Internet / Re: Firefox Developer Edition 24.8.1b4
« on: May 24, 2015, 01:55:54 pm »
Thanks Dave for your answer.

Make sure that the problems are reproducible with the Bitwise build before opening a ticket. They should be as both are almost identical code and build environment.
I don't know what's going on, so putting in a reproducible problem will be difficult. Tried it before and it all ended in some kind of "yes-no war". So I stopped.

As for your (Joop) problems. The focus seems to only affect you, have you tried a new profile?
I did this before with FF17 with no result. I don't think it will give a result now. I make a new directory and put in the zip, copy a few files to it for starting up with run. Change the Firefox!.ENV for correct directories. I have the data produced by the program in an other directory. I copy the directory from FF17 to FF24. Most sub directories are empty, contains of cache is deleted. Most extra add on's  and alike have to be installed again, one is language, I do live in Holland and I use Dutch. The program does do a check on those if they are compatible with the version, I trust on that function. In the "root" of the data directory are only *.db or *sqlite files which are no more than databases. I don't see how this can effect a program problem on focus, you have to explain that to me. Of course I have all the necessary files or in OS/2 dll or in ECS dll directories. In the config.sys are already lines for pointing to these directories. So FF24 whatever just starts and run.

Had with this version the problem of tabpages, found no line in about:config to handle it, but there are some programs which can deal with this.  I used tab mix plus, set it to no tabpage if I have only one window open. But this has nothing to do with focus.

My first guess would be shared memory issues that may be fixed by marking the DLLs to load high. Another workaround would be to install awget (Hobbes) and simply copy the URLs that you want to download to the clipboard or use the included plugin. Awget will call wget or curl to do the actual download.
The problem with downloading more than 3 files is not new, I believe its from before version 10. As far as I know it had to do with proper deleting of some internal cache which overflows. Getting other programs in place to do the job is in my vision not the right way to fix things.

Viewing PDFs in the included JavaScript PDF viewer does use a lot of shared memory.
Can't see that, there is no tool in OS/2 for viewing this alive, lets say a program in the X workplace or Ecs bar. The Javascript PDF viewer is working, but slow on my system. But as soon as it opens you get also a bar with the option of viewing it in a separate program, which is Lucide for me. Beyond that, the Javascript PDF viewer does have issues with pdf's if you want to magnify for a bigger character so you can read it. Didn't find a solution when you get two pages at the same time on screen. Those are very small on my screen (1024x768) and can't be read this way.

Still very disappointed in the fact that this version also doesn't have focus and can't handle more then 3 pdf's or so.

Focus
If you are on a site and you want to an other site, then choosing so won't give you that site but something which is on the old site. So I'm on a site, I go to my list of sites, choose one, but I don't get that site but something what was accidental below my choice on the old site. Still not fixed.

3 downloads or pdf
If you download more then 3 things (it happened when I was reading pdf info and instruction stuff) then FF shows you the fast way of closing a program. Still not fixed.

Sorry, I had hoped for improvement. Seems to be very difficult to fix those basic things.
Its very annoying..

Article Discussions / Re: How to improve the installer of OS/2?
« on: May 23, 2015, 01:11:55 am »
I don't understand this. We don't need installers.
The OS/2 directory is only for stuff which belongs to OS/2. Rest of the programs, drivers, dll's in the eCS directory.-
All the important directories are already in the config.sys.
What's left is create a directory for the program, drop the files there. Put it on your desktop or in a menu, ready.

Applications / Re: Night Vision v4 and Java
« on: May 17, 2015, 12:42:45 am »
I downloaded Night Vision v4 and installed it (big word for really nothing). First, Netherlands nowhere in the files. I made a text file with locations with the option for saving the locations to a text file. Put in my home place. Saved the file and restarted nvj. I did setup it again and saved it tot the ini file. You have to set the time with the option of computer time, save it to the ini file. Shut down and restart. It picks up the computer time, but on hold? The problem is that the program does have a user setup for update interval and time speed. Go to Time, go to Rates , set update display to 1 second,  set advance time to "1X" for normal operation. Press "OK" or "Apply", next save it in the user preferences. Now nvj is perfect in sync with your computer every time you start and use the program.

Setup & Installation / Re: What's your WPS setup ?

This is my desktop

Never understood why almost everyone has links/programs on the desktop, as soon as you start a program they are under the program and you can't see them, unless you have real estate to spare.

