Applications / Re: VisPro C++
« on: February 25, 2013, 01:55:02 am »
Hi All

I don't have - or plan to have - VisProC++ so pardon the possibly silly questions  :-)

Is there a setup/install application?

If "Yes" does it ask to modify config.sys?

If "Yes" - Did you let it?

If "Yes" have you rebooted?

I'm guessing that the software install should add some items to Path, LibPath and maybe Help. As it looks like library files are not found are they missing or does LibPath not show the path to those libraries?

Hi Doug

OO3 does not work with IFE260 at all here - never gets onscreen. Checking the readme.1st file I found this:-

- Innotek Font Engine is required to run OpenOffice.org 3.2 for
eComStation and OS/2. (Available by default in eComStation)
You can download it from the following location:
  http://download.innotek.de/ft2lib/InnoTek_FT2LIB_240_Release1.exe

That seems to indicate OO3 is built to use IFE 2.40

As you say IFE2.60 is better but can cause more hangs/crashes in my experience - which may be different to yours.

I use iFE 2.40 and have added pmshell.exe to the Applications - as well as deleting all mention of Mozilla apps - and find that the Desktops on 3 systems here all look much better with regard to font display. The only real moan I have is that long folder/application names do not fit on the dropdown menus eg click eCS button (on eComCentre) and here "File and Print Client Resource Browser" has the 's' overwritten by the right arrow head and half the 'e' is missing - as is the final 'r'.

I have also added ar5os2.exe to the IFE 2.40 applications and use ar5os2.exe as the "windows runtime" for OO1.1.5 for Windows. Font display in both OO1.1.5 applications and Acrobat Reader V5.1 is much improved and so far - touch wood (touches head ;-)  - no hangs/crashes.

Using IFE 2.60 with the above applications my system did suffer the odd hang/crash from time to time. I guess that is because 2.60 is a beta version... Would have been nice if it had got past beta before development stopped  :-(

Hi

Too bad to hear Pete. I have followed your long term problems with OO on news.ecomstation.com, but have never experienced them myself. On the contrary OO has proven to be quite reliable here at my end.

Thanks for your sympathies Melf.

What makes my (and others) problems with OO3 so frustrating is simply that so many other people have no problems with OO3 reliability/crashing. Even more annoying is that at the moment the Mrs is sitting at her pc - next to me - and running OO3 with no problems. She is actually designing some business cards which is 1 of those things that causes OO3 to simply disappear (as in exit) without any warning, error message or error log when I try it on my system!

Rodericks post leaves me wondering if loading DLLs into high memory will overcome those problems. I can only hope it does and offer my services as a tester - if a build of OO3 works properly on my system it will probably work on anything  ;-)

However, I seem to recall that I supplied details of memory use (obtained using Thesus) which showed plenty of free shared memory space so I'm not over hopeful this will cure the problems. OTOH: I'm not that familiar with Thesus so may have misunderstood the ouput.

I do agree that Wordpro was a good package and have no doubt that it can still work well - Ben seems to have the answer to making current format docs available for use in Wordpro. It would certainly be a lot more convenient if Wordpro had the necessary filters though.

As regards font antialias: I suspect the Innotek Font Engine may have a use there. You would need to add Wordpro to the applications supported by the Font Engine in the Registry - see the Font Engine readme file for details.

Hi All

I'm sure I've seen a post somewhere stating that OO3.4.0 will be included in eCS2.2

I have also had an email response from Mensys stating that the problems I've seen with previous OO3 releases have not been resolved so that ends my interest in that "office" package -  OO3 to date has been totally unreliable and crashes whenever I try to do anything useful with it.

If/When OO3 becomes useable I may reconsider my decision to not bother renewing my eCS Subscription.

For most of my simple needs OO115 running using ar5os2.exe still works well enough - and if I do need to open a later format document I have to boot WindowsXP in VirtualPC  where OO3.4.1 runs fine.

