Hardware / Re: Time for a OS/2 box

I think it's good not to overestimate the size of the market for these machines. Can you have a machine built in china if your total run is going to be 8 computers?

Lots of rsync users here, but probably none are using SSH. Can you skip using SSH for now?

Programming / Re: 10% Fundraising for QT5 and new Browser
« on: March 13, 2018, 02:31:45 pm »
There was no need for Qt5 in the last 5 1/2 years of it's existence. It's a huge amount for a temporary solution. QtWebKit will be removed from Qt6 next year. The preferred path for the Qt framework since 2015 is QtWebEngine which is based on Google's Chromium. So one question remains: Which new browser will use the outdated QtWebKit from 2013 in 2019?

Why are you bringing up QtWebKit?  BitWise is not on this forum; and elsewhere they've said they have not yet selected the browser framework. We need Qt first, and the selection of the browser framework should be done as late as possible.

Networking / Re: ArcaOS network compatibility with OS/2

IBMPEERS is absent in ArcaOS. Samba client is installed instead.

IBMPEERS is not missing, you simply did not select the option, when it was presented, or you chose the easy install, which doesn't always make the best choices, but usually works properly.

Quote
WHY IBMPEERS is disabled by default?

I don't speak for Arca Noare, but it is simply that SAMBA is far better. Try to copy a 2.5 GB file, or attach to a win 10 network, with IBMPEERS. It isn't going to work. You can still attach to an IBMPEERS network, using the SAMBA client, but you may need to tweak the security stuff (basically turn it off) to be able to do it. It is documented.

Quote
Who made the decision?

Those who understand what modern networking is all about.

The original poster asked how to network with eCS 2.2 running IBMPEERS. SAMBA cannot do this. If you try, you'll see a few files, but if the number of files you examine exceeds a couple of hundred, you'll find that SAMBA has failed. Bitwise says SAMBA does not support IBM File and Print Sharing.

OS/2 is not about modern networking. It's about keeping support for a legacy system. If it can also do modern networking, that's a bonus.

I don't think ArcaOS is any different than eCS in supporting the original OS/2 File and Print Client, or IBM Peer Networking.

I welcome SAMBA and will enjoy having the server upgraded to version 4 if that gets done. I think the version 4 client must be good for someone, but most who use multiple Operating Systems on a LAN are going to choose to sit on some other desktop, so the SAMBA Server component is the one that wants upgrading.

As it is, with Samba Server version 3 and Samba Client version 4, there is a little awkwardness in setting up security for a LAN with all ArcaOS computers. IBMPEERS is easier to use and better documented than SAMBA for this case. That said, I use SAMBA for my mixed ArcaOS and eCS LAN.

The transcript of BWW speakup is now up on the VoiCE website. I can see that the topic never came up.

I'm not looking for a "resolution" to problems with Firefox -- I have all the latest libraries on both eCS and ArcaOS. I know there is a lot of work going on by looking at checkins on github, but I don't know the goal of those checkins.

I will say that marking code to load high does make some difference to stability, and I'll comment again on this in a few weeks when I have more information. I think the highmem tool could be a little more user-friendly.

I don't think I can enter a bug report for "what are you guys trying to do with Firefox?"

Silvan said in the speakup that a browser is essential to the life of the operating system. How essential is a web browser to the success of the operating system? I can browse on a smartphone or tablet. There is no platform with a bug-free browser. Still, I'm inclined to think he's right. I'm using Firefox on ArcaOS to type this message.

Thanks, Dave. That is my problem. Lars shows other problems like that.

Years ago, I tried to get Scott Garfinkle to commit his queue interface fixes. If the system queue table exceeds 64K, the kernel simply overwrites whatever is there. Allocate more than 3000 queues, and you can write anything on the kernel you want.

I have talked to potential OS/2 users, and our killer app is actually OS/2. Lots of curious people wanting to see something different.