Applications / Re: jEdit 5.1.0 filebrowser
« on: January 25, 2015, 01:02:26 am »
A few smart guys had kicked out OS/2 code because it was obsolete. Told them that OS/2 is alive and kicking and is known as eComStation. They tried to restore the code, but they don't understand it. So since then jEdit is broken for us until someone who know something about OS/2 code and can code fix it. Too bad.

I see that MB's are coming and going in shorter times than before. I want just to buy an MB and it has to work. So the chipsets on those boards need drivers.

Second concern are the rebuilds/ports from Windows and Linux for running on OS/2-eCS. Not a bad thing, but both OS systems needs more and more memory. So 4Gb might be a problem in the near future.

Build on the thought of number two, why not build a system in which you can run everything. OS/2-eCS finds out what it is, starts the necessary libs and runs the program. Porting is nice, but if you port the OS you don't have to port the programs. On the other hand, we could get trouble with the unwanted gifts from a Windows surrounding like viri and alike.

Applications / Re: About eComStation Pricing
« on: October 11, 2014, 03:59:53 pm »
Price is not that important, that the computer works without problems is. With Windows a computer will work, drivers are available. Almost no help is required from internal or external helpdesk. Next the problem with compatibility with other programs, the working together problems. Price will only be a problem when licenses are not scalable, ie the license for one user will cost the same as for 100 because the license minimum is for 100 users or more. With other OS systems drivers may not be available for the systems which where bought by the company, ie lots of money is going in making the machines running. So for eCS its important that it will work and run straight out of the box on any system.

I used 'highmem -b *.dll' , 'highmem -c *.dll'. That worked great (not sure why the difference).
Hi David,
usage: HIGHMEM [-options] {DLL module file} ...
Without options, current DLL object information are dumped.
Options:
 --quiet   -q  quiets (no message)
--verbose -v  verbose output (-v -v even more verbose)
--code    -c  marks pure 32bit code objects as 'loading above 512MB'
--data    -d  marks pure 32bit data objects as so
--both    -b  marks both of pure 32bit code and data objects
--unmark  -u  unmarks 'loading above 512MB' pure 32bit code/data objects
--exclude -x file  list of files to be excluded (max 1024 entries
 --help    -?  show this help

Got it form highmem-20140406-os2.zip.

Joop, do you have the extra required DLLs somewhere in your LIBPATH?
Required what? There is no file with any information for OS/2-eCS with info what you need for a machine, memory or installed libs. So I don't know, but everything else is running fine on my machine, except a few Java programs.

I have more than one office program which runs in OS/2-eCS. I can start them all if I want to.

I have this command file;

@echo off
set LIBPATH=i:\office\OpenOffice4\program;%LIBPATH%
set path=i:\office\OpenOffice4
I:
cd i:\office\OpenOffice4\program
soffice.exe

I get an error which I can't translate into a missing file or so.

A popup appears with the message
return code: 2
failing module:ICUUC42

That's it, end excution and I'm back on the prompt, did start the commandfile in an eCS command session. I played with some set libpath and set path settings, same popup.

I think that a little readme or reados2 or something won't do harm.

Applications / Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 RC3
« on: August 22, 2014, 12:36:02 am »
Downloaded the file, its going slow, it took about 12 minutes to complete.  The file name Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.1_os2gcci_install-arc_en-US-rc3-strip.zip suggest some kind of installation program. Didn't found one. There was a readme, but I couldn't discover any words about OS/2 or eComStation nor what you need in order to run the program. Its like something is missing, but I might be wrong.
So, said that, how do I start this monster?

Hi.

I tried Jmol 14.2.4 and seems to be running ok. I'm using OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_25-b01-GA3) and I got "Jmol-14.2.4_2014.08.03-binary.zip"

I run jmol with"java -jar jmol.jar"
Tried it with ga3, no way, same message. Up to Jmol-14.2.2_2014.06.29-binary.zip it runs fine, only the last one gives errors. Seems something is broken. What version of Odin do you use? The combination Odin and ga3 give some errors in packages like ImageJ.

Tried to run Jmol, but it looks like it doesn't recognize are Java.
I did try with version 1.42 , version 1.60ga and version 1.60ga5.
I get every time about the same line;

Is this with me only or do other users have the same results? They advertise that it will run woth every Java 1.4 and up. May be we have to do a wake-up call there ;-)

For some time I had only a Dutch page about the presentation "Java & Java applications" which I held before the Dutch user group some time ago. Today I have translated this presentation to English (I hope so...) and this presentation is now available to all including a pdf file.

Have fun,
Joop
