Networking / Re: Changing subnet on network
« on: May 26, 2023, 05:07:00 pm »
A final comment on this subject.

It appears that all the free france fibre units are on the 192.168.1.xx subnet and there is no way of changing that but I have managed to find a way round that.

TP Link produce a unit (TL R600VPN_UG) that can be configured to take a WAN address and put it on to a LAN address which defaults to the 192.168.0.xx subnet.  So almost all of my equipment is now reachable, printers, other computers, in fact all but the NAS boxes which appear to not like the work-round.

Since ArcaOS 5.0.7 works well for me on everything up to my Ryzen third generation box I can't see any reason to go to version 5.1 unless they change the underlying OS/2 to a 64 bit OS.

Hi Pete,

I agree that would be the logical thing to do but for some strange reason what I have appears to be hard-wired into the unit something to do with the extra unit the installers gave me.

The new freebox should be arriving today and hopefully I can set that up to run everything on my network (be nice to have access to the printers back).

Thanks Remy and Andy,  I will know more tomorrow when the the full fibre box arrives.  At the moment I have a box that the fibre plugs into piggy backing in the adsl box which might be causing the problem of not being able to do anything with the dhcp server (this box is stuck on 192.168.1.177 with no way ti change that).

I have a problem.
I have just moved to fibre from my internet supplier which is great but the the DHCP server in the freebox is set for 192.168.1.xxx and my old network is/was set for 192.168.0.xxx.  The change over on my Linux boxes was simple, just fill out a new profile and I was back on air - not so simple for OS/2 or ArcaOS. I spent a couple of hours tracking down every instance where the old subnet was mentioned and physically changing the refference.

Now the question, is there a simple way to do this change over on OS/2 and ArcaOS?  If so please let me in on the secret.

Hardware / Re: Resolution Assistance

I see Dave has given you part of the answer but I have another question, what video output ports does your unit have and also what input ports does the monitor have?

I ask for the simple reason that my units have VGA, DVI  and HDMI output and the monitors have DVI and HDMI inputs and video works at full resolution of the monitors (1920x1200) without problems.  One thing I will say , all my computers have AMD Ryzen processors with inbuilt video and never had problems with OS/2 Warp 4 or ArcaOS.

What version of OS/2 are you using?   I have a Hanns-G 28 inch monitor running at 1920x1200 with the panorama version with ArcaOS, prior to that I got the same resolution with snap drivers and OS/2 warp 4.

Internet / Re: RPM: Switching from i686 to Pentium4
« on: May 13, 2023, 01:54:48 am »
Could be a problem if you rely on rpm/yum.  I have it on my computer only because ArcaOS installed it but have never used it - I was burned with it when I used suse linux (I have since changer to linux mint) and decided 'never again'.

Looking at it I think it is possible to find out what each rpm needs but I am an advocate for 'if it works why change anything' change for the sake of change isn't good, after all the only good changes are ones that add something or enhance to what you are doing.

You need to look at what you are doing and ask the question 'will adding/changing something make my working better/easier' if the answer to that is yes then by all means make the changes, if no just ignore the proposed changes.

Hi Igor,

An Intel board, I know nothing about them because I haven't used one since AMD came out with their 486.

Hi andreas,

Why not just download the RPMs and then use ARCVIEW to open it and then manually install it where you want?

Hi Igor,

Your setup sounds very odd indeed but I have a question - What mother board is it?  I ask because most have a connection for a floppy drive unless you have something like a third generation Ryzen board.

Other than that is there a possibility of you getting an add in card for a full floppy drive because, in my experience, USB floppy drives are not very reliable.

Hi christech,

What does the manual say about that type of drive, is it the same type as the one you removed?  I ask because they can be either PCIe or SATA.

Thanks Dave, I will give that a try when I go up the two flights of stairs to get to the computer - oh the joy of living in a vertical house, everything is either upstairs or down stairs, at least it keeps me fit as if walking the dog (a rather large Newfoundland) didn't.

Hardware / getting ArcaOS to remember video resolution
« on: May 04, 2023, 05:08:22 am »
Is it possible to get ArcaOS to remember video resolution if it is started without the monitor connected?

I have three computers connected to a Samsung S24E659 monitor (1920x1200) via a HDMI KVM switch.  I had to replace my old KVM switch (don't ask but it involved the cat and the dog) that used to auto sense any of the computers being switched on.  The new switch does not do that but the linux computers remember the resolution and not the ArcaOS one, it reverts to 800x600 which means I need to reset it to 1920x1200, reboot and then rearrange the screen icons back to where I have them normally which is a pain, hence my asking this question.
I wouldn't mind if it switched to 1920x1080, that I could live with.

Hi Marc,
Why are you trying to follow the windows way with everything on the boot partition?  Doing it that way means that if you ever want to update the operating system to Warp 4 you lose all your installed programs.

When I upgraded from OS/2 2.10 to Warp 3 in 1994 I kept the boot partition to 2 GB and made 2 other partitions on the hard disk (1 for utilities and the other for programs).  That setup has stayed through Warp 3 Connect, Warp 4 and now ArcaOS, although from Warp 4 the number of partitions grew to 10 spread over 3 hard disks.  I have programs from Warp 3 that still work and are used  when necessary.  I work on the principle of not putting all my eggs in one basket.
