Networking / Re: SAMBA Printing
« on: October 14, 2013, 10:08:37 pm »
I have tried the smb.pdr that I have (ver 1.0.1) and it gives an error message:

 ERROR 1 during spooling to smb://os2:****@work01/192.168.0.30/lp

If the **** is supposed to be the password then it is much too short to work.

As Dug says the SAMBA Wiki is a mess and says nothing about setting up things like printing - or even if network printing is even possible.

Thanks guys, but does not allow me to print to a print server that requires a user name and password.

When I tried from the XP VM it asked for the user name/password after selecting the printer and it appears to remember that and allow printing.  I don't see any way to tell samba for OS/2 how to do that.

Networking / SAMBA Printing
« on: October 14, 2013, 12:48:57 am »
Following on from Ben's saga with network drivers in which SAMBA was mentioned several times, I have a question.

Is it possible to use SAMBA as the transport mechanism to print from OS/2 to a printer on a password protected network print server?

I can do this from win XP running in a VM on OS/2 but not directly from OS/2 itself.  Maybe I'm not making the necessary sacrifices.

If it is possible, and someone is actually doing it, could you/they please let me in on the secret.

Hardware / Re: USB & Me
« on: October 12, 2013, 11:17:58 pm »
A couple of things.  What does HCIMONIT say about the number of USB controllers that MB has?  According to the information I have that board has 8 USB ports which may imply that you are a couple of usbuhcd entries short.
For example: on my ASUS M4A78LT-M LE, hcimonit reports
You have 5 PCI USB OHCI host controller(s)
You have 2 PCI USB EHCI host controller(s)

Which results in the following USB section of config.sys:
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBPRT.SYS
BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
DEVICE=C:\os2\SYSTEM\AMouse\AMOUSE.SYS SMP
DEVICE=C:\os2\SYSTEM\AMouse\USBMOUSE.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:5 /FLOPPIES:1
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\tools\usb\USBRESMG.SYS

These use from Lars Erdmann's usbhcd196.zip.
As far as I know the usbd.sys doesn't need the req: entries - at least I haven't been using it for ages on any of the servers or workstations here.

Another thing how have you setup the USB Configuration in the bios?  Settings here can cause a USB mouse to not be seen.

Hope this might be of some help.

Applications / Re: vlc 2.1.0 won't start
« on: October 12, 2013, 05:54:51 pm »
Sorry Joop but it works here for me on 6 computers with varying processors and video cards.

The only thing is I strip out all the intermediate directory tree since I don't have a usr dir, so no usr\local and I start it with a cmd file, just as I have all the other versions.

The bin, include, lib and share directories are under vlc-210 - on drive I on my test machine.  I then use the following cmd file:

i:
set beginlibpath=i:\vlc-210\lib;
cd vlc-210\bin
vlc
exit

As an aside, this is version plays the mp4 hd files I have without the cutoff on the side that the older versions had.

Paul, I have a problem using lsusb.exe.  It works when I use lsusb -h (it shoes the options) but when I try to do anything else I get the following:

[D:\utility]>lsusb -d 04b8:010c -v

Killed by SIGSEGV
pid=0x0076 ppid=0x006e tid=0x0001 slot=0x00b2 pri=0x0200 mc=0x0001
D:\UTILITY\LSUSB.EXE
LSUSB 0:0000f3b6
cs:eip=005b:0001f3b6      ss:esp=0053:0081ff30      ebp=0081ffa0
 ds=0053      es=0053      fs=150b      gs=0000     efl=00012246
eax=00000000 ebx=ffffffff ecx=ffffffff edx=00000000 edi=00000000 esi=0081ffbc
Process dumping was disabled, use DUMPPROC / PROCDUMP to enable it.

The usb.ids is in os2\bin as per your readme.os2 since this is a standard WSeB install.  I assume not finding the usb.ids is the problem so what di I need to do to make it do so?

I was under the impression that ecenter was an eCS skinned version of xcenter so you should be able to unpack the xcenter distribution and use the widgets it contains.

Thanks Dave.  I thought it had to be something like that but I don't know enough about *nix to be sure - hence my asking for help decoding the script.

