Virtualization / Re: ArcaOS 5.1 on Apple Silicone
« Last post by Jean-Yves on July 15, 2025, 12:27:52 am »
Resurrecting this old thread just to ask whether anyone has managed to get ArcaOS or indeed eCS or even OS/2 Warp 4 installed and running on UTM on an M-series Mac?

I get as far as the ArcaOS logo in the installation program, then it just sits there indefinitely. So not very far at all. I've tried various hardware profiles, but no joy.

If anyone has managed it, would they mind posting their config values here?

Ok Doug, I love to play with ThinkPads, $50 is an ok impulse buy.

Spec's say it can take 16GB, with ArcaOS be unhappy if it finds more than 4GB, or would it just ignore?

ArcaOS will give you the option to use the 12.5 GB's (usual is about 3.5GB visible to the system) as a ram disk. System Setup-->Ram Disk. Otherwise, it'll ignore it.
I like using JFS on my ram disk. It is a bit tricky to set up, so ask if the default choices of FAT32 or HPFS aren't acceptable.
The ram disk isn't the fastest due to the overhead of entering and exiting PAE, but handy for a scratch disk and for tmp files

Setup & Installation / Re: Reading a usb thumb drive on arcaos 5.1.1

Dave,
I followed the docs and it works fine moving between Win11 and ArcaOS.

  A few notes:
    1) Booted with drive in.
    2) I first started miniLVM and it said the partition table was corrupt.
         Closed miniLVM.
    3) Used initdisk to erase and partition with mbr
    4) unplugged and replugged
    5) "notification area" (not sure what that's properly called in presentation manager, said drive unuseable.
    6) Shutdown, restarted.
    7) Green light on usb drive, was able to follow the rest of the directions in this document.

The document just says 'format the drive' - I would suggest, adding the example:
      format x: /fs:fat32

Setup & Installation / Re: pscom.sys proper way to pass args

I think it was Neil that asked if this T43 had a physical COM1.

I thought it did, but I went and double checked. The BIO's has enable / disable but I guess that's for some sort of external device.

The T43 in question has:
VGA Out
PS2
Modem
Ethernet
Audio in/out
2 USB
2 PC Card Slots.
and a Parallel port - but no Serial - it's there in the BIO presumably for a dock station.

I have two other (older model thinkpads) - that DO have physical COM ports. Also oddly the older thinkpads have blue colored VGA out ports, the T43's VGA out is black.

I will have to try my FTDI USB > RS232 adapter.

Hello Paul

I tried the 2025-07-14 version and works fine. Still not MIDI sound, but it is working good.

Let me know if you like this packaging for it, with the updated readme and icons.
