Setup & Installation / TCP/IP 4.3 patches
« on: November 11, 2024, 09:48:18 pm »
I'm installing Warp4 from 1996 on a VirtualBox environment. I'm trying to install all the fixes.

I've installed TCP/IP 4.3, but VBoxService wants TCPIP32.DLL, and I'm not seeing it where I expect to see it, in C:\MPTN\DLL

What installs TCPIP32.DLL, and what fixes or patches are available?

Hardware / Is this WiFi supported?
« on: October 01, 2024, 05:44:19 pm »
I have a USB Wifi dongle.

ID 0bda:c820 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.  (lsusb output attached)

How can I tell if it has a driver under ArcaOS?

Host system: Red Hat 9.4 (same behavior also under Windows 11)
I installed the extension pack, and my ArcaOS 5.1 guest system. I shared my home directory.

I can copy files from the shared folder. I can edit files with Lotus SmartSuite (I can save the changes.)

I cannot copy (control drag in WPS) files to the shared folder. When I try the system gives error Sys0266: The specified file was not copied. A file with the new name exists in the shared folder, but it has 0 bytes. (see attachment for error message)

I can move (drag in WPS) a file to the shared folder. If that file already exists in the shared folder, then I get Sys0266 error, otherwise the move succeeds.

Networking / NetDrive error message
« on: July 30, 2024, 10:04:38 pm »
When I boot ArcaOS 5.1 my Lenovo ThinkCentre M920, I get the following error from NetDrive:

OSSS32_Initialize: FAILEDpci_register_driver: query_device found fb 8086:a348 class=40380 checking bt87xUnable to attach 32-bit driver.

And yet I can still mount a drive using ArcaMapper.

What does it mean?

Multimedia / Improvement in Webcam support
« on: July 25, 2024, 03:26:12 pm »
Starting with Arca Noae USB drivers version 12.16, Webcam support is working with USB 3.0 on all the machines/webcams I have available to test. Prior to this version, USB webcams only worked with the USB 2.0 drivers.

The function is nice and fast, and I see no lag with the picture. Laptops with webcams that are attached with USB 3.0 tend to be much higher resolution, probably because they are newer.

I am using WebCam, UVC Webcam Support for OS/2 (ArcaOS, eComStation) by Wim Brul.

Utilities / K File Wizard
« on: May 15, 2024, 04:34:17 am »
K File Wizard is a file manager for OS/2 integrating file operations of both the local and the remote support FTP and SFTP. K File Wizard was written by KO Myung-Hun.

I downloaded it from HobbesArchive, but when I try to run it, I get the following error:

SYS0002: The system cannot find the file specified. "KCRYPTO"

Does anyone know where kcrypto.dll can be found?

Networking / VNC to Ubuntu LTS
« on: May 02, 2024, 08:39:43 pm »
I'm trying to use our VNC to connect to Ubuntu LTS.

It looks like it's trying to work, but I can never get a password accepted.

Has anyone gotten this to work?

Programming / IBM APL2 for OS/2
« on: January 26, 2024, 01:48:27 am »
I recently obtained a copy of IBM APL2 for OS/2

The previous owner gave me a load of books, magazines and notes on APL. (see photos)

If any APL enthusiast wants these, let me know. I'm in the Santa Cruz, California.

Applications / Running Converseen
« on: October 22, 2023, 03:18:26 am »
I saw Tellie has made a port called Converseen, which looked like it could convert those HEIC files that the iPhone creates when you take a picture. I love PMView, but it doesn't support that format.

Unfortunately, I can't get it to run.

The readme.os2 instructs me to use yum

yum install libraw

Yum fails, but helpfully suggests installing LibRaw.

yum install libzip

Yum fails here, but does not make any suggestion.

At this point converseen does not have the needed libraries, and fails with SYS0002: The system cannot find the file specified. "RAW_R23"

Interestingly, PMDLL cannot make anything of converseen.exe. It puts up "Building tree", but never any other information.

I'm using netlabs-rel repository.

Networking / Samba Users and Groups
« on: October 17, 2023, 04:51:49 am »
I'm running Samba server for OS/2 on ArcaOS 5.1. I am trying to understand how Users and Groups work, and also how the kLibc User Manager works along with Samba.

When ArcaOS 5.1 installs Samba, it makes a user named User, and password is Password. It also makes a password for the user I named during the install, Warp30. I don't know the password for this user, either.

The first time running Simple Samba Configuration Center (SSCC), the icon has the parameter /install. After that, the parameter is changed to /config. I'm not sure what actions /install takes. It takes a root password at that time.

It would be nice to be able to snapshot the users and groups, so that I could preserve a working set. It's too easy to make Samba stop functioning.

Ironically, I made a presentation on Samba at Warpstock 2015. I'm not sure how to get good information on the topic. I've somehow preserved my one working set of users since then, but I don't really understand in depth how to maintain users and groups.

Applications / Drag and drop printing
« on: September 14, 2023, 12:42:35 am »
So, if I have a group of Lotus WordPro files selected, and I drag them to a printer, they print. But they don't seem to print in the order they were in the folder.

If a group of files are dropped on a printer, what determines the order in which the files will print?

Applications / Registry editor

I'm using \OS2\SYSTEM\REGEDIT2.EXE. If I open the HINI_USER_PROFILE, then all is well. But if I open the OS2.INI file on another drive, then the REGEDIT2 closes with a new entry created in POPUPLOG.OS2.

I can recreate this by accessing the same INI file using REXX function SysIni, although the exception location is different.

Programming / Where does OS/2 store the screen resolution?
« on: June 23, 2023, 06:26:36 pm »
I'm interested in knowing the screen resolution that OS/2 will use. The program needs to read the information from disk for a volume that is not currently booted, for example, if the computer is booted from CD, but wants to show the resolution that a disk volume will use if it is booted.

Applications / Rsync and eaclean
« on: March 31, 2023, 01:53:25 am »
I keep my data on a single JFS drive, including my PMMail test mailstore, which has over 1 million messages. I back up this drive (2 TB) to several other drives on other computers using Rsync in client/server mode.

Due to a drive failure on my main computer, I had to use Rsync to transfer the entire drive, which took 30 hours. This seemed long to me, so I experimented with things and found that the PMMail mailstore was taking most of the time. Not only that, but the server was so loaded down that I could not use it.

Further experimentation showed me that it was the Extended Attribute (EA) processing that was taking so long. I used eaclean, by David Azarewicz to remove the EA from my mailstore message files and the time to transfer the mailstore using rsync changed from 9 hours to 45 minutes. The server was no longer impacted and the user interface ran normally.

You can obtain eaclean from David's Software Download Center

https://88watts.net/software.html

eaclean was able to remove unnecessary EA over one million files in a few minutes.
