Applications / Escriba 0.96d
« on: April 11, 2015, 01:13:05 am »
Having a very quiet time on the night shift I decided to give this program a try.

I am quite surprised that an OS/2 v2.x program works as well as this does on out WSeB boxes.

There are a couple of annoying aspects: it does not like my 28 inch (1920x1200) high resolution screen - there is a pronounced flickering which I assume is due to this being written for the standard monitors of the day. The second thing is in the font selection menu and the formatting menu - a half dozen fonts display at what appears to 48 point as do the font type (bold, underline, etc).  I don't know if this is an artefact of how it reacts to the large display or not but I will do more investigation as the night goes on.

Setup & Installation / Desktop restarting at midnight
« on: December 11, 2014, 05:33:54 pm »
I have a very strange problem.  One of our computers restarts the desktop at midnight.  I only noticed it because I have been on the night shift this week.

It is only this box - all the others stay stable with no hint of a restart at midnight, just as this box used to.  The only difference is that we had to replace the boot drive hard disk a couple of weeks ago and restore the image from backup.  Everything else on the machine works as it always did with all programs appearing where they were before the disk change.

We can live with it if we have to but I would be interested to know if anyone has seen this and if there is a way it can be fixed.

Internet / Firefox for eCS (OS/2) 24.8.1 Beta2 using very high CPU.
« on: September 27, 2014, 03:25:16 pm »
The latest firefox has the same problem as the previous version, namely very high CPU usage and plugin-container.exe tending to stay open even when firefox is closed.

It did this on my 4 core and 6 core processor machines as well as our dual 6 core processor test server, pushing CPU usage to well over 90% on all cores.

Note I said DID, it now behaves itself and is working as I expect it to for the last 7 hours.

To fix this problem you need to go to about:config and look for dom.ipc.plugins.enabled and toggle true to false - you can also toggle any other true statements in that dom.ipc group to false.

Since firefox 17 also uses plugin-container.exe this fix should work for those versions as well.

Setup & Installation / Adding fonts to be used by Ghostscript
« on: August 03, 2014, 07:41:51 pm »
I have a manual in PDF form that will not display the diagrams because they have a Japanese font as well as an English embedded in them.

Is it possible to add an available Japanese font (MsMincho.TTC) and map it to Shingo-medium?  Alternately, does anyone have Shingo-medium as a true type font and where did you get it?

Utilities / S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring
« on: May 30, 2014, 01:04:07 pm »
I know this is a strange request but does anyone know of a S.M.A.R.T. monitoring utility that runs on OS/2 and shows the S.M.A.R.T. data of SCSI disks and tapes.

SmartMon does on nearly all OSs but not OS/2.  SmartCtl appears to be for IDE/SATA drives only.  Those are the only two I know of for OS/2 but there might be others around from way back when SCSI disks and tape backup were the norm.

Internet / Strange problems with Firefox
« on: April 15, 2014, 09:13:57 pm »
I have a couple of strange problems with Firefox, both the 10.0.x branch as well as the 17.0.5 b2.

The first appears on all the computers here, single core or multi core.  It is shown in the attached picture.  All the machines are using Snap graphics and ATI video cards.

The second only appears on the multi core machines. When I want to copy a picture or diagram from a web page I normally click MB2 on the image and select 'Save image as...', this brings up the save as dialogue box and I can select where to save as well as the name - all is well at this point.  Now when I click on OK Firefox closes even though the image usually gets saved.  There is nothing logged that tells what is happening or why - very annoying.

The only difference between the setup of all the machines is that the multi core machines have the SMP files and os2apic.psd otherwise they are from the same WSeB disk image with adjustment for USB controllers and network names and the mozprofiles directory is copied from the one stored on the NAS - it made no difference starting with a blank profile.

Networking / SAMBA Printing
« on: October 14, 2013, 12:48:57 am »
Following on from Ben's saga with network drivers in which SAMBA was mentioned several times, I have a question.

Is it possible to use SAMBA as the transport mechanism to print from OS/2 to a printer on a password protected network print server?

I can do this from win XP running in a VM on OS/2 but not directly from OS/2 itself.  Maybe I'm not making the necessary sacrifices.

If it is possible, and someone is actually doing it, could you/they please let me in on the secret.

Networking / FTP
« on: August 01, 2013, 06:25:42 pm »
I have a need to move some rather large files between two networks, by large I mean greater than 12GB.

The easiest way to do this is via FTP.  The problem is that I have not been able to discover an OS/2 FTP client that can handle that size of file, most clag out at 2GB.

Is there such an OS/2 FTP client that will do the job or do I have to look at some sort of kludge to get the job done?

Applications / Firefox 10.0.12-ESR
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:42:09 pm »
Since there doesn't appear to be any way to directly contact Martin I will put this here.

Firefox10.0.12-ESR  ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/mozilla/firefox-10.0.11.en-US.os2.zip is available on the Netlabs site.  Just remember to add the  mzfntcfgft_runtime_20130104.zip, from hobbes, as per the contained readme.