This won't give us world domination over Android or iOS or the other minor operating systems, but it has the potential for a lot of sales compared to today.

Well, I missed my chance to ask, but the question I would have asked is this:

What is going on with Firefox? As it stands, I can leave the browser pointed to a modern, active webpage, and after some time, the system will reset. I've been doing this long enough to recognize kernel corruption. Firefox runs the system out of some resource, and the kernel is not protected from such a shortage.

Having solved some of these problems in legacy industrial systems, I know they are challenging to solve. Is there any hope that a future version of Firefox will be more forgiving of system shortages?

Is the problem actually in Firefox?

Hardware / Re: Limitation on using an USB DVD and CD writer under ArcaOS
« on: February 18, 2018, 05:03:35 am »
Even with Rich Walsh's cdrecord, burning ISO to USB DVD causes an error. I appreciate that I could probably fool around with this until it worked, but I'm too lazy. It looks like it's going to work, the drive is recognized, but it doesn't take long to fail.

Also, the command line processing for mkisofs2.exe differ from mkisofs.exe, so my scripts don't work.

Tried RSJ Writer. but it did not work.  It was then I realized that this program probably only works with CDR drives and not DVD writers.

RSJ runs fine with USB DVD writers. It does not run well if DVD-Toys is installed. I don't know why. There are some interesting theories put forward in this thread. The reason newer hardware, that is hardware without a built-in DVD, needs RSJ is that USB support is broken in DVD toys. This support could be included in ArcaOS, but it is not.

The need for DVD support just got a lot less compelling now that ArcaOS can boot from USB stick.

At least for ArcaOS it's a known issue because I kept reminding the team.

I find RSJ reliably writes to USB DVD, so my findings seem different than yours. If you have DVD Toys, you'd need to uninstall at least part of it to allow RSJ to see the drive to burn to it. But RSJ is very old. I find it does not erase media reliably.

So for old machines, DVD Toys is OK, but for new ones, RSJ is the only way. Also, DVD Toys has no DOCUMENTED command line mode, while RSJ has one, so for automation, RSJ is better.

Some of what I wrote is absurd, but accurate. How can a Linux-based command line DVD program not offer command line? Because it's not documented. Someone who knew their way around this could release the right command files and do some minimal documentation. I doubt it would take more than a few hours.

Lars USBMSD.ADD does not make any difference. If I get a chance, I'd set up a trace. I have not tried the custom version from Froloff. Why wouldn't that be packaged by Arca Noae? Because the source code for it is apparently lost.

Storage / Re: Low level format error with JFS
« on: February 10, 2018, 03:34:22 pm »
I'm using 1 TB and 2 TB drives with geometry the same as Mr. Sedletski. However, for me AirBoot is working fine, and Format and Chkdsk are working as well as can be for JFS. I didn't speak up, because I didn't use Format /L. I am a bit curious how long it would take to format a 2 TB JFS volume with /L.

I'm seeing the performance of Chkdsk is really good with AHCI and 2TB drive. Firefox seems to easily get the computer to shut down with drives dirty. One time I got 38000 lost files (machine hung right after I deleted them) and OS/2 is sometimes hard pressed to process 38000 files in a directory.

Article Discussions / Re: AN changing USB driver stack to 32-bit
« on: January 29, 2018, 04:31:42 am »
Guessing the change was made to make future development easier. For AN. Not for the rest of the world. Except David make his changes and his DDK publicly available some day.

If what you say is true I sincerely hope that at least the interface will be published. Because if not, nobody will be able to write a custom USB driver for a specific USB device, for example. Again, think about Wim's USBECD.SYS driver.

Did you test the new 32-bit driver with USBECD.SYS? Maybe it still works?

I'd rather see Arca Noae publish every interface that you guys need to continue their work. I can't imagine that they want the OS/2 community to shrink.

Going to a more modern 32-bit model for USB is not a bad thing in itself. Why make it bad by not disclosing necessary technical details?
