Setup & Installation / Re: OS/2 Warp 3 - Installation
« on: April 22, 2017, 07:11:08 pm »
Hi Jim

If it is open for consideration I would recommend you first to install Warp 3 on a Virtual Machine (Virtualbox) on a host machine (Windows or Linux) for practice.
You require the floppies on Warp 3, there was no "boot from CD" edition on that version. So you need to grab the .DSK files from the CD, you require the first three diskettes and from that it will install from the CD.

On a VM I would suggest first to grab the three first diskettes images (the are inside the CD) and from the DSK format, transform it to .IMA (You can use WinImage on Windows). And conver the CD to ISO.  With those files run a VM and install the OS so you can get used on how was the install procedure.

On real hardware:
Once you want to move to real hardware, you require the floppy drive, diskettes and to update the install diskettes so it recognize the CD and the HDD drive size (according to the size), just like Fahrvenugen suggest.

Depending on the hardware you will require to find the right drivers and install it to have network, better video, sound, etc.

If you install it and get some traps, messages and error, post it back here to check if we can help.

Regards

Note: I always wanted to create the "Updating Warp 3" wiki page just like I have for Warp 4.52 but I never got the time to create it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

I read the file that Lar's suggested. It does something different from what I'm trying to do. For what I understand this file makes a DOSCALLS.DLL replacement by creating NEWCALLS.DLL and linking os2386.lib inside it. After that it modifies with PMMMERGE.DLL (with dllrname.exe) so all the calls to DOSCALLS goes to NEWCALLS.

But it gives me the idea of what to do with the unknown/undocumented ordinals on the PMGPI.DLL file.

So I had included all the missing ordinals on the DEF files so it links it XMGPI.DLL even the ones that I don't know if exists. But I still get problems booting OS/2 with that PMGPI.DLL replacement.

I'm attaching my PMGPI.DEF forwarder just in case someone can give me a hint of what I'm missing.

Hi Rich.

It is good that the component is going to be included on ArcaOS and had been bug-tested/optimized, but it would be desirable to have something integrated to XWorkplace SOM objects (I guess it is the folder class object) and that can be also included on that project.

I will ask Lewis if there can be a chance to include that project has part of XWorkplace instead of being a separate close source project, but I will have to wait until he releases ArcaOS, I guess he is very busy on this days.

Hi

I also think that we need an standard and modern format for Icons and Pointers (PNG or SVG) but there are people with so much fear to change that will complain to it by just suggesting it.

Hi Ivan

I can not discuss things with people that are just fine with what they got.

In my case with 16:4 monitors at a higher than 1024 x 768 resolution (and 23" or more) requires to increase the size of icons. Some people does not have great vision, and when you increase the resolution of the screen the icons and text get smaller and smaller. It is required "something" to increase the size of the icons on OS/2. When you get "that something" that increase the size you also notice that the OS/2 standard format (and OS/2 standard icons) has it's limitations compared to modern standards.

When you see this picture and think it looks fine, we may have a disagreement.

If you are fine with little icons and you have a nice vision , maybe it does not apply to you.

"PNG desktop" is an interesting feature (but I don't mean it is implemented right). It solves the problem that you need better resolution icons for higher resolution screens. The OS/2 icon format is old and it is very limited for people trying to create icons on the platform. If someone is happy on his 800x600 screen using OS/2, there is no reason for this, the rest of the 90% of OS/2 users wants/uses a higher resolution.

The bad thing about "PNG desktop" is that is close source, so it has a high risk on becoming "future abandonware". Maybe an alternative can be to try to improve WPS-Wizard icons functions to be more stable.

Hi

I'm just exited for the milestone (ArcaOS release) to be complete this Saturday.

From that point I think it will be interesting to:

- Do testing and start submitting bugs of what it does not work as suppose to.
- Start discussing which is the priority of required missing drivers.
- and.. my favorite and the one that everyone fears,... discussing the future of the platform and the close source components that nobody has access to the source code.

ok, so I think this may be the final week before ArcaOS get released.

I know that many people on the community like critic all, overanalyze everything and not being surprised by anything (like good technical people) but I think it is good to maintain the optimism and see ArcaOS like a great first step for the improvement of the platform.

There are good reason to be cautious, IBM drop the platform first, Mensys/XEU just disappeared with eComStation and now a new player shows up. But for the moment there should be no prejudice with the new distro.

I remain optimistic with the OS and I have a little anxiety for it to be released. It is an important milestone so the platform can advance with other projects.

Hi

For what I know, only apps that has been created with that API in mind can take advantage of it.It will be interesting to have more documentation of the library on the EDM/2 Wiki.

The only issue that I found with that library is that it is close source freeware. Even that there if there is a compromise to be freeware in the future it is not the same as being open source.

On the other hand I'm looking with good eyes the other open source libraries that has been ported to the OS/2 platform like libc, cairo, sdl, etc, etc.

I think that today if someone wants to develop software on OS/2 they have two choices:
1) Using all the native-IBM API to reference CPI, PM, SOM, WPS
2) To use APIs based on open source software that will also make your applications portable to other platform. Libc, Cairo, SDL, Qt are very interesting.

Here it is where we tried to document all the APIs that the platform has: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/The_OS/2_API_Project

(help to improve it is also welcome)

Hi

I noticed that Riot.im tool works fine with Firefox. (without voice or video). You can even connect to the IRC freenode.
You can check out the #netlabs channel on IRC here: https://riot.im/app/#/room/#freenode_#netlabs:matrix.org

This software is open source software (Apache). There is no port for OS/2, but it can be used with the browser.

General Discussion / The First UEFI Virus? - Ransomware?
« on: April 05, 2017, 01:54:54 pm »
- Gigabyte Firmware Bugs Allow the Installation of BIOS/UEFI Ransomware

The only good things was that this vulnerabilities was found by researchers and not lost in the wild. Even that machines with UEFI BIOS may be the future present, I really don't find the benefit of UEFI compared to the old one. I have some machines with UEFI and you only get into the BIOS when you get into trouble. As a difference with the old one, it has some nice things that I just don't use. Does it make it easy for driver developers? or make it easier for the OS to interact with hardware?

Applications / Re: Firefox 38 - DLL Hell
« on: April 01, 2017, 11:51:46 pm »
Hi Jasmine, welcome to the forum.

I just use Arca Noae Package Manager (RPM/YUM) and get the libraries from there. Just install all the required DLL's from there.

Quote
libstdc++6 nspr nss libicu pixman cairo pango fontconfig freetype libkai

The most easy way that had worked for me to fight against the DLL Hell is to use a little function of XWorkplace.

Just go to "Local System - System Setup - OS/2 Kernel", go to "System Paths" and look for the LIBPATH DLLs that you have duplicated. Remove/rename any duplicated DLL, just let the ones inside x:\usr folder.

I hope it helps.
