Title: OS2World Server Issues (2020-01-04)
Post by: Martin Iturbide on January 04, 2020, 08:37:23 pm
Hi

The OS2World server had been updated and some work is still required to update the Joomla script of the main site.
The Forum and Wiki seems to be working fine.

I hope to release a new main site in the upcomming weeks.

Let's hope I don't regret this update on the future  ;D

Hi Martin

Guess that explains the blank page when loading https://www.os2world.com

Good luck with the update(s) and hope to see the main page back up soon  :-)

Hi

Saturday and Sunday were bad days for the server.

Now I have Joomla 3 installed and working. It is not yet as I would like to, but it is usable now (articles can be read).
I will keep working on the site.

Agree, + not always easy to upgrade something but it's the best time of year to do so :)

Could do with a "new post" indicator for Latest Forum Posts but, apart from that, it is looking good and seems to be working well.

Thanks for your hard work Martin.

It works already like that. I see an orange '* NEW' bitmap in front of the titles on the os2world.com home page. But a problem is that I have to log in each time I start the browser, even when cookies are allowed.

I like the new design as well. Thanks Martin.

It was unexpected that my Stylish code for the old page continues to work. I like my own additions more then the original and will keep it activated. I've made the fonts larger and changed the main font color from dark gray to black. I find it much easier to read. Additionally, the font size correction for the messages still works. (Apparently people use non-standard sizes or colors for their posts. With the CSS filter, it becomes readable.)

Hi

It was good that I was finally forced to update to Joomla 3.9 when the server got the PHP library updated. It was also good for security reasons too.

But I still have some things to fix:
1) The articles images still looks weird. All look floating on the text, and even if I set them as "inline", center or left, it shows always floating.
It seems to be a problem with the visual template. I will have to keep looking how to fix that. (or maybe change the template)
2) I still have to set up some antispam and/or captcha for user registration. I had turned off for the moment.
3) I need to set the RSS feeds again.
4) I'm sure I'm going to find some more things missing.

Can you tell  me more about your "Stylish code for the old page"? whats that?, let me see some pictures, maybe it can be interesting to take some inspiration from that?

While on the subject, could you change this, https://www.os2world.com/forum/Themes/default/images/sort_down.gif (https://www.os2world.com/forum/Themes/default/images/sort_down.gif) to a png? It's probably a one frame animated gif and it makes the browser (SM 2.42.9) use CPU.
Thanks for your work and time.

Well, looks like it works for some but I am not seeing it here using Mozilla/5.0 (OS/2; Warp 4.5; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0 SeaMonkey/2.42.9esr

Hi Martin,

here's the CSS:
Code: [Select]
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain("www.os2world.com")
{

   *
   {
      font-size: 100% !important;
      font-family: DejaVu Sans;
      line-height: 1.4em !important;
   }

   p, li
   {
      font-size: 10pt !important;
      color: black !important;
   }

}

Here are the screenshots:

(I can't upload the 3rd and 4th screenshot, that shows a thread page with filtered size and colors. IIRC, that's why I've added the p, li part above. The 3rd has 56 KB and shows the original. Upload worked, but didn't make sense. The 4th has 60 KB and shows the modified page, but led to the error message:)

Thanks for your work and time.

I don't see that file as an animated gif. I don't want to change it to png because it could be a problem for the SMForum template, but I can try to save it with gimp as a GIF and upload it again to see if there is any change.  Or did your problem went away with a new SeaMonkey profile?

Hi Martin, if that is a responce to me: Pete's problem is that he doesn't see the 'NEW' icon, nothing more.

Additionally, login doesn't stick. I have to log in for every session again.

Hi Martin,
We had a similar problem on the Arca Noae Trac server, one image seemed to be an animated gif with one frame which caused all the Mozilla apps based on 45.9ESR to use CPU, a bug in the browser. In that case Lewis replaced the offending gif with a png.
This gif does the same here, if I go to "Recent Unread Topics" and there are any posts, CPU is busy, if no messages, one CPU has 1% usage. It seems to be the arrow. Rebuilding it as a regular gif should work, easy to test by loading it into a tab and looking at CPU usage.
The profile thing was for Pete where the new icon doesn't show.
Thanks

Hi Dave.

I confirm the issue of the https://www.os2world.com/forum/Themes/default/images/sort_down.gif  file with Firerfox 45.9.0.
It happens also to me.