So frustrating having to boot a virtual machine simply to use a current "office" package...

Hi Tom

I'm glad my youngsters did not spot this a few years ago when they got into train sets - I don't think their mum would have appreciated aircraft taking off in the lounge  ;-)

Hi Ben

Sorry I misunderstood the problem - mainly because I could get the main page without any problem but trying any of the links eg /pub/os2 returned the error message you posted.

Applications / Re: Qpdf
« on: January 27, 2013, 10:22:41 pm »
Hi All

Having updated cups to the very latest I can now print from qpdf - once. Any attempt to print another document fails - nothing happens.

In order to try and see what the problem is I attempted to start my browser. No go, Seamonkey will not start with any established Profiles or with the Profile Manager.

I closed qpdf and retried Seamonkey - which started without problems.

So, qpdf can print once and does not allow Seamonkey to start while qpdf is running. No problem starting qpdf with Seamonkey already running though.

I had a look at my cups log to see what had gone wrong with my 3 printing attempts (after the successul print). The answers are:-

/cups/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"
/cups/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"
"/cups/lib/cups/filter/pdftops.exe failed"

Obviously qpdf needs a bit more work but looks promising.

Hi All

Having extracted the libjpeg.dll and zlib.dll from the zip files and put them on the libpath then unzipped qpdf and created a qPDF program object and gave it a try.

Seems to work well - no problem opening pdf files on different partitions here.

Printing does not work. Having checked the CUPS Jobs I see that is because the job state is:-

stopped
"Unable to execute pdftops program: No such file or directory"

I opened a command window and had a check for the file

[J:\]dir pdftops* /s

The volume label in drive J is eCSApps.
The Volume Serial Number is 969D:85C1.

Directory of J:\cups\lib\cups\filter

11-06-12  6:10a        11,316    124 a--r  pdftops.exe
        1 file(s)      11,316 bytes used

I tried to print a different document and this failed with:-

stopped
"/cups/lib/cups/filter/pdftops.exe failed"

In both instances the cups log shows "Unable to execute pdftops program: No such file or directory"

The file exists so the question is: Is this a CUPS or qpdf error?

As both Paul and Silvan seem to be reading this thread I'm hoping for a definitive answer and maybe a fix?

Hardware / Re: Kudos to the eComStation developers....

Hi

I've been using the Innotek Font Engine to enhance the WPS for years and it does not seem to cause any problems here - except if a menu entry is too long it may lose a character or 2 from the end ie when I click the "eCS button" on the eComCentre the menu entry for File and Print Client Resource Browser is too long for the width of the menu so the "er" is missing from "Browser".

I can live with that as there are only a very few menu entries that show this problem :-)

I've attached a screenshot of a bit of my Innotek Font Engine enhanced Desktop. I have my system set to use Warpsans Bold for Icon View (Desktop and DVD/CD Toys) and Warpsans standard for Tree View (Drive L).

I think Seamonkey uses WorkplaceSans by default if it is installed but I'm not sure which version I am using... here is the dir entry:-
11-10-11 12:22p        42,224      0 a---  WPSU.TTF

Note the date is in DD-MM-YY format.

Hi Conrad

You can make screen fonts look better by adding applications to the Registry Key. To make the WPS look better use the following instructions to add pmshell.exe to the Registry Key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\InnoTek\InnoTek Font Engine\Applications using the Registry Editor:-

RMB (Right Mouse Button) on Applications and select New, Key and name it pmshell.exe
RMB on pmshell.exe and select New, DWORD and call it Enabled - this autonatically has a Value of 0 which needs to be changed to 1
Close Registry Editor and then restart the WPS - or reboot

Text should now be a bit better  :-)

You can do the same for other applications - and, while I think of it, you should either Delete keys for seamonkey.exe, thunderbird.exe and firefox.exe or set the Enabled value to 0. Recent/current builds of these applications do not use the font engine to enhance text as that capability is now built into these applications and leaving the font engine keys enabled can cause problems.