A couple of things to note Martin.

First run <path to openjdk-sdk\bin> java -jar greenfoot-generic-230.jar  that is the installer.

Second, the installer wants to put tools.jar in the sdk \lib directory.  If it can't do this it will stop working and greenfoot is not installed.

Other than having the openjdk6-sdk-ga5 dir in the root of a drive (in my case f:\ as it where I have space to try things out on this box) and Andy saving me the trouble of working out the script I did nothing that isn't normal when running a java app.

One other thing.  I have now made a program object as follows;

Path and file name
F:\OPENJDK6-SDK-GA5\BIN\JAVA.EXE

Parameters
-Duser.home=f:\java-apps\greenfoot -cp f:\java-apps\greenfoot\lib\bluej.jar;f:\openjdk6-sdk-ga5\lib\tools.jar bluej.Boot -greenfoot=true -bluej.compiler.showunchecked=false "$@"

Working directory
left blank

**The parameters are all on one line**

I also made an icon for it.

Thanks Andy, that gets it up and running.

The only thing missing is starting firefox, which it appears to want to do.  It supposedly uses the JDK browser starting functions to, first see if there is a running instance of firefox and then, if not, start it.

The score of 0 is because I was watching what happened rather than doing anything with it.

OK, I downloaded greenfoot (because it was a small download).

The generic jar file is an installer which works without any apparent problems.  It creates a shell script (it appears to assume that our system is linux because we are using openjdk6) which I now have to interpret for OS/2 to use.

The script is below if anyone would like to venture an interpretation it would be helpful.

#!/bin/sh
APPBASE="f:\java-apps\greenfoot"
JAVAPATH="F:\openjdk6-sdk-ga5"
CP="$APPBASE/lib/bluej.jar:$JAVAPATH/lib/tools.jar"
"$JAVAPATH/bin/java" -cp "$CP" bluej.Boot -greenfoot=true -bluej.compiler.showunchecked=false "$@"

Martin, you did note that both of those programs require the JDK or SDK in OS/2-eCS speak not the runtime.

I might see about downloading one of them over the weekend and see if I can do anything with it.

Setup & Installation / Re: Internet USB Key Huawei E353 and SafeFire PPP
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:14:59 pm »
Sorry Barbara but I can't find the notes I made in 2009 when this first came up so at the moment I'm working off the top of my head.

Our version of usb-modeswitch was ported from the Linux version here http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/  On that site there is a little more information that might be of use to you.

Now another question.  What do you get when you type ppp in an OS/2 window after your usb modem is mounted?

The ppp usage is as follows if you need to know.

┌─────────────┐
│     PPP     │ OS/2 TCP/IP Point-to-Point Protocol Driver
│    2.00     │ Copyright(c) IBM Corp. 1994, 1995
└─────────────┘ Revision: 1.18a   10 Jan 1997 00:00:00

Usage: ppp [options], where options are:
        <device>        Communicate over the named device
        <speed>         Set the baud rate to <speed>
        <ip>:<ipdest>   Set the local and/or remote interface IP
                        addresses.  Either one may be omitted.
        asyncmap <n>    Set the desired async map to hex <n>
        auth            Require authentication from peer
        connect "cmd"   Invoke command cmd to set up the serial line
                            Ex. connect "slattach atdt9,999-9999 CONNECT"
        defaultroute    Add default route through interface
        file <f>        Take options from file <f>
        idle <n>        Set the idle timeout period to <n> minutes.
        modem           Set/Reset modem control lines
        mru <n>         Set MRU value to <n> for negotiation
        netmask <n>     Set interface netmask to <n>
        notify          Display notification message when DCD signal drops
        priority <n>    Set process scheduling priority to <n>
        rtscts          Use hardware RTS/CTS flow control
        silent          Don't send connect request to peer, wait for request

If you get some indication that ppp sees the modem on the com port it shouldn't take too much to get you connected.

Very strange in deed.  Maybe there is some interaction between Odin and the latest java but that is just clutching at straws.

The two attachments show the PDFSam about page and the program object settings notebook page.