I had tried to re-save that file with Gimp, but as a gif still cause trouble. For what I can see on gimp, it is not an animation, so I'm trying to find a way to remove the property that is making Firefox spike up. (Wait, it seems that I have a cache issue)  I just change it to PNG, but I'm not sure if the forums script will be smart to only display "sort_down." without depending if it is a gif or not.

Update: I just tried to save the gif files on PMView and it does not spike up on firefox. I will check more about this.

Dave, Can you please point to the "Recent Unread Topics" page where it shows?

Issues List

Just some update on the site.

- I think that now the "Remember Me" for logon is working on the main page. (It was some PHP setting)
- Also, I had re-enable the site registration with a recaptcha that woks only on Firefox 45.9
- I also organized the search results of the main site by date (newer first). I prefer it that way, but let me know if someone complains.

Main Site (Joomla) is not remembering logged users
On the page https://www.os2world.com/cms/ (https://www.os2world.com/cms/) I have to login every time I start a new browser session.

Cookies are allowed for os2world.com. I have multiple cookies stored under www.os2world.com, even some that look related. But I don't know which one is the correct one.

In contrast, the SMF pages store the login data even across browser restarts, as it was before the upgrades with the old main page.

Hi Andreas

I'm not experiencing your issue with ArcaOS andFirefox 45.9 anymore. Andreas, maybe you can try deleting the cookies or making a temporal profile for Firefox and see if something changes.

Can someone confirm if the "remember me" feature on the main page is working? It is working fine for me on Firefox 45.9 (also on 38.8), closing the navigator and reopening is saving my logon.

Interestingly I have not logged in on the main page but did not need to login to post this so login seems to persist for forums.

This evening, I will try what happens if I delete both joomla_remember_me_* cookies. That might be the correct ones. There are several others by os2world.com and www.os2world.com that I could try to delete after that.

It behaves the same on two different systems with two different Mozilla apps and versions, of that one is the recent Firefox for W$. Here I run SeaMonkey 2.35 (Firefox 38).
Title: Re: OS2World Server Issues (2020-01-04)

It doesn't work for me. Even after I've deleted all os2world cookies, the browser keeps me logged in on the main site https://www.os2world.com/cms/ (https://www.os2world.com/cms/) only until I close all browser windows.

On opening the main site, the first cookie in the screenshot is created. It's a session cookie, that's deleted after a browser session.

The second joomla_remember_me_* cookie is added after I log in. It expires after a month. I guess that's the one that doesn't do what it should.

The third and fourth cookies are created after I've opened this thread. These are SMF pages. The PHPSESSID cookie expires at the end of the session and the SMFCookie* is the one that successfully keeps me logged in on the SMF pages until 2026.

Hi

Today I tried Seamonkey (Build identifier: 20190601192153), fresh and recently installed. Logged in to the main site (os2world.com/cms) with "Remember me" selected. Closed Seamonkey, restarted it and I was logged. I also rebooted and tried it again and I was logged.

Since there are three reports against one (mine), I think that there most be something that recognizes me or my network to keep me logged.

joomla_remember_me should be the cookie that works. I also have the same ones that Andreas shows on his post's attachment.

Hi Martin

I deleted all os2world cookies, made sure Seamonkey 2.42.9 was set to "Allow Cookies from This Website" and closed Seamonkey followed by a reboot.

Having rebooted I started Seamonkey and logged in to .os2world. I had a read about the latest AOO release then left os2world for ebay - looking for a new cpu water cooling kit to replace my just died Antec kuhler 650. Decided to try the Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120 kit.

I then visited os2world again and had to login again - I had not even closed the browser.

The main page no longer notices that I have already read the Latest Forum Posts - in fact, I can read a post then refresh the main page and that post still shows as New.

Both the above seem to be the result of deleting cookies previously although I could be wrong. Prior to deleting cookies I was always logged in to the forums and the main page login worked until the browser was closed.

Later edit: Latest Forum Posts "New" indicator seems to be working now.
Regards

Pete

After some days, the logged-in status won't survive a site leave. Now I have the same experience as Pete that I have to log in again, even when I haven't restarted the browser. BTW: That was  also the case before I have deleted all os2world cookies.

How many os2world cookies should I have?

Interesting. Apparently you (and most likely Ian as well) are the only persons, for them cookies work. It might have to do with admin permissions.
