I think the original image made by DFSee was corrupt. Apparently if I wipe the drive first, my procedure works. I'll post again if it doesn't work in the field.

It's a lot simpler to make and restore whole drive images. I wonder how bad it is to restore a 40 GB image to an 80 GB drive?

And in another unrelated note, it seems easier than ever to support 20 year old computer hardware. Everything I need is available, as long as I'm not too picky. Refurbished seems to mean they wiped it off after picking it out of the dumpster.

Hardware / Re: PCIe - SATA3 card choices?

This is from my http://www.blondeguy.com/computer/humbopeep.html machine, a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720s.

Code: [Select]
Disk I/O disk 0-1: 122103 MB - SAMSUNG MZ7LN128HAHQ-000L1
Avg. data access time :       --.---    milliseconds
   Cache/Bus xfer rate   :      150.091    Megabytes/second
   Track 0 xfer rate fwd :      406.492    Megabytes/second
   Middle trk rate fwds. :       30.211    Megabytes/second
   Last track rate bwds. :      407.783    Megabytes/second
   Average Transfer rate :      281.495    Megabytes/second
Disk use CPU load     :        9.480    percent
   -----------------------------------------------------------------------
   Total                 :       --.---    Disk I/O-marks

By the way, we are all showing that failure of the Avg. data access time test. How hard would it be to fix SysBench so that test doesn't fail and a Disk I/O-marks score could be created?

I'd post another machine, but it looks like SysBench crashed. I looked on the Lenovo website, and SATA is going away fast. You can still order a machine with a SATA drive, but by default, none seem to have it.

I see you're point, but I'd really like a machine that runs OS/2 like it was made to do.  The video works, the sound works, the VDMs work.  And while I admire people working through the software to find workarounds for modern systems, they are just that...workarounds.  I have a VirtualBox with OS/2 set up to a reasonable level of functionality (thanks to the help of many here), but it is no fun to use.  The sound stinks, the VDMs are slow and buggy, a lot of the older OS/2 software doesn't work right (missing icons, etc) and the new stuff is usually some unix port that I have a heck of a time getting to work.  I don't think there will be any real improvement in the software until there is control of the source code.  Everything else is a hack.

So, I thought if we can't at this moment make the OS fit the hardware, why not make the hardware fit the OS?  Anyone tried running it on the 486FPGA?

I see you as trying to recreate some kind of "golden age OS/2". I think making hardware to support Warp 3 might do the trick. DOS would work well, and so on. There would be no modern browser or any of the other toys. But 1994 programs would work well.

Actually, thinking back to 1994, OS/2 programs wouldn't work as well. IBM non-gradd video drivers were pretty buggy.

Is it better DOS than DOS that you are looking for?

I'm guessing the remote user did something wrong with DFSee. I think he imaged the good drive, then restored to a smaller drive.

Then he did some other stoff.

DFSee reports "Pid03=   WARNING : Bootable JFS or HPFS driveletter mismatch BPB versus LVM!"

Web applications / Firefox creates PLUGIN-CONTAINER.EXE processes

I have a customer's screen print of TOP, and it shows six separate processes for PLUGIN-CONTAINER.EXE They all take a bunch of resources. What's the best way to stop this from happening?

The disks are fine. Getting the end user to use DFSee correctly is hard.

I now can get them to the point of "OS/2 is unable to operate the hard drive".

At this point, I may have to get some actual hardware.

I made a drive on my own computer. Of course it cannot boot my computer, but I sent it to them, and it doesn't work on their computer in the same way: does not even find the OS/2 loader. Using Sysintx.com made no difference.

At this point, I think both the partition and drive images are so particular that they must be made on the original computer. I am now trying to teach them to make a clone using DFSee. They hit the error for target drive smaller than source drive, but didn't understand the message from DFSee, "Write error on 127 sector(s) at sector 0x000000000001f7f82. Continue the restore?"

Good idea Ivan. I did test that. But my computer is much newer and it boots the restored image to a TRAP screen. That would be expected as the machine is much too new to run eCS 1.2R. In order to TRAP, it needs to run the OS/2 loader and I load enough of the kernel to display a TRAP screen.

That sounds like a possibility. SYSINTX.COM might be needed, but there is no platform to run it. I have an experiment in the works to tell me in another week or so if that was the problem.

You can use POP to get some messages from an IMAP server, too. Well, sometimes, anyway. Some parts of the protocol are the same. Or else some servers honor both.

PMMail is not intended to use IMAP. You are on your own for how to use an IMAP server with a POP e-mail client.

Thanks for the suggestions. Since the target machine is one of 600 identical machines, I know that it supports the full size of the drives. It doesn't need it, because I'm only trying to restore one 1 GB partition.

I also know that it supports booting from Primary, booting from IBM Boot Manager and booting from AirBoot.

That's a good suggestion about master and slave -- I'll send it along and see what happens.

I'm also thinking of having them try cloning a hard drive using DFSee. Originally, they tried to clone with Ghost. I'm sure most of you are laughing at them for thinking Ghost could clone a drive.

PMMail does not support IMAP.

I suppose the parts of IMAP that are identical to POP might work.

The drives are 40 GB and 80 GB. We have about 600 nearly identical OS/2 and eComStation machines. The problem machine is eComStation. The DFSee machine is running Windows 7 also on the same hardware. I do not have any access to any of the machines. No TCP/IP network, 3000 miles away.

I've taught them to text me cell phone photos, so I have a couple of screen shots.

Once the new drive is installed, the computer does not issue one character of output once control is transferred to the drive. Something goes wrong right at the time transfer goes to MBR or possibly when it looks for OS2LDR -- but that would issue a message, right?

Interesting puzzle.

I want to reiterate that the target computer is 3000 miles away.

The target computer has a Pentium 3, so I think GPT is not involved. DFSee shows the drive to be perfect, but nothing happens on boot.

I tried imaging just a partition. Still no joy.

I sent a partition image and DFSee. I am sending a drive, but I expect it to fail the same way. I'll find out in a week or so. I'll refresh this thread when I see a result.
