. Does your UAC 2.0 device work correctly on USB 2.0 ports with EHCI controllers?
2. Have you tried using 10.244 drivers for this device?
3. Have you managed to use other UAC 2.0 devices on USB 3.0 (XHCI) ports?

I will clarify the current status.
USB Audio devices of Class 2.0 on the ports of XHCI controllers do not work stably.
The problems described in the topics above have not yet been solved.
Most devices experience problems with cracking and dropping samples, sometimes slightly noticeable, sometimes very noticeable.
Other devices cannot synchronize the sampling frequency of the audio stream with the signal source the first time. As a result, the playback speed changes.

Unfortunately - AN rejected my ticket to the XHCI driver with this problem.

If there are those who wish to repeat the appeal, use only the release versions of drivers and OS when preparing logs.

If they don't respond, the only advice remaining is: switch over to another OS, Linux or Windows, whatever you prefer.
I am deeply immersed in the topic of sound quality of different operating systems on specially prepared computers. OS/2 in general and OS/4 in particular sounds the best of all systems. If the difference was not fundamental, I would have switched to Windows or Linux a long time ago. There would be much less problems with compatibility.

The descriptors for the Windows firmware version were written correctly. For USB drivers version 12.14, the descriptors are read this way.
On USB drivers version 10.247, the result is completely different - more complete.

By the way, I compared a few descriptors and on the Linux version of the firmware, the files there are the same (It seems).

I also considered the descriptors from the M2tech hiface two device, it really works better, especially if installed in the USB 3.0 XHCI port on a PCIe card. There are no questions about the work at all, and frequency switching works and there are no artifacts in the sound, the device does not support DSD from 44/16 to 192/24. Everything would be fine, but if you plug M2tech into the port of the motherboard, then a crackle in the sound and freezes when executing player commands begins.

In fact, I drew a slightly different conclusion from the situation.
I believe that the problem is in the USB stack from AN and since for both firmware versions your drivers 10.xx are suitable, as long as we don't run into the need to connect the device to the XHCI controller. As soon as the XHCI and USBD driver from AN appears, miracles begin. For example , such:
If there are 2 XHCI controllers in the system and we connect a USB Audio device to the port of the second controller, then playback speeds up - multiple times, and the timer of the player runs very fast and the sound is distorted.
When using the XHCI driver from AN, fatal errors appear, crashes when switching tracks (I mentioned them in the letter).

The fact that there is an acceptable USB audio operation on the EHCI controller ports with firmware for Linux only shows that the EHCI driver can be called selectively working.

By the way, the device on the Amanero controller works fine both under Windows OS on linux firmware and under Linux OS on Windows firmware. There are nuances when switching to DSD format and separate drivers are needed under windows when using the Windows firmware version, which just smooth out these clicks.

It seems to me if there was a 10.250 version of the driver with the file usbxhcd.sys then there would be no such problems in it :-)

Yes, I can save the descriptors. I'll post them here. I have already read the descriptors once, on the previous Amanero device with old firmware. Here they are below and in the attachment.

Amanero is a programmable interface, depending on the firmware, this device can be used for different application environments.
In fact, there are only two branches of current firmware.
I flashed Amanero with two different firmware: for Linux OS and Windows. In order to evaluate their behavior in the OS2 environment.

On the firmware for Linux, the device works fine on USB 12.x drivers from AN + USB Audio 10.244 and those below the version. Starting with version 10.245 USB Audio, there is support for working with XHCI controllers, but there is also a problem of determining the sampling frequency (possible only on Amanero audio adapters, tomorrow I will find out how the XMOS chips behave).

On Windows firmware, the device works fine only with USB + USBAudio 10.xx drivers, and with any versions, including 10.247. On USB 12.xx versions from AN Amanero is not detected. But since a driver for XHCI controllers has not yet been released for version 10.xx, then on my current motherboard I have to use the Amanero firmware for Linux and the USB 12.14 + USB Audio 10.247 drivers. Start playing the track twice when the sampling frequency of the audio file changes.

Have you done a full reinstallation of the 10.247 USB audio driver install package, including all subcomponents that it contains, and not just copying/unzipping files ?
I did two installations of USB audio drivers, on two different systems:
1. On a brand new, fresh ArcaOS, I installed the package via minstall
2. On the PXE boot version I copied usbaud2.sys
In both cases, the problem was the same.

As a test, can you only test with my USB driver set ? Just install all of 10.247 to test with EHCI. If done, you can revert back to 12.14.
OK - today I will try and describe the result.
I tried to replace the USB drivers completely with your package version 10.247.
The result is the same.

Yes, my mistake. The version I used in test 2 and 3 is 10.244
I apologize.

Good time of day.

Lars, thank you for your feedback.
I've done the tests you mentioned. So far I have only an audio device based on Amanero. Another one based on Xmos will arrive at the weekend.

So far, the results are as follows:
The problem with changing the frequency on the device receiving the audio stream manifests itself on both EHCI controllers and XHCI.
In the beginning I used USB drivers version 12.14 and USB Audio driver 10.247
I have a motherboard Supermicro x10SBA with an EHCI controller on which I can turn off XHCI, and there is also a motherboard on which there is only XHCI and there is a separate PCI-e board with XHCI. After I made sure that the problem repeats on any of the controllers on the same set of software, I switched to an already tested board with an EHCI controller.

1. Remove the XHCI driver from Config, downgrade the USB driver version to 12.13, then to 12.12 - The problem persists.
2. USB driver version 12.12 and USB Audio driver 10.244 - No problem, everything is clear.
3. USB driver version 12.14 and USB Audio driver 10.244 - No problem, everything is clear.
4. USB drivers version 12.12 and USB Audio drivers SVN2364, SVN2368, 10.247 - The problem persists.

An interesting observation. Reset the audio device to 16bit/44/1kHz mode
I consistently play Wav audio files in various formats one by one, let's say so:
16/44.1 -> 24/48 -> 24/96 -> 24/192,
then on the indicator of the audio device we will see such a sequence of switching formats:
16/44.1 (Ok) -> 16/44.1 (Ops, it was necessary to switch to 24/48) -> 24/48 (Switched but not there, we need 24/96) -> 24/96 (again the parameters of the previous stream))
I have the impression that the switching is not on the frequency of the stream that should start, and on the frequency of the previous one.

Question to the community of USB Audio device users.
I am interested in the opinion of those who use USB 3.0 XHCI port to connect an audio device, do you play audio files of different resolutions correctly?
Especially when switching between tracks of different resolutions, for example, when switching from 16bit/44.1kHz to 24bit/48kHz, is there any sound slowing down, and can your audio device display a stream format that does it get?

In my case, from the first time after switching from one resolution file to another, the signal parameters on the audio device do not change and the sound is distorted, only after restarting playback, the sound is played correctly and the device overrides the stream format.

I am using USB drivers 12.14 and have tried different versions of USB audio drivers from Lars with the same result. The software playing the file does not matter, the symptoms are the same on the built-in player and on PM123.

Maybe there are some suggestions, what could be the problem?

Good news!
Fans of good sound have to wait for the official USB driver package from AN.

Thank you very much, the problem would hardly have been solved without you.

David, can you create a ticket against USBAUD2 at Netlabs and attach all info there ? It´s becoming too cluttered here.

I would like to ask you to post the interim results of diagnostics in this thread.
As far as I understand there is positive news?
